Newsweek Cover Focuses on Mitt Romney Being Mormon (With Image from Anti-Mormon Musical)
Is it appropriate to be focusing on a presidential candidate's religion in 2011?
Newsweek certainly thinks it is, and created a cover for its June 13-20 issue prominently highlighting Mitt Romney being a Mormon in a fashion that is guaranteed to raise a few eyebrows:

What you probably can't make out is the following at Romney's right bicep:

Yes, it says, "Mitt Romney, Mormon for President!"
Not very subtle, is it?
The image led Real Clear Politics' Tom Bevan to tweet Sunday, "This leaves me dumbfounded."
In fairness to Newsweek, this cover is a parody of the poster of the Broadway show "The Book of Mormon" as marvelously discovered by my Twitter pal @ClericalGal.
But is this an appropriate way to introduce a serious presidential candidate to your readers?

A candidate's religion should not matter any more than the pigment of his or her skin. Their ideology and experience are what should be taken into consideration.
Leftists exploit race, religion and everything else while crying racism, Islamophobia, sexism, etc whenever conservatives criticize the actions of liberals. They have cornered the market on hypocrisy.
I believe Romney is a good man. From what I've seen of Mormons, they are a credit to our nation. I wish more had their ethics, patriotism and morals.
I do not support Romney because he is a big-government moderate RINO and we have enough of those. We need a conservative warrior willing to take on the left, political correctness and the insanity of our out-of-control government!

I don't agree that a candidate's religion does not make a difference. Obama may, or may not be a undeclared Muslim. He at least has Muslim bias. Ones religion does make a difference no matter how you look at it. Ones religion will affect a persons world view, behavior etc etc. It is unavoidable period. You can not devide a person from there belief system. Try to devide a person from their belief system and you may as well cut their head off, the dividing can't be done. If Obama is a Muslim or has a Muslim bias, that is dangerous for America and the world.
Speaking of cutting off heads....

I haven't heard of any Mormons doing that. Have there been instances of Muslims cutting peoples' heads off? Maybe someone's religion DOES matter.
The real intent
Submitted by MidAmerica on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 11:52am.
Not only is the intent to make Romney look foolish but the reason the Mormon angle is worked hard is because they know a lot of conservatives are biased against Mormons and this is an attempt to fan the flames. The Leftist media is working hard to find and exploit a negative narrative for each Republican that dares step forward to challenge 'The One'.

There's nothing new with MSM coverage of Romney. Newsweek and others will constantly reind their audience that Romney is a Mormon, and let prejudice create doubt.
To the Left and even some among evangelical Christians, Romney's religion makes him unacceptable as a President.

I had nearly forgotten that Reid is a Mormon...Do we hear the MSM hypocrites calling the country's attention to that fact? Nope, and we never will, but Romney is targeted about it because he's a Republican. The left is so full of themselves and their phony blathering about "tolerance" for all beliefs and religions, unless, of course, the person in question happens to be a Repub/conservative...Then, it's all bets are off.

Has it occurred to you that the fact Romney is making his second run at a national office--while Reid never has--is a factor in the nature and extent of the media attention. Nevada is the fourth leading state in terms of LDS membership percentages--a much higher ratio than that of the nation as a whole, and therefore a much less important consideration in that state's electoral contests in contrast to presidential elections.

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 12:49pm.
I like Romney's stance on Federalism. It's a great way for him to explain how he could enact the type of health care he did while governor of Mass., and at the same time say it's nor right for the nation as a whole, and ObamaCare should be dismantled. At the same time he's going on this Federalism path, I can't help but think he's doing it for political expediency, as I didn't hear his federalist message in 2008.
His support, no matter how tentative, of man-made global warming is very problematic, though. The science is way from certain on any of this stuff, and the data available to conclude any of this doesn't go back that far, even if the data is over 100 years old. I question anyone's judgment if they buy into any of this nonsense.

I checked your link, JusAl, and didn't see Romney saying states in general or Texas in particular are problems. I read it more as Romney doing political cover for enacting health care legislation in Mass, while that same type of legislation wouldn't work in Texas.

Based on the logical assumption that someone who promotes state financed healthcare and then points out that a particular state makes extending this philosophy nationally impractical is that he does not care for the state of Texas.

And earlier, I said I like his current message of federalism, which was lacking from his 2008 campaign. I wish more candidates actually focused their message on federalism. If we truly practiced federalism, more states would resemble Texas.
I don't really think Romney is a federalist. I think it's a way for him to explain a position of anti-Obama care and his actions as governor of Mass. I do like how his running is going to actually engage people in the argument concerning federalism.

