Greta Slams Politico Accusation She's Todd Palin's 'Handler'

Politico on Saturday accused Greta Van Susteren of being Todd Palin's "host AND handler" at a pre-White House Correspondents' dinner brunch, and the Fox News host is none too pleased.

This was at least the second time in two months Politico has implied an improper alliance between Van Susteren and the Palins, and the "On the Record" host wasn't going to let them get away with it.

On Sunday, she posted a response at her FoxNews.com blog (h/t TVNewser):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

On Saturday morning (before the night’s big dinner) I was at a social brunch (like everyone else in the media), and brought a guest like almost everyone in the media did.  A Politico reporter came up to our Fox guest Todd Palin with a pad to take notes and interview Todd Palin (it says “started to chat” but that is not what happened or what was going on….no one is that stupid to believe that.) It was an attempt to interview him when he did not agree to it or ask for it — print paparazzi at a brunch /party!

This meshed quite well with Carol E. Lee's report:

POLITICO started to chat with Alaska's "first dude" when Van Susteren intervened. The host of On The Record told us this brunch was "off the record" - no talking with the husband of former Republican vice presidential nominee, Gov. Sarah Palin.

Asked why, Van Susteren told us - as we held pen, pad, recorder and camera in hand - well, you know, at these things you can't always figure out who's on the record or off the record when you chit chat. And, she added, with all the background noise Palin could easily be misquoted.

Pretty clear they were trying to interview Palin, correct? Van Susteren explained why this was inappropriate:

If  Todd Palin had said something about coming there for a social event (instead of me), you know what would have happened — he would have been trashed….which would have been unfair.   The reporter may have been working – but he was not.  He was at a social event and not looking to be ambushed by a surprise interview.

I did not bring a guest to be interviewed or grilled by the press but, like everyone else in the media, I brought the guest so the guest could meet people and have a good social time.   And I certainly did not bring the guest so that Politico could interview him — I have enough friends in the business that I could do better if that were my motive….or I would have interviewed him myself.  If you noticed, I did not interview him.

Here is another tidbit: our guest is NOT a candidate for office — and never has been a candidate for office.  Our guest is a family member of a politician.  Our guest was there to simply attend a social event.

So, when the Politico reporter started to interview my guest with pad and paper and I politely say this is a social event, off the record,  I am suddenly a “handler?”  a handler? Huh? Maybe I had just had good manners for a guest?

And let me get this straight, I am the only one in the media who brought a guest? Ah….I think not….in fact, EVERYONE in the media brought a guest to the weekend’s social events….so I guess EVERYONE in the media is now a handler? or just those who brought guests and tried to show good manners at a social event?

Actually, Greta, the press abdicated manners and human decency many months ago concerning Alaska's first family, and anybody in the media showing them a shred of common courtesy will be punished.

Handler?

Hardly.   And good for her, I'm sure this breach of manners and outright rudeness by Politco highly offended her sense of fair play.

I believe every word she wrote.

Greta Van Sustern, when not doing the "dead girl" stories, is a really excellent reporter, IMO.  I love to see her interviews about things with which she's not familiar....i.e. the B-2 Bomber.  It's very apparent that she has that sharp legal researcher mind, because her questions are terrific, and designed to cause the responses to inform her viewers.

She's also one of the more neutral interviewers around.  While I've seen her glom on to an issue, if her interviewee declines to respond a couple of times, she'll move on and not get ugly.

Obviously, she's spent a good deal of time interviewing the Palin's, and has built a level of trust with them, to the point that they know she may ask hard questions, but won't try to smear them.

I've seen her called a liberal here many times, but I've not really seen anything she's said that I could point a finger at.

So kudos, Greta.  Keep up the good work.

I hope he fails, too.

Reporters have no business

Reporters have no business doing what she did - on duty or off.

Sure it was a nice thing she did as a human being and as a friend, but I don't want people I get news from hanging out with newsmakers - or the husbands of newsmakers - PERIOD.

I really expect more from Newsbusters than just being cheerleaders for the GOP.

You're backing a loser, Heater.

What have you to say about Julie Chen?  Andrea Mitchell?

Keep it up...you've posted twice and are looking like an idiot.

I hope he fails, too.

I'd say exactly the same

I'd say exactly the same thing about Julie Chen and Andrea Mitchell -- it's inappropriate.

Heater did you miss

Heater did you miss this:

and brought a guest like almost everyone in the media did.

That's what these social events are FOR...to hobnob with the media!

