Ed Schultz: Palin is Racist for Criticizing the Obamas' Connection to Rev. Wright

By Noel Sheppard | November 20, 2010 | 15:34

A  A
Noel Sheppard's picture

After spending much of his week accusing Rush Limbaugh of racism, Ed Schultz on Friday made the same absurd claim about former Alaska governor Sarah Palin.

Following in the footsteps of others on his network as well as the liberal blogosphere, the MSNBCer said it was racist for Palin to refer to comments Michelle Obama made in 2008 about never having been proud of her country before her husband started winning primaries.

It was also racist of Palin to mention in her book the Obamas' connection to Rev. Jeremiah Wright (video follows with transcript and commentary):

ED SCHULTZ, HOST: Welcome back to THE ED SHOW. And the "Battleground" story tonight, Sarah Palin is attacking President Obama and the first lady over race. In her new book "America by Heart," Palin recycles the same shameless, shameful race-baiting she used during the 2008 campaign. She writes, "President Obama seems to believe America, at least America as it currently exists, is a fundamentally unjust and unequal country. Certainly his wife expressed this view when she said during the 2008 campaign that she had never felt proud of her country until her husband started winning elections. In retrospect, I guess this shouldn’t surprise us, since both of them spent almost two decades in the pews of Reverend Jeremiah Wright’s church listening to his rants against America and white people."

Wow. She wants to sell books. Every claim she mentions was debunked and discredited during her failed run with the maverick. Yet, she wraps herself in the flag while pushing the lie president and the first lady are anti-American. There are people in the right wing in this country who had a rabid hatred for our first African-American president to justify it, they’ve convinced themselves, that well it’s not them, it’s him the president. They’re not racist. President Obama’s a racist. They’re not at war with black people. President Obama’s at war with white people. It’s twisted. It’s sad that people actually believe this garbage. But it is absolutely disgusting for any opportunist like Sarah Palin to stroke -- to stoke that kind of hate to inflate her ego, and of course her bank account.
For more let’s bring in Hilary Shelton, the senior vice president for policy and advocacy at the NAACP. Mr. Shelton, good to have you on tonight.

HILARY SHELTON, PRESIDENT, NAACP: Good to be with you.

SCHULTZ: What is your response to what I just read and excerpt from her book?

SHELTON: Well, it’s a sad petty politics of distraction and distortion from someone who couldn’t even complete her term as governor of Alaska would come out trying to, rather than talk about the real problems and challenges of our society, pretend those problems and challenges don’t exist. Because if you don’t have problems and challenges, you don’t have to have answers and solutions. Her book is one that does the kind of things that just cast dispersions on American people, including the first lady of the United States who enjoys a 65 percent approval rating by all of the American people regardless of race, and gender or ethnicity. It’s a sad, petty politics of distraction and distortion.

Nice to bring on an NAACP official for some impartial commentary on whether or not what Palin wrote was racist. What was the likelihood of Shelton not agreeing with Schultz's premise?

Slim to none, right?

More fascinating was how Shelton knows all about a book that hasn't been published yet just by the pages the website Gawker shared with its readers.

Of course, that's not surprising, for liberals are famous for having opinions about conservative books they don't read.

That said, in fairness to Schultz, he did invite on a conservative to offer a contrary view of this situation:

SCHULTZ: With us tonight, Todd Webster democratic strategist and Heidi Harris conservative radio talk show host in Las Vegas. All right, what do you make, Heidi of Sarah Palin going down this road, playing the race card, claiming that the Obama’s were in a pew, you know, claiming that Jeremiah Wright’s not American and is a racist. What do you make of it? What is she going on this road?

HEIDI HARRIS, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: Well they were. They were, Jeremiah Wright’s church for 20 years and they listened to what he said, his anti-American rants, his anti-white people rants. They listened to them. I don’t know if they were in every single time he made the same statements that everybody saw many times on YouTube and things like that. But fact is they sat there in that congregation for all those years. If you don’t agree with it, eventually you leave. Most people leave churches because they disagree with what’s taught from the pulpit. Obama didn’t do that until the pressure was on, he was running for office. I mean, that’s a fact.

SCHULTZ: Todd?

HARRIS: And that’s not the whole focus of Sarah Palings book, I’m sure, I haven’t read it yet but I’m sure that’s not in.

SCHULTZ: Does it seem to you, Heidi, like she’s got a problem with race.

HARRIS: That Sarah Palin has a problem with race?

