National Weather Agency Refutes Gore's Claim Recent Snowstorms Caused By Global Warming

By Noel Sheppard | February 21, 2011 | 22:57

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration somewhat under the radar a few weeks ago rebutted Nobel Laureate Al Gore's claim that January's heavy snowstorms across the country were caused by global warming.

As readers might remember, the man that has been made rich advancing the myth that carbon dioxide is destroying the planet weighed in on the inclement weather at his blog on February 1:

Last week on his show Bill O’Reilly asked, “Why has southern New York turned into the tundra?” and then said he had a call into me. I appreciate the question.

As it turns out, the scientific community has been addressing this particular question for some time now and they say that increased heavy snowfalls are completely consistent with what they have been predicting as a consequence of man-made global warming:

“In fact, scientists have been warning for at least two decades that global warming could make snowstorms more severe. Snow has two simple ingredients: cold and moisture. Warmer air collects moisture like a sponge until it hits a patch of cold air. When temperatures dip below freezing, a lot of moisture creates a lot of snow.”

“A rise in global temperature can create all sorts of havoc, ranging from hotter dry spells to colder winters, along with increasingly violent storms, flooding, forest fires and loss of endangered species.”

A week later, NOAA posted the following article at its Climate Watch magazine (h/t Yid With Lid):

This is the second consecutive very wintry winter in the eastern United States. Last year, NOAA climate scientists concluded the record-breaking snowstorms most likely resulted from the combination of two natural climate patterns: El Niño and the Arctic Oscillation.

So what about this year? Last winter’s El Niño has flipped to La Niña, as temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific have been cooler than normal. But the Arctic Oscillation seems to be in a repeat pattern, with conditions this December and January very similar to last winter, according to Deke Arndt, Chief of the Climate Monitoring Branch at NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center.

For those unfamiliar, the National Snow and Ice Data Center defines Arctic Oscillation thusly:

An atmospheric circulation pattern in which the atmospheric pressure over the polar regions varies in opposition with that over middle latitudes (about 45 degrees North) on time scales ranging from weeks to decades. The oscillation extends through the depth of the troposphere. During the months of January through March it extends upward into the stratosphere where it modulates in the strength of the westerly vortex that encircles the Arctic polar cap region. The North Atlantic Oscillation and Arctic Oscillation are different ways of describing the same phenomenon.

So, apart from there being a La Nina this year versus an El Nino, conditions this December and January were "very similar to last winter."

And what did NOAA say about the snowy winter last year (h/t Climate Depot)?

Shortly after the third of three major snowstorms brought record-setting snowfall to the U.S. mid-Atlantic region, NOAA’s Climate Scene Investigators (CSI) assembled to analyze why the snowstorms happened. The CSI is a team of “attribution” experts in NOAA whose job is to determine the causes for climate conditions. By distinguishing natural variability from human-induced climate change, they aim to improve decision-making and inform adaptation strategies.

The CSI team was formed in 2007, following chaotic media coverage of the record U.S. warmth in 2006 (see CSI: NOAA Climate Scene Investigators). Here they have been called to the scene again, but now to explain cold, snowy conditions, and to reconcile those with a warming planet. After a series of record-setting snowstorms hit the mid-Atlantic region this winter, some people asked NOAA if humans could somehow be to blame. Specifically, they wanted to know if human-induced global warming could have caused the snowstorms due to the fact that a warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor.

The CSI Team’s analysis indicates that’s not likely. They found no evidence — no human “fingerprints” — to implicate our involvement in the snowstorms. If global warming was the culprit, the team would have expected to find a gradual increase in heavy snowstorms in the mid-Atlantic region as temperatures rose during the past century. But historical analysis revealed no such increase in snowfall. Nor did the CSI team find any indication of an upward trend in winter precipitation along the eastern seaboard.

The CSI team turned its attention to natural factors that control the ordinary ups and downs of weather. Many extreme weather events are due to cyclical, large-scale anomalies in air pressure and sea surface temperature across large tracts of ocean. Such fluctuations spawn weather systems that can cause droughts, floods, and massive snowstorms. While El Niño is the most famous, scientists have identified other climate anomalies throughout Earth’s climate system as well. Their names may seem unimpressive — the Arctic Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, to name a few — but they can pack quite a punch!

As NOAA in this year's report said "the Arctic Oscillation seems to be in a repeat pattern" from last year, let's focus on the portion of their 2010 study dealing with that:

The North Atlantic Oscillation is a fluctuating air-pressure pattern that alternatively enhances or blocks the storm-steering jet stream over North America. So the NAO is particularly relevant in understanding eastern U.S. wintertime climate variations. The NAO describes the contrast in surface air pressure between Iceland and the Azores as well as the vigor of the jet stream that normally flows between them.

