Republican Joe Walsh Taunts 'Bully' Chris Matthews: Obama 'Sends a Tingle Up Your Leg'

By Scott Whitlock | July 19, 2011 | 18:17

Republican Congressman Joe Walsh didn't put up with Chris Matthews' "bullying" on Tuesday, mocking the liberal MSNBC anchor for his effusive praise of Barack Obama. Over the host's frequent interruptions, the Illinois Representative taunted, "Hey, Chris, your President, who sends a tingle up your leg-"

Walsh appeared to discuss the debt ceiling debate and what Republicans are willing to cut. The Congressman jokingly referred to Matthews' famous 2008 remark that an Obama speech created a "thrill going up my leg." A seemingly chagrined Matthews dismissed, "Okay. Here we go. This is where I thought we'd end up."

The anchor resorted to arguing semantics, reminding, "And first of all, tingles is your word."

[See video below. MP3 audio here.]

Walsh continued to fight back, bombarding, "He doesn't send a thrill up my leg, Chris, all right? And he has not been serious about this debt crisis and why don't you jump on that?"

Later, Walsh slammed Matthews for his propensity to interrupt guests, declaring, "You know what you do? You bully guests. Answer me a question: Did the President ignore the debt situation in his State of the Union address?"

The Hardball host quickly talked over Walsh and went to break.

Matthews may argue about the difference between "tingle" and "thrill," but it's not the only such remark he's made. On July 27, 2004, during the Democratic National Convention, the journalist alerted viewers that then-Senator Obama had created a "chill" in "my legs."

A partial transcript of the July 19 Hardball exchanges follow:

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Your bill doesn't specify cuts. It calls in ten years for reduction in government spending to 19.9 percent of the economy. Are you happy with that number that would reduce it to, basically, $3 trillion from $3.75? It really doesn't change that much. But, my point to you is do you really think you're going to get two-thirds vote in the House for a balanced budget amendment? Two-thirds vote?

JOE WALSH (R-Ill) : Hey, Chris, the fiscal situation now, this President-

MATTHEWS: Will you get- You said you're going to get a two thirds vote?

WALSH: Yes! Yes. It's so severe  that we have a great chance this year to pass this out of the House. Look, 80 percent of the American people believe in a balanced budget amendment. Most states have to live according to one. All households do. This is something Americans understand. And I'm telling you, all of these Democrats, Chris that have not put forth a plan or a budget, they are going to have to sign on as well.

MATTHEWS: Okay. Just to repeat what's obvious to everybody watching. Your plan does not have any cuts in it. It-

WALSH: Hey, Chris, what's the President's plan? Hey, Chris, explain the President's plan.

MATTHEWS: That's the point. It's tit for tat. That's not the point. I pointed out that your party has said the President doesn't have a plan. Your plan doesn't have any cuts in it. Would you explain that to me?

WALSH: Hey, Chris, your President, who sends a tingle up your leg-

MATTHEWS: He's our president, first of all.

WALSH: Your President-

MATTHEWS: Okay. Here we go. This is where I thought we'd end up. Okay.

WALSH: Your President has not been serious in six months. Why do you ignore that, Chris? Why do you ignore that?

MATTHEWS: I think it's our President. I think it's our President.

WALSH: He is our President.

MATTHEWS: And first of all, tingles is your word. So, let's go on.

WALSH: He doesn't send a thrill up my leg, Chris, all right? And he has not been serious about this debt crisis and why don't you jump on that?

...
WALSH: Chris did he support his own debt commission?

MATTHEWS: Did you?

WALSH: No. Did he mention debt in the State of the Union? Come on!

MATTHEWS: Okay, let's stop absurdities. Every time you make a challenge to him I ask you, do you have specific cuts? No.

WALSH: Hey, Chris, this is what you do on your show.

MATTHEWS: What's that?

WALSH: This is what- You know what you do? You bully guests. Answer me a question: Did the President ignore the debt situation in his State of the Union address?

MATTHEWS: The President- We have seen this issue coming, sir. And you have planned for it and this kind of obstructionism from the beginning. You guys have been organizing yourselves. No. Organizing to bring this to a crisis and you've succeeded.

Softball/No Balls

Submitted by CradleofIdiocy on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 7:11pm.

