Maureen Dowd Ridicules GOP Women As 'Mean Girls, Grown-up Versions of Teenage Tormentors'

New York Times readers were greeted Sunday morning by the American Left's new feminism wherein it's not only acceptable to demean conservative women, it's desirable.

The architect of this truly bizarre neo-feminism, Ms. Maureen Dowd, proudly wrote in her October 17 column, "We are in the era of Republican Mean Girls, grown-up versions of those teenage tormentors who would steal your boyfriend, spray-paint your locker and, just for good measure, spread rumors that you were pregnant":

These women — Jan, Meg, Carly, Sharron, Linda, Michele, Queen Bee Sarah and sweet wannabe Christine — have co-opted and ratcheted up the disgust with the status quo that originally buoyed Barack Obama. Whether they’re mistreating the help or belittling the president’s manhood, making snide comments about a rival’s hair or ripping an opponent for spending money on a men’s fashion show, the Mean Girls have replaced Hope with Spite and Cool with Cold. They are the ideal nihilistic cheerleaders for an angry electorate.

For the record, that's Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman, California senatorial candidate Carly Fiorina, Nevada senatorial candidate Sharron Angle, Connecticut senatorial candidate Linda McMahon, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, and Delaware senatorial candidate Christine O'Donnell.

There was a time when America's feminists would have celebrated and cheered such successful women entering politics and standing up to male rivals.

Sadly, we've learned in the past several decades, and received a higher education since Palin was announced as a vice presidential candidate two years ago, that such sentiments only apply to Democrat women.

Any conservative females having the nerve to challenge liberal men are "Mean Girls, grown-up versions of those teenage tormentors who would steal your boyfriend, spray-paint your locker and, just for good measure, spread rumors that you were pregnant."

If you really want to test this double standard, imagine if Jan, Meg, Sharron, Sarah, and Christine were Democrats with the exact same mannerisms, intellects, and styles going up against Republican men named Terry, Jerry, Harry, Dick, Barack, and Chris.

Would Dowd be calling them mean girls two weeks before Election Day or reveling in their feminist spunk and gumption?

Yes, that was a rhetorical question.

*****Update: Former Bush press secretary Dana Perino responds, "Two can play at that game, sister."

So does Commentary's Jennifer Rubin.

Mark Levin commented via email:

Maureen Dowd is as bankrupt as the media company for which she writes. If I weren't a gentleman I'd call her what Jerry Brown's wife called Meg Whitman.

So did Laura Ingraham:

Maureen wouldn't know real America even if it ever decided to make her relevant. Fortunately for her, that's not looking likely.

Mean Women?????

Submitted by Bourbeau on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 9:43am.

Damn Maureen, do you own a mirror?  How about having a group therapy session with Whoppy Goldber, Joy Beyhar, Rachel Maddow, Shiela Lee of Texas, and the entire California Congressional delegation.  Amazing that any newspaper would accept this kind of verbal stupidity and not challenge it's credence.

Well, it's Mo's column, and

Submitted by motherbelt on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 10:33am.

Well, it's Mo's column, and she's allowed to say what she wants....newspapers don't "vet" their opinion writers, and they certainly don't fact-check them.

But for her to call Republican women "mean" when it's her liberal/feminist biddies...I mean buddies....standing up for someone who called Meg Whitman a whore, well, her double-standard slip is showing.

Christine O'Donnell?  What the H has she said that is mean?

As for the other women, none of them has said anything that, coming from a man, would be considered anything but tough and direct.

And that's the other double standard run up the flagpole by Dowd.  She claims, as a feminist, to want women to be allowed to be as tough  as men.  But when that toughness runs athwart her liberal ideology, she suddenly thinks it's unbecoming that the women aren't being "nice."

LOL, mb....."biddies"

Submitted by Blonde on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 10:53am.

Or, as I used to call my step-mom..."harpy".

I find it deliciously ironic that the single and long-in-the-tooth Dowd is throwing the "steal the boyfriend" barb at two women who have been married to their husbands long enough to have adult children (oddly Bachman and Palin each have five kids).  What makes it even funnier is tossing this mean girl "insult" O'Donnell's way....a woman who is so much younger and more attractive than Dowd just really makes it hilarious.

What we have here, and I think Doc Sam might back up my amateur psychology, is an old and decrepit and no-long successful Mo-Do, a former "in" chick and mean girl herself, is projecting her (former) self-image on these three.  After all, she's the "mean girl"....the one who name calls for a living in her pathetic little column.

