Krauthammer: Obama's Speech 'Was a Disgrace', 'Shallow' and 'Deeply Dishonest'

By Noel Sheppard | April 13, 2011 | 21:54

Noel Sheppard's picture

Charles Krauthammer was less than pleased with Barack Obama's speech Wednesday concerning his plan to bring down the nation's staggering budget deficit.

As the panel segment of Fox's "Special Report" began, Krauthammer said, "I thought it was a disgrace. I thought I’ve rarely heard a speech by a president so shallow, so hyper-partisan, and so intellectually dishonest, outside the last couple of weeks of a presidential election where you are allowed to call your opponent anything short of a traitor" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: I thought it was a disgrace. I thought I’ve rarely heard a speech by a president so shallow, so hyper-partisan, and so intellectually dishonest, outside the last couple of weeks of a presidential election where you are allowed to call your opponent anything short of a traitor. But we're a year-and-a-half away from Election Day, and it was supposed to be a speech about policy. He didn't even get to his own alternative until more than half-way through the speech, and when he did, he threw out these numbers suspended in midair with nothing under them with all kinds of goals and guidelines and triggers which mean absolutely nothing. The speech was really and was almost entirely an attack on the Ryan plan. And it was deeply dishonest.

BRET BAIER, HOST: Paul Ryan’s plan. The budget.

KRAUTHAMMER: Let me give you one example how dishonest it was. He went on and on about how the Republicans want to steal from your grandma to lower taxes on the rich. And he talked about the Bush tax cuts and how much he’s going to stand on the bridge and oppose any extension which is what he knows how to do. He has done it over and over for the last six years. The Ryan plan is not about the Bush tax cuts. It transcends them. It's about what the deficit, what Obama’s own commission had recommended: that you strip out loopholes and you lower the rates for everyone. It’s not about whether it should be the Bush rates or the Clinton rates. The whole new approach which the Simpson-Bowles commission had recommended itself. In fact, Bowles had recommended in one of its scenarios a high rate of 23 percent. Ryan’s is at 25 percent. Obama did this knowing that this is a way to play to his base. It was a speech that was quite remarkable in how demagogic it was, and I say that with all due respect.

Having now watched the President's speech several times, I quite agree with Krauthammer.

Obama promised during his campaign to change the political tone and rhetoric in Washington as he pledged to work with folks on the opposite side of the aisle.

Last week, Congressman Ryan (R-Wisc.) presented a comprehensive plan to bring down this nation's budget deficit while reforming Medicare and Medicaid in a fashion that would make them viable for decades to come.

Rather than embrace Ryan's plan as a good effort that he was going to counter with his own vision for the future, Mr. Hope and Change attacked the Wisconsin Congressman while practically accusing the man of being the devil incarnate looking to harm old people for the benefit of the rich.

When is this nonsense going to stop?

We are a nation in a deep financial crisis that could bury us in the coming years if we don't do something about it, and the President along with virtually his entire Party want to attack the other side rather than sit down like adults and solve a problem most of us admit exists.

Obama and the Democrats have chosen to ignore this issue for 27 months focusing instead on healthcare reform and stimulus packages which have worsened the situation rather than improved it.

Now, as a result of Ryan's courage, our nation is finally being forced to seriously examine the condition it's in and hopefully come to some groundbreaking agreements that will lead us back on a more sustainable.

As much as 72 percent of this country believes we are currently on the wrong track, and the time has come for both Parties to put politics aside and finally do what we are paying them for.

Although Ryan correctly predicted he would be demagogued for tossing the first card onto the table, he couldn't possibly have foreseen the juvenile attack he was going to get from the most powerful man in the world. After the speech, Ryan expressed his regrets both on television and in a written statement:

“When the President reached out to ask us to attend his speech, we were expecting an olive branch. Instead, his speech was excessively partisan, dramatically inaccurate, and hopelessly inadequate to address our fiscal crisis. What we heard today was not fiscal leadership from our commander-in-chief; we heard a political broadside from our campaigner-in-chief.

“Last year, in the absence of a serious budget, the President created a Fiscal Commission. He then ignored its recommendations and omitted any of its major proposals from his budget, and now he wants to delegate leadership to yet another commission to solve a problem he refuses to confront.

“We need leadership, not a doubling down on the politics of the past.  By failing to seriously confront the most predictable economic crisis in our history, this President’s policies are committing our children to a diminished future. We are looking for bipartisan solutions, not partisan rhetoric. When the President is ready to get serious about confronting this challenge, we'll be here.”

Readers are encouraged to review all of Ryan's detailed observations about the errors in the President's speech.

In his inimitable monotone, he thoroughly gutted and filleted President Obaño's class warfare speech.

I weary of this militant Marxist harping on his right to appropriate himself money and votes.

Gary - I was amused by the timing of the speech itself. Odd...

Submitted by acaiguana on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 7:32am.

This so-called major speech on Obama's new budget proposal started at 2:00 pm Eastern on Wednesday.

That is 1:00 pm CST and 12:00 Noon MST.  Now, arguably MST is the most sparsely populated region in America.  Everyone else had either had lunch or was about to go to lunch.

