Matthews Asks GOP Congressman 'Will You Resign' If Not Raising Debt Ceiling Causes Crisis?

By Noel Sheppard | July 19, 2011 | 21:13

Noel Sheppard's picture

As NewsBusters previously reported, Chris Matthews had quite a heated debate with Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) on Tuesday's "Hardball."

Amidst a series of ridiculous questions asked of the Congressman, possibly the most absurd was, "If we have a crisis in August [as a result of not raising the debt ceiling], will you resign?" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: August 2nd. Let me ask you this: if we do have spiking interest rates, if we do have a drop, downgrade of our bond rating in this country, and we do have a financial crisis because we haven't done this on time, which you say is not that important, will you resign?

CONGRESSMAN JOE WALSH (R-ILLINOIS): August 2nd’s not important, Chris. Solving this debt crisis is important.

MATTHEWS: If we have a crisis in August, will you resign?

So, elected officials should resign if the positions they take end up being wrong?

If that's the case, shouldn't the President have resigned the second unemployment rose above eight percent? After all, his administration promised that if the stimulus package was passed, that wouldn't happen.

And shouldn't former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have resigned when ObamaCare didn't produce "400,000 jobs almost immediately" like she promised?

And shouldn't Vice President Biden have resigned when the economy didn't start producing up to 500,000 jobs a month like he promised last summer?

Or should only Republicans be held to Mr. Matthews' new standard?

Fortunately, Walsh was having none of this:

WALSH: Chris, hey, Chris, will you resign? Will you leave your show?

MATTHEWS: I don't hold a public office.

WALSH: Chris, what kind of a silly question is that?

MATTHEWS: I don't hold a fiduciary -- you know what? Because you're saying it doesn't matter. Because the silliness is on the part of those who say we don’t have to act.

WALSH: No, the silliness is on the questions you’re asking me.

Well, Matthews doesn't hold public office, and he doesn't have a fiduciary responsibility, but he is a so-called journalist that has been telling people for weeks that if the debt ceiling isn't raised, there's going to be a financial crisis.

If Walsh should have to resign if he's wrong, shouldn't Matthews?

Not surprisingly, one of the biggest hypocrites on television today feels he can make dire predictions to the public with total impunity whilst others should put their careers on the line when doing so.

Will Chrissy-Boy and Obama resign?

Submitted by Slyrr on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 9:15pm.

Will Matthews and Obama resign if raising taxes and spending trillions does?

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

Resign resign r e s i g n !

Submitted by neutron on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 9:54pm.

Chrissy, you two-faced swissy, when will you balance your act?

Obama, Pelosi, and Reid spent their $$$timulus, and yet the economy tanked, so when will you call for them to resign?

Let's see, if each month, the new unemployment filings are 450,000+ then after a year, that is 12 x 450K+ and after two years, it is now over 14 million unemployed out of 300 million in the US, while 47% (about 135 million) of those are not working at all because they are on the government dole, and Chissy, why haven't you called on Reid, Pelosi and Obama (who is not a Muslim) to resign?

Because you are a comet-strike flaming liberal who doesn't care about the US or world economy, you just want Dems in the majority while we all go bankrupt.

Tingles the Clown

Submitted by Chris Norman on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 9:18pm.

Of course Matthews asks silly questions - he's a circus clown after all. We need to get him into big polka dots and floppy shoes - he already has the red nose. He doesn't need a squirting daisy - he sprays from the mouth. All we need is a good clown name for him. How about "Tingles the Clown"? I like that one.

Matthews should also demand

Submitted by guein on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 9:37pm.

Matthews should also demand the resignation of Barney Frank for his part in the housing crisis that almost collasped the economy and continues to hamper it to this day. Trump makes the call: Matthews is a LOSER.

Guein - you'll appreciate this on Barney Fank

Submitted by Gary Hall on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 10:01pm.

How it progressed - in his words.

  • 2005 - Barney Frank: What Housing Bubble? This is not dangerous like Clinton’s Dot.Com bubble
  • June 27, 2005. Rep. Barney Frank on the floor of the House attacking those who are concerned about the housing bubble:
  • . .we have, I think, an excessive degree of concern right now, about home ownership ... but those who argue that housing prices are now at the point of a bubble seem to me to be missing a very important point. Unlike previous examples we have had where substantial excessive inflation of prices may have caused some problems, we are talking here about here about an entity, home ownership - homes - where there is not the degree of leverage that we have seen elsewhere. This is not the Dot.com situation.. homes.. may see and ebb and flow in the price at a certain percentage level but you're not going to see the collapse that you see when people talk about a bubble, and so those on our committee, in particular, will continue to push for home ownership.