You're spot-on about the double standard, too.  It used to be that it was just easier to ignore the liberal idiocy than to take it on, directly.  No longer.  Palin, Bachman, and now O'Donnell have put up with the most loathesome personal attacks, only to cooly and calmy deflect them.  (Can you imagine MoDo under that sort of withering attack....she'd melt like the Wicked Witch of New York).

And a final little clue for MoDo.  Her jealousy for these women is apparent, and the more she goes after them, the more she loses.  It's a vicious circle for MoDo...one which she can't win.  Love that.  It's the best kind of comedy...unintentional.

mean = inflexible to libs

Submitted by jon_torlin on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 11:07am.

I think Dowd probably attributes "mean" to conservatives who follow the rules and laws versus the libs who act like rules are meant to be flexible(as in not followed and just plain broken).  I mean, Horrors!  Why wouldn't those mean conservative women let their kids do whatever they want?(one example)

I know some women at work that are liberal like Dowd.  They are some of the most unhappy people I've seen.   They are spiteful, nasty, oh yeah and mean too.  I stay the hell away from them as much as possible.

What Mo has forgotten is that we are not children anymore. Look at the common factors among the leading conservative women in politics today. They are hard working ,  believe in individual responsibiity, religious,  stong and independant, and even have a sense of humor. Interesting, these same characteristics and beliefs can be found among conservative women throughout the country and at NB as well.( Deliberately not mentioning physical attributes) :-)

MsDowd is totally unable to recognize these commonalities in conservative women because she has never applied any of these values into her own life.

She also can't recognize them because no doubt, she surrounds herself with those of her own ilk....the whining, self-important parrots like Whoopsi and Joyless.

MoDo would probably have a heart attack in a three way conversation with thee and me.  We'd scare her to death.  We're "mean girls" because we don't buy the liberal pap.

The other thing that totally drives MoDo insane is that most men can't stand the needy liberal types.  And us conservative ladies get along alot better with these men, in fact, they like to hang with us.  They respect us.  And this is true in a business environment, too.  It must drive MoDo batty.  Hee hee.

By the way, Mo, there wasn't any disgust with the status quo before. That was all manufactured by Obama's campaign with very effective help from most of the biased media.

Repressed anger Maureen?

Submitted by sam12663 on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 10:13am.

You think Dowd has ever had her boyfreind 'stolen' from her?

Another example of a liberal being out of touch with the majority of America. The women Dowd is demeaning here; agree with them ideologically or not; should all be admired for their individual accomplishments. Unfortunately, liberals like Dowd cannot see past ideology.

For all of their tough talk and rhetoric; and all of their talk about being strong, independent people being able to stand on their own two feet; liberal women really are nothing more than needy, petulent, whiney, gutless, shameless, blameless, self righteous haters that are actually jealous of conservative women because they see in them what they claim to be.

Why are liberals miserable and angry all the time? They have had all the power for the past 2 years and yet they are never happy. What kind of existence is it if having everything you want is never enough?

Liberals lie, it's what they do.

Dowd's Mid-Life Crisis

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 12:29pm.

I've believed for years that Maureen Dowd is suffering from a feminist mid-life crisis, and her book reflects this.

Dowd is highly successful in her chosen profession.  She has fame, recognition, and considerable wealth.  Dowd is a model feminist.

But she can't understand why she doesn't have a husband (I'm not making that up; it's the gist of her book).

Now, she sees women like Palin who have families as well success.  And perhaps more importantly, they're happy, and Dowd is not.

So she's resents them.  Her feminist dogma relegates conservative women to the status of ignorant, unfulfilled sex slaves, and so she bristles at the fact that they are happy and successful in many ways.

Palin is having a visible impact on American politics.  Dowd has absolutely none.

As long as conservative women are smiling and winning, Dowd will attack them personally.

But at this point, Dowd is howling at the moon.

Dowd

Submitted by trajan2448 on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 10:21am.

Dowd is an utterly predictable, snarky, condescending, not overly bright, liberal snob. She never lets the facts interfere with her delusions of moral superiority. Her usual bile spewing reveals an amazingly stubborn sophomoric view more commonly associated with the mental sloth of teenage brats, who feel entitled to everything without any effort on their part.

Considering she was talking about the Angle - Reid debate where Angle just demolished Reid , I thought it was not a bad column for Dowd. I absolutely loved seeing Angle ask Reid where he got all his money from since he has been a government employee. I wish the rest of the GOP would take off the gloves like Angle did and shove the Dem record down the throats of these  candidates.

These women have been savaged. The attacks on Palin's child was one of the lowest things I have ever seen. I love that they cannot shut her up. Dowd is whinning about her weak candidates and their inability to stop these women. The more they attack "our women" , the more I like them and know they are the right candidates. I wish O'Donnell would spend her time attacking the Dem record since they took control of Congress in the election of Nov '06 rather than wasting time saying the obvious, that she is not a witch etc. GET MEANER , GIRLS and you guys too!

