Bob Schieffer: For Obama 'When it Rains it Just Seems to Pour and Keep on Pouring'
Bob Schieffer concluded Sunday's "Face the Nation" with a weather metaphor-filled comment about today's politics.
With his final observation, the viewer was left with the impression the long-time host feels everything that's happened to President Obama is just bad luck (video follows with transcript and commentary):
BOB SCHIEFFER: Finally today, the people on the sidelines, including me used weather metaphors so often before the election they became a collective cliche. “The winds were blowing the Republican way,” we kept saying. The only question would it be a tropical storm or a hurricane? Well, for sure it was a big blow. And for the Republic-- for the President, I should say, the ill wind just kept on blowing.
His trip to Asia turned out as badly as the election. How long has it been that a President went to a foreign capital to put the finishing touches on a trade agreement, only to come away with nothing? Did no one in the White House staff see that coming? How can that be? And when the President tried to lecture China on their monetary policy, he was politely told to mind his own business. That’s not a great signal to send to the rest of the world.
If that were not bad enough, look at another storm coming when Congress reconvenes this week. Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi is already baulking at any kind of compromise to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. Republicans say without that, all deals are off. So the tax cuts for everyone may expire at year’s end. And that’s just the half of it.
The middle has fallen out of our politics. Democrats elected to next year’s new Congress are more liberal than those in the current Congress, and the Republicans more conservative. So the partisan divide is bound to grow wider. I hate to keep using these weather metaphors, but for this President when it rains it just seems to pour. And keep on pouring.
To be sure, this wasn't how Schieffer likely felt during the campaign of 2008 or even last year when most media members were still caught up in the Hope and Change thing.
But with unemployment stuck around ten percent, a devastating loss in the midterms, and the sense by some in Washington that the current White House resident really is way over his head, the once smitten press are clearly as dazed and confused as the man they hitched their wagons to.
In keeping with Schieffer's theme, Obama was the sunshine of their life. These folks collectively thought his election would bring clear skies from now on.
Unfortunately, their hero and his Party badly misread the winds of change and began implementing policies that received a very cold reception causing businesses to suffer a longer dry-spell than anyone anticipated.
This made the President become a lightning rod for Party criticism which gusted in from all sides culminating in them being totally blown away on Election Day.
Yet, despite all the missteps and miscalculations by the man at the helm as well as his team below deck, Schieffer sees Obama's current condition as an example of into each life some rain must fall.
Makes you wonder how many others in the media are trying to put on a happy face in the hopes that grey skies are gonna clear up in time to save their hero from prematurely entering into his sunset years in 2012.

The press may seem to be slightly hostile to Obama now...
But as Bernie Goldberg always says...wait until the election season gets into full swing...the media will once again be in full drool mode for Obama.

He is the leader they elected and they just don't believe it. They are the ones taking the wide and traveled road.

The convenient idiots will remain in a dream world. Obama could send their own grandmother's off to concentration camps and they'd still defend him. I'm sorry, but they were raised stupid. They are stupid. And they'll die stupid. And they'll happily get thousands of people killed with their own stupidity if it's within their power to do so.
Don't count on their temporary moment of clarity to engage the dormant logic buried deep within. When you think the World fits your reality, and not the other way around- it's over. This is what makes a convenient idiot an idiot. They don't react to reality. Like a mental patient, everything is in their own head. The fact that they are drowning because they never learned to swim is always somebody else's fault. And the result is always the same.

As bad as he thinks it is, he should mention that it's not likely to get any better.
1. He's lost control of the House of Representatives. Not only does his party no longer control the Federal government, but many of the surviving Dem incumbers are now too scared to jump back on his wagon.
2. His WH Finance Team is virutally gone. Three of his top four financial advisors are gone or leaving shortly. The only one remaining is Giethner.
3. Upheaval in the National Security Team. SECDEF Gates departs early 2011. His National Security Advisor and his Director of National Intelligence have recently quit.
4. His Chief of Staff has split. Emanuel left to run for Mayor of Chicago.
Will their replacements collectively better thanhis First Team? Fat chance.
Yet, the economy remains stagnant and weak. His foreign policy is challenged at home and abroad.
If Schieffer were honest, he'd acknowledge that Obama was overhyped in 2008, and hasn't even performed to the level of the President he succeeded.
The "L" in Barack Hussein Obama stands for LEADERSHIP.

That's an interesting list, Gal, because the people on that list who have turned tail and run away were NOT what we would call 'good', or 'sharp', or 'smart', or helpful to OUR cause (with thepossible exception of the national security team) - although I guess that would be asking too much, given the nature of this bunch.

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 11/14/2010 - 10:51pm.
The MSM has been expressing some disappointment in this Administration-Circus, but they've been reluctant to point the finger at the Ringmaster. He has certainly rained on the Democratic Party. In just two years, he's gone from Party Messiah to Pariah.
They keep waiting for the leader they thought they had elected, and they don't want to admit publicly that he is what he is -- there is no leadership.
The MSM is still in denial, but as time goes on, Obama's "It's Bush's fault" mantra will wear thin even with them -- well, at least the older ones.

According to Schieffer, the Republican gains two weeks ago, are bad for the Republic. I don't care that he corrected himself; clearly this was what he was thinking. The quote above is in full context -so there's no way anyone can say that's not what he meant. I wonder if Kopple will call out BS...

Sharp eye and totally accurate. I wish Noel Sheppard would have highlighted it, and discussed it. The bad wind for our Republic is the vile, vicious, utterly corrupt media which is intent on leading this country into a neo-socialist state.
May be, but

You may be correct about the Freudian slip but I think it's more attributable to Schieffer's senility. He had been focusing on "republicans" so I think his train of thought was forming the sentence, "And for the Republicans..." but he caught himself and corrected it to "the President."
As Dennis Miller used to say: "Of course that's just my opinion. I could be wrong."

Schieffer is a socialist tool. Period. Whatever brain power and education he has is totally wasted on his belief in things that are patently untrue. It is disgusting. This man and his ilk have been completely protected from reality. They got away with it because capitalism allows socialists to prosper also. That means the socialists don't have to experience the consequences of their preaching. Now that they've taken over so much control, they're feeling it, because socialism does not work, and once it's installed, things automatically get worse.

Obama's total failure as president must continue. Although I don't think he or his administration capable of succeeding or even appearing to succeed in any endeavor. When you look up failure in the dictionary I want his picture to be there. Without his continuing failure, no matter how it hurts, we will never get rid of him and his socialist cronies. I want him to be the poster boy of progressive failute. In the nick of time we have at least wrested one branch of Govt back but he still has his czars, the senate, maybe the supreme court. and the media. The media especially will be on the Republicans and Tea Party like flies on you know what. The house of reps victory for our side will blunt his attacks but the proof will be if we can severly hamstring or repeal that onerous health bill.
