Is making a racist remark about President Obama's daughter worse than wishing a conservative talk show host would die?
Such should be asked of MSNBC's Keith Olbermann who on Monday was quite angered by some truly tasteless comments about Malia Obama posted last week at Free Republic.
Yet, back in April when Olbermann published a diary at the liberal website Daily Kos concerning his waterboarding challenge to Sean Hannity, the "Countdown" host wasn't at all outraged by the venomous attacks made on the Fox News star which included some Kossacks wishing he would die.
For those that can stand it, here's a sampling of such commentary:
prefer if you paid for Sean to be parachuted into rural Iraq without backup. Shitbird vs. wild.Give to netroots for the troops!
by bubbanomics on Fri Apr 24, 2009 at 09:54:37 AM PDT [...]
Nice, huh? Or how about these Kos Kids who want to urinate in the bucket that will be used:
Or how about this lovely sentiment:
I'll throw in a grand if they end up trach-ing Hannity and he has to spend the rest of his life putting a finger over the tube in order to say 'it wasn't torture'...It's often said that life is strange. But compared to what? --Steve Forbert
Or this:
inanity
I've got a better idea. Let's just keep the water flowing until he goes limp, and the world is suddenly a slightly nicer place to live.
Now, these comments were posted almost three months ago, and are still up...in a thread created by Olbermann no less.
Did he enter this thread and chastise those making such remarks?
Not that I can see.
Did he contact Markos Moulitsas and complain about this behavior?
Well, if he did, the comments are still available.
Did he make Moulitsas the "Worst Person in the World" for allowing such commentary at his website?
Of course not.
Has he boycotted the site as a result?
Nope, he's written three diaries since.
As such, I guess in Olbermann's view, it must be worse to make racist remarks about Malia than talk about Sean Hannity's death.
Any questions?

July 16, 2009 - 18:38 ET by Jen7Find a liberal blog/website where commentors trashed Bristol and called her a whore, approved of the comments, then put a representative on TV to excuse those comments. Okay? That would be a fair comparison.

You came into this thread moments after it was published claiming this was a "stinky" comparison. I then asked you a simple yes or no question. If you can't answer it, consider yourself persona non grata and the troll everyone here claims you to be. Capiche? ns
Noel.....
July 17, 2009 - 02:06 ET by Timothy HI know it may seem like I'm coming down on the liberal side of things here, but I think that in my 3+ years here I have displayed more thought than partisanship. And I respect and tend to agree with you, Noel, about 99 % of the time. But......
I'll give you the answer you wanted Jen to give, Noel. Yes. It is worse for people to bring a politician's child into the arena than it is for idiots on a blog to post the tripe that the above idiots were posting.
Why? For the same reason that I will never watch David Letterman again. Because, While I pretty much disagree with Obama across the board ("pretty much" only because he did order the pirates sniped from the boat) , his children didn't run for office. Attacking them, or Sarah Palin's children, or those of any politician, is nothing more than a pathetic excuse for lowbrow humor from morons who ran out of ideas to bash the politician themselves.
But the strength behind my argument lies here. Will Sean Hannity sleep any worse after reading that tripe? Will any of those things actually happen? And, though it matters less it is still relevent, does Sean insert himself into the public eye? No, No and Yes. Sean is strong, and I doubt he suffered any lasting effects from such a waste of cyberspace.
But the children of these politicians are young and this sort of thing can be brutal on them. It is possible that these things CAN do lasting emotional damage.
So, YES. It is worse. In the end, the remarks written/speken about politicians' children have a greater potential to cause true harm.
All that being said, though, Olberman is still a blazing hypocrit. Where was his righteous indignation when it was Sarah Palin's kids being attacked? Where was the passionate display then?
Your core point is still good one way or the other, Noel.
Olberman is a hypocritical piece of fecal waste.