I have been getting angrier and angrier with the RNC with every passing week.  Tea Party candidates like Angle, O'Donnell, Rubio and Miller in Alaska are getting the shaft.  The RINO's they defeated are sitting on the sidelines badmouthing them or running as third party candidates.  They should have been brought to heel by the RNC long ago.  They had better be sent packing, no support, no lobbying gigs, no nothing or the RNC will never get another penny from me.

The contempt by the ESTABLISHMENT is really making me angry since without the Teaparty they would still be wandering lost in the wilderness like they were just after Obama entered the WH.  They keep this up and they risk the TeaParty setting up shop and leaving them in the dust for a long time to come.  I for one wouldn't want that to happen but I wouldn't blame them one darn bit at this point.

The GOP has yet to reconcile with the change

Submitted by Galvanic on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 10:18am.

I'm neither a Democrat nor a Republican, so without a dog in the fight, I'm not going to tell either one where they should spend their money. But I obviously have my own ideas on what's worthwhile and what's not.

The GOP has yet to come to grips with the rising Tea Party 'insurgency.'  For the time being, they are mostly riding the wave into this election, and they should do well.

But the GOP elite doesn't want Palin on the ticket in 2012, and unless they change the way they select candidates -- in other words, returning to a true national party convention and abolishing primaries and caucuses -- Palin may very well be the candidate they get.

In '94, that process delivered Dole as the candidate to run against a very vulnerable Clinton, and Dole was the candidate Clinton himself would've picked to run against him.

This is where the schism lies between the GOP elite (i.e. Rove, McConnell, Boehner) and the grass roots.   It has to decide what kind of a party it will be.  Until they reconcile this, the GOP will be somewhat schizophrenic and Dems like Obama will stand a good chance of getting re-elected.

If there's one thing Dowd at least has the credibility to speak on, it's mean, bitchy, catty, pea-brained girls.  However, as one who was able to suspend blood from pouring out of his eyes as he was reading the article, I have to say the second half was pointless and a letdown.  She built up this great beginning with her Vietnam Style flashbacks of picking on poor, ugly, stupid kids in high school and then she actually had to talk about the current political climate.  And that, never having been easy for her, proved to be her Achilles Heel once again.

All of the women listed by MoDo oppose abortions except Whitman.

The rise of a whole cadre of successful, ambitious, prominent conservative women accounts for nothing because they oppose abortion.

Conservative women are condemned for the same reason that conservative nominees to the Supreme Court are condemned: their stands on or views of abortion.

NOW, and its factotums like MoDo, focus on only one issue, abortion. There are no other issues before them.

Condoleezza Rice: Brown sugar house niggah and sell-out ... and, oh yes, not a real woman because she's not a mother (according to Senator Ma'am)

Alberto Gonzalez: Faux brownie unworthy of the federal appeals court, because he is conservative (see, anti-abortion) and had a good chance to become the first person of hispanic background appointed to the SCOTUS (by a Republican >gasp<).

Teddy Chappaquiddick: Sainted sea lion of the Senate for championing abortion rights, maker of waitress sandwiches, drunk and all-around roue, and holder of the Red Cross Senior Life-saving certificate ... NOT!

Maureen called Christine "sweet." So I guess you can be "mean" and sweet at the same time? Okay.

She also called called Christine a "wannabe." Isn't that a put-down? And aren't put-downs MEAN?

Amazing.

. Dowd probably thought tht this comparison would be oh, so clever and just went ahead and wrote it  -no matter that it doesn't really fit together. It's the reason why so much liberal satire of conservatives isn't funny - because most people don't recognize any grain of truth in it.

I find it to be unintentionally hilarious.  Kind of like that bad, serious movie that is sooooo bad, you laugh.  And then laugh harder.

Her logic is stretched so thin one can see right through it.  Not a good thing for a "serious" columnist.

Maureen Dowdy..............

Submitted by Tomorama on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 11:59am.

All of these women she belittles DID NOT get where they are at by their husbands name (Hillarity), also their skin hue and husband (Meechelle) or by their Daddy's name (Mika).

In the 70's strong women WERE the focus of NOW, but they have been exposed for the far, far left slant they have taken.

Self made, attractive, smart and successful and shit, POPULAR.

I look under the definition of mean and I can't find any of those same attributes.

For the record, I respect the hell out of Oprah because SHE BUILT the empire and her politics may be diferent than mine, BUT SHE EARNED MY RESPECT.

That is what sets us apart from these baby killin' losers errr MEAN GIRLS.