So, my question would be, who was the intended audience for this 'historic' moment in American history?

Was the White House so arrogant that it thought the world would stand still and businesses and men on the street would gather in front of the Board Room TV screens and window TV screens on Main Street to watch, mouths agape in wonder, as he droned on for 20 minutes about the evil Republicans before offering some silly numbers and unintelligible mush as the magic wand solution to the fiscal issues facing us?

My real take on the speech as it tore up my Plasma screen was by the time he got to his 'numbers' the only thing he accomplished was a mass glazing over of the eyes among his audience.

No one was awake by the time he finished his 2 minute number part of the speech and no one paid any attention to the ideas (?) he was promoting after the first five minutes of the speech.

OH well...

What did he say anyway?  Was that our President on TV again?

I thought March Madness was over.

Hey ACA..

Submitted by Gary Hall on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 12:50pm.

Me thinks that the speech was for the national MSM, with the clear understanding that they would carry it for him all day and night long, and on the front page and editorial pages of our country's MSM newspapers.

And indeed they did. Well, I'm sorry.. the LA Times actually buried it on page A10 (Hmm, very unusual); however, the LA Times editorial board led with it - struggling to put a good face on it, but only by trashing the R's and Ryan.

Funny thing is - was that I was driving to get a haircut as it started, and I'm scanning all the AM and FM stations and the only show that had it on, was Rush, who had a bit of fun (disgust) with it for about 5 minutes, and then cut it off - with 40 minutes to go. Are they starting to sense that he's completely lost - a lost cause?

Obama Hubris

Submitted by Lgbpop on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 10:40pm.

He seems to think he'll be pre-empting Limbaugh, but having never worked in radio he doesn't understand network radio and syndication are two different animals. Oddly enough, I heard him on Limbaugh (" 'come into my parlor,' said the spider to the fly") and Limbaugh critiqued him far more objectively than the speech itself was delivered.

I wonder if Vice President Biden was wondering if he'd be sued for plagiarism by falling asleep during the speech - so many others have preceded him!

Well, Gary...

Submitted by Jer on Thu, 04/14/2011 - 9:16am.

Since I have yet to give my obligatory plug for Joe Scarborough this week, I'll note that as I was getting ready to take my son to the bus stop and listening to Morning Joe a little after 6:00 a.m., he was absolutely eviscerating Obama for the speech in general and in particular for sharply criticizing the budget proposals of Paul Ryan who was seated in the front row.

Scarborough suggested the President can only be considered--if memory serves--a "left-wing ideologue out of touch with reality", and Mark Halperin also literally blistered Obama for the tone of the speech.

Hope that makes you feel better.

Oh, I know damn good and well how the far left (10% or less of the population) feels towards Obama on those fringy issues.

Obama simply didn't understand economics, American views, or world issues, when he assumed the office. True, in his heart, he's a very liberal progressive/socialist - he just didn't understand that he couldn't snap his fingers and expect the other 90% to follow along.

Yes, the country is extremely polarized. You read these pages every day - look at where almost all of the public smear mongering and name calling is coming from - without any redress.

Another example. 70+% (Pew Poll) of the public, nationally, supported the specific language of the most contentious sections of the Arizona illegal immigration bill. The Democratic party, the President and his minions, the national MSM, etc., let loose on them, either calling them directly, or inferring, that this super majority of the population is racist, intolerant, hateful, out-of touch, etc. More or less the same on every issue. This divides people. And this is President Obama's talent - dividing people.

Interestingly enough and, in spite of the fact we're supposed to believe the average American is a dolt with no understanding, I heard from some 'average' working class Joe's about the President's< snicker> speech and they were none to pleased with the man. One elderly business owner, in particular, was disgusted by Obama's insinuation that Social Security funds were actually part of the government's budget...uh, isn't that citizens money, you guys have been embezzling?

I've often said that der Schlickmeister was a pathological liar, but Boy Blunder IS a LIE - in his heart, soul, mind, spirit, and his whole pathetic LIFE!!!! So it is NEVER a surprise to me when he starts flapping his purple lips and acting like he has NOTHING to do with the serious problems that are confronting us........and blames anyone and everyone for them. And anymore, I have COMPLETE disdain for ANYONE who STILL supports this phoney - the biggest scam EVER perpetrated on this county in the HISTORY of the USA!!!!

As I noted on another thread - I've been running into hardcore LIBS who are telling me how they are totally shocked and amazed at the 'audacity' of this sanctemonious twerp!!! And what is predictably astonishing about it is that Boy Blunder continues to act as if he is 'above' the huge pile of Kenyan Kow Krap that he is responsible for, and expect people to believe him!!!

This sumb!tch had the nerve to tell people to live within their means AGAIN and then say "the rich can afford to pay a little more."  Just like that time where he says "at some point in your life, you've made enough money" (or thereabouts) and other such nonsense.  I swear, just like I said to abp in a different threat, someone tries to tell me what to do with MY money, I say "UP YOURS" and if they try to make something of it, I will kick their ass.

Argh!  I'd say people need to buy a clue about this usurper, but the price of clues havw gone up because of inflation and the devaluing of the dollar, so they probably can't afford it!
