Obama Joker Poster Stirs Outrage, Bush Joker Poster Not So Much

Not surprisingly, the Obama Joker Poster reported by NewsBusters Saturday is already drawing some outrage.

According to a television station where the posters have been spotted, "Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson is calling the depiction, politically mean spirited and dangerous."

Yet, when Vanity Fair's Politics & Power blog published a somewhat similar visual representation of George W. Bush last July, nobody seemed to complain. In fact, throughout the Bush years, demeaning drawings of the President and Vice President Dick Cheney were quite commonplace.

But, according to KTLA.com, depicting Barack Obama in unflattering terms is a no no (h/t Sonny Bunch via Jonah Goldberg):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Hutchinson is challenging the group or individual that put up the poster to have the courage and decency to publicly identify themselves.

"Depicting the president as demonic and a socialist goes beyond political spoofery," says Hutchinson, "it is mean-spirited and dangerous."

"We have issued a public challenge to the person or group that put up the poster to come forth and publicly tell why they have used this offensive depiction to ridicule President Obama."

Hmmm. I wonder where the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable was when Vanity Fair published this last July:

And where was the outrage when the Village Voice published this on the cover of its October 26, 2004, issue:

In reality, if I wanted to, I could likely produce hundreds of disgusting drawings of Bush, Cheney, and others in their Administration plastered at publications across the fruited plain the last eight years.

That was acceptable commentary and political satire back then.

Now that Obama is in the White House, it's called "mean-spirited and dangerous."

Any questions?

Imagine the intense outcry if what the poster showed was Obama as Mohammed!

It is not like his middle name has anything to do with Mohammed or his grandchild, right?

Joker Posters

Actually I don't see what all the fuss is about. I voted for Obama and continue to support him and I don't find the poster offensive.

Atlantic Magazine

Does anyone remember Jill Greenberg’s photo of McCain for the Atlantic?  It might be worth reposting here Noel.

I guess only photographs of Obama with a halo are copacetic.

I remember it

I don't have to click on the link because I do remember it well.  It was downright disturbing, and you didn't hear him or his voters whining about it (his daughter rightfully complained tho').  Suddenly this poster is headline newsworthy, with BO at the helm.  Shhh...mustn't speak ill of our leader!

His Majesty The Shahinshah

...sorta like some Leftist posters whining about how my repeated references to the current White House occupant as His Majesty The Shahinshah is "insulting" and "disrespectful", but when Bush was in office...anything and everything went.  You could even make a movie about Bush getting assassinated and win critical acclaim.

But you DARE NOT EVER insult Him.  You cannot even poke fun at Him on a Saturday Night Live routine.  Seriously, it is a wonder that you can find Bibles in American hotels anymore, rather than The Audacity of Hope and Dreams From My Father.

I am just glad that somebody on the right finally has the stones to start sticking it to the left the same way they have been doing to us for years.

Our way of life, indeed our very country, is right now at stake, and this is not the time to play nice with those laboring tirelessly to destroy it.

If we are going to have any chance to win the fight against the freedom-hating swine now working feverishly to "transform" the America we were born in into something decidedly hideous, we are going to eventually have to get down in the mud and wrestle with them.

The ultimate cost of not doing so is just too high.

"Spoofery"

OK obviously this Ohafi Hutchinson guy voted for Obozo and most likely considers himself an intellectual.  And I'm happy to learn that the ObamaJoker poster gets his underwear all bunched up.

I'd say that "spoofery" is a noun, and Earl Ohafi Hutchinson is behaving "stupidly" for his hissy-fit over this brilliant poster of the Village Idiot in Chief!

And BTW just who is this pansy Hutchinson? and his bulls**t organization?

And, Mr. Hutchinson, what ISN'T  socialist about Obama?

I'll tell you ...

... exactly who Earl Ofari Hutchinson is. Because KTLA News sure as hell does not. Here's the bio from his own politics blog:

Nationally acclaimed author and political analyst. He has authored ten books; his articlesare published in newspapers and magazines nationally in the United States.Three of his books have been published in other languages. He is also a socialand political analyst and he appears on such TV programs as CNN, MSBC, NPR, TheO'Reilly Show, American Urban Radio Network, and local Los Angeles televisionand radio stations as well. He is an associate editor at New America Media anda regular contributor to Black News.com, Alternet.com, BlackAmericaWeb.Com andthe Huffington Post. He does a weekly commentary on KJLH Radio in Los Angeles.

So Hutchinson is an author and political analyst with regular radio spots and TV appearances. Gee, ya think KTLA News coulda let their audience know that???

I am sick to death of the whining left using the word 'mean-spirited' and 'dangerous' when it suits them and they are losing a battle.

We must fight back, don't let up for one second, with every tool we have.