Dana Perino is am awesome voice for the party and I am a huge fan, and she happens to be cute as hell also....

Dana nails it.  MoDo is not worth the effort...she's worthy only of disdain and scorn for her little temper tantrums.

As I said earlier, unintentional comedy.

This is just more dumocrat desperation.  Don't waste your time on this lame misdirection of our attentions.  It's the pick pocket's trickery.

Keep the focus on the prize.  Get these thieves out of our lives and government.

When they cannot win on issues, out comes the mud slinging.  The rats are sqeaking and the pigs squealing.

They want you to focus on the irrelevant so they can pick your pockets.

Much more important, don't let them steal another election.  I'm sure SEIU and ACORN ar stuffing trunks full of write in ballets from dead people, illegal aliens and Disney characters.  That is where our attention needs to be.

Dowd is insane. The libs have

Submitted by eaglewingz08 on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 1:41pm.

Dowd is insane. The libs have been vicious towards republican conservative women for the past fifty years or more. I remember the vituperation against Phyllis Schlafly, which was unremitting. In those days there was no conservative blogosphere to counter the daily accusations and invective heaped by the liberals. Now there is, and libs don't like the diversity in information providers one bit.

So, to sum up, libs didn't like it one bit when Carly made a style comment about Boxer's hair, and played it 24/7 for weeks. But Brown makes a nasty and bullying comment about Meg Whitman, and the libmedia buries it, explains it away, minimizes it, and Dowd doesn't even mention it, while she sides with the real liberal bullies who try to keep all women on the democrap plantation with their verbal whips and chains.

And that irony is slamming all the Feminists

Submitted by Galvanic on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 4:37pm.

New Mexico will likely seat the first female Hispanic-American governor in the US.

South Carolina will likely seat the first female Indian-American governor in the US.

An up-and-coming female rancher-mom is ahead of an incumbent Representative in South Dakota's only House seat.

A female former school teacher is in a tight race with the old white man who happens to be the Senate's Majority Leader.

Female former CEO's are contesting old-fashioned liberals in California for a Senate seat and the governorship.

The female former govnernor of Alaska has become a major political force.

Normally, the Feminists might be celebrating these women as signs of progress in their cause for equality.

But they don't, because all those strong women are Republicans.

The image of an old white male dominated GOP goes out the window.

And Dowd is now depressed.

Over the ill Maureen screeches from her liberal perch

Submitted by sms5217 on Sun, 10/17/2010 - 8:26pm.

It just amazes me that liberal varmints like Odowd think of themselves as "intellectuals".

Who in their right mind would consider losers who have JUST a bachelor's degrees in useless fields like human studies, black studies, communications, sociology, and gender studies to be intellectuals?

These jokers go to Wellesley, get a communications degree, then get to perch on top of the NY times flagpole for the next 30 years squawking about they are so "modern" and "chic" and "intellectual" and "so smart".

My rear end!

No, Maureen, you and your ilk are NOT intellectuals.  You are nothing more than arrogant, overrated gasbags who add nothing to America, contribute nothing but your global warming with your hot air, and invent nothing but the empty pretenses inside your little socialist heads.

Come talk to me, someone who works hard, plays by the rules, earned hard science degrees at college, a doctorate, and worked my way thru not one, not two, but three surgical residencies. Talk to the guy who became a chemical or electrical engineer.  Talk to anyone...except the closeted, arrogant, cheeseheads of the MSM.

Funny how all the "mean girls" just happen to be of the Republican persuasion.  Ya know, if there was even some semblance of balance here such that other "mean girls" who paint lockers and spread rumors who were not Republican were included in Dowdy's latest bitter rant you might consider her "point"?  But no....just more of the predictable "everyone who doesn't think like me is every bad name I can conjure up"  bullshit.  And it's this kind of crappy ink that gets poured on thicker and blacker than ever on the run up to Nov.  It's print desperation that will do absolutely nothing to change the outcome....that outcome being the astounding repudiation of the ideas and attitudes of the likes of Obama and Dowd.  I thought this woman was suppose to be intelligent?  After all she writes for the NY Times.  Doesn't that make her smart?  Doesn't it?

Mean Girls

Submitted by smoses on Wed, 10/20/2010 - 9:01am.

I have been watching and listening to NOW for a long time and after seeing all the political garbage that is generating from them I have decided I do not want to be a part of such a farce any longer. A lot of members are saying the same. They have gone too far. With the upcoming withdrawal of membership to this sorry excuse of a women's group, the ex members are considering moving towards the Republican side, at least there the foul mouth lying is not as rampant and women are still respectful towards each other and towards men, which is as it should be if true equality is to work. Goodbye for NOW...
