Chuck Schumer: Ten Million Jobs Saved By Stimulus and TARP

By Noel Sheppard | November 14, 2010 | 18:02

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Sunday claimed the President's stimulus plan combined with 2008's Troubled Assets Relief Program resulted in ten million jobs being saved.

Such was actually said on CBS's "Face the Nation" (video follows with transcript and commentary):

BOB SCHIEFFER, HOST: What would you say to the President about why Democrats did so poorly in this election and how, how do you dig yourself out of this hole?

SENATOR CHUCK SCHUMER (D-N.Y.): Well, here's what I'd say. I'd say, look, the Congress the last two years have been historic. We've passed major pieces of legislation. Four pieces that will go down in history as one of the most significant Congresses we've had. But two of them, the TARP, which was passed by the previous Congress but it gets attributed to us, and the stimulus prevented bad things from happening. There are about ten million people probably who are working now who would not have been had we not passed those laws but they don't know who they are.

The unemployment rate before TARP passed was 6.2 percent with roughly 9.6 million people out of work. When the stimulus bill went through, unemployment was at 7.7 percent with 11.9 million out of a job.

Today, those numbers are 9.6 percent and 14.8 million respectively, yet the man who likely was going to succeed Harry Reid (D-Nev.) as Majority Leader if Sharron Angle had won on Election Day has the nerve to claim stimulus and TARP saved ten million jobs.

That's right, Senator: if stimulus and TARP hadn't been enacted, there would currently be about 25 million people out of work and the unemployment rate would be 16.1 percent.

It's nice being a Democrat and to be able to make unsupportable claims on television without the risk of being called on the carpet.

Someone should have told Schumer to link or slink.

Might as well say it saved

Might as well say it saved 100 million jobs.  Just how many jobs are in the USA, use that figure.  I wonder how many people actually believe this claptrap.

Three Billion

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Sun, 11/14/2010 - 7:48pm.

Obama saved the world from the greatest economic catastrophy of all time where no one would have had a job.  He should take credit, and say he saved or created three billion jobs.

B as in B, S as in S like this spouting from Schumer makes me angry.

But what infuriates me is the fact they don't get called on it!!

Democrats know they can go on these shows and lie.

So they do. No challenges.

Wonder where Chuckie has been. During the whole GZ mosque controversy he was MIA. Hope someone asks him about that soon, but that will probably never happen

Don't blame Schumer

Submitted by American Infidel on Sun, 11/14/2010 - 7:52pm.

He's just doing what democrats do......lie. The problem is where is that oversight that's supposed to be our media? Where is the government watchdog which is the medias job? As 26CX said, the very first question should have been verification of the statement. Next question should have been in what sectors were those jobs saved in? Manufacturing? Production? Government?

the American people know better. And they showed the Dims on 3 November exactly how much they have learned over the past two years.

The only reason Dims didn't lose more Senate seats this election was because only 1/3 were up for re-election. Wait till 2012, Chuck -- you'll see exactly how much weight your outright lies have anymore.

Saved jobs and lost weight.

Submitted by Newsbubba on Sun, 11/14/2010 - 8:39pm.

Chuckie uses the same type of logic that a very fat friend of mine uses when you ask him how much weight he has lost, since he is on a perpetual diet.

At the beginning of the year he weighed around 300.  At the end of the year he weighed around 301.  So I ask, "hey Mikey, so how much weight have you lost this year," and he will say something like "500 pounds!"

Honest answer from his point of view.  He'll lose 15 or 20 lbs one week, and gain 15 or 20 lbs back the next week!  He really did lose lots of weight, but if you don't specifically ask him how much he gained back, he ain't lying!

So Obama and friends like Chuckie can say whatever the hell they like, because the truth is he probably has saved millions of GOVERNMENT jobs just by winning the election, not to mention all of the muslim terrorist jobs around the world that he is creating.  If someone with a grain of brain had won, we may have cut tons of those jobs.

You just have to ask the right question.

Chuckie's answer to the lost

Submitted by motherbelt on Sun, 11/14/2010 - 9:00pm.

Chuckie's answer to the lost weight question would be:

If I didn't go on the diet, I would have weighed 330 by now!  So I "saved"  (or lost, howver you want to look at it) 30 lbs!

and that logic is ever bit as valid as his guess how many more jobs 'would have been' lost if not for the stimulus.