The silent majority is dangerous...and they are waking up all across this land....the left are cowering to a point...we cannot stop now...best foot forward...the leftists have to be defeated to save this country and what she stands for.

That horse has left the barn

If the Left criticized a president during a war, like they criticized Bush in Iraq, then the issue of "dangerous" criticism is simply off the table.

  • If criticism during a war isn't dangerous, then neither is criticism of a domestic policy
  • If criticism during a war is dangerous, but they do it anyway, then they have no right to complain when others do it

I'm waiting to hear the Unreflective Left argue that it doesn't matter whether we believe the criticism, any criticism against the president that's "mean-spirited" should be suppressed. We can just forget about what they've said ... and are still saying ... about Bush.

The left knows its constant drumbeat mocking of Bush and being critical of EVERYTHING his administration did was effective in driving down his and the Republican Party poll numbers and enabled the retaking of Congress by Dems.  Any mocking or critizing of Obama will be met by screams of outrage to enable the radical agenda of Obama being passed.  It explains the hysterical attacks on tea parties, Limbaugh, Beck, Dobbs, Rick Santorum, ect ect ect by the left and the enablers in the MSM. Not to mention the attacks on Palin during the election cycle.  Watch now as critics who dare question their congressmen are being described as mobs in the pay of insurance companies by the MSM.

Liberals LIE about wanting a 'fair debate'

Sounds as if the people who made this poster hit a little too close
to the mark for the comfort of the Democrats and liberals.  People are
starting to wake up and see Obama's policies for what they are -
reckless and dangerous lurches to communism.  Demorats in town hall
meetings are being booed and shouted down by the people who know their
talk of a socialist utopia is nothing but a pack of lies.

And Obama is their king liar - a Joker in every sense of the word.

I encourage the people who did this poster to ignore the liberals in
California.  We all know what happens when someone speaks the truth
about liberals in this country.

The media mobilizes an army to try and destroy that person, his family, his friends and anyone around him.

Stay hidden and keep undermining these socialists - dont' let them trick you
into coming forth.  They deceive you with lies about wanting to discuss
things on an even playing field.

But all they do is try to quietly hustle you into the gas chambers.

Quick! Someone ask Sonia Sotomayor what she thinks about the Obama/Joker poster and whether she thinks it is a protected expression of free speech.

As we all know, the Constitution does not protect polite speech (for what need is there for its protection?) but spirited and even offensive speech, and especially political speech.

It is absolutely astounding that, given the repulsive attacks against Pres. Bush, the disturbing and sometimes violently graphic words and images directed toward him from every direction, that this is even an issue.

RE: Obama Joker Poster

I hope G-d will forgive me for the joy and personal satisfaction I got out of seeing this poster. I realize the Bible says we should not have joy at the misfortune of others. The fact is however that after eight years of Bush bashing for no good reason and then the bashing of Sarah Palin and her family. I believe turn about is fair play. We now know that the only time Obama isn't lying is when he is silent. He has earned this poster.

Partial cross post. the Rage Meter is pegged.

This speaks to the same issue. The people in the Press spent close to 8 years promoting every nut that had something negative to say about our President. Promoted. And now decrying anything negative as racist or distracting or mean spirited.

O'DONNELL: Yes I think I do. There is a sense that there are forces out there that are doing harm to this country and so people are looking for a way to de-legitimize... GEORGE W BUSH!

So we have a bunch of people claiming that the President is not validly elected and people in the MSM and internet and party are giving them a voice. THIS IS THE 2000 ELECTION.

Yes. Let's talk about doing harm to the country. Saying our President lied to get us into a war. Saying our President broke our laws. Saying our President broke international law. Saying our President belongs in jail. Saying our President ignored the constitution. Saying our President made the world hate us. Saying our President hates black people. Saying our President tortured. Saying our President ignored evidence that terrorist were planning on mass murder. Saying our President hyped up evidence of WMD's when it was a small part of the reasoning for going in to Iraq. Then spending 3 years whining because we did not find WMD's. Blaming our President for a natural disaster that people had 5 days to prepare for. Saying our President exploded the deficits and broke the economy.

O'DONNELL: -in America. And the thing that concerns me is that rather than focusing on things that unite us, that people are concentrating on things that divide us.

And who was right out there in front with cameras on the Plame liars, and that nut camping out in front of Bush's ranch, and every single time 4 nuts got together with signs and walked down the sidewalk, and the nuts with the pink t-shirts, and every hollywood nut that thinks fire won't melt steel. How about the idiot who gave these people voices every single night with his Sir Sir Sir rants.

