Newsweek's Clift Says Press Don't Care About Romney's Mormonism Hours Before Mag Reveals Cover Story On It

Newsweek's Eleanor Clift said on PBS's "McLaughlin Group" Friday that the press really aren't interested in Mitt Romney being a Mormon.

This amazingly transpired roughly 24 hours before her magazine revealed a June 13-20 cover story about Romney entitled "The Mormon Moment: How the Outsider Faith Creates Winners" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

JOHN MCLAUGHLIN, HOST: You see Mormonism blocking Romney?

ELEANOR CLIFT, NEWSWEEK: I think Pat’s describing himself as the candidate that the Republicans are looking for.

PAT BUCHANAN: A younger me!

CLIFT: Run, Pat. A younger you, exactly. I think if you look at the stories that were written about Mitt Romney’s announcement you really have to search to find anything about Mormons. I think, you know, we had that discussion four years ago, and frankly I think now that we've elected Barack Obama, I don't think you can flatly say anybody’s going to be disqualified because of their religion or their ethnicity.

The "McLaughlin Group" is typically recorded late Friday afternoon or early evening.

On Saturday at 8:04PM, the Daily Beast released the following picture for Newsweek's upcoming issue:

You really can't make this stuff up!

this is interesting

So she had no idea her own magazine was doing that - suggesting she is completely out of the editorial loop - or she is so dishonest that she really does not care. Either way, incidents like this should disqualify her from being seen as a reliable media critic.... it sure would be the end of a conservative's career.

I think Eleanor is out of the

I think Eleanor is out of the loop. She's a "contributing editor" but that might just be an empty title. I don't know if she has any connection to editorial decisions made on what will be covered.

She's out of the loop in more ways than one

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 06/06/2011 - 9:57am.

Beltway denizen Clift's blabber on TV is nothing more than WH talking points and knee-jerk liberalism. She's as ignorant of the Left's true actions as she is of American society as a whole.

She's always been a Dem mouthpiece

Submitted by Quasi-socialist on Mon, 06/06/2011 - 5:10pm.

ready to toe the party line. She practically reads Dem talking points of McLaughlin Group. She's a lightweight and a mouthpiece at best. I have turned her name into a synonym for flub: A Clift.

I remember........

Submitted by GregE on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 5:52pm.

..........when the Newsweek cover was the exact same as that, only with the face of Barack Obama and the headline "The Marxist Moment, How the Chicago Way Creates Winners."

oh, there wasn't one like that?

Since I never read Newsweek, does anyone know . . .

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 06/06/2011 - 10:03am.

. . . if it described what it means by the term outsider faith?  I wonder what they consider other outsider faiths.  Ba-haism?  Scientology?  Witchcraft? Wahabbist Islam?

Obviously the PTB at Newstweek don't think enough of "Eleanor...

...over the Cliff" to even keep her in the loop.

Either that, or she doesn't read her emails.

That cover

Submitted by Clutch1956 on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 9:33pm.

That cover is supposed to scare me? Nope, Romney's religion doesn't bother me in the least bit. His Mormonism beats the living daylights out of Teh Won's love of the teachings of Marx, Engels, Stalin, Lenin, Ayers, Alinsky & Zinn (now that right there is scare-eee!)

Why does she get to be on anything?

Submitted by Chris Norman on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 10:11pm.

Does this shrill woman ever get anything right? How can anyone be so demonstrably wrong every time and still be on television - even posing as a knowledgeable pundit? All I can guess is that McLaughlin keeps her on for comic relief - or else she has compromising photos of him.

Apparently the memo about the newest edition of Newsweek didn't reach Clift's home planet.

So according to the media,

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 10:57pm.

So according to the media, Weinergate is not a real issue but whether or not someone is a Mormon is major news? I couldn't care less.

Another Baghdad Bob moment for Clift

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 06/06/2011 - 9:55am.

Once again, Clift is totally wrong.  Maybe that's why she's a regular on The McLaughlin Group.
