On Sunday, ABC's George Will uttered an inconvenient truth about Barack Obama that his adoring media have been ignoring since he first threw his hat into the presidential ring in February 2007: his rhetoric is filled with constant references to himself.
To prove the point on the most recent installment of "This Week," Will counted the number of times Mr. and Mrs. Obama used the words "I" and "me" during their speeches in Copenhagen Friday.
The numbers are shocking making it likely in Will's view that the word "vain" is going to eventually attach itself to Obama (video embedded below the fold with transcript):
What's alarming is whether it indicates a belief on the part of the President which is that there is no problem that will not melt before the sunshine of his charm. And this is evidence again that it's not so. The President and First Lady went to Copenhagen and gave little speeches about themselves. She, Mrs. Obama, used the first-person singular pronoun in some form or another, "I" or "me", sixteen, 34 times in sixteen paragraphs. He used it 23 times in thirteen paragraphs. It was all about them, and the danger is an adjective sooner or later attaches to presidents. Honest Abe, Tricky Dick Nixon. All kinds of adjectives. The danger to the President is that Vain is going to attach to him.
Precisely.
The only question is when will other Obama-loving media members begin to realize this?
This seems especially important given the press's complicity in helping Obama create his Cult of Personality.
*****Update: The Business & Media Institute's Dan Gainor wrote about Obama's self-infatuation weeks ago --
Instead of adoring his own image, Obama loves to hear himself talk - about himself. In just 41 speeches this year, Obama has talked about himself nearly 1,200 times - 1,198 to be exact. (That breaks down to 1,121 "I"s and just 77 "me"s.) And that just includes 34 weekly addresses and his seven major speeches. Count the hundreds of other public speeches and he'd be off the charts. [...]
The best we can hope is that one day journalists will wise up and see Obama eye to I.
Hear, hear!!!

And To Think.....
October 5, 2009 - 06:13 ET by GeneralAlAnd to think the MSM got all bent out of shape with W's mispronounciation of a few words! I'll take the cowboy to ACORN man any day!
Even ABC can stumble into something correct....
October 4, 2009 - 11:31 ET by SlyrrIt just goes to show, when reporters actually chip themselves free from the crusts that freeze them into their cushy little chairs behind their desks, and actually go out and do some RESEARCH, they can actually get something right.
Even ABC can get something right when they stumble out of their offices, pop their bubbles and actually do their dang jobs.
Imagine what the world and this nation would come to realize about Obama if ALL reporters woke up from their spell of partisan denial and actually went out to do some reporting? It's no surprise, nor secret that Obama is a vainglorious dolt. Every speech he gives, it's 'me, me me,' and 'I, I, I,'. He's actually lecturing the people about health care saying we should buy into HIS plan because HE wants it and HE thinks HE knows better.
Rush uttered a profound truth, one which Obama should probably listen to because it concerns him greatly. 'If the media made you - it can also DESTROY you.'
And really - what did Obama have going for him in the election and the subsequent months besides a media that was totally in the tank and covering his sorry backside? And see how vulnerable and pathetic he looks when his media slaves and cheerleaders actually start pointing out his flaws?
Joe the Plumber - Sarah Palin, and others - the moment they looked as if they were a threat to 'The One', the media leaped into action, sliming them, insulting them, mocking them, playing dirty trick after dirty trick to try and embarrass, humiliate and intimidate anyone who dared to make 'The One' look bad. Pathetic figureheads like Chris Matthews declared it was their 'job to make Obama look good'.
But with record unemployment, defecits out of control, a failed stimulus bill, failed GM takeover, failed Olympic bid, with his weakness on Afghanistan on full display, and our enemies across the globe mocking Obama and ignoring 'his' demands, even Obama's media slaves can't prop him up much longer.
But they have to try - they sold themselves to him and made him too big to fail, so they're desperately trying to spin his failure and bill them as victories. 'Obama needs a victory', said one reporter after Obama came back from Copenhagen in defeat.
What will the media do to try and bring it to pass? Keep your eyes on them folks....