I was positively gleeful when I saw the look on that fat windbag's face after the Congressman brought up the "thrill up my leg" comment. I work in the media and I bet the people in the back busted out laughing when that comment was made, and Softball probably heard it in his IFB (earpiece).

Every person Softball/No Balls interviews should start doing that.

I almost threw the remote through my television when I saw that POS Matthews on the History Channel's Lost Kennedy tapes a couple of weeks ago. Of course, even the History Channel has been infected by the suicidal virus of Liberalism so they were fawning over not just JFK (who would be considered conservative by today's standards) but that lowlife murderer, in my opinion, Ted Kennedy.

In any case, glad to see the Congressman stand up to the oldstream media like this. If only more would do the same thing.

As Rick Perry has said, we have to stop apologizing for our conservative values and start standing up for our rights.

We can't neccessarily count on a lot of the entrenched Republicans to be as bold..........somewhere along the line they became geldings, or at least have been eating too much saltpeter.

I also liked that Las Vegas casino guy's rant on Boy Blunder - that was about as straight-forward as it can be put, from a business point of view. I can't understand why the guy is a Dem who VOTED for Boy Blather, and ALSO supports Harry 'the weasel' Reid.........although that might be one of those 'doing business in Vegas' deals. Steve Wynn is a grade A

Submitted by amyshulk on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 9:30pm.

Steve Wynn is a grade A a-hole, but he's seen the light. Sorta. Whichever side will give him the playing field that gives him the advantage will have his support. He sounds good only because he knows which way the wind is blowing.

I don't get why people are surprised that these "tycoons" support D's - after all, the "poor" can't contribute the big bucks to campaigns, am I right?

Well, Ms. 'I hate peas'............it would appear that the Obama REGIME did NOT give Mr. Wynn the advantageous side of the playing field...........which isn't surprising. And apparantly he didn't 'donate' enough money to garner a 'favorable' status within the REGIME either.

I don't know anything about the guy, other than what I've read. I do think he smacked down Boy Barry pretty good in this rant, which is a step up, coming from a Democrat tycoon who also suppored the weasel Harry Reid.

Oh........I made a very delicious split pea soup, with all kinds of other goodies inside. I'd give you a bowl of it....and you can pick around the peas and eat everything else!!! Hahahahahaha!!!

Thanks for the invite, but I respectfully decline :->

I've lived in Vegas since '93, and my first experience hearing Wynn speak was right after he opened Treasure Island. He was incredibly rude and belittling and he left a really bad taste in my mouth - just like peas, lol!

While in college, I voiced my opinion of him in class {Hotel & Casino mgmt. - don't ask} and there were some who stood up for him and said he was an excellent employer.

I find it amusing we {collectively} get that the businessman is playing the game on the field in the way it was designed, yet we pillory the congresscritters for doing the same.

I take into account a congresscritter's past behavior, but I don't *totally* discount them for it. IF a D or an R says he/she has seen the light and they will work to put gov't. in the correct pecking order, with the States basically autonomous and the Fed acting as the referee, I expect them to work towards that goal, and bring their fellows along.

Until the playing field and the rules of the game are changed, it's all just noise.

Republicans should just send someone to *Walsh up* Chris Matthews every night (so twice a day with the repeat). One after the other after the other. I like that Joe Walsh referenced Matthew's 'tingle' AND the 'thrill'. He was toying with Matthews. It was masterful.

He's "the" President

Submitted by CobraMan on Tue, 07/19/2011 - 10:15pm.

"He's our president, first of all."

No, he is not. I don't work for Government. I don't work for Obama. He's no more MY President than the President of GE is.

Obama is not my President, nor is he your President, nor he is the President, the Leader, of anyone else, outside of the military, the federal government itself, or his own staff. He's THE President, he's THE top administrator of government. He's not a King, or a God. He's not a ruler, he's an administrator, and that's ALL that he is. This attitude that Obama, or any other President for that matter, is, somehow, the leader of us all needs to change. He is, in fact, supposed to FOLLOW the lead of Congress, which is supposed to follow the lead of the individual Congressman's constituents. He's supposed to follow OUR lead, we're not supposed to follow his! THAT'S how America is supposed to work. That's WHY the Founding Fathers structure the federal government the way they did. They didn't want America, as a nation, to be ruled by a Monarch. They didn't want a single leader, with the entire government, and society itself, subservient to that single leader. They wanted everyone to be able to lead themselves, with the government subservient to us, and not the other way around. Until we return to that working relationship, one with the "common man" at the top and the "leaders" at the bottom, nothing will ever improve. It can only get worse.

