Michael Steele Laughs At Joan Walsh For Calling Obama 'The Reagan Figure'

By Noel Sheppard | July 20, 2011 | 19:21

As NewsBusters previously reported, Chris Matthews on Wednesday lied about Ronald Reagan's position on taxes in a "Hardball" segment insinuating the late President would oppose the current Republican stance on the debt ceiling.

When Salon editor Joan Walsh said Obama "is actually the Reagan figure here," former RNC chairman Michael Steele bust out laughing (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JOAN WALSH, SALON: Well, right. Well, Reagan was very much a conservative, and I didn't agree with him on much, but he was a pragmatist and a compromiser. And the fact of the matter is, Chris, I heard my friend Michael talk about the Constitution and the Tea Party likes to talk about the Constitution and the Founders, but the fact is the Founders didn't agree on very much at all.

MICHAEL STEELE: Right.

WALSH: The Founders argued about a lot of things, and they created a system in which we had to talk to one another and had to compromise. This President, President Obama, who I don't always agree with either, is actually the Reagan figure here.

STEELE: [Laughs]

WALSH: He is the person saying…

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Why are you laughing?

WALSH: …you know what, I'm going to disappoint some folks.

STEELE: Okay. [Continues laughing]

WALSH: Please don't laugh at me, Michael. I didn't laugh at you.

MATTHEWS: Why are you laughing, Michael?

STEELE: When you say something funny, I’m going to laugh.

MATTHEWS: Why’s it funny?

WALSH: Why’s it funny?

STEELE: Because he should have listened to that Reagan speech in, when he was a U.S. Senator, and voted against raising the debt limit. I mean…

WALSH: Yeah.

STEELE: …this is the fact here. The fact of the matter is, you know, it’s great for the DNC and the Democrats on the Hill to run around and quote Reagan and all of a sudden to find their Reagan mojo. The reality of it is it’s not believable because they’re not consistent in applying those very principles that Reagan talked about in, in particularly economically in how we deal with this problem. So, don’t, you know, cry me a river about, about Reagan. The reality of it is the President of the United States currently, Obama, did not listen to those very words when he had an opportunity as a U.S. Senator to vote...

WALSH: You know what? Now look…

STEELE: …to increase that debt.

When you think about it, it really is hysterical watching all of these Reagan-hating media members constantly comparing their beloved Obama to a president they had nothing but scorn for when he was in office.

It just goes to show how far such folks are willing to stoop to get the current White House resident reelected.

They'll even compare him to someone they personally loathed hoping that some Americans who loved our 40th president will like the 44th version more.

Most disturbing is we've still got almost sixteen months left of this chicanery.

Makes you shudder at the journalistic dishonesty awaiting us.

Walsh should go down to the docks and latch onto the first 2 merchant seamen that have been at sea for 6 months. No doubt that it would rid her of all her frustrations and allow her to relax.

...as to who is more intellectually challenged...Contessa Brewer or Joan Walsh. Putting a medical spin on it, I would have to say Contessa's stupidity is more acute. Joan's stupidity is more chronic because of her age. Add in Chrissy Tingles and you have the collective IQ of a doorknob.

Submitted by NotFondOfLibs on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 7:37pm.

Joan Walsh is such a pathetic clown, it is hard to keep from laughing hysterically at anything she says. When she compares Obama to Ronald Reagan, then it is doubly comical. She could get a job at any circus with the things she says.

EPIC FAIL! Hilarious and hysterical.

Submitted by motherbelt on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 7:39pm.

This is slightly off-topic, but since we are talking about women's scatterbrained defense of Obama, this bit by Contessa Brewer is even funnier!

Hilarious!

Brewer: “You’re simplifying the issues that were on the plate of the nation at that point. I mean we were looking at going — averting a Depression at that point, everyone the Fed chairman. . .

[Congressman] Brooks: “Well I disagree that we were going into a Depression, but go ahead.”

Brewer: “Do you have a degree in economics?”

Brooks: “Yes Ma’am I do, highest honors.”

Watch as Contessa tries to recover, and panics, hysterically asserting  that  but....but ....but.....if something isn't done, millions of Americans  won't even be able to EAT!!!

Yes, msnbc is batting 1000 now aren't they?

It's doubtful that Brewer has a degree in economics, so if this guy didn't have a degree, he could have asked, "Do you?" This of course, was much, much, better.

IMHO, communication should be an arts degree, not a sciences degree.

Also, interesting how she brings up his re-election in the interview. Hey Brewer, you have it backwards, his job is not to get re-elected, it's to enact laws that benefit the country as a whole. If he does well at that re-election will occur. At least it should work that way.

He'll never be back on with her. They're trying to find GOPers that don't have a clue.

always turn to Ronald Reagan's presidency and also say "What would Jesus do?" It is because they are losing the debate. The people in this country love Jesus, and they still love Ronald Reagan. You never hear those idiots in the media say that Obama is Jimmy Carter, Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, and George McGovern all rolled into one. They should start saying Obama is the most "LBJ-like" president, which THE MEDIA KNOWS is the truth.

BRAVO, Michael Steele!

Submitted by TexasMom0517 on Thu, 07/21/2011 - 9:46am.

Michael Steele is doing a much better job of articulating conservative values since he left the RNC. I liked him before he was head of the RNC, didn't think he did a great job there, but love him again now. I think he's just a lot more comfortable talking his principles and not having to speak for the party at large.

GO, Michael! This was great.

Submitted by Snappy on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 9:24pm.

Its fairly obvious the new meme is "Reagan" comparisons, They have been quoting him out of context, using him as a great compromiser, Obama stating "Reagan wouldnt sit here for this..." Last year Obama was the embodiment of Lincoln... this years flavor is Reagan.
I tell you, this President must just be the greatest this country has ever had. He has been able to consistently channel the best and the brightest of our past Presidents (dare I say world leaders past and future as well) heck, he has even been on the cover of magazines with halo's, walking on water and been compared to Christ himself. We uneducated morons who are not able to truly grasp the whole debt ceiling crises, as our "Professional Politician" betters can should just be thankful we have such a chameleon in the White House looking out for us........

....Reagan indeed...........

And even Al Dull-ton, the consumate race-baiter , was trying to sell some kind of Reagan/ Boy Blah-Blah comparison the other night!!!

I've said this many times -and if it's a 'racist' statement, then GOOD!!! - Barry Soetoro Barack Hussein Obama couldn't even qualify to shine Reagan's shoes!!!!