SCHULTZ: Yes.

HARRIS: No, I don’t think that Sarah Palin is but I think Michelle Obama has got a score to settle. That’s what I see when I see Michelle Obama.

As NewsBusters reported in February 2008, here's what Mrs. Obama said:

And here are some classics from Wright:

Of course, it probably makes me similarly racist for presenting these videos, but we all knew this would be an occupational hazard for conservative writers once Obama was elected.

Sadly, our predictions in this regard did indeed come true.

Can you imagine how great it would be if every politician understood why the U.S. must act as Col. West suggests in regard to radical Islamic militancy?

If politicos can understand that, they can work at it.  If they work at it with diligence, they will increase America's chances of survival against the jihadists.

Political Correctness is manifestly stupid, and stupidity can get you killed; individually, or collectively, as a nation.

It has gotten to the point that Political Correctness and Rectal Cranial Inversion are interchangeable terms.

It boils down to ratings

Submitted by neutron on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 7:12pm.

Since it debuted, MSNBC has been losing viewers and market-share. In a radical attempt to boost ratings, they uncaged Olbie, and got Madcow to froth at the mouth. Sgt Schultzie made the mix more understandable to their less educated viewers, and it worked.

MSNBC attracted the radical liberal fringe viewers of CNN, and by doing so passed them in the ratings. Now, in a desperate bid to keep those viewers, they wave the virtual "red shirt" of racism, to pick at the scabs of the left-wing fringe-osphere, s they will stay tuned. As suche, MSNBC will never have more than 17% of the possible viewers for each time slot, but they will pown those viewers. They must program their mind-numbed robots, yes?

"It is this world, a world where cruise ships throw away more food in a day than most residents of Port-au-Prince see in a year, where white folks' greed runs a world in need..."

I have to wonder if Obama feels like a stupid little petulant bigot for saying that in his book, now that all those greedy Whities gave millions of dollars and months of their lives to save the lives of those earthquake stricken Haitians living in Port-au-Prince.

I totally doubt it though, since in Obama's mind, America and White people are responsible for everything bad in this world.

The race card officially expired

Submitted by KC Mulville on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 4:58pm.

I'm officially off the race card list.

By this, I mean that intellectual cowards like Schultz have used it wrongly, for so long, that the moment race is accused, I now automatically dismiss it. If anyone accuses anyone else of racism, I ignore it. If some official or pundit is black, and I oppose them, it does not logically follow that I opposed them because they're black. Opposing individual black people doesn't mean I oppose blackness. Unfortunately, cowards like Schultz use that argument all the time.

I'm done. I'm tired of it. No more. Any liberal who accuses a conservative (or anyone else for that matter) of being racist is immediately ignored. And, like a personal foul in sports, I immediately dismiss and throw out any other argument they've made, even if it's "2 + 2 = 4."

Racism exists. However, I withdraw the credibility of any pundit who makes a racial accusation against someone of a different political persuasion. Until now, I've been willing to listen to hear if the accusation has any basis. Not anymore. As soon as the accusation is made, I reject everything the accuser says.

From now on, consider a racial accusation to be a shot from a gun where the barrel is curved back on the shooter.

By MARK KENNEDY
AP Drama Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- The audience at Thursday's performance of "Fela!" on Broadway got an extra thrill when an unannounced guest arrived - the first lady.

Michelle Obama and six girlfriends stunned theatergoers when she arrived at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on 49th Street to catch the Tony Award-winning musical about Fela Kuti, the Afrobeat artist and Nigerian political activist.

------------------------------

from Wikipedia:

In 1969, Fela took the band to the United States. While there, Fela discovered the Black Power movement through Sandra Smith (now Izsadore)—a partisan of the Black Panther Party—which would heavily influence his music and political views and renamed the band Nigeria '70.

Submitted by Rush Fan on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 8:44pm.

If Hillary had won (there was little chance that RINO pussy McCain could win), than Mrs. Obama would never ever ever in her entire adult life been proud of her country.  Moreover, if the Obamas had lost, they would have continued to have the Rev. Jeremiah Wright as their beloved and respected pastor.

As a reminder to those who may have forgotten, here is video of a young Barack Obama in an interview in 1995 praising Rev Jeremiah Wright and his African-American church:

"He is a wonderful pastor." [...] "Rev. Wright, my pastor who I speak about in the chapter in my book, represents the best of what the black church has to offer."

