Christine O'Donnell Walks Off CNN's 'Piers Morgan Tonight'

Former Delaware senatorial candidate Christine O'Donnell abruptly walked off the set of CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" Wednesday.

O'Donnell wanted to discuss more meaty issues in her new book, such as her criticisms of President Obama, while her host focused on masturbation and same-sex marriage (video follows with transcript and commentary):

PIERS MORGAN, HOST: Can I ask you, have you -- have you committed lust in your heart and therefore adultery?

CHRISTINE O'DONNELL: Let's not even go there. Let's get the conversation back to the book. That's why I'm here.

MORGAN: Yes. But this is -- to me, it's a natural extension to ask you, for example, a very relevant question of any politician. For example --

O'DONNELL: I address it all in the book.

MORGAN: -- what is your view of gay marriage, for example?

O'DONNELL: I address that stuff in the book.

MORGAN: You can't -- you're on here to promote the damn book. So, you can't keep saying it's all in the book. You got to repeat some of it.

O'DONNELL: I'm here to talk about the book.

MORGAN: Yes. I'm talking about the book. You keep saying it's all in the book. So, tell me what's in the book.

O'DONNELL: Well, why don't you ask me questions about what I say in the chapter called "Our Follower in Chief" where I criticize Barack Obama? You know, why don't we talk about --

MORGAN: Because right now, I'm curious -- right now, I'm curious about whether you support gay marriage.

O'DONNELL: You're borderline being a little bit rude. You know, I obviously --

MORGAN: Really?

O'DONNELL: -- I obviously want to talk about the issues that I choose to talk about in the book.

MORGAN: Do you answer that question in the book?

O'DONNELL: I talk about my religious beliefs, yes. I absolutely do.

MORGAN: I mean, do you talk -- do you talk about gay marriage in the book? O'DONNELL: What relevance is that right now? Is there a piece of legislation? I mean, I shouldn't be voting on anything.

MORGAN: It's obviously one of the most -- it's obviously, as you know, because Michele Bachmann's views and others, it's obviously a highly contentious political issue. I'm just curious what your view is.

You keep saying it's in a book. So, I'm bemused as to why you wouldn't just say it in an interview if it's in the book?

O'DONNELL: Because I don't think it's relevant. It's not a topic that I choose to embrace. I'm not championing it right now. I've been there, done that, gone down that road.

Right now, what I'm trying to do is to promote a book that I hope to be a very inspirational story to people who are part of the Tea Party movement so that they can continue, you know, in this movement to bring America back to the second American Revolution. That's my goal. That's my focus right now.

MORGAN: So, would you agree with Michele Bachmann that we should maybe repeal "don't ask, don't tell"? You should restore that?

O'DONNELL: I'm not talking policies. I'm not running for office. Ask Michele Bachmann what she thinks. Ask the candidates who are running for office what they think.

MORGAN: Why are you being so weird about this?

O'DONNELL: I'm not being weird about this, Piers. I'm not running for office. I'm not promoting a legislative agenda. I'm promoting the policies that I lay out in the book that are mostly fiscal, that are mostly constitutional.

That's why I agreed to come on your show. That's what I want to talk about.

I'm not being weird. You're being a little rude.

MORGAN: I'm baffled as to why you think I'm being rude. I think I'm being rather charming and respectful. I'm just asking questions based on your own public statements and now what you've written in your own book. It's hardly rude to ask you that surely.

O'DONNELL: Well, don't you think as a host, if I say this is what I want to talk about, that's what we should address?

MORGAN: Not really, no. You're a politician.

O'DONNELL: Yes. OK. I'm being pulled away. You know, we turned down another interview for this.

MORGAN: Where are you going? You're leaving?

O'DONNELL: Well, I was supposed to be speaking at the Republican women's club at 6:00, and I chose to be a little late for that not to be -- you know, yes, not to endure rude talk show hosts, but to talk to you about my book and to talk about the issues that I address in my book. Have you read the book?