The MSM wouldn't (and apparently didn't) recognize good manners when they were hit upside the head with them!

They might say "Wow, that sucks!"  But at least they'll say "Wow!"  -Duff Goldman, the Ace of Cakes

Well Let's Go On the

  • Chris Cuomo, brother of Andrew and son of Mario on Good Morning America,
  • Chris "Tingle" Matthews former aid to Tip O'Neil
  • the late Tim Russert, former aid to Patrick Moynihan.
  • David Gregory, husband of Fannie Mae senior executive.

we could go on for pages.

You are confusing this latest troll to NB's.

Great post.

"On duty or off?" Are you

"On duty or off?"

Are you comparing reporters to cops or doctors?

It was clearly defined as a social event - the correspondent had a video camera and probably a sound man. So they should be allowed to ambush anyone in attendance "on the record?"

Give me a break.

It was a social function and Todd was there to enjoy himself

Yet somehow if you send a camera crew after the lefties filing the frivolous ethics complaints against Palin, they scream they're being stalked and harassed.  Like Amanda Terkel when Bill O'Reilly blasted her for her criticism of that rape victim.

JJ

JJ,

Actually, she's fast becoming Fox's most fair and balanced prime time host. Her interview style is firm but courteous regardless of which side of the aisle her guest is on.

She interviewed Newt a few weeks ago, and I thought it was one of the best interviews I've ever seen of him: not sycophantic which can sometimes be the case when questioned by "our" side, and not dismissive and condescending like is so often the case with the MSM.

I'm really starting to like her show, and wish she'd stick with hard news whilst avoiding the tabloid stuff completely. ns

True, NS

Beat you to it, though.  Our fellow poster here, Clyde Gatton, got me to change my mind about Greta a couple of years ago (both Cheeseheads, LOL).   Those dead girl programs, though....ish.

Truly, the only bias I've seen her exhibit is in regard to legal things...she's a lawyer after all, and I'd imagine a good one, so it's natural that she'd go at it with a POV with Megyn Kelly, Kimberly Guilfoil, and the rest of the Fox legal beagles.

I hope he fails, too.

Well said Blonde! I

Well said Blonde!

I totally agree. Greta is one of the true professionals in the business.  I think she tends to lean to the left, personally, but on the job, you'd have to look really hard to find any bias.

I'm not much into the "dead girl" stuff, as you put it, but when she does an interview, or any other story, I am always nothing but totally impressed.

It's intersting that some of the best in the business, are not classically trained journalists!

Perhaps, Gary....

The reason Greta is such a good interviewer, is because she expects the same thing in an interview that we do.....honesty and integrity, with no agenda (you know, w/o the formal "change the world" training).

I hope he fails, too.

Come on Noel

A member of the media sticking up for and defending a public figure? That's bu11sh1t no matter which party you're talking about.

If this had been Katie Couric and Nancy Pelosi's husband you guys would be all over it -- and rightly so.

Really?

"Sticking up".....more likely said "get your rude butt gone, fool".

Your proposition.....we'd never have heard word one about it.  Politico's just hot because they couldn't catch Todd Palin off balance, furthermore, they got called on their bad behaviour.

I hope he fails, too.

She stated that Todd was her

She stated that Todd was her "guest" at the event. It's not just a matter of someone saying "hey don't be rude". She accompanied him. You can't have it both ways.

One thing I like about newsbusters is they're really good at calling this stuff out. That's why Noel's post here seems out of character for this site.

I see your mind is firmly closed

As your nonsensical post amply demonstrates.

I love how you new posters show up here and moan and groan about what the contributors here post.  Sheesh, it get's old, fast.

So....enough attention for you today.

I hope he fails, too.

twitted palin on this

I asked Palin about this on twitter and she didn't reponse back.

http://twitter.com/A...

What a concept....

"She stated that Todd was her "guest" at the event. It's not just a
matter of someone saying "hey don't be rude". She accompanied him. You
can't have it both ways."

She invited a guest, AND accompanied him.  And stopped political hacks from attacking HER GUEST for political pusposed at a non-political gathering.

heaterman, did you leave your brain in your other pants again?

Exactly. Now if she had said

Exactly. Now if she had said Todd was her invited "target" that would have been different.

HM do you think it is ok

To interview anyone any where then simply skew their word to make them and their families look bad? Because and honest person knows this was the intention.

My Gov. thinks I am dangerous, so be careful

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

Todd Palin is NOT a "public

Todd Palin is NOT a "public figure".

