Flashback 2005: UN Predicts 50 Million Global Warming Refugees By 2010
To give you an idea of the kind of hysterical predictions the global warming crowd have made in recent years, the United Nations in 2005 actually forecast that by the end of the previous decade, there would be 50 million environmental refugees around the world as a result of climate change.
Britain's Guardian reported October 12, 2005:
Rising sea levels, desertification and shrinking freshwater supplies will create up to 50 million environmental refugees by the end of the decade, experts warn today. Janos Bogardi, director of the Institute for Environment and Human Security at the United Nations University in Bonn, said creeping environmental deterioration already displaced up to 10 million people a year, and the situation would get worse.
"There are well-founded fears that the number of people fleeing untenable environmental conditions may grow exponentially as the world experiences the effects of climate change," Dr Bogardi said. "This new category of refugee needs to find a place in international agreements. We need to better anticipate support requirements, similar to those of people fleeing other unviable situations." [...]
Hans van Ginkel, UN under-secretary-general and rector of the university, said: "This is a highly complex issue, with global organisations already overwhelmed by the demands of conventionally recognised refugees. However, we should prepare now to define, accept and accommodate this new breed of refugee."
As Gavin Atkins of the Asian Correspondent noted Monday, the U.N. back in 2005 provided a handy map to identify "places most at risk including the very sensitive low lying islands of the Pacific and Caribbean."
Atkins chose to look at census figures for some of these "at risk" locales to see whether the U.N.'s predictions - pun intended - hold water. What he discovered was that far from seeing a population exodus, many of these areas are growing in their number of homo sapiens.
These included the Bahamas, St. Lucia, Seychelles, and the Solomon Islands. Atkins continued:
Meanwhile, far from being places where people are fleeing, no fewer than the top six of the very fastest growing cities in China, Shenzzen, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhuhai, Puning and Jinjiang, are absolutely smack bang within the shaded areas identified as being likely sources of climate refugees.
Similarly, many of the fastest growing cities in the United States also appear within or close to the areas identified by the UNEP as at risk of having climate refugees.
More censuses are due to come in this year, and we await the results for Bangladesh and the Maldives - said to be places most at risk - with interest.
However, a very cursory look at the first available evidence seems to show that the places identified by the UNEP as most at risk of having climate refugees are not only not losing people, they are actually among the fastest growing regions in the world.
Kind of like predicting a team to come in last place at the beginning of the season that ends up winning the Super Bowl, wouldn't you say?
Climate realists are also ticking down Nobel Laureate Al Gore's prediction that "the world has 10 years or less to turn things around before it is too late."
Although this is from his pathetic schockumentary "An Inconvenient Truth" released in August 2006, he apparently made this claim at the Sundance Film Festival in January of that year.
Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh has been counting down the days since January 27, 2006:

In four years, nine months, and roughly fifteen days, when we're all still standing here and the world hasn't come to an end, Gore's going to have some serious splainin' to do.

Every winter, the Florida Keys have several thousand "refugees" move down looking for some "Global Warming" and "rising sea." We have it! Of course, the rising sea part is followed a few hours later by falling sea when the tide goes out, but unfortunately they don't seem to mind. They just keep sitting their asses on the beach drinking beer and doing their meds, praising The One because He sends them money from his stash, and enjoying the "Global Warming."
Of course, once the rest of the country starts to see signs of Global Warming around April or May, these urban outdoorsmen begin to migrate north where it is a little cooler.
... and I wasted my prime years working! What a sap.

Flaws in the article's argument.
Submitted by Villabolo on Tue, 04/12/2011 - 6:39pm.
This article is seriously flawed. Three points must be brought out to rebut this article:
1. It is not an argument from a person who is a climatologist or represents the IPCC, which is the UN think tank for Global Warming. He works for an environmental agency of the UN that does not specialize in Global Warming.
2. What's more, the IPCC is notorious for ultra-conservative predictions which are right but are either grossly underestimated or occur much sooner than expected. This is another reason why this particular person definitely does not represent the IPCC, let alone the more serious Climatology community. Example, the IPCC, in 2007, predicted the Arctic ice cap would be ice free (for a few days initially) in the summer by the year 2100. That was considered a ridiculous understatement by the Climatology community. Serious scientists were saying 2050 or 2040. Even those serious predictions were understatements. Those scientists could not factor into their computers all the information concerning the ice cap shrinkage. So when the actual shrinkage accelerated faster than expected, the prediction was changed to 2020-2030. Even that appears to be an underestimation. It appears that it’s actually going to be 2018.
3. Often times when a scientist or even a science fiction writer makes a prediction that actually comes true, he always gets the timing wrong. The predicted time is always sooner than the actual fulfillment of the prediction. That is why, in spite of this gross error of a non specialist in timing, the actual prediction of 50 million refugees is inevitably going to happen. Probably within the next 15-20 years (The Global Warming situation is actually accelerating).
There are many false and erroneous statements being bandied about, all of them paid for by Exxon Mobil and the Koch brothers to the tune of 54 million dollars.
If anyone is serious about investigating these issues they should listen to what the other side has to say. Go to http://skepticalscience.com/argument.php They have a list of over 150 rebuttals to common arguments on the issue of man made global warming.

"You've determined in the theatre of your own mind that it is indeed a God-given fact that the Arctic will completely melt in 2018."
If you know anything about the subject, you will realize that Arctic specialists have set the date for the Arctic sea to be "Ice free during the summer; starting initially for a few days and subsequently lengthening to weeks and then months in the years that follow." for the period of 2020-2030.
You can research this yourself, it's open knowledge in the scientific Arctic community as well as Climatologists.
My guess of 2018 is not a "God-given fact", as you state, but a good educated guess based on observing ice thickness and ice extent maps of the Arctic sea. But it hardly matters whether someone is off by a few years or even a decade or two (unlikely as that would be). What matters is that it is definitely shrinking, having lost 30% of its area and 40% of its thickness since 1980. That's close to 75% of its volume.
Now presenting what is obviously another "idiot" in your enlightened mind:
Admiral Titley, chief Navy oceanographer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CBBEyJVj5MY
Same Admiral: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSc5YImpUkQ
And a whole bunch of stuff about Climate Change by the same Pinko; Commie; hippy; faggot Nazi; conspiracy mongering; brother in law of Al Gore; Admiral Titley. Who cares that he's the top oceanographer of the Navy! If Hush Limburger; Gwenn Dreck and the other reality gods of Faux News say it's not happening then God will go along with them and change the laws of physics.
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=admiral+titley&aq=f
So, DBO, you can claim that I made up those figures but that makes it obvious that you are not familiar with the fact that these are statements made by the Climate science community. That includes Climatologists from NASA, NSIDC and NOAA. If you are not familiar with such basic knowledge, what moral right do you have to judge those that do?
BOTTOM LINE, DBO, JUST WAIT 10 YEARS. You won't even have to hold your breath because it's been happening for the past 30 years and will continue to shrink even more dramatically in the years ahead. Furthermore, that shrinkage of the ice cap is changing the weather and such changes will worsen as the years go by.
ENJOY.
PS: Look up the word "hubris". It fits you so well.