Tim
July 17, 2009 - 10:06 ET by Noel SheppardTim,
Minorities live with racism all their lives. I've lived with anti-Semitism all my life. Do you actually believe this was the first time Malia experienced racism? Or the last?
Furthermore, do you think she spends much time at Free Republic? Do you think she would have heard about any of this if it hadn't been hypocritically brought up at Daily Kos? Or if it hadn't been hypocritically reported by Shuster and Olbermann?
In the end, these were foolish comments made at a website, much like the comments about Hannity. If they got no attention beyond those websites, Malia wouldn't have heard about them and neither would Sean.
With that as pretext, if we actually want to compare which is worse, any conclusion that a racist comment -- regardless of the subject it's directed at -- is a stronger "assault" than claiming you want someone to die is totally absurd.
People survive racist remarks. Death is final.
Sorry, but I don't see any logic whatsoever in a contrary view. ns
Noel....
July 17, 2009 - 12:59 ET by Timothy HI could agree with your point, if not for the fact that this isn't theory. There is an actual example involved. While we can speak in what if's, the reality is that these things DO get reported on and these children, from Malia to Bristol, do suffer the effects. These children become the object of nationally broadcast ridicule. My kids suffer when a bully at school picks on them. Imagine the humiliation if the bully was reported on, and in some cases agreed with on a national platform. I know the thought seems overly simplified, but simplified or not, it is realistic.
To reverse your question, do you think that this is the first time Sean has had to read about people's sick fantasies about his death? Political pundits, especially Conservatives (would hazard a guess that this even applies to our own dear Brent Bozell, though I couldn't say for sure) deal with the ill wishes of the not-like-minded throughout their whole career, and just judging from what I've seen, probably more often than minorities actually experience racism. Racism is socially unacceptable. Conservative assault is PC.
Where I really think that your logic strays, though, is here.....
"People survive racist remarks. Death is final."
Sean did not experience death, nor will he at the hands of or in the ways desired by the blog commenters. Malia did experience racism. So I only see one target that was actually hurt by the example in question. How many pundit's lives have been ended by the sharp, twisted tongues of bloggers? But I still believe that, if we take Gov. Palin at her word (and I do), The attacks by bloggers, Letterman, and the media in general on her children did have some part in her resignation, even if it was no larger part than to persuade her children, all of whom she polled, to vote yes for leaving office. To me, it's not that the remark is racist, but that it was directed at a child who never asked to be in the public spotlight.
So....I have to disagree with you here, and I fail to see the logic in the contrary view. ;-)
(edit: But only to the point on which is worse. Olby is still a hypocritical tool and both situations are still vile - TH)
(edit again: I also wanted to make the point that my opinion is contingent on the example, and were both victims adult public figures, than my view on the subject would be different in that I would feel they are equally vile - TH)

Tim
July 17, 2009 - 12:59 ET by Noel SheppardTim,
Well, there's something I think you're missing and that is neither of these acts were actually perpetrated on the subjects. They were expressed somewhat anonymously at message boards. So, to clarify your position if you don't mind, there actually was no racism expressed towards Malia just as there were no death threats towards Sean. Follow me?
So, let's bring this closer to home: which would be worse, someone saying a racial epithet directly to Malia or someone saying to Sean's face he should die?
Forgive me, but I would be MUCH more offended by someone telling me they'd like me dead than calling me a cheap Jew.
Taking this a step further, I think someone wishing I was dead would be worse than someone calling my son or daughter a cheap Jew.
See my point? ns
Noel, absolutely....but
July 17, 2009 - 14:06 ET by Timothy HI absolutely agree with you there. But those are still what-ifs. The subject was based on the reality, cowardly and facelessly anonymous as it is. None of the things that you mentioned actually happened in these cases. That would be why my opinion is where it stands. Had those things happened, my opinion would change, but they didn't.
And my family has suffered both, in real life. I am half Lakota Sioux and my then 7 year old daughter was attacked by an adult and threatened with death at his trial, by the attacker and his family. So I do have some perspective on which you speak as well.
In the new examples you gave, I would agree with you.
But, in the original examples given, I still feel the same way I did, as they are much different circumstances from the newly presented ones.

It really wasn't hard.....unless you can't defend your own position.
So I guess that I don't get the bullying thing. Noel handled my criticism like a champ, but then, I actually backed up my opinion. July 16, 2009 - 19:09 ET by nadadhimmiLiberals are mostly failures. College proffs that never had the guts to leave the campus into the real world, or lazy asses without an iota of self motivation or dedication. Then, there are the liberal leaders, seeking power by disseminating workers money to those that don't work. These leaders are the worst because they rely on using the morons for personal power gain even as they personally despise them for the fools they are. They resemble drug pushers addicting people to the drug of free money. The final group of libs are the truly stupid ones, like Cindy Sheehan. To damn dumb to realize when they are being used and discarded like an old tampon.