Get that through your head.  He is the husband of the Governor of Alaska.

Can the media also ambush the spouse of every other political figure in a social setting then?

They might say "Wow, that sucks!"  But at least they'll say "Wow!"  -Duff Goldman, the Ace of Cakes

Interesting question. I

Interesting question. I would tend to think that spouses are public figures, too.

SOCIAL event

What part of "social event" don't you understand?

HM, that crap your spewing won't wash here

but feel to try the Puffington Post or Daily KOSinostra.  Greta did zero wrong and the MSM fools you're talking about do it with no shame.  You're like a one legged man in a butt bicking contest, i.e. no leg to stand on.

Well...I can see groupthink

Well...I can see groupthink has a firm hold here. She's doing the same thing as MSM hacks do, but because she's apparently conservative enough, and she's sticking up for Todd, then it's suddenly okay?

Oh

I noticed your brain cell is lonely.

Pick up the phone and let the poor thing listen to a dial tone instead of your voice.

It will become instantly smarter for the experience.

Re Greta

Greta did the right thing in this case, as anyone in the media should have done. Do we refer to CNN's talking heads as the 'handlers' of CNN's glitterati guests? She was simply pointing out incorrect protocol and bad manners.

On the other hand, I find Greta's obsession with the Palins a little creepy, a little too 'Natalee Holloway'. Greta latches onto things like a bulldog and plays them far past their use-by date. One could argue that she drives the Palinmania to some extent, and the Palinmania pushes the PDS to ever-higher levels. Greta scored the first interview with Bristol, which lit up PDS all over again and led to the interviews with the punk father of the baby.

MSM - Hankie Holding Panty Wearers

I think the only requirement to be a political reporter these days (if you're male) is that you have to find women's underwear big enough to fit.

Who the hell cares if Politico is upset?

Oh yes! Can you imagine if

Oh yes! Can you imagine if anybody from the MSM even remotely appeared to be carrying the water for Pelosi, Reid, Obama, Biden, Schuster, Dodd, (my fingers are tiring), etc?  That would really be something to be investigated by the press, huh?

Hey, the Kettle just called and said, "Same to you!"

No need to imagine

The MSM Gunga Dins are doing it everyday.

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." Mark Twain

She handled his business - but she's no handler!

Boy, Noel Sheppard sure blew the doors off THIS story - Palin was a GUEST of Van Susteren - they're close friends, you know, and when the press tried to ask the first dude question, Van Susteren ran interference - but she wasn't acting as a handler - just a close friend! because that's what FRIENDS do - they RUN INTERFERENCE on a public figure to make sure he's not a stupid as his wife when it comes to media quotes...

Holy cow... I just realized

Holy cow... I just realized I could see right straight through your head from my kitchen window.

SoL

This is what happens when Noel leaves the back gate unlatched. All types stumble/slither in. Actually, I've been seeing alot more lately.

Time to call Orkin.

Iggy

NB must have renewed their Orkin contract, because there have been quite a number of exterminations in the last week.

Someone call an exterminator? ;-)

What part of guest dont you understand?Maybe you dont feel responsible for a guest but many do.

Considering the amount of cheap shots and lies that the media has taken at the Palins Greta did the right thing.Just a note:Todd isnt running for office.I dont remember him makeing speeches either.

Trashing the Palins...

Is the Liberal media's favorite bloodsport. No member of the Palin family is safe from the Liberal media's savage attacks.

That Greta has alot of spunk putting herself between the Palins and the deranged Liberal stalkerazi.

After this recent

After this recent Piper/lemonade stand thing, if the Palins have any pets they, too, should stay low for awhile.

We have the entire mainstream media handling and protecting

the President while doing his job. We have ONE reporter standing up for a PRIVATE citizen at a dinner and all hell breaks out. Unbelievable!

That high-pitched scream you hear is the troll under my heel.

IMHO, Greta is the best

IMHO, Greta is the best interviewer in news media period!

She's one of the very few who actually let the guest answer a question without interupting them. I absolutely cannot stand O'Reilly...terrible interviewer. His huge ego has him constantly intrupting his guests.

Greta Rocks!

Still trying to figure out

Still trying to figure out what the hell Ludacris was doing there...

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

Greta is one of the few...

real journalists left on TV. She has the investigative reporter instinct/smarts and seems incredibly fair to me. From what I have seen of her regarding the Palins (and all she has observed firsthand), her analysis of the situation is quite credible to me.
