Belafonte Attacks Cain: 'A Bad Apple' 'So Denied Intelligence' 'I Don’t Think Prayers Were Created For Him'

In a "Joy Behar Show" segment scheduled to be aired on HLN Friday, singer Harry Belafonte attacked Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain in potentially the most disgraceful manner of any media member to date.

While his host and others on the set laughed, Belafonte called Cain "a bad apple" that was "so denied intelligence...I don’t think prayers were created for him" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JOY BEHAR, HOST: Now, let me interrupt you for a second, because now you have someone like Herman Cain.

HARRY BELAFONTE: Who?

BEHAR: Herman Cain?

BELAFONTE: Herman Cain?

BEHAR: You know who he is. [Laughs] And he doesn’t believe that racism holds anyone back in any way now. I mean, you know, what do you think about that statement?

BELAFONTE: Well, you know, it’s very hard to comment on somebody who is so denied intelligence…

[LAUGHTER FROM BEHAR AND OTHERS IN THE STUDIO]

BELAFONTE: … and certainly someone who is as denied a view of history such as he reveals. He knows very little. Because he happened to have had good fortune hit him, because he happened to have had a moment when he broke through, the moment someone blinked, does not make him the authority on the plight of people of color. […]

BELAFONTE: I just want to make this observation about Herman Cain. The Republican Party, the Tea Party, all those forces to the extreme right have consistently tried to come up with representation for what they call black, what they call the real negroes, and try to push these images as the kinds of voices that America should be living through. So we got Condoleezza Rice, we got Colin Powell. I know they’re heroes for some people, but for a lot of us they’re not.

And Herman Cain is just the latest incarnation of what is totally false to the needs of our community, and the needs of our nation. I think he’s a bad apple, and people should look at his whole card. He’s not what he says he is.

BEHAR: No. I don’t think he has a prayer anyway in the election actually.

BELAFONTE: I don’t think prayers were created for him.

[LAUGHTER FROM BEHAR AND OTHERS IN THE STUDIO]

What the heck is going on in this country when black conservatives are held in such contempt by the Left that musicians can go on a nationally televised program created by a so-called news network and speak so disgracefully about the object of their derision while the host and others in the studio laugh with approval?

I'm not sure what's worse - the invective spewed by this disgusting man or the fact that representatives of CNN reacted the way they did to his comments without any concern for how it might be received.

I sincerely hope the folks at CNN and Time Warner are proud of what they're going to air Friday night, and that they realize likely 50 percent of the nation will be shocked and appalled by it.

So apparently a "real negro" has to understand that high levels of prison incarceration and unemployment are because of racism...? The banana boat guy thinks that someone isn't really black unless he don't like whitey and Herman Cain is just doing what white people want ?
Wow.

As I posted on another thread - what the hell has 'Day-O' done in the past 50 or so years???? This guy seems to be doing allright in the country that he continually bad--mouths.......................and apparantly he is content to let his 'brothers' be held down and stereotyped and categorized as to the way they are.......and any 'black' person who DOESN'T fit that criterea is some kind of threat to Bele-phony's way of thinking.

And, by the way, Harry - that perennial fence-sitter Colin Powell is NOT a 'hero' to many of us, so don't be patting yourself on the back too much about that!!! Of course, you wouldn't have a CLUE as to why I said that, would you???

Any white person who lumps all black people together the way you do would be villified for racial stereotyping.

Oh, really, Harry?

Take a look at Cain's bio..his father worked three jobs ..he graduated from Purdue University (blink). Then success at Coca Cola (blink), VP at Pillsbury (blink) and CEO of Godfather's Pizza (blink).

You, on the other hand...what did you do?  Oh, yeah, you went to acting school and then became a singer.  So it's obvious that YOUR success, unlike Herman Cain's was the result of hard work, not a "blink."

What the H have YOU done that makes you an authority on the plight of peopl of color????