October 4, 2009 - 11:54 ET by GalvanicOne prominent characteristic of contemporary super-celebrities is the extreme degree to which it is "all about them." Some are more obvious about it than others, but George Will highlights an excellent point about Obama: it's all about him.
Certainly, his charm has won him three major elections without a loss, and delivered him to the White House. But the trap here is that in achieving the ultimate political prize, he has never had to make any real accomplishments in the offices he has held up to now. In fact, in his two previous offices -- Illinois Senator and US Senator from Illinois -- he was very quickly back on the campaign trail for the next election before he could prove his worth as a legislator. That's one reason he can neither steer his Congressional leaders toward resolution nor rally the support of the fence-sitters in his own party; he's never really worked in their little fiefdom, so he doesn't know what makes it operate.
Now there is no higher office to campaign for, and the public expects leadership and results -- That's asking a tall order from a man who has never displayed either. Having failed to ram health care reform through on mere charm and hubris, he has no alternative strategy to employ. And critics from across the political spectrum are losing confidence and (trumpets please . . .) HOPE.
Since he measures his success with his standing in polls, it must be a shock to him to see his numbers plummet on the very issue he wanted to deliver. The more visible he is on the issue, the more public support for it drops.
But he still doesn't get it. And just as a Hollywood actor or rock star dumps his/her agent when the contract offers trickle off, watch for BHO to dump some advisers in order to re-energize his Presidency; it will be billed as a "new strategic direction initiative." Yet it will merely be Emperor Barack I still failing to acknowledge that he has no clothes.

Many in the NB community make better arguments and analogies than those in the media.

October 4, 2009 - 12:46 ET by GalvanicBlonde: "And I'm sure your prediction of the imminent advisor-dump is spot-on as well. Glib Gibbsy would be my first choice, but I would imagine Vain Obama sees nothing wrong with his shallow Press Secretary. We should start a pool."
I totally agree with you there, Blonde. And glib is the perfect adjective for Gibbs. In the early days of this Administration, the press corps giggled along with Gibbs' evasions, but now they realize that Gibbs doesn't work with the press corps; he merely toys with them while offering nothing of substance.
If it hasn't begun already, I suspect that editors and publishers will warn Rahm Emanuel and his client BHO that unless Gibbs is removed, the media will not be able to support the White House like it has before.
And Glibby Gibby will be shown the door.
At this point, lacking the political instincts of a Bill Clinton (I hate the schmuck, but political struggle had taught him how to survive), the inexperienced Obama appears to have spent all of his charm ammo and is now totally reliant on the Beltway Dems to advise him on what to do. If he wants to stop the downward spiral, he needs to stop listening to the radical Jarrett and start listening to folks in the Democratic "Old Guard."
Of course, when he does embrace the "old Washington", he will further alienate those on his Fat Left and even some independents who believed him when he promised to change the way business is done in Washington.
But don't rule out sudden crises domestic and foreign to change things. We should never forget Emanuel's quote about taking advantage of crises to push through agendas. It's sad to say, but what Obama's image needs right now is a natural disaster where he can show up with shirt-sleeves rolled up, spew his classic rhetoric, and pour more money into the affected area. The media will naively embrace him once more as they essentially celebrate the return of the wonderful guy they fell in love two years ago.
And the marriage will thrive until the media once again realizes that nothing has fundamentally changed.
You're most welcome
October 4, 2009 - 13:24 ET by BlondeYour reply brings to mind something that I picked up on the Gator boards after Tebow's concussion (I guess I'm jonesing).
Why waste a good panic?
Now we know why Vain Obama surrounded himself with Clintonista retreads. They'll suck up to anyone and as long as they hold the mirror for The One, they may be able to stay. They remind me of that Star Trek episode that had "the chorus" to interpret a leader's thoughts. But when they cease being useful in this role, they'll be out the door.
However, knowing how loyal Hillary is to her own self-interests, I think she'll use Afghanistan (anyone who thinks Obama is going to give McChrystal the additional troops he's requested is delusional) to resign. Biden is already telegraphing Obama's next move (what an idiot, but we're talking Biden).
So between the rats bailing and Obama trying something/anything, we may see the members of Obama's administration dropping faster than his poll numbers.
I hope he fails, too.

October 4, 2009 - 19:39 ET by GalvanicObama is relatively new on the Democratic political scene, and while he carries clout as POTUS, it's a guess as to how many in his inner circle are genuinely loyal to him. He's got plenty of grassroots support (e,g, ACORN, SEIU, etc.), but of the high level Dems in the Administration, most owe Obama nothing.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Hillary Clinton, Sibelius, and Jim Jones leave in the next year or so. Secretary of Defense Gates will beat them out.