This winter the NAO was in its negative phase and the jet stream flowed further south than usual, pushed toward the Azores by a massive “block” of high surface pressure over Greenland. It’s an unusual atmospheric circulation pattern, but one that has been implicated before. For example, remarkably cold winters persisted over Europe and Russia in the early 1940s, helping to turn the tide of World War II. The NAO, in a blocked phase, was one conspirator in those cold events. Likewise, the CSI Team suspected the pattern was a co-conspirator in the extreme winter weather conditions this year in the mid-Atlantic region. But could they find the evidence they would need to finger El Niño and NAO?

[Editor's note: There is ongoing discussion among scientists as to which of the climate patterns is a more meaningful description of real-world conditions — the Arctic Oscillation or the North Atlantic Oscillation? While these phenomena are measured using different indexes, their values are so highly correlated that some scientists use the terms interchangeably, referring to them together simply as “AO/NAO.” Both AO and NAO were at record lows this winter.]

By January, scientists worldwide were already abuzz about the extremely low values for the NAO index. The NAO, first discovered by British atmospheric scientist Sir Gilbert Walker in the 1920s, has been extensively studied, and its affect on U.S. snowfall is clear: When the NAO index is negative, or “blocked,” snow can pile up along the East Coast. At the atmospheric steering level for storms, high-pressure systems develop over Iceland and Greenland while low pressure builds over the central North Atlantic. This situation redirects the tracks of surface weather systems that are conducive for cold and snow toward the mid-Atlantic coast. Winter precipitation along the eastern seaboard is often in the form of rain, but in a blocked NAO pattern, temperatures can drop low enough to create snow instead.

Historical snowstorms affirm the link. In Baltimore and Washington, D.C., thirteen of the fifteen heaviest snowstorms since 1891 occurred when the NAO index was negative. And case studies of infamous Northeast U.S. storms over the last century, summarized in a Monograph of the American Meteorological Society, have discovered a link to blocked NAO conditions.

The CSI team took its analysis a step further, mapping out historical climate conditions associated with the ten snowiest Decembers, Januaries, and Februaries since 1891. The 30-month composite map of jet stream level and surface conditions revealed a textbook picture of a blocked NAO pattern over the Atlantic Ocean.

Readers are once again reminded that on February 8 of this year, after the nation had experienced crippling snowstorms in the midwest and northeast, NOAA reported "the Arctic Oscillation seems to be in a repeat pattern, with conditions this December and January very similar to last winter.

Hence, and not at all surprisingly, the man that just this past Friday accused Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the Wall Street Journal of being part of a conspiracy to mislead people about the dangers of manmade global warming was once again guilty of it himself.

Why anybody takes this charlatan seriously is beyond me.

Stuff like Thermodynamics thrashed his warmcold snowy world

Submitted by upcountrywater on Mon, 02/21/2011 - 11:25pm.

It's good and it's long..

From a meteorologist’s perspective, nothing is worse than to see atmospheric science trashed by the likes of Al Gore, who is a self proclaimed expert in this area, but has had no formal training from any accredited university and constantly makes incorrect and un-provable assertions about “human caused” climate change.

Gore claimed:

“ These warmer air masses ( which Gore claims result from human carbon emissions that create atmospheric CO2 ) act like a sponge to moisture and soak it up until they hit a patch of cold air.”

Mr. Gore and any other scientists are wrong when they claim warm air masses “soak up moisture like a sponge” as we determined that the differential vapor pressure between the air and a body of water are what determines evaporation, and larger differential vapor pressure is NOT generated in the tropical environment as Gore seems to think. It is actually generated with COLD and very dry continental arctic air overrunning a body of warmer water, such as when arctic air spills out over the ocean or when it runs over the Great Lakes and produces lake effect snow.

You Didn't Build That.

Nice bait and switch...

Submitted by jimspice on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 12:37am.

Nice bait and switch! Here's some observations from this year, and here are some conclusions based on a study last year. If you gave me stock advice based on last year's market because it showed high unemployment just like this year, you would not be my financial advisor for long.

And the fact no "finger prints" were found last year does not necissarily mean human hands were not involved, just that the evidence is not obvious from the observation methods employed. This would be expected when trying to draw conclusions from one storm or one year, as would be evident if you read the links from the articles you site.

You should look at the emerging methods of using distributed computer networks -- using tens of thousands of hours of computer processing resources from volunteers' desktops all over the world when they are otherwise idle (SETI does this too) -- to flush out the associations in extremely complex climate data. A recent study published in Nature by Oxford researcher Richard Allan shows, for the first time, possible direct evidence for a correlation between a single weather event and manmade CO2. The Nature article is behind paywall, but NPR's Talk of the Nation has a nice overview.

And give the Al Gore thing a rest. He doesn't matter to people people who watch these things closely.

1. The article discusses Al Gore because Al Gore said something, and the title of this site is Newsbusters. NB won't be giving Al Gore a rest as long as he commands the attention and raises the money that he does.

