UN Scrubs Errant 50 Million Global Warming Refugees Prediction From Website

As NewsBusters reported Tuesday, the United Nations in 2005 wrongly predicted there would be 50 million environmental refugees by the end of the previous decade as a result of global warming.

Aaron Worthing noticed Friday that the 'handy map" the U.N. had created to identify places most at risk for such population migrations has been removed:

You might remember the other day I pointed out how the UN predicted 50 million climate refugees by 2010, a prediction that came up laughably short of the mark by only around 50 million.  Well, if you go to that post and click on the link to the UN page making that claim… something funny happens.  You get this:

Isn't that nice?

Worthing has cached screenshots of that page's content for those interested.

The man that first reported the irony of this U.N. prediction, Asian Correspondent's Gavin Atkins, noted Saturday:

In 2007, UN Under-Secretary General and Head of the UNEP, Aachim Steiner told a conference in Africa:

So I have initiated a number of reforms that will begin in the next few weeks.

Some however have already begun in terms of looking at how we can improve the transparency and accountability of this institution

He also received the Steiger Award for straight-forwardness, honesty, fairness and helpfulness.

Is the deletion of this map without adequate explanation an example of Mr Steiner’s transparency and accountability?

Indeed.

Is this what we can expect from the U.N. in the future - when one of its predictions of doom and gloom don't pan out, the evidence will get scrubbed?

That's quite a level of integrity at the organization largely responsible for all the world's panic over carbon dioxide emissions.

This should make folks even more skeptical of anything coming from this outfit.

Many have started making hard copies of the predictions, graphs, charts and data. For a long time the data has been changing.

The UN should 'scrub' their WHOLE website.............would it matter??? And they can go find another 'home' and some other fools to fund them while they're at it..............

The "science is settled".

It was all bullsheet. Liberals tried to justify research grants and jobs with alarmist bullsheet. University researchers and scientists have officially lost their minds and now believe their own bullsheet.

UNEP

Submitted by Right2thePoint on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 4:00pm.

UNEP ,the United Nations Environmental Program, was the personal fiefdom of Soros fellow traveler Maurice Strong.

It wasn't even run out of the UN only under their banner. He set it up in Central America as I recall.

The magnum opus developed by them was known as Agenda 21 which was the road map and blueprint for such things they would use later like the Global Warming push and basically every environmental cause the world has come to know.

Submitted by Right2thePoint on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 4:10pm.

The UNEP is the source of such things as the well known now IPCC and all those climate conferences all the way back to the original one in Rio up to and including the last one in Copenhagen and then Mexico.

Many would say that is all just a haven to enable the rent seekers and such who latched onto the Climate Science bandwagon and that much of their 'science' is only 'political science'.

For many it is not about environmental reasons it is just a tool to enable a political agenda.

"Fake but accurate."

I find it truly depressing that we STILL won't kick this useless group of thugs, terrorists, and Eurotards to the curb. We could build a really great skateboard park at Turtle Bay and at least our own citizens would get something out of it besides a nasty screwing.

But But But...

Submitted by The Vet on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 5:01pm.

Coupla points Mr. Sheppard.

1. The troglodyt troll says you are a big fat liar ---- Noel's false claim that the UN predicted 50 million GW Refugees by 2010 (in reality they claimed that there would be 50 million environmental refugees),  --- troglodyt, that last of the long term trolls that got all of his nastiness erased during the Great NewsBusters User Comment Loss during the changeover to the New NewsBusters in October of 2010. Those of us down here in the weeds would be greatly relieved should this finally be the last insult he spewed at one of our contributors/editors prior to his working on his retread account. I am sure Mr. Blumer will not be all that sad at this thought.

2. Whoops. They missed something. The original press release from United Nations University - As Ranks of “Environmental Refugees” Swell Worldwide, Calls Grow for Better Definition, Recognition, Support Amid predictions that by 2010 the world will need to cope with as many as 50 million people escaping the effects of creeping environmental deterioration ~ “There are well-founded fears that the number of people fleeing untenable environmental conditions may grow exponentially as the world experiences the effects of climate change and other phenomena,” says UNU-EHS Director Janos Bogardi.  --- Uh, sounds like he said the environmental conditions of CLIMATE CHANGE will make people flee and become refuges. But what do I know. I respect Mr. Sheppard and love NewsBusters and believed him the first time.

Oh dear. I miscalculated.

Submitted by The Vet on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 4:58pm.

But so did the scientists.

3. Forgot to carry the one guys. Nothing to see here. --- Fifty million "environmental refugees" will flood into the global north by 2020, fleeing food shortages sparked by climate change, experts warned at a major science conference that ended here Monday.  ~ "In 2020, the UN has projected that we will have 50 million environmental refugees," University of California, Los Angeles professor Cristina Tirado said at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

4. The AAAS? Where have I heard that before? Oh wait. Another troll. ---->
        20. Claims only 6% of scientists self-identify as Republican and 9% as Conservative --- Does that pass the smell test boys and girls? IT DOESN''T. --- ...important fine print -- specifically that the scientists that it surveyed were all members of the AAAS. I do not have detailed demographics information, but based on my experience I would guess that AAAS membership is dominated by university and government scientists. The opinion poll thus does not tell us much about US scientists as a whole, but rather something about one scientific institution -- AAAS. And the poll indicates that AAAS is largely an association that does not include Republicans.          ( from The Collected Stupid and Lies of the Stupid Lying Garlock Troll.)

Your GPS is not loaded with the correct data?

Since when do you need "correct GPS" data to access a map, especially when that "map" is in a png format? You only need GPS data to NAVIGATE a map!

Achim Steiner may not be in the same league as Al Gore or Michael Mann in the bare ass lie department but he's working on it fast. Last year he stated that the IPCC/Greenpeace AR4 Himalayan glacier error was a "typographical error".

What has to be tallied is the toll in human lives that "man-made environmental fighters" such as ethanol have caused. Because of this initiative here in the United States, the price of corn has risen like never before along with all of the other grains that cost the underdeveloped world's people 50%+ of the daily wages.

Climategate 2: Refugeegate

Submitted by Phryj1 on Sat, 04/16/2011 - 9:52pm.

Unlike their faulty and very poorly sourced climate models, this particular prediction was obviously falsifiable. Naturally, when it didn't pan out -like we ALL knew it would- they have to cover it up ASAP.

Speaking of falsifiability, that should be your first clue there's something seriously amiss with the IPCC models. Notice how no matter what the weather actually does, they claim that the models predicted it would happen. Since no matter what happens, their predictions are, according to them, correct, that means their models must be inherently unfalsifiable, and are therefore UNSCIENTIFIC. Of course, they were never meant to withstand actual scientific scrutiny anyway, they were to try and impress policymakers.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

So the report is wiped from the UN web site? Surprise, surprise

Submitted by JohnMcGrew on Sun, 04/17/2011 - 2:50pm.

Another good example of why the UN should have absolutely no oversight over any aspect of the Internet. The power to wipe embarrassing information is clearly too tempting.
