One year ago tomorrow, former White House press secretary Tony Snow sadly succumbed to his three-year battle with colon cancer.
To commemorate the anniversary, the Fox News Channel on Sunday will feature respects paid by dignitaries, former co-workers, and Tony Snow fans far and wide.
As reported by TVNewser Friday:
This Sunday, TVNewser has learned, Fox News Channel will mark the anniversary of Snow's death with numerous mentions of him throughout the day, along with thoughts from Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush and from FNC colleagues such as Bill O'Reilly and Greta Van Susteren.
As most of you know, Tony was a dear friend of the Media Research Center's, and gave an extraordinary speech at our Gala last year that didn't leave a dry eye in the house:
After his passing, Brit Hume logged the following tribute:
Rush Limbaugh called in to Fox to offer his thoughts that morning:
People from all over the country began e-mailing FNC with their tidings:
"Laura and I are deeply saddened by the death of our dear friend, Tony Snow. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Jill, and their children, Kendall, Robbie and Kristi. The Snow family has lost a beloved husband and father. And America has lost a devoted public servant and a man of character. ... He brought wit, grace and a great love of country to his work. His colleagues will cherish memories of his energetic personality and relentless good humor. All of us here at the White House will miss Tony, as will the millions of Americans he inspired with his brave struggle against cancer."
— President George W. Bush
"He served people, and we can learn from that. He was kind, and we can learn from that. He was just a good person."
— former President George H.W. Bush
"The White House has lost a great friend and a great colleague. We all loved watching him at the podium, but most of all we learned how to love our families and treat each other. We have Jill and the children in our thoughts and prayers."
— White House Press Secretary and former Snow deputy Dana Perino
"Tony did his job with more flair than almost any press secretary before him. He loved the give-and-take. But that was possible only because Tony was a man of substance who had real beliefs and principles that he was more than able to defend."
— Bush's former chief speechwriter William McGurn.
"Churchill said, 'I like a man who grins when he fights,' and that was Tony Snow. For 35 years, as a writer, broadcaster and spokesman, he fought fiercely for what he believed in, and he did it with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. His loss is a loss for our country. ... Despite everything Tony did and achieved in life, he never forgot his hometown roots or those who grew up with him. He was a proud son of Cincinnati, and I will miss him."
— House Republican Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio
"Tony brought great determination to his long career in journalism and public service, and his approach to his battle with cancer was no different. My thoughts are with his family."
— Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
"Tony was a man of unique talent and extraordinary character — a determined spokesman, a dogged conservative, and a dedicated husband and father. His influence on the political dialogue of this country was as remarkable as it was pervasive — but at no time did Tony ever perspective on what was truly important in his life, and at no point did he ever lose the famous sense of humor and wit which accompanied that perspective."
— House Republican Whip Roy Blunt, R-Mo.
"He was a loving father, husband, friend and truly one of America's most gifted commentators. Whether he sat behind a radio mic or stood behind a White House podium, Tony Snow always sought to give the American people new insights into our government, political process and leaders. He asked the tough questions and took them as well. Even when diagnosed with cancer, his fight served as an inspiration to all Americans."
— Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.
"Tony Snow's passing is a national loss. His intellect, his decency and his professionalism set a high standard for conservatives in public service and journalism. America will miss his voice and I will miss a friend."
— Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind.
"It's a tremendous loss for us who knew him, but it's also a loss for the country."
— FOX News Chairman Roger Ailes
"Even if you were just a work friend of his, your life was enriched. Being around him made you a better person, a better journalist. That's the thing I've been missing about Tony for the last year or so."
— FOX News Congressional Correspondent Major Garrett
"Tony Snow was a gentleman."
— FOX News Chief Washington Correspondent Jim Angle
"He was a lot of fun."
— Griff Jenkins, Snow's FOX News producer
"I started off working at FOX as a producer for Tony's 'Weekend Live' show. I've worked with him and watched him from the control room during the lead-up to the Iraq war and also during the last election cycle. I was in Egypt in May, interviewing the Egyptian president's son. The information minister had a conversation with me about how much they liked and respected Tony Snow. Many people don't realize Tony's international reach."
— Reena Ninan, FOX News Jerusalem bureau
MRC President Brent Bozell offered the following:
Tony was a man brimming with optimism and you just felt that if anyone could beat this cancer, he could do it. He was an absolute professional in his craft and always, always a gentleman.
The conservative movement is diminished today and anyone who knew him is heartbroken for his wife, Jill, and his three children Kendall, Robbie, and Kristi.
“Rest in peace, gentle warrior.”
Indeed.
Please take a moment out of your busy schedules tomorrow to remember our dear friend.