Excerpt from an interview given by Barney Frank on the Tavis Smiley show on PBS on April 20, 2009, where Rep. Frank astonishingly claims that conservatives are to blame for the housing collapse, and that he has been in favor of rental housing for low-income earners all along. .. but Tavis Smiley is caught completely off guard.. “.. you can’t tell me you want to sell these folks short on the American Dream.”

  • 2009 - Barney Frank Rewrites History - Says Poor Should Not Own Homes – The conservatives forced them to buy  (Wow! Bill Clinton and Andrew Cuomo are conservatives?)

Now - same as with Tavis Smiley.. Once again, Rep Frank is blaming the push into homes on Bush and conservatives Larry King is confused on the shift from pushing poor minorities into buying homes.. into renting.. King: “but Barney, didn’t you support Fannie Mae and the like ..?” Barney interrupts him and says, ‘ rental housing.. I was very critical.. I was pushing them to do more rental housing, and that’s a big distinction.

  • Barney Frank Caught Lying About Fannie Mae’

It's high past time that some national media anchor get him on air, plays these three clips of him, and asks him if he'll resign on the spot.

Great point regarding Frank

Submitted by Galvanic on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 7:56am.

The irony in Matthews' pathetic question to Walsh is that we arrived at this debt ceiling considerably earlier than had been forecast because of the stimulus and the last budget past by the Democratic Congress and President. In other words, they brought on the crisis without any positive outcomes in terms of unemployment and economic growth in return.

But Matthews would never suggest that Obama, Reid, or Pelosi resign. He suggests that their opponents should resign for trying to fix the problem.

Why are these GOP Congressmen so brain dead?

Submitted by jdripper on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 11:26pm.

Chris Matthews has an audience of less then a million people a night. In the Summer it is even less. His audience is rabid liberal. Tell me why these conservatives and congressmen go there and get the crap kicked out of them like this tool and Grover Norquist did. Are the egos of the conservatives so huge that they believe they will go on a show like this and with their tremendous acumen and brilliance turn his audience to the right? What thoughts are going through their mind to go on that show. What? Why?

I concur. There is nothing to gain for any Republican/Conservative to appear on shows hosted by scumbags like Mathews and the other pro-Democrats hosts, especially when they are treated in a hostile manner. It is time for Republicans to just blow off Mathews and his ilk. Then maybe these pro-Obama so called journalists will not act in a condescending an arrogant manner.

Submitted by jawebster1 on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 2:30am.

For one thing, little Chrissy got beat up pretty badly according to the clip I saw on Fox News. (See my comment above.)

For another thing, when Republicans fight back we have the advantage because we almost always have the best argument.

Who knows, maybe someone in his paltry liberal audience will see the light and be persuaded to change sides.

On second thought, a liberal seeing the light may be too much to hope for.

Quarantine

Submitted by Chris Norman on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 9:06am.

Unfortunately, Walsh is the very rare exception, rather than the rule. Most GOP guests sit there, like they're on trial in a kangaroo court, unable to respond to to the crazy prosecutor and judge, Tingles the Clown, browbeating them non-stop. Nope, I also believe that most MSM shows, especially those on MSNBC, should be quarantined zones reserved for liberals only. Conservatives and Republicans appearing on them only provide a fig leaf that these shows present "both sides".

Watching Rep. Joe Walsh Masterfully...

Submitted by Conservator on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 12:43pm.

...manhandle the malicious Mat-Choose was like manna from heaven. Chris made an attempt to attack Rep. Walsh for stating Obama is a liar. Too bad the maleficent Matthews didn't read the NYT's story reported by MRC:

Book Challenges Obama on Mother’s Deathbed Fight - Published: July 13, 2011

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/14/us/politics/14mother.html?_r=2&scp=3&sq=kevin%20sack&st=cse

"...During his presidential campaign and subsequent battle over a health care law, Mr. Obama quieted crowds with the story of his mother’s fight with her insurer over whether her cancer was a pre-existing condition that disqualified her from coverage.

In offering the story as an argument for ending pre-existing condition exclusions by health insurers, the president left the clear impression that his mother’s fight was over health benefits for medical expenses.

But in “A Singular Woman: The Untold Story of Barack Obama’s Mother,” author Janny Scott quotes from correspondence from the president’s mother to assert that the 1995 dispute concerned a Cigna disability insurance policy and that her actual health insurer had apparently reimbursed most of her medical expenses without argument..."

Proof Obama lies whenever the truth gets in the way of his radical leftist adgenda.