Did you feel that Bush and Reagan were your Presidents? I did, even though I didn't vote for them. My family is all over the ideological map, but we all feel Obama is our President, the same as we all felt about previous Presidents, Democrat and Republican alike. I understand your thesis, but I don't believe it necessarily precludes the notion of the current occupant of the Oval Office being "our" President.

Jer, if I had a dollar for every 'he's not MY president' bumper sticker I saw over here during the Bush years..........I'd have a lot of bills paid!!! So it's OK for the Bush-haters to say that (along with everything else), but if one of us says that we don't consider Boy Barry to be 'our' president, there's somethng wrong with it???

Personally, I DON'T consider Boy Blunder to be MY president, because he has NO understanding - nor does he want to have any- of the America that I believe in and was raised in and want my kids and grandkids to live in. And both of my sons have been in the military - one still is - and they have no respect for him as Commander in Chief, and I think that's a pretty prevalent view throughout the military.

I just landed a new job yesterday - small remodel (welcome to Obamaville) - and somewhere in our conversation, my client said (without any provocation) that Obama was not HER president!!! Well, at least I know I"m not going to be working in enemy territory, which has happened before..............

Thje guy commands NO respect from anyone who is reliable, responsible, dependable, ethical, lilbery-minded, and a believer in the tenants of our Constitution and our founding fathers - and I DON'T want to hear any crap about slavery, either!!! And, to tell you the truth (as I see it), I don't even think a lot of his syncophants and backers and followers actually have too much respect for him either - it's more like they are on the train - they pointed the train in that direction - and they've got to stay on for the ride.

But not only does this manchild not command respect, but he demands it like a petulant child.  And the majority of the military hate this guy in the CIC's seat.

It's been said that in the military, if your soldiers don't respect you as a leader, your enemies can defeat you regardless of how powerful your military is.  Wish I could remember where I read that.  I wonder if that was Sun Tsu.

If by decimated, you mean "gutted", it's a vast overstatement. If you mean reduced by a factor of ten, it's probably an understatement. But, the fact is he merely continued a downward trend which was begun under Reagan and was adhered to by Bush I.

Clinton also had complicit GOP Congresses for the final six years of his presidency. The US still spent far more than its principal adversaries, and as much as the next six nations combined. One further point, Clinton dramatically increased military spending during the last year or two of his second term.

Jer, I was looking at the chart titled Discretionary Outlays for Defense and Nondefense Spending, 1970 to 2020 on Page 4 of Discretionary Spending. I don't see the "dramatic increase" in military spending you are talking about. Could you give me your reference, so I might compare the two.

From what I can tell, by looking at the graph, defense spending went from about 5.5% to 3% of GDP during the Clinton years.

To avoid making the hard choices {SSA/Medicare} he *did* decimate our military.

I have number dyslexia - failed pre-algebra twice - later got to trig., but it didn't stick ;-P so I don't cite percentages and such.

I was there and saw it. I saw that those with seniority were targeted for removal, but it was sweetened with a "bonus" to get out/not re-up.

I get that those with seniority cost more, but IMHO, that targeting decimated the command structure, and changed it for the worse.

You act as though the claims for Obama not representing people and Bush not representing people are entirely equivalent, as expected from someone who spends his life trying to find the moral equivalence in everything. Why don't you go get busy making the case for legalizing pedophilia, Jer? That's in line with your profession and your inclination.

Jer, I think I catch your drift about the 'they do it too'..........but I don't really look at it that way. I know a lot of delusional libs over here (and a fair share of them are even MORE deluded at the fact that their Boy Barry is such a friggin' disaster!!!), so I knew what was going on with the bumper stickers and the rest of the Bush Derangement Syndrom. Hell, I probably suffer from Obama Derangement Syndrom - or at least calling it that. Excpet I don't feel 'deranged' at all, and I can base my opinions and ideas on a lot of proveable criteria and facts. I think it's just a matter of who's 'right' and who's 'not right', you know??? I thought the anti-Bush people were wrong about many things - but they didn't. And I think I'm right about a lot of my Obama ideas........and somehow, a growing number of these libs and Obama voters are starting to see it the same way!!!