July 11, 2009 - 15:13 ET by acumenI was reading the quotes Noel posted and I thought the adjectives used to describe Tony were well deserved. However, I considered those same words of praise could be used to describe many other good folks. But there was something special about Tony that set him apart from a lot of other good folks. Something from within that gave his eyes that twinkle and made his smile especially kind. Tony was a man of strong religious views that were so integral to his outlook on life. Tony was a great man because Tony was a man of deep personal faith.
The following are a couple of excerpts from a speech Tony gave on May 12, 2007 to the graduating class of Catholic University where Tony talks about the importance of faith:
"But see, there’s more. Once you’ve gotten past the mirror phase, then things begin to get really interesting. You begin to confront the truly overwhelming question: Why am I here? And that begins to open up the whole universe, because it impels you to think like the child staring out at the starry night: “Who put the lights in the sky? Who put me here? Why?” And pretty soon you are thinking about God. Don’t shrink from pondering God’s role in the universe or Christ’s. You see, it’s trendy to reject religious reflection as a grave offense against decency. That’s not only cowardly. That’s false. Faith and reason are knitted together in the human soul. So don’t leave home without either one."
"When it comes to faith, I’ve taken my own journey. You will have to take your own. But here’s what I know. Faith is as natural as the air we breathe. Religion is not an opiate, just the opposite. It is the introduction to the ultimate extreme sport. There is nothing that you can imagine that God cannot trump. As Paul said “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” And once you realize that there is something greater than you out there, then you have to decide, “Do I acknowledge it and do I act upon it?” You have to at some point surrender yourself. And there is nothing worthwhile in your life that will not at some point require an act of submission. It’s true of faith and friendship."
Through faith, Tony acknowledged there was something greater than himself and surrendered. God in turn rewarded us all with the gift of Tony's friendship. We miss you Tony. Yet faith assures us we will meet again someday faithful friend.

July 11, 2009 - 15:29 ET by BlondeThere are certain people in this world, and you don't meet them often, who have that "something special"...a certain je ne sais quoi....that makes everyone's life the richer for having met the person.
Tony Snow was one of those people. Even though we didn't personally know him, the force of his personality and virtue shone right through the camera lens and into our hearts.
We were richer for having had him in our lives, and are now it's a fitting tribute to remember him and his family on this anniversary of his death.
His absence makes our world a slightly less bright place.
And thanks to NS for posting this today.

July 11, 2009 - 14:10 ET by PrairieSkyTony Snow was one of the good guys...He really was, in every way...He was extremely good at his job(s), he was a good friend, he was a good son, father and husband. Tony was simply a good man...From time to time over the last year I have thought about him and hoped that his wife and children are doing well. Tony left a big hole in the lives of so many when he died, and I think it's great that Fox is commemorating the 1st anniversary of his death. He was such an integral part of the beginning of Fox News, and he was so exceptional at what he did, that it is appropriate that he be remembered in such a way, and I'm looking foward to watching this special look back at his life.
My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family and friends...

July 11, 2009 - 14:52 ET byHe's dead. Get over it. Why all the media coverage of a man who's been dead for a year? Don't you have something better to cover? The ECONOMY, JOBS, THE WARS, what happened to the urgency of their coverage which you pathetic people espoused in the wake of Jacko's death?
It is AMAZINGLY hypocritical for you people to be doing this for Snow after PISSING AND MOANING like jilted little B-yotches about the media coverage of the most famous entertainer in the history of the world.
So, it's not appropriate to cover the death of the MOST FAMOUS person who has died since Elvis, but is IS appropriate to wast ink on a journalist nobody knows, because you liked his political views!
While conservatives certainly know who Tony Snow was, I seriously DOUBT if his picture in a supermarket checkout line, would ring many bells!

One Day of remembrance versus 2 weeks of eulogies
July 11, 2009 - 15:09 ET by CobraManI see that Acts is unable to differentiate between one day of remembrance, as in the case of Tony Snow, and two weeks (and more!) of 24 hour MSM eulogies, as is the case for MJ. As with all pseudo-intellectuals, all things are equal for Acts, so nothing, and no one, is special.

July 11, 2009 - 15:08 ET by RR GOPI agree there are some valid points there. However, I remember how Tony Snow was vilified by the Left even to the point of hoping with glee that his death would be accelerated...just because the man worked for the hated President Bush. Him being sick and knowing he was going probably going to die, he still had to endure this constant stream of hate as well as his family. There was nothing to gain by doing that. It was simply rabid hatred and selfishness on their part.
The attacks on him from the Left were most vile and unjustified. I have never heard anything bad about this man even with the raw hatred of Libtardom being spewed everywhere. To the best of my knowledge, he didn't sleep with other people's children, wasn't a drug addict nor have I heard about him having done anything of a criminal or dishonest nature. There was just nothing other than his political views to attack the man for. And besides, what monster attacks someone who is dying and won't be around long anyway?
So if people want to remember him, for whatever reason and knowing that the MSM won't then I can see no harm in that whatsoever.