2. "The fact that no 'finger prints' were found last year does not necissarily [sic] mean that human hands were not involved..." The fact that NO EVIDENCE WAS FOUND MEANS THAT THERE IS NO LOGICAL BASIS FOR ASSUMING THAT HUMANS WERE INVOLVED. You have no evidence. What is clear is that you do not need evidence for claiming something is true; I leave you to your warped faith.

Jimspice said,

"A recent study published in Nature by Oxford researcher Richard Allan shows, for the first time, possible direct evidence for a correlation between a single weather event and manmade CO2."

For the first time?  Wait a minute, we've been told over and over again for a decade or more that extreme weatehr events due to human produced carbon was massive and irrefuteable.  Now you are citing an article from Nature that says "for the first time"  and also adds the caveat "possible'" for this particular winter storm?

"This would be expected when trying to draw conclusions from one storm or one year"

I was just a at a dinner where some glaobl wamring enthusiasts were citing the recent snow storm, this particular storm, as evidenc eof warming.  A year ago, we had a dry relatively snow free winter, and those folks were citing that as evidence of warming.  Talk about drawing conclusions from one stomr or one year.

NPR is hardly considered 'objective' by any one anymore except those who are left of center.

Not the first itme computer models have been off either.

Sorry jim - I think your argument is pretty weak.

Garbage in, Garbage out

Submitted by Galvanic on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 1:54pm.

Computer models are only as good as (a) the assumptions that are set in them, and (b) the data that is input.  It's been the wrongful assumptions and manipulated data that have brought the global warming industry to a standstill, and made a farce out of the term "peer reviewed science."

The infamous Hockey Stick graphic was gospel until it was proven that the researcher had omitted data from the Little Ice Age.  The IPCC then abandoned it.

The integrity of the data of any study is now called in to question, and rightly so.  The AGW religion is being checked by science.

No Need For Gore and The Other Alarmists

Submitted by Boil It Down on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 1:28am.

If Gore won every battle, the entire human race couldn't make any appreciable reduction of CO2 in the atmosphere to make any noticeable difference. Short of killing off two thirds of humanity, there isn't anything Gore and his cronies can do in the short term. Then who could he rob? Even that wouldn't cost as much a Gore has in mind. The fact is that we have and will continue to put less CO2 in the air for each person. It is being done now without government intervention and regulation or taxing us into oblivion. Al Gore cannot help, but he can certainly do an awful lot of damage. Giant government and giant "green" corporations are only a dangerous answers to an invalid question.

At this point Al Gore is merely a con-artist who has been busted by legitimate science and legitimate journalism.

If Al Gore really believed that the actions of mankind -- even his actions -- had to be reversed immediately to give his children a chance at having a future, he would not be flying all over the world in his jet spewing tons of his dreaded carbon (teleconferencing?) or buying another home (he owns 5?).

Either he doesn't believe his own talk or he doesn't give a rat's pitoot about his children.

..."Don't doubt me."

Well, do not doubt me when I say that the liberal secular progressives (lsp) like Algore are the selfish, racist, bigoted homophobes of our society. They will do whatever they can get away with to achieve their goal of dominating, oppressing and controlling everyone else who does not agree with them and their lsp agenda.

Algore is playing to the highly-impressionable young "skulls full of mush" who as the author of the article cited by NB reader upcountrywater above said have been indoctrinated rather than taught to critically analyze things. These young skulls full of mush simply accept that anthropogenic global warming is real because they are NOT encouraged to question things. (Just look at CNN's Fareed Zakaria's fawning interview of lsp financier George Soros. Link) In doing this, Algore is throwing these young skulls full of mush the "red meat" of AGW is real and Fox News is Faux News.

Climate Change was our Iraq War of lies and fear. Move on.

Submitted by mememine69 on Tue, 02/22/2011 - 8:40pm.

We were wrong. Let’http://environmentalmentalism.blogspot.com/s move on.

Climate Change was for gullible fools and we former believers now clearly see that “crisis”, “catastrophic”, “sever” and “unstoppable warming” were a climate cowards death threat. It was an embarrassing era of environMENTAL environmentalism and I wish I could take back the times I implied to our younger minds that “they“ will die on a dying planet from CO2. If any of you stay behind believers and your faded “worst-case-scenario profiting” scientists had any stones at all, you would call climate change what it was supposed to be, death. Not unpleasant weather. How is a little crisis possible anyways? History is not going to be kind to our Disco Doomsday Science and modern day witch burning and even Obama himself bailed on the “crisis” in his state of the union speech. Add to that, the Republican majority just voted to pull all American IPCC funding and there is wide spread talk now of arrests coming. Failed calls for crisis always back fire and now Obama and the press have a new enemy, those who led us to war against climate variation. A wave of former believer rage has arrived and I dare anyone to say unstoppable warming is absolutely true. It’s no different from any old freak standing by the side of the road holding a sign with THE END IS NEAR, SAVE THE PLANET scribbled on it.