As for my new work, of course it's 'shovel ready'!!! Unlike Boy Barry and the rest of those 'on high'...........I NEED to deliver progress and a product in order to get paid, so I make DAMN SURE that - not only is it shovel ready, but that we start immediatly and move forward with our work!!!

Nice try on the guilt trip.

If you want Obama to be your president, fine.

I dislike the pos, didn't vote for him, and based on what I have seen from him so far, the people who did vote for him are fookin' idiots.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it and quit trying to make it sound like there is something wrong with those of us who see this lying piece of shit for what he is.

Your sense of duty or obligation to and blind support for the fool is your problem, not mine.

Unfortunately, what liberal Democrats and entitlement junkies foisted on this country has resulted in a rising tide that instead of lifting or floating all boats equally, is going to drown all.

Zackly.  No malice, just swapping healthy insults.

As for the air fare, I flew first class on someone else's dime once; into Atlanta, as a matter of fact, and it was pretty cool.  These days though, with the TSA turkeys lurking with a penchant for fondling even defenseless foundlings, there ain't no place I want to go that involves flying.

I have nothing against the Obama kids;  Obammie-jammer ain't their fault; and as far as ol' Bo, if he lived at my house he would be canine #9 (not to be confused with client #9).

As far as ODS, you are correct.  I have been considering a tattoo, but can't decide whether to go with 'ODS' in Gothic script on my forehead, or 'Obama's Ass Sucks Canal Water"  lettered in Swahili along my right forearm.   :o)

And when he does have conservative guests in-studio for interviews, does he act as beligerant, crude, rude, and hostile as compared to when his conservative guess is interviewed via satellite?

I wish more Republicans would

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 11:54am.

I wish more Republicans would take on pompous airheads like Matthews instead of treating them with kid gloves. During the entire debt ceiling battle I have seen numerous conservatives interviewed by pro-tax hike multimillionaire journalists and not once NOT ONCE has one of these conservatives come to the interview prepared with comments like:

  • "Why do you allow your employer to pay you an obscene $10 million a year salary?"

  • "OK, show me your last tax return. I you really support the idea of increased taxation then I won't find any deductions, contributions to retirement accounts, or any other means of reducing your tax burden."

  • "I see you live in Manhattan where the rent is a bajillion dollars a month. Isn't that greedy of you? Wouldn't it be more fair of you to donate that excess cash to charity or the government and live somewhere cheaper?"

It is simply inexcusable that conservatives don't take the battle to them considering how easy it would be to wage.

Seriously, why are Republicans afraid to take on these hate-filled arrogant hypocrites at every turn? Why don't they ever go on the offensive? You can have a man like Bill Maher rattle on and on about how the Left never engages in hate speech yet his very own show is filled with the most vile hate speech ever aired on TV. I've been saying it for years.

The way these Republicans walk on eggshells and behave like doormats only makes them look weak and insecure in their beliefs. The people who believe in turning the other cheek or that good will always prevail over evil are fools. We are living in the reality of how foolish those beliefs are!  People were praising Bush because he wouldn't address the hate speech directed towards him and I'd like to ask those people "how's that working out for you?" because living under this communist regime is the result of years of "turning the other cheek".

Yeah, that's a long-standing

Submitted by Beukeboom on Wed, 07/20/2011 - 12:34pm.

Yeah, that's a long-standing feud. They do not like each other professionally and personally. Wasserman-Schultz is a coward though since she won't confront West in person. West, on the other hand, has no problem whatsoever telling Wasserman-Schultz what he thinks of her in no uncertain terms.

Note to Rep. West...glad you didn't use another word instead of "heck that also ends in "ck". :-)

The most inane section of the LA Times story came from the quote by Jonathan Beeton, communications director for Wasserman Schultz:

"I don't think that Congressman West is upset at the congresswoman, but rather with the fact that she highlighted that he and other Republicans are once again trying to balance the budget on the backs of seniors, children and the middle class."

I call major bravo sierra on that claim by Beeton. West is indeed upset at Wasserman-Schultz and has not hidden his dislike of her. And not only is Wasserman-Schultz brazenly lying about West and what the conservatives there are actually trying to do, Beeton is as well. Apparently not only is Wasserman-Schultz classless but some of those, like Beeton for instance, are just as classless.
