Charles Krauthammer Smacks Down Margaret Carlson's Call for More Stimulus Spending: 'It Worked in ’09 and in ’10'
For the second week in a row, Bloomberg's Margaret Carlson got a much-needed education from Charles Krauthammer on PBS's "Inside Washington."
After Carlson gave the typical Keynesian response to Friday's unemployment report - "We’re cutting spending at a time when we should be adding spending to stimulate the economy and jobs" - Krauthammer without skipping a beat quipped, "The way it worked in ’09 and in ’10" (video follows with transcript and commentary):
GORDON PETERSON, HOST: The unemployment rate dipped slightly to 9.1 percent, and the private sector added 154,000 jobs, what is a net gain of 117 because there were 37,000 government jobs including 23,000 because of the Minnesota state shutdown. 117,000 in a, in a nation of 330 million people – that’s not very good news.
MARGARET CARLSON, BLOOMBERG NEWS: No, we need 300,000 to even, you know, show, show any growth. And there no signs of any growth, and we’re cutting spending at a time when we should be adding spending to stimulate the economy and jobs.
EVAN THOMAS, NEWSWEEK: But there is a larger…
CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: The way it, the way it worked in ’09 and in ’10.
Isn't it amazing how virtually every member of the media still believes in Keynesian economics despite its obvious failure in the past four and a half years?
As NewsBusters reported Friday:
Since the Democrats took over Congress in 2007, the deficit has grown tenfold from $160 billion to $1.6 trillion. Spending has increased $1.1 trillion or 41 percent as the debt exploded $5.9 trillion or 68 percent. Meanwhile, unemployment has gone from 4.4 percent to 9.1 percent.
How could anyone need any more proof that governments can't spend their way out of recessions?

It's not spending that is the utmost important thing but GDI. They should focus on increasing GDI by setting conditions for a business friendly environment. Lower taxes and getting rid of idiotic regulations and mandates is a good start.

I don't think Carlson would understand it even if you made a bar graph to illustrate it. She's a Lefty version of the old Chatty Cathy doll -- pull her string, and she utters some nonsense.

The canary in the coal mine, of course, is the always-haughty, tweed-jacketed, faculty-lounge elite by the name of Paul Krugman. Who famously was an Enron adviser and who also famously never seems to say anything new in his thrice-weekly diatribes. We saw the $1T in 2009 go right into the pockets of union hacks...not to schools, not to their beloved 'infrastructure.' Last I heard, that Liberal wet-dream---high-speed rail--also hasn't moved anywhere. Recall that the $1T 'stimulus' included enough funds to build the Pelosi-Reid high-speed rail between Nevada and California. But it's gone NOWHERE and hasn't even started.
Let's do some porkulus math.
Submitted by big.league.slider on Fri, 08/05/2011 - 8:53pm.
Let's do some cost/job estimates based on the "success" rate of previous porkulus expenditures: To get the unemployment rate back down to 6% (or so) would require putting about 5 million people back to work. The cost-per-job of the previous porkulus spending was about $278,000 per job. So to just get the unemployment rate back down to where it was during the Bush Administration, Obama would need to spend $1.39 trillion per year ($278,000 times 5,000,000).
I love this guy!

I think Dr. Krauthammer is too dignified to appear in the circus with Tingles the Clown. He could make all his excellent arguments but still wind up getting squirted with water from Tingles' daisy - er - mouth. As for Schultzy, I think the good doctor's reasoning would fly right over his head - or through it - seeing how there's nothing inside to stop it - except maybe fat cells.

You want to spot the liberal among a crowd of highly educated, and articulate people, then just allow them to speak and the crap suddenly materializes in front of them. Liberals do not gestate the same like a normal human beings, at the most critical time in their mother's womb the whole placenta drifts unexpectedly to the rectal cavity, then they slide out easily with high dosages of Ducolax. It's a sad thing being a liberal, you're doomed from birth to believe that horse manure tastes like chocolate, and spend the rest of eternity not knowing the difference between the truth, and a lie.

Ironic, don't you think? That a supposed media watchdog site posts articles that are clearly propaganda, the only purpose of which is to discredit democrats and are, in terms of the point being made, wrong.
The real deficit from that year is almost 3 times larger bc the Bush admin used accounting smoke and mirrors to come up with that number. They left off war expenditures. They added in trust fund surplus and they delayed outlays till the next fiscal year.
As to spending, the difference between the last bush budget and the 1st Obama budget was in the neighborhood of 200 billion. the last bush deficit and the first Obama one were over a trillion bc of a huge revenue decline. All of Bush''s deficits were larger than officially stated and started with the tax cuts. I.E. a revenue decline. The sum total of the Bush deficits added more than 5 trillion to the debt. the Obama deficits have added 4 trillion. the only way to begin to repair this gap is with a combination of tax hikes and spending control. to cut spending drastically now is to bring on a depression.
The stimulus worked well in reversing the economy but it wasn't enough. this is the conclusion from CBO, OMB, economists and investment banks. Where you come up with this crap about it not working is beyond me.

It does not matter who pays the 300,000 people they will be employed. If that is a direct handout from the government to the people and then they can claim they are employed to sit at home that will be good for the books. Which is all that they want. Who cares if the government pays 50 people and only gives them one shovel it is shovel ready work and 50 people are now employed. They don't care if it is sustainable as is always is to the left as government never runs out of money. When the money runs out it is a cut. When it should run out when the job is done, but no government paid job is ever done.

Submitted by Smartypants on Sat, 08/06/2011 - 10:39am.
Liberals are largely emotional thinkers, which means they do not deal in reality (not if they don't like what it shows them anyway). This is why, despite decades of known failure of their own principles, they still hold steadfast to their debunked notions. Many of these clowns believe GW Bush really did "steal" the 2000 election somehow, or that the Supreme Court handed him the victory. If they can't get past that nonsense, do not expect them to believe that government spending does not stimulate economic growth. Kennedy, Reagan and GW Bush all cut taxes, which resulted in economic growth and increased revenue to the Treasury each time. Despite this, liberals still cling to the canard that Bush's tax cuts cost the government money and created deficits. They never address spending, because it does not fit their reality. Only tax cuts cause deficits; spending is "essential".

Keynesian economics became accepted doctrine only because it justified unlimited spending by the government. And while it doesn't work, it doesn't matter to politicians who exist to spend other peoples money.

" If we decided to build a couple of new carriers, thousands of workers would be hired for the shipyards. Thousands of employees would be hired for the steel mills that would provide the steel for the hull and various sub contractors would hire thousands. Do you know what that means?
It means they would receive paychecks and go out and spend that money. That would help a recovery. That is a shovel ready project!
Increasing spending for the military does a couple of things. It not only not only stimulates the economy, it protects our nation. That is a better investment than say spending money on teaching Chinese prostitutes how to drink responsibly."
Sounds like he is advocating more stimulus to me.