And what about the constant lending of support to our enemies by keeping a few pictures of naked terrorists in the news, exposing our national secrets, and the whining about Gitmo, and the whining about trials in Gitmo, and the whining about treatment of prisoners in Gitmo. And what about the MSM and members of Congress calling our soldiers terrorists, and Nazi's, and mercenaries, and murderers.

MATTHEWS: This guy is an American like us. Stop the talk.

Yes. George W Bush was an American like us, an American tasked with protecting this country.

So what do we have here. Some people want to peak at the Presidents records. And other people are calling him a racist based upon his racist remark and history of hanging out with racists.

Cry me a river. Obama has it easy on the talk.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Re Origins

Note that the original artist appears to have been found, a photography/photoshop fan with the handle khateeb88 on Flickr. Note the copyright; January 2009. He appears to be a far-left Chicago muslim who doesn't think the Bamster is pushing enough change. A liberal, as we suspected.

slick

slick,

I don't believe this is the originator for his post is January 2009. At the top left of the poster in question is a date in October 2008.   ns

Re Originator

The date on the poster can be mistakenly read as October 23, 2008, but it is not 2008, rather it is 2006. (There was no Time magazine dated October 23, 2008 anyway.)

This is the closest Time cover date to October 23, 2008:  http://www.time.com

It's an Obama cover (surprise) which muddies the question, but it's a lousy match. Now look at the October 23, 2006 cover:  http://www.time.com

That's drop-dead obviously the cover on which the khateeb version was based, the headlines match and the picture matches and it happened to fall on the 23rd, etc. (It of course eliminates any copyright claim of khateeb which I should have said in the first post.) I think the artist scanned the magazine cover he had handy and worked from there.

So the date on the cover is not a great clue as to who the artist is, it simply came from the Time cover.  The URL that can't be made out in the poster version is plausibly time.com. Khateeb didn't necessarily think up the notion of Obama as the Joker, but I think that he is the likely artist of this rendition. 'His rendition' matches stroke-for-stroke those spotted in LA.

Someone could look further for artifacts of the original 'Time' banner and other headlines in the LA poster for further evidence.

bush=evil? obama=good?

<sarcasm> because we all know that bush is an anagram for evil and that obama is an anagram for "all is good and light" </sarcasm>

Barry the Joker

The guy who did the Village Voice cover is a loony libutard named Alex Ross who at that time tried to claim that, by doing the cover of W as a vampire biting the Statue of Liberty, he was a latter-day Norman Rockwell. When a few people called him on it and criticized when he did, guess what? He instanted transformed into a whiny lib claiming he had the right to depict W that way because of freedom of expression. His father is a minister, which, I believe, explains a great deal why Ross pontificates and moralized about things he knows litte or nothing about.

Obama Joker?

While I think this is a cool picture, I don't understand the artist's intentions.

The Joker wasn't a socialist.  Have you seen the Dark Knight?  He's all about anarchy, which, last time I checked, was the enemy of socialism.

I would argue that the Joker is the exact opposite of a socialist, which makes me wonder, what's the point of this poster exactly?

You make an excellent

You make an excellent point.

But, hmm...2 posts in 11 weeks.  Something fishy here.

Anarchy and the Dark Knight

Sometimes you have to tear down a house to rebuild it. The Joker may not have been a socialist, but he was not an anarchist for the sake of anarchy. He created anarchy in Gotham to impose his will and establish his order ... by specifically demonizing Batman and attempting to coerce him into unmasking and surrendering.

In Rome, with the enemies at the gate, the people gave up their democracy to Caesar ... and he never surrendered his power.

Unfortunately, as Hoffer pointed out in The True Believer, demagogues, charasmatic leaders, and revolutionaries in general are good at stirring up the fearful and disgruntled masses and destroying the status quo, but much less successful at creating anything of lasting value or stability other than tyranny.

Re Anarchy

Since you asked, if you look at Cloward-Piven and the original intent of ACORN, the destruction of the existing system was seen as an interim step to the building of a socialist paradise. A state of anarchy would do nicely as that interim state.

But I don't believe that the artist was getting at that. The artist was just disappointed that the Bamster is not radical enough for him and he decided to ridicule him in a culturally relevant way that he though might catch on.

This is foolish.   1)

This is foolish.

1) You're rationalizing the Joker as if he's a real person with real intentions.  He is a version of the many different Joker characters written over the years, this time by Jonathan and Christopher Nolan.

2) Anarchism by definition is "belief in the abolition of all government and the organization of society on a voluntary, cooperative basis without recourse to force or compulsion."

What you're suggesting here, theoretically, is that in order to build a very specific, large scale socialist government, the people must completely and voluntarily deconstruct ALL forms of government, and then change their minds 100% and return to a completely over-controlling government?  Let's move on from this one.