Franklin once said that the framers gave us a Republic, if we could keep it. With the seventeenth amendment, we lost it. What's left is so screwed up that the left convinces people that the way to give "power to the people" is to let the federal government take car of (and control of) everything. Of course, today, if you bring up the subject of states' rights you're labeled a racist and neo-confederate.
Here we go again
Submitted by Unsane on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 8:41pm.
Too many people believe that if we just repealed the 17th Amendment, we will all magically witness a major improvement in the government. We will all see the glory days of Daniel Webster and Henry Clay once again, right? Fat chance. You know what Senators appointed directly by state governments will do in this day and age? Simple: raid the federal treasury early and often, or orders of the state governments and the state government's voters, to bring home the bacon so that the state governments can cover their asses.
Unfortunately the concept of federalism is a TEENSY bit more complex than that. And I would argue that what has crippled the concept of turning to state governments as a possible solution was killed by something else entirely: the New Deal and FDR. That the 17th Amendment was in effect then is coincidental.

Phony controversy
Submitted by nkviking75 on Sun, 06/05/2011 - 2:55pm.
This is a repeat of the leftist strategy of 2008 to try to drive a wedge between Republicans. The meme was that evangelicals were a bunch of redneck bigots who would not vote for a Mormon no matter what. But most evangelicals recognize that they won't always get a chance to vote for one of their own, and the largely positive image Mormons have would probably help with a lot of evangelicals. In Iowa's 2008 Republican caucuses, former Baptist minister Mike Huckabee came in first, but Mitt Romney was a strong second. If the evangelicals hadn't had one of their own to vote for, Romney may well have been the winner.
IMHO, Romney's faith would only disqualify him with a very tiny minority of the electorate. If he loses, this phony controversy will allow the media to duck the electorate's disdain for government health care and global warming taxes.

The only thing worth reading in a typical issue was Will's writing. Other than that the commentary and reporting was just plain awful, as Newsweak increasingly revealed itself to be a mouthpiece for the Democratic party. And much like other U.S. media outlets, their coverage of world events went to pot after the events of August 1991 told them "OK, we can totally forget about the Outside World once and for all".
I do not mourn its gradual disappearance from magazine racks at the local supermarkets.

...and you seem to miss something else, not spelled out by me - so its not entirely your fault - I hated the "CW" column because it was a constant attempt by the mag to show us "Look at how clever WE can be!", BUT Clinton DID get a few "down arrows" here and there, as it did "measure" week to week performance in the world of politics.
I agree with you there, but still, Newsweak wasn't fit to wipe myself with when I allowed the subscription to lapse in 1998. It has ONLY gotten WORSE.

It's not Romney's religion Mormonism - it's his RINOism

If Romney has made up his mind about one thing it is probably being a Mormon. But with every other issue he goes to the left and then to the right and then in the middle and over again and it usually depends on who he is talking to at the time. He has more twists and spins than the Mormons allow. Shoul be avoided at all intersections - you just don't know which way he is going to turn. Not a safe bet for the Presidency.
I think I am the only person

I think I am the only person that watched the 20 some odd debates in 2007 and 8 by the Republicans. Romney being able to speak in an organized and thought out manner, to every question he was asked. I mean I watched like 40 hours of that stuff at least, I saw all of them up there, including Huckabee. (Who if McCain would have picked, Palin would not have caused the loss)
I guess I want an Aircraft Pilot to be knowledgeable and skilled, unless they are a Mormon, then forget them, and go gal who thinks Paul Revere is a bell ringing, tall tale. He had 4 bells in each hand, each bell the size of pumpkin, and he rang them as he road his giant horsey, the Bells could be heard for miles. Bells if by land, trumpets if by Sea, and it was Bells, Bells she tells you.
Pardon me if I want the person that can think completely, organized, and give answers that are not just sound bites. Gotcha questions like what is your take away after your visit. ummmmm BELLS
Democrat media says Massachusetts Health care = Obama care
YOU SAY WHAT
MSM says you should hate that, you must after all
YOU SAY I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT, I MUST...I MUST....anyone talk to anyone in MA....ahhhh never mind they say I must, I must I must.
They say Romney can not win.
YOU SAY....I belive you, I believe you....is the purple grape?

Palin didn't cause McCains loss. After announcing her as running mate, he took the lead. A lead he didn't lose until he "suspended" his campaign.

Is it remotely possible, tomparrot, for you to go an entire NB post without reminding us about how much you hate Sarah Palin?
We get it. You hate her, and you will not rest until everyone in America, if not the world, hates her as much as you do. Nothing in life makes you happy, except for the thought that one day, with your efforts and redundancy, all of America wil unite to do one of two things: 1) run her out of the country or 2) flay her flesh from her bones and then triumphantly publicly burn the remains.
we f***ing get it. Try to be a creative thinker for once.