July 16, 2009 - 20:19 ET by Retired GeekMichelle and Barack Obama attended a 'Racist' Church 23 years - they had their children baptized by a 'Racist' in a 'Racist Church'.
A church who made the writings of 'Racist James Cone' required reading for all new members.
"Whiteness, as revealed in the history of America, is the expression of what is wrong with man. It is a symbol of man's depravity. God cannot be white, even though white churches have portrayed him as white. When we look at what whiteness has done to the minds of men in this country, we can see clearly what the New Testament meant when it spoke of the principalities and powers."
- James H. Cone; Black Theology & Black Power; p 150

A church that awarded 'Racist Louis Farrakhan' a lifetime achievment award.
"The white man is our mortal enemy, and we cannot accept him." Farrakhan
"Six-thousand years ago, an evil wizard called Dr. Yacub created the white "race" in a genetic experiment." Farrakhan

Check the documentation on my blog
July 16, 2009 - 20:22 ET by Retired GeekBarack Obama was mentored by Communist Frank Marshall Davis, Communist writer and poet (1905-1987).
Frank Marshall Davis was identified unequivocally as a CPUSA member in a 1951 report of the Commission on Subversive Activities.

Barack Obama carefully chose William 'Bill' Ayers who said, "Kill all the rich people. ... Bring the revolution home. Kill your parents."
In the 1960s, Bernardine Dohrn and her husband Bill Ayers were leaders of the "Weatherman" faction, which in 1969 went underground to become America's first terrorist cult.
Barack Obama launched his political career in the home of Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.
----------------------------------------------
Alice Palmer met Barack Obama during meetings at the home of Bill Ayers and hand picked Obama to fill her newly vacated 'State Senate Seat'.
Alice Palmer served as an executive board member of the U.S. Peace Council, which the FBI identified as a Communist front group.
----------------------------------------------
Michael Klonsky was chosen by Barack Obama as a blogger on the 'Obama official Website'. Klonsky a former leader of 'SDS' - Students for a Democratic Society and a leader of the 'New Communist Party'.

Tim Wheeler is a National Board member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), and has been a key figure in the party's Baltimore chapter since the early 1970s. He helped organize local canvassing and visibility events for Obama, and he chronicled his experiences on the campaign trail in a blog that appeared on the Obama campaign website.

Jeremiah Wright was carefully chosen by Barack Obama to 'Mentor' him and be his spiritual guide.
Mentor Wright became famous for screaming 'God Damn America' from the pulpit at TUCC.

They joined the Church, were married there, baptized their children there and stayed members over 20 years.
In addition, Barack Obama chose the Pastor of the Church - Jeremiah Wright - as his personal 'Mentor and Spiritual Adviser'.

The obama white mama
July 16, 2009 - 22:05 ET by RD Kingdidn't do him any good, she was at least as big or bigger commie than he is. He was raised to be what he is today by all his parents how many ever it was and doesn't have the good sense to change his ways and be a decent human being. When he is gone and that doesn't mean dead just gone, as for me and mine it will be dancing in the streets, not a wish just a good thing for America.

Seems that as Obummer's poll numbers and support tanks these types have to find other things...like is getting on a few Freepers' posts going to make Obamacare work?
A real waste of air time. It's their dime-I can only surmise their swimming in money so bad ratings are no longer an issue. Used to be these networks pulled even good shows with good ratings if they got antsy about them for some reason.
One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).
To really quantitfy which is worse - use the same individual
July 17, 2009 - 10:37 ET by iiiireaderWould it be worse to call the young lady a racial slur or to plot out the many ways in which someone should kill her? I'd vote the latter each and every time. Insults pass - death is final.
What concerns me about this is that "hate crimes" legislation may eventually carry heavier penalties for speech "crimes" against minorities than for murder of whites. After all, it's just part of leveling the playing field.
This country is on life-support and someone will pull the plug soon.