MORGAN: Yes, but these issues are in your book. That's my point. You do talk about them.

O'DONNELL: OK. All right. Are we off? Are we done?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He's still there.

MORGAN: I'm not. I'm still here.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He says he still wants to talk to you.

MORGAN: It would appear that the interview has just been ended.

For the record, Morgan began this interview by saying:

MORGAN: I can't help but notice you did the sign of the cross as you sat down there. Was it -- is it because you're nervous about the interview? Or --

O'DONNELL: No, I did it off camera. I didn't realize you were watching. I do that just because ever since my very first TV interview, I just pray. You know, and ask for God's blessing on what I'm about to say.

MORGAN: Well, I got relieved. I was expecting some kind of devil worshipping sign.

Nice bedside manner, huh? A bit later, he predictably questioned O'Donnell about dabbling in witchcraft.

After some discussion about something that was clearly old news by now, O'Donnell smartly asked, "Did Bill Maher pay you to rerun his show?"

Clearly not getting the point that his guest wanted to discuss some things that weren't covered in great detail during last year's campaign, Morgan played O'Donnell's ad wherein she said, "I'm not a witch."

After a commercial break, Morgan played a clip of O'Donnell discussing masturbation on MTV many years ago :

MORGAN: That was from the MTV special "Sex in the '90s." I'm about to ask you a question I don't ask most of my guests, I have to be honest with you. Do you still think masturbation is wrong?

O'DONNELL: Let's not even go there.

Sadly, Morgan did go there, and then eventually moved right into same-sex marriage.

As such, the bulk of his 24-minute (including commercials) interview with O'Donnell was spent on her dabbling in witchcraft when she was a kid, masturbation, and same-sex marriage.

To be sure, O'Donnell should have expected this from Morgan who lives for the salacious, and shouldn't have been surprised by any of his questions let alone walked off the set.

On the other hand, America currently has 9.1 percent unemployment, plummeting home and stock prices, a debt explosion, a credit rating problem, and Medicare going bankrupt in twelve years.

A recent CNN poll found that only one percent of respondents felt policies towards gays and lesbians were the number one priority facing the nation. By contrast, 60 percent said the economy while another 16 percent said the budget deficit.

Yet commentators whenever they're interviewing conservatives feel the need to focus a great deal of time on social issues such as same-sex marriage.

David Gregory did the same thing with Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) on Sunday's "Meet the Press."

This is certainly not to imply that such issues aren't important, but it does seem America's media focus so much attention on these matters with conservative guests in order to belittle their religious beliefs.

With all the problems we're currently facing, wouldn't it be better to focus on what is really concerning the public?

Or is that not good for ratings?

One fundamental problem...

Submitted by AgentAmerican on Thu, 08/18/2011 - 12:05pm.

Since this was CNN, not very many people watched it. I found out about this on Yahoo! first as they trumpeted and gloated about it.

Piers should consider going back to America's Got Talent with Sharon and Howie. If CNN wants a ratings boost, hire Michael Savage...of course Wolfy would get hot under his (dog) collar if that happened.

Somebody needs to stand up for Christine and confront this hack defending her honor. Where are the gentlemen? A duel would have resulted in olden days.

I'm sorry, I think Ms. O'Donnell handled this really poorly , even though obviously Piers Morgan was obsessed. This is what you get if you try to ignore social issues and say "that's not an issue right now" instead of trying to own the discussion on it. People still have different views, and they're not going to forget.

So how do you think moderates

Submitted by redfish on Thu, 08/18/2011 - 12:59pm.

So how do you think moderates and independents will see the interview? I think O'Donnell came off looking bad, not Piers Morgan. So, even if you agree that Piers Morgan was an ass in this, it wasn't necessarily the right way to handle the interview.