October 4, 2009 - 14:27 ET by KC MulvilleI still say that Rahm Emmanuel only has to the end of the year. Think of this - Emmanuel came onto the Obama Team after the election. His tactics have produced failure after failure. This last debacle, even though it was about a relatively unimportant issue, is just one more straw closer to breaking the camel's back.
I'm sure that some of the campaign veterans are saying privately, you know, before Rahm came aboard, we were a pretty efficient machine. Now, we're just bumbling constantly. We'd be better off with Axelrod as the chief of staff, like it was during the campaign.
Emmanuel: just a few months to go. Count on it.
I don't know how this works
October 4, 2009 - 12:15 ET by BKeyserI don't know how this works but my guess is the president doesn't have a whole lot of time to pen speeches. I would assume he pre-reads them, and maybe alters them or comments on them, but rarely writes them in total. If anyone knows otherwise, please correct me.
But, if my premise is correct, then I think it goes to the liberal mindset, at least that of the inner circle of Barack Obama. I think they have no critical thinking ability. They see only through their own rose-colored lenses, and anything outside of their very limited periferal vision is not only unseen, but disregarded as "beneath them" if it's ever brought to their attention.
This would also explain their hero-worship and their self-installed "mandate" for "change." I think they were truly shocked at the IOC vote, and I think they're still looking at each other as if to say, "But Barack went there. He flew all the way to Copenhagen. October 4, 2009 - 12:28 ET by DingbatI have written speeches for some senior govt folks but certainly not this level. But the process, I'm sure, is the same. When you do it, you write what you think the Principal wants to say and in the tone and style that the Principal uses. You pretend you are the Principal and you write that way. If you don't, you won't write any more speeches for him/her.
So, Dear Leader's speech writers are doing exactly what he expects. To fire them would to be putting himself under the bus. Now, he could say that he got bad advice from Twinkle Toes Rahm and fire him...

October 4, 2009 - 13:20 ET by doug1950I used earlier discussing some of the huge missteps this Admin has made. I said to my wife there was a total lack of "critical thinking". Case in point is Obama giving the Russians a defense missle free zone in Poland and the other nations who have stuck by America. This was a massive blunder on his part. Just like Jimmy Carter, Obama believes he can win friends by appeasement and gestures of friendship when all they see is weakness and uncertainty on his part. They think he is a bumbling fool, easily maniipulated and a man lacking the finer elements of leadership and an understanding of world politics. In other words, they have him pegged.

The mistakes that Obama has made are his own. Bush was sitting around the house in Texas when he made those mistakes. What mess that was not already there -- or worse -- did they create/foster/influence, post-January 2001 ??
Shy...a further response:
October 5, 2009 - 22:55 ET by JerThe assertions were made because I believe them to be true. However, I made it clear in a subsequent post that the Bush administration likewise inherited significant problems from the previous (Clinton) administration; so, you are wrong to conclude that my intent was to hold Bush soley and completely responsible for their creation.
North Korea is a prime example. Clinton attempted to thwart its nuclear weaponizing program with very mixed results, and the ongoing "crisis" was thus inherited by the Bush administration. Unfortunately, the latter did precious little in containing NK's efforts and consequently an extraordinarily dangerous "can" has been kicked down the road landing right at Obama's doorstep.

Jer - On Pakistan
October 6, 2009 - 00:36 ET by Captain KirockGetting back to your original post, I would submit that the situation with Pakistan has vastly improved over the last 10 years from the United States' pint of view.
Prior to 911, Pakistan was openly beligerent to US policy. More ominously, Pakistan and India were sniping at each other over Kashmir, which created fears of a potential nuclear war. After 911, Pakistan was bribed to join the US in its war vs. the Taliban and AQ in Afghanistan. Although far from an ideal situation, I would rather have Pakistan helping versus the Taliban than threatening war with India, which is where we were 10 years ago.
Captain Kirock...
October 6, 2009 - 02:11 ET by JerAlthough the intensity of anti-US sentiment in Pakistan prior to 9/11 is debatable--after all, over most of the past half century we have tilted [slightly to moderately] in favor of Pakistan versus India out of strategic and geopolitical concerns--the Bush administration does deserve high marks for its diplomatic adroitness in a.) convincing Musharref as far as practicable from his standpoint to align with US interests and intervene directly within the geographic cradle of Islamic fundamentalist/Al Qaeda/Taliban terrorism, while b.) somehow keeping a lid on the long-simmering and potentially explosive Kashmir powder keg. As you know, we are dealing with a couple of nuclear powers. We're not talking Honduras and El Salvador here.
My problem with the past administration in this region goes more to the larger issue of allocating sufficient resources--including but not limited to military assets--to finish off the Taliban and Al Qaeda by finishing the job in Afghanistan. The failure to do so has been steadily coming back to haunt us over the past couple of years and has now reached critical mass.
Anyway, just my opinion, for what it's worth.

Actually, Obama's using the US presidency as a springboard for the UN presidency, a position that requires nether true leadership NOR actual results and it is believed to be the highest office attainable to any bureaucrat these days. After all, the UN is a global bureaucracy, is it not? How could Obama, a true bureaucrat, not want to lead the UN? That;s why he ran for president at such a relatively young age. We can only hope that three years from now American voters come to their senses and rid the Oval Office of this blue-nosed black aristocracy whose mission it is to put all of us in our place and to make sure we know our place. Mr. Will has told us nothing new. As proof, when was the last time you heard of Obama in Kansas, Alabama, Texas, or Georgia. Those of the states of the commoners to Barry O and doesn't want to lower himself by being seen there. I wouldn't walk across the street to pee on his shoes.