RE: "What you're suggesting here, theoretically, is that in order to build a very specific, large scale socialist government, the people must completely and voluntarily deconstruct ALL forms of government, and then change their minds 100% and return to a completely over-controlling government?"

Sorry. I think you're creating a straw-man argument here. That's not what the previous poster said.

However, in order to create "change" (as envisioned by Obama and his like-minded associates and enablers), the easiest path to that end is to exploit the malcontents and have-nots by demonizing the status-quo, attack traditional values and institutions, and de-legitimize accepted rule of law - have you forgotten the presidfential campaign so soon?

No one is saying that absolute anarchy is desired or expected, but the template for de-constructing societies and achieving the goals of the progressives, the intelligentia, the revolutionaries, the mystics, the Marxists, the fascists, and the statists in have been well documented in the works of Hoffer, Huxley, Alinsky, and Orwell to name a few.

metaphorsbwithu

Absolute anarchy?  You

Absolute anarchy?  You can't sorta believe in having a government - you either do or you don't.  Period.  This argument that the government wants to abolish government in order to reestablish government makes no sense.  Who makes the laws in this country? __________(space for your answer).  Do you think they want to lose their jobs and their power by basically eliminating them, only to years later run on a new socialist platform?  Do you have any idea how long it would take to create and implement a pure, socialist government? ____________(space for your answer).  My answer, being the obvious, is many, many years longer than Obama has left in office.

Now, you called my argument a "straw man" argument.  Do you care to elaborate, or are you just one of those debaters who yells "you're wrong" and thinks it's an argument?

"If we love our country, we should also love our countrymen." Ronald Reagan

It must be lonely in left-field

What part of the expression "straw man" do you not understand? I repeated your own words in italics. They are very clear.

You set up a premise the previous poster did not articulate and then dismissed him or her as being wrong. Then you did the same to mine in arguing that a government that wants to abolish government to re-establish government makes no sense.

Lord knows where that came from!

You seem to grasp disjointed or tenuously-connected ideas and concepts out of the air or out of your own head to rail away against, trying to lure someone into your sticky icky web to fight, instead of simply commenting on the subject at hand.

Anyway, my time is too valuable to me to debate on these pages or answer fill-in-the-blank questions. I make my observations and give my opinions simply and clearly like most everyone else.

However, if you, sir or madam, have an issue with the methods and goals of revolutionaries, demagogues, and rabble rousers, as expressed in black and white in their own words and the words of people (like Hoffer) who have studied them and lived under their oppression, argue with their ghosts to your heart's content.

Have a nice life, but please stop putting words in other people's mouths.

 metaphorsbwithu

My god!  This isn't about

My god!  This isn't about revolutionaries, demagogues, rabble rousers or anyone else.  This is about a cartoon!  This argument is completely philosophical.  This country is headed neither towards anarchy nor socialism.  I know it's a popular fear topic, but it just ain't gonna happen.  Even if Obama socialized medicine, it's one of a zillion governmental programs he'd need to reestablish in order to have a true socialist government.  Remember, he's only got a little more than 3 years left.  It's taken 7 months so far and public medicine hasn't changed a bit.  The inefficiency of government will ensure we never see socialized medicine.  Of course, if socialism is such an imminent fear as predicted by the right, I would expect everyone to return their social security checks to the government, just as they demanded their governors to reject their state's stimulus money.

Okay, back to the point.  The artist who created this creepy Obama Joker poster intended nothing more than making the president look like a fool, just as they did with the Bush Joker poster.  You're giving him too much credit.

"If we love our country, we should also love our countrymen." Ronald Reagan

I'm Not Sure

I'm not sure if the ''artist'' had any other intention than to present Hussein as a crazy @$$ SOB for wanting to ''Change'' our society into Socialism (''spread the wealth'').  The ''point'' is that it's

1.  Cool

2.  Accurate (Hussein is a clown)

3.  Visually bold

4.  It makes fun of the biggest pompous ass in the country.  (oo - second biggest.  Olbermann is the biggest.)

Good point

delete thank you

Good point

however,

This "attack" on the messiah stirs the double standard that we have come to love and enjoy from the looney left.

Idiots on the left see it as racist... intelligent conservatives see it for what it is.

Democraps --- I know a few and some of then are seemingly intelligent people (unitil you talk to them)

Yea, my favorite 2 questions

Democrats still, always a hate group

Given the Marxist history of the Demonicratic super-race, no one should doubt the hate vividly on display by those who rendered the Bush drawings, i.e., the devil is in the details.

It's like Comedy Central, run by two Nazi youth members. The Stewart and Colbert shows are a combination of a Ku Klux Klan meeting and open mic night at a comedy club. To Demonicrats, hate is fun. And, if it's fun, it's not hate!