I think these questions could have been dealt with in one or two answers, if she answered them the right way, and made Piers Morgan look like a fool for being concerned about it. "Do you think its radical to say that if someone spends 5 hours a day looking at porn and masturbating, that its a bad thing? You're trying to make me look extreme on social issues when I'm not, just to distract from fiscal issues." She just took up more of her interview time by deflecting.

It began much earlier than where the NB video picks up and Piers was asking her over and over again about masturbation. She explained that that quote came from the 90's when she was on an MTV show -and CNN was showing clips of her on the show from that period- yet he kept hounding her on that subject. It was after several minutes of this that the transcript begins. Basically, this was all about some things she said about two decades ago.

Point being, if you didn't see (or read) the entire interview, your missing out on just how ludicrous this CNN host was to her.

So not only are you cowardly, you're ignorant as to how the industry runs. Then, you follow it up by a "I would have..." Listen. The most pressing issue in this country today is the damned depression Obama and the Left are causing with their ideological policies. Nobody really cares about who is sleeping with who.

Don't you think Piers Morgan was trying to manipulate the interview to focus on a distraction and away from the economic catastrophe that is in progress? The most valuable use of that precious interview time was to attempt to embarrass O'Donnell on a fringe social issue while the economy burns to the ground? Right?

This is exactly how

Submitted by aquinasthegoat on Thu, 08/18/2011 - 2:26pm.

This is exactly how conservatives need to handle these reporters. Be frank and honest and don't allow them to keep you on the hot seat while they continue to twist your own words and actions to fit their preconceived notions of what a conservative is. Palin showed how well this strategy can work on her bus tour when she had the liberal media looking like stumbling and bumbling fools trying to keep up with her. Stop being afraid of these court jesters in reporters clothing. Also, stop being afraid of what non committal wishy washy moderates and independents think. Many of them will almost always side with the underdog or the party out of power. Those people are no more complicated than that and as such there's no need to waste time and money trying to court their vote.

Seriously, just how much ill-treatment do you think someone should put up with? And it seems to be the case that Piers promised one thing and delivered something else. But what do you do? You fall back on saying "you don't know". Well, here's a clue for you -- none of us know if Piers did or didn't. What we all have is the video and the transcript. However, what I'm saying is a reasonable deduction based on the way things went. And for you to deny that makes me wonder if you have a problem understanding what stop lights mean, too.

This is more of what we need from even the elected officials that are Republicans that get blind-sided like Christine O'Donnell did, just call them on it and just walk away. She did it in a classy way at least, but I wouldn't have blamed her if she had gone on a tear into Morgan.

Kinda like how Ted Nugent told him to kiss his ass, the Republican Congressmen(and women) should get in their faces.  After all, it's what their Dear Leader promoted, right?

I don't know what to make of this.

Submitted by DumbCanuck on Thu, 08/18/2011 - 12:22pm.

I do respect Ms. O'Donnell, but walking off an interview because pierce was haranging over SSM is a little extreme. She's there to promote her book. If these issues were covered in the book, then she should have been prepared to discuss them. I was also a taken for a loop when she said that the interview should only cover topics she wanted to discuss.

She might have been better off by saying something like, "Pierce, these topics are covered in the book. I'm not prepared to debate this issue here tonight other than to say that I still believe SSM is wrong. The public is free to evaluate my opinions on SSM, which is a matter of public record, and has been discussed in the book. Can we please agree to disagree, and move on to another topic now?"

I think it would have ended then and there. Instead, she tries to dodge and weave, and you know a liberal like Pierce won't let go of the line once he's got something hooked. Which raises the question: Why was she so afraid to reiterate her views on SSM? What has she got to be ashamed of? Being portrayed as extreme? Half the country (if not more) still agrees with her on this. How is that extreme? Courage, girl.

So instead of making Pierce look like another liberal bully interviewer, Ms. O'Donnell comes off looking somewhat unstable, which is exactly what CNN wanted to do all along. In all fairness to Ms. O'Donnell, though, Pierce should have chosen to cover more relevant topics of interest instead of going after the sensational. I'm sure he would have conducted the interview far more gratiously if there was a liberal sitting in that hot seat.

