Zurawik: 'TV Journalism Diminished in Public Mind' Due to MSNBC's Election Coverage
The Baltimore Sun's media critic is still fuming about MSNBC's pathetic coverage on election night.
In his piece published Saturday, David Zurawik called the cable news network a "liberal prep school" while claiming the behavior of folks like Rachel Maddow, Chris Matthews, Lawrence O'Donnell, and Keith Olbermann was "so egregious" that the "entire realm of TV journalism was diminished in the public mind":
It's not high school with cable TV salaries, as one news executive once explained it to me trying to account for the adolescent behavior and attitudes of its hosts. No, it's a weird, little, liberal prep school. It's not very good academically, but it cost lots of money to get in. The editor of the literary magazine is Olbermann, and his protege is Maddow, the poetry editor. And now, the poetry editor is upset because Keith was suspended for breaking one of the school rules.
And she's so upset she's going to demand his immediate reinstatement. But what is she going to do if he is not reinstated? Nothing, because that would involve paying a price, however small, for her convictions. And if she walked off in protest, who would publish her self-absorbed, snarky poems?
Poor MSNBC President Phil Griffin, having to play headmaster to this crew of emotional 15-year-olds.
Oh, and by the way, listen to her faux high rhetoric, "Let this incident lay to rest...." It's like she and O'Donnell think they are writing the Gettysburg Address instead of hosting cable TV shows viewed by minuscule audiences compared to those watching Fox News. Let's call it the rhetoric of false self-importance. Really, in all the seminars I had to take to earn a Ph.D. I never heard one person talk the ridiculous hotdog way O'Donnell and Maddow do on these videos -- and a lot of the folks in those seminar rooms were pretty smart. This isn't about intelligence. It's about posturing on TV.
Indeed. The folks on MSNBC, much like our current president, fashion themselves as being smarter than everyone else in America, and are constantly going out of their way to try to prove it.
In the end, this is likely why their ratings are so low: only people that are similarly taken with themselves likely appreciate the smug arrogance on display.
Unfortunately for them and their network, there just aren't enough pompous, self-absorbed, holier than thou people in the nation that want to spend their time watching other pompous, self-absorbed, holier than thou people.
Most folks like that want the stage for themselves.
The upside is that if MSNBC's hosts and anchors continue to behave this way, they'll all be doing solo acts soon.
Stay tuned.

Olbermann and Maddow just must be journalists. Look, they even wear nerdy glasses for that Clark Kent look.

Me and probably 99.9% of us 'outside the beltway' have or don't care who/what this Zurawik is.. Just because this 'guy' says something that is correct, puts him in the same boat as Kurtz. .WHO CARES? It's been hours now...where's a post from O's '60mins" interview?
I disagree Paul. I'm grateful

I disagree Paul. I'm grateful to Noel for articles like this to show us we aren't alone. Sometimes it's very discouraging to think no one outside of NB sees what I see. Thanks Noel.
Oh, and the 60 minutes interview just ended here on the East Coast.

I, for one, care about what is being said about bias out there - even if I may have never heard of the person involved. I probably haven't heard of half of the news media people reported on here. However, bias is bias, big or small, well known or not. Noel thought this was interesting and this is his gig - if you're not interested in the particular post, post comments on those that do.

I read probably 25 sites a day ...prob more...but, My #1 concern is this voting BS. It's been going on for yrs and yrs and yrs. My #2 concern is the media...the MSM. If WE fix those TWO things, IMHO everything will fix itself. I depend(ed) on NB ALWAYS to keep me updated on what the other side is doing. The media is THE foremost area where WE get 'our' news from. But...., and AGAIN I love NBs....but..,The Blaze comes out with a story, and theres 2 pages of comments even before I see it. same with HA, or even the DC. Here..I don't know what happened?! Everythings been rehashed and rehashed again before it 'appears here. Just sayin....

But, Paul, you can't actually expect that this site be devoted to only what interests you or what you haven't already read somewhere else. It's not surprising that not every post here interests you - I don't read every post here. I read what grabs my attention and/or interest. You also seem to say on the one hand that since you don't know this writer, what he wrote shouldn't be noted here. On the other hand you now say that you have seen these things too many times before seeing them posted here.
Yes Chris...YOU and I have both...

"seen these things too many times before seeing them posted here". I live in St. Augustine FL, Albuqurque NM and Vegas...I could care less what anyone of those 'critics' say in their papers pro or con. Just like I could care less what somebody in the NYT or WaPo says. Whoever reads a 'newspaper' now already 'knows' how the paper 'leans'. Same with MSNBC or FNC. Different strokes for different folks. Just like you and I come here for the 'latest' news. I want to 'read' Noels' and etal, take on things. But I would like to read blogs and most importantly comments from you and others of 'recent' newsworthy events. The first site I go to EVERY morning for the past 4 yrs is HERE. But it's getting old. And you can say...(as others have here) leave then... and you and others are right...I could. But I have higher 'hopes' for here.
I have to disagree also

TV journalism might have been 'dimished' by these dopes, but how many people knew it?? I think PMSNBC caters to the kind of people who probably think the likes of Keef, Leghumper, Madcow, the self-proclaimed socialist, who is even haughtier than the 'mere liberals', and the others are ACTUALLY 'journalists'......................

Actually I watched a little of it.Turned it when Tingles started asking Michelle Bachman if she was hypnontiized and in a trance. She nailed him with the less tingle in his leg remark. The bottom line is those yutts at MSDNC were acting like a bunch of kids.Professionalism isnt in their vocabulary.

Maybe they think glasses make them look intelligent, or, in Olbermann's case, it will prevent people from hitting him.

When my daughter was in 7th grade, she was having trouble in math. She wanted to buy a pair of glasses to make her look and feel smart. So they are at the same maturity level as a 13 year old girl. However, my daughter grew up and matured. These idiots haven't.

Actually, I think ugly glasses are used by:
- Beautiful women who shallowly think that ugly glasses make them look less shallow.
- Liberal women who shallowly think that ugly glasses show that they reject the "shallow" idea of physical beauty.
- Unattractive liberal women (I'm not mentioning any names - Janeane Garafalo) who want to show they embrace their unattractiveness - that and not washing their hair, wearing frumpy clothes, and tatooing themselves all over.
- Keith Olbermann who thinks nerdy glasses show he is an intellectual - and to keep people he ticks off with his pompous comments and taunts from hitting him

It's a perfect time for the come-back of those cats-eye, colored, really hokey looking glasses with the rhinestones and baubles and bangles!!! In fact, I'll start wearing them, just to keep the libs from grabbing the glory!!! As that famous bearded conservative, Billy F. (and you KNOW what the 'F' stands for!!) just for the laughs. There were many, as all of them were sad sacks. MSNBC on election night resembled journalism in the way, say, a Zach Galifianakis resembles an action hero.

Noel, so glad you posted this. I don't read newspapers anymore, and I depend on NB a lot for what's happening in the media. I know you guys and gals will give us all an honest opinion and review of what's happening out there. It's so appreciated. Keep up the good work...
I'm so glad that someone else saw that Gong Show on MSNBC the other night. It was horrendous.
