Mark Halperin Declares Romney Winner of GOP's Iowa Debate, Gives Gingrich C+
You really have to wonder what debate Mark Halperin was watching Thursday evening.
Appearing on Friday's "Morning Joe," the Time magazine and MSNBC political analyst declared former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney the winner of the Republican presidential debate in Iowa, and actually gave former House Speaker Newt Gingrich - who many thought stole the show - only a C+ (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):
MARK HALPERIN, POLITICAL ANALYST FOR TIME MAGAZINE AND MSNBC: There were two candidates I think head and shoulders above everybody else: Mitt Romney and Michele Bachmann. And the overall performance of the others in a pretty ragged two hours I don’t think changed very much.
But Mitt Romney did a great job, and got pretty lucky. You’d think a guy who’s that big of a frontrunner would have been the main target, but as you saw in the opening clips, it really was Michele Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty going back and forth.

Halperin's point about nobody laying a glove on Romney is a valid one, and if this continues, the former Massachusetts governor will certainly benefit.
However, giving Gingrich a C+ was absurd and in my view is indicative of how media members possibly fear the former Speaker more than anyone else on that stage Thursday evening. They know Gingrich would tear President Obama apart in a one-on-one debate, and that's their worst nightmare.
That said, when former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele got his chance to respond, he also took exception to Halperin's assessment:
MICHAEL STEELE: I think there’s a difference between what you, what you hear from the professional political class and the people out there last night on Twitter and so forth who thought Newt Gingrich did phenomenally well. I thought Newt Gingrich planted a flag last night. I think he acquitted himself well in many respects, substantively as well as pushing back on, you know, the whole idea that we’re going to come together and not do talking points and the first line of questions is right out of the talking point box.
Indeed. For those that missed it, here was Gingrich's marvelous exchange with Fox News's Chris Wallace:
Delicious.
Getting back to Steele's assessment:
STEELE: I was just looking at the grading there in terms of how people lined up. I thought that Newt did a solid B performance last night. In fact, if I had to pick a winner, I would give him that because the expectation was so low in that regard.
Quite so. In fact, NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell tweeted the following halfway through the debate:

At the debate's conclusion, Bozell gave his Twitter followers his scorecard:

When informed of Halperin's assessment of Gingrich's performance, Bozell responded, “C+?? That’s ridiculous. He stole the show.”
I couldn't agree more.
*****Update: Read Bozell's scorecard.

Of course Halperin is going to push the biggest RINO

They want a repeat of what happened in '08. Sorry, but no one who allowd a government takeover of a state's health care system has any business in the Oval Office.
As for Newt, I don't care how well he performs in a debate, he will never be able to erase his RINO past, nor will he be able to rid himself of that train-load of baggage he is dragging around behind him.

You know, I watched Reid and Angle debate, and she totally destroyed him. The msm {even the LVRJ which is pretty conservative} gave her the edge, but didn't convey the whole truth - that she did indeed crush him!
Same with Palin and Biden - she had me mesmerized, and Biden was a novice in comparison, yet the consensus didn't line up.
I want to say just let them delude themselves, but they sway too many "surface voters" IMO we'd have Sen. Angle right now if they {msm} were honest, and people paid attention to first hand instead of what the elites told them to think!!!
Too much info paralyzes, so people only need to know which path they want -
big gov't: more of the same/prolonged recession or depression,
or small gov't: a return to reality, no, your house was NEVER worth that much so quit thinking a paper loss is real please, let's be responsible for ourselves.

I guess he doesn't realize the debate was in Iowa just 2 days before Ames Straw Poll. Romney is not a leading candidate among Iowa voters presently. Thus, why waste time on Mitt when the real players for votes in Iowa are Bachmann, Pawlenty, Cain and Paul in the upcoming Straw Poll? BTW I agree with Brent, Newt won the debate by exposing Wallace's Democratic bias - for those who don't know, he has been a registered Democrat for over 2 decades. Taking on the press is always the best hand to play in presidential politics.
Sorry, Newsbusters. I love

Sorry, Newsbusters. I love you guys, but you're dead wrong on this one. Mitt Romney WON the debate. Gingrich was one of the LOSERS along with Pawlenty, Paul, and Huntsmen.
Newt and Cain Won

The only reason the left is pushing for Romney is that many conservatives and TEA party folks will not vote for the progressive, leftist rino. I would much rather see Newt or Michele Bachmann win the nomination. That will never happen. The repugnut establishment, old boys club, will never let it happen.
Perry is entering the fray on Saturday and he has lots of political baggage to explain - The NAFTA highway through Texas and his "real" stand on the illegal alien issue.
Poor Markie

Here's the problem Markie. You see as you're a lib, how could you put yourself in the context of a conservative looking for their candidate? Can you get that one Markie? Need a diagram? What stones you must have to think you can see what a conservative eye would be looking for. Get over yourself. You're really not that smart Markie.
Huntsman got a C+? For What????

Standing around with this look on his face all night like: "I just made a horrible Fart. Will someone in this debate smell it and call me out on it?"