Not exactly a steller moment for either individual.

Exactly , this way of approaching the interview didn't help her give her message at all. But I think even trying to deflect the questions the way you suggest wouldn't have worked either, Piers Morgan would have still continued to ask the question. Conservatives need to come up with a way to answer questions on social issues that puts suggestions of extremism to bed (so you can then move on to the next issue), rather than to constantly be afraid of talking about them.

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 08/18/2011 - 1:20pm.

O'Donnell and her handlers are pretty naive if they think that Morgan was actually going to help her promote her book as he would a Democrat or rehab'ed former Hollywood star. Other folks have the agility to turn that line of questioning back on the interviewer, but O'Donnell sort of turtled up and looked bad. I don't blame her for walking off, but she should have expected to get grilled, and if she didn't want to do battle in the sewer, she should've turned it down.

Morgan was his typical provocative self. His audience is more interested in discussions about witchcraft, same-sex marriage, and masturbation, but not for any meaningful purpose -- merely to titilate. I think Morgan's line of questioning would have continued along the same lines and never get to the book itself.

Of course, it's his show, and he can run it the way he wants. But I'd no sooner appear on his program than I would on the Jerry Springer Show, and for roughly similar reasons.

Yeah, sure. Every interviewer, talk show personality, etc. is going to allow 20 minutes of what an author wants to push while just sitting back yawning. Not going to happen. There are things called ratings. Piers will go after from one angle, Hannity could support her from another angle. She could have done a lot of things to Piers if she were a little bit more on the ball like Ann Coulter against Piers. She didn't sell more books from that interview.

Advancing The Narrative™

Submitted by Phryj1 on Thu, 08/18/2011 - 4:51pm.

Christine clearly said her book was about fiscal and Constitutional issues, which Obama is weak on, so, NATURALLY, Piers, being the good little leftool Obamapologist he is, pushes a social issues angle to try to paint Christine, and by extension the Tea Party, as extremist.

You know full well if a left-winger were on there promoting a book, the interview would've been a softball filled puff piece, essentially just an ad for the book.

All part of The Narrative™. Fortunately, she caught on quickly and walked. This is what conservatives need to do, refuse to play ball with these left-wing hacks posing as journalists and expose their Narrative™ for what it really is.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

So I've been told that gay marriage/homosexuality issues are discussed in the book. So is it true or not? I'm not gonna waste time or money on the damn thing, but I think it should be known if its really in there. If it is then she looks like a fool for walking, but if its not then she had a point. He should've just moved on to another subject from her book. I'm sure it would not take long finding something to ask about. For the future though if she's not prepared to defend her views she should just take a page out of Palins (and most republicans) book and only do interviews where the host is sympathetic to their views.

BTW I just read that she cut another interview short after this one.

Politics does indeed cause people to emote, speak, and act, strangely.

Like voting for, supporting, and either acting against or ignoring all evidence that Obama is neither super intelligent, good-looking, experienced, capable, industrious, and above all - proclaiming him a great orator when it is painfully clear that he is not..

However, as an incompetent, lying fool, he is mos def at the head of the ranks of a lot politicians; most of them liberal Democrats.

Apparently, though, even though purple was a color reserved for royalty way back when, more and more  liberals are realizing that having purple lips does not guarantee that possessing those magenta lips ensures either god-like status, ability, or royalty.

I don't blame O'Donnell for scooting out of that interview, particularly if she had another engagement that it had encroached on. However she could have had more fun with it, if it had been on a bigger venue with more listeners to make it worthwhile.
She could have put on her best 1-900 voice and said 'Piers, maybe some other night I'll talk about that with you, but tonight I have a headache'.
Or maybe: "Piers, I don't feel comfortable at all talking about financial matters and sex in the same conversation. That's not something to which you are accustomed, is it?"