No one watches this moron.  No one listens to this moron.  I know it's your job but we have got to stop giving this dick-head free press.  You're preaching to the choir.  We all know he's a moron.  Sensible people know to avoid him, and all the other tripe that babbles on MSNBC.  Yes, I know he just tees it up for you, but we really have to stop.  It's just not good for our mental well being.

The current head of the NAACP

Submitted by Ashrak on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 9:45pm.

The current head of the NAACP has quite the fitting name.

Ben Jealous.

You know, you really can't this stuff up.

Palin scares the dickens out of the just spanked lefties and they will continue to throw everything they can, including the discredited race card, tying to harm her. The "highly educated" elitists often lack the smallest tinge of common sense and this is a good example. The more they think they harm her with their ranting screeds, the more people turn away from their evil ways.

I have yet to decide which possibility appeals to me more  - them being so focused on her thus seeing all their time having been wasted because she doesn't even make a run, or that even with their bile she lights up the American spirit in a 49 state romp like Reagan in spite of it.

Both are quite delicious and it is a tough choice.

For years, I have asked" What can a white person do that a black person can't? Where is this so called special treatment that whitepeople get or this special privilege that white people have? Over and over the answer was "Become President".  Another common answer was "Get rich". Well between Obama and Michael Jordan, neither answer holds water anymore (as if it had any merit for decades anyway).

John Stossel recently put it to the test and I loved how the black people he interacted with rejected special pricing that benefited them because of their skin color. He showed with cookies and snackcakes that black people in this country are far smarter than their so called "leaders" give them credit for.  I truly believe that most black people and most white people want the same thing. EQUALITY.

I would go so far to say that there are more white people arguing for special treatment for black people than black people arguing for special treatment for black people. Many saw and billed Obama as a bridge between the two. And that was the profound error.

The bridge that makes safe travel possible has to be to remove skin color altogether because it doesn't matter. The same rules, the same rights and the same boundaries must apply to all just the same. Just as the NRA fears a government observing the Second Amendment, the NAACP fears a government that observes all rights equally. Both lose their bread and butter when that happens. Neither are either helpful nor are they beneficial because of it.

Ed Schultz is the same thing. He is a bomb thrower with no moral compass, no scruples, no sense of Equality and base substance. He couldn;t debate his way out of a wet paper bag and that is why hus guests are nothing but like minded bomb throwing ideologues who have no more capability to make their case on its merits in a venue of scrutiny than he himself does.  Ed is a lightweight joke and he isn't even as funny as a certain Seargent of the same name.

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Is It "Racist" to Opine About Racism?

Submitted by FreedomFan on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 10:19pm.

Ed Schultz is such a lying douche.  No wonder he has only 3 viewers left.  How can he sit there and deny what everyone in the world knows:

That Obama and his loving family sat there in "Reverend" Jeremiah Wright's "church" of racist America-hatred for two decades?

Apparently it is "racist" to opine about obvious racism.  How convenient for the Obammunists.

I truly believe that most

Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Sat, 11/20/2010 - 10:44pm.

I truly believe that most black people and most white people want the same thing. EQUALITY.

Well depends on what their idea of equality is.  Remember all animals are equal but some are more equal than others.  Try to take away any of the minority/poor special priviges and you hear all sorts of stuff.

Nuke em til they glow; then shoot em in the dark

The Elmer Fudd of Liberal Commentary

Submitted by Chris Norman on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 12:06am.

I find it difficult to get worked up by anything Schultzie says anymore. He's just flails away stupidly like a fish flopping helplessly at the bottom of a fishing boat. The charge of racism in particular, through indiscriminate use, has been rendered useless almost to the point of being a source for humor. No one in conservative politics is bothered by anything he says, so he just redoubles his pathetic efforts as if, one day, he'll "get 'em". He'd be a fairly pathetic figure if he wasn't quite so nasty. Like Elmer Fudd..

Let's make the 2012 campaign: "The War on Error"

Well, the NAACP should know what racism is

Submitted by mzk1 on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 5:14am.

Just like the Klan would. Of course, to identify racism, call in the representative of a racist organization.

But don't ask me if this is a racist administration. Ask the U.S. Civil Rights Commission.

Ed Schultz is a poster child for the walking wounded.

Submitted by Thalpy on Sun, 11/21/2010 - 10:18am.

Ed Schultz's "professional work," much like that of Chris Matthews, is undeserving of serious comment. Ed should be released for supervised visitation only- on Thursdays.