Submitted by Kenny Bunkport on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 12:06pm.

By all means, let's keep parading deranged has-beens like Belafonte on TV. Give him an open forum for an hour to rant himself into a frenzy. He'll do more damage to race hustlers like Sharpton and Jackson than a hundred Krauthammers.

I wager everyone watching (except for the 30% of the population permanently at the Kool-Aid stand) experiences the same sort of nervous embarassment as when your uncle starts cleaning his ears at the Thanksgiving dinner table.

The beauty of the Cain candidancy is that the ridiculous rules of racial political correctness are being brought to light. Inadvertently, the media is exposing the absurdness of modern liberal racial dogma, which they have been careful to present to the average viewer as "reasonable".

A bad apple.

Submitted by almostacowboy on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 12:53pm.

So, according to Mr. Belafonte, who ascribes to the addage "One bad apple spoils the barrel", Herman Cain's success is going to "spoil" the black community. How, Mr. Belafonte? Will we have an increase in black men being responsible for their children. Will blacks will shed the "victim mentality", get educations, strive for something higher than "the more kid's I have the bigger welfare check I get". Will they work harder, take an extra job, become financially independent and free themselves from the "if you better yourself and leave the ghetto, you ain't really black" mentality? No, we can't have "oreos" like Herman Cain or Bill Cosby spoiling the government dependent, why bother trying, the white devil is holding me back apple barrel, can we Mr. Belafonte.

There is a similar mentality that I have witnessed first-hand in my job in the deaf community. There is a group of deaf people adamantly opposed to cochlear implants used to restore hearing to the profoundly deaf. The main reason, among others, they are opposed to cochlear implants is that they are afraid they will be "left alone", isolated by their deafness in the world of the hearing. I believe there is a similar feeling among uneducated and/or unmotivated blacks. "If that black person does well it makes me look bad".

I could be wrong.

Ye Old Race Card, played again

Submitted by CobraMan on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 2:22pm.

Hay, Harry, if racism is so rampant, so pervasive, so detrimental to Blacks in America, then WHY are there so many successful black people in America? WHY is Obama the President? Why is Cain a forerunner in the GOP nomination campaign? WHY are YOU so well-known? Or Oprah, or Tiger Woods, or any other well-known and successful black person, for that matter?

Let's be honest, for just a minute, shall we? Racism does exist in America, and it's not limited to, shall we say, the lighter pigmented segment of the population, but it's not as prevalent as the race baiters love to claim, For if it were, there wouldn't be ANY successful black people anywhere in America. We wouldn't have black Generals, Judges, Lawyers, Politicians , Businessmen, Teachers, Professors, Entertainers, Professional Sportsmen, Priests, Pastors,Firemen, Policemen, Doctors, Nurses, ect., yet there they are, black men and women fully integrated into every aspect of American society without exception. So, please, tell me again how racism is so detrimental to blacks in America? The evidence doesn't support that claim at all.

Cain is right, racism in America isn't as detrimental to achieving success as we've been led to believe. The only thing keeping black people, or people of any color, for that matter, from becoming successful in America are their own personal limitations, which is something they, themselves, can overcome, but only if they apply themselves.

Submitted by Surly_Curmudgen on Tue, 10/11/2011 - 5:06pm.

Belafonte is a red diaper baby, a red to the core, card carrying member of the Communist party USA (CPUSA). He hates the US with a very deep passion and never has anything good to say about the US.

What is truly ironic is that the bigotry displayed towards blacks under communism made the same bigotry of the political left in the US appear benign.

Back in the day when the phrase "African-American" first reared its head (courtesy of Jesse Jackson, I believe), I worked with some "people of color". One morning I inquired as to their feelings on this new form of ethnic identification. One of the ladies, referring to Jackson, mightily rolled her eyes and snapped, "I wish that man would quit presuming to speak for me!"

And I've never heard anyone except those on the Left use the term "real Negro", whatever that even means,