October 4, 2009 - 13:40 ET by general companyI was shocked. That being said, Obama does look down on all of us, thinking we have been going about building the most charitable and prosperous nation ever all the wrong ways?
But I knew the press would stand by him, they made him. Also your right, Will is many a day late, the Obama train is off the tracks, but dont think that will dicourage the libs. I fear for our men and woman in uniform, because Obama doesnt seem to have much intrest in them at all, you can throw in those same sorry libs in the media as well.

October 4, 2009 - 16:38 ET by woburn828Kat outta the bag,
I read over the weekend that the reason you don't see many cars with Obama stickers is that they all went to the Cash for Clunkers program. I did not make that up but I found it funny.
LOL that is funny.
October 4, 2009 - 16:53 ET by kangarooLOL that is funny. Remember when they said a few months ago that they are watching you if you have a ron paul sticker on your car you are a domestic terroist. October 4, 2009 - 13:20 ET by nadadhimmiRino's like Will, Noonan, McCain, Graham, Specter, and the worst of the bunch, Both Bush's have gotten us in the mess we're in today. They tried for years to out liberal the liberals. They are worthless and perceived as such by rank and file conservatives and even some Republicans. The vitality is with the TEA movement and it will absorb the GOP and bring most so called moderates to it as well. The media will NOT select the next GOP pres candidate, believe me. McCain and Dole were hand picked to insure Dem victories but those days of media power are LONG GONE.

Partisan not blind
October 4, 2009 - 13:55 ET by AbraxosI don't think the Obama-adoring media are all that blind. I believe they see the president's narcissism very clearly, but are so heavily committed to what he represents, they let it pass and steadfastly refuse to air anything negative about him or his policy.
But at a deeper level, I think it's not so much Obama that they are devoted to, as they are to the movement of the new world order. Media corporate policy makes the Obamedia far more dangerous and powerful than Obama and his Administration.
When George Will says something boldly on ABC News, it's out there and mainstream. Charlie Gibson can't laughingly say he didn't hear about it.
I believe it will one day be proven that the mainstream media, now
conglomerated into just a handful of owners, is
America's greatest enemy.
If the new Nazi's succeed in shutting down radio and internet free speech, they will have breeched our firewall, and then, Ms. Pelosi, there will be ugliness in the streets like you've never seen before.
Remember the speech to the classrooms of America?
October 4, 2009 - 13:52 ET by carolina09I remember lots of self-referential pronouns in that one, too.
But what was truly cringe-worthy was when Obama took credit for the children's school supplies!
Suggestion for Jack Cashill--do a speech by speech Narcissism Analysis. Is there an Obama speech out there that is not about him?
This made me think...
October 4, 2009 - 14:40 ET by StarAZThis made me think of the old bit where the guy says, "Enough about me. Let's talk about you. What do you think of me?"
So what else is new?...
October 4, 2009 - 14:56 ET by PrairieSkyWith Obama (and Michelle too for that matter), it's always all about him.
Though this is hardly a newsflash, I'm very glad that Will said this...I just wish more in the media would catch on. I'd be willing to bet that a number of them already have, but are too intimidated by the rest of their Obamaton media brethren to say so.
That whole useless excursion to Copenhagen proved to be nothing more than another vanity trip for the Obamas..."Look at us...look at us!" The bright spot was that it blew up in both of their faces.
"The problem is not that people are taxed too little...the problem is that government spends too much." ~President Ronald Reagan
Ironic
October 4, 2009 - 14:47 ET by acumenSmall wonder members of the vast liberal media conspiracy immediately fell in love with the won. Both are a mirror image of the other. George Will's words, "it was all about them" could equally apply to many talking heads in the establishment media.
What else could possibly explain the illuminative paradox in which the establishment media provided more details about the interior of Perky (another befitting attached "adjective" - coincidence?) Katie's colon than the interests of millions of tea partiers?

October 4, 2009 - 19:23 ET by thestalkinghorseThe greater danger is that in another generation the word vain will disappear utterly because no one will recongnize as being abnormal. "I's" for "uh's"
October 5, 2009 - 14:53 ET by OkieflyoverOne of the easy answers to this is that when he uses a teleprompter he doesn't say "uh" and "uhm". He is terrible about doing that when he does speak without the Prompter. He has found a new crutch in his speaking by using "I". When in doubt, use "I".
To think that he could get the Olympic Committee to care whether he could walk to the Olympics is so unbelievable.
So does this mean he lives in Valerie Jarrett's slums if he can walk to the site of the proposed Olympic village from his house?
