Any measure that we look at shows Al Gore's losing at the moment. The public is just not that concerned.
So said Gallup Poll editor Frank Newport about the Nobel Laureate's campaign to convince Americans that man's carbon dioxide emissions are destroying the planet.
As reported by U.S. News & World Report's Paul Bedard at his Washington Whispers blog Tuesday:
Let's hope he's right:He admits that it's counterintuitive, but Gallup Poll Editor Frank Newport says he sees no evidence that Al Gore's campaign against global warming is winning. "It's just not caught on," says Newport. "They have failed." Or, more bluntly: "Any measure that we look at shows Al Gore's losing at the moment. The public is just not that concerned." What the public is worried about: the economy. Newport says the economy trumps the environment right now, a strong indicator that President Obama's bid to put a cap-and-trade pollution regime into operation isn't likely to be politically popular.
"It's Al Gore's greatest frustration," says Newport. "We seem less concerned than more about global warming over the years. . . . Despite the movies and publicity and all that, we're just not seeing it take off with the American public. And that was occurring even before the latest economic recession."
He adds: "As Al Gore I think would say, the greatest challenge facing humanity . . . has failed to show up in our data."
Of course, this isn't really surprising, for if you look at the data, carbon dioxide doesn't show up as a cause of global warming -- but don't tell the Nobel Laureate who got a D in his natural sciences course at Harvard that.

May 5, 2009 - 16:15 ET by winston smithThe public indifference to Global Warming and all its attendant threats and scare stories has more to do with what they see from the people who are doing that promote all the hysteria in the first place. Take Al Gore for example, promoting the idea that man's excesses have caused catastrophic changes in the earth's atmosphere and climate to the extent that we all must become stewards of our planet and cut back on energy consumption, take steps to reduce greenhouse gases, reduce our "carbon footprint". And then you look at the lifestyle Al Gore leads, with his 3 mansions, his private jet trips, living comfortably off his Oxi oil stocks. Maybe it's time for Gore to finally begin practising what he preaches And of course, Hollywood celebrities who essentially parrot every word Gore preaches about Global Warming are even worse examples of hypocrisy with their excessive jetsetting lifestyles, mansions, limos, sportscars, wardrobes, etc. It's a complete joke to listen to these people with their sanctimonious lectures about why the rest of us have to sacrifice to the extreme and then they fly off to France in a private jet to party or stay in their chateau for a week or three. Until the GW adherents begin adjusting their own excessive lifestyles to conform to the demands and sacrifices they expect everyone else to make, the public will remain unconvinced and indifferent.

The reason I like stories
May 5, 2009 - 20:29 ET by acumenThe reason I like stories like this is it demonstrates the possibility that the establishment media is losing its cherished position of influence. After years of trumpeting anthropological global warming propaganda by all outlets of the mass media it is hard to imagine man-made global warming is not one of the top concerns of the public.
Then considering the additional influence of America's educators it is amazing the public is (at the least) ambivalent concerning supposed man-made global warming.
Maybe now the establishment media will consider investigating reports of questionable activies by climate scientists such as this one at the University of Albany which not only involves a "star" scientist engaging in scientific fraud but the University covering up this fraudulent activity. This story has it all (fraud, whistle-blower colleague, institutional cover-up, millions in wasted taxpayer money, etc, etc) except one remaining objective journalist in the establishment media to do the reporting.

I take a broader view on pollution and fossil fuel consumption anyway.
The internal rot of major urban centers that occurred post haste due to the wonderful Great Society programs caused many hitherto content city dwellers to get the hell out (away from the crime, the crumbling buildings, the drugs, the crime, the lousy schools, the gangs, etc.) of those cities and move into the suburbs.
More land 'developed', more roads, longer commutes and so on. And when many of the remaining denizens of said cesspools could no longer stand it themselves, they moved into the older suburbs-causing many to move even further away and so on, because the new city refugees insisted on bringing their baggage with them.
No matter how far away you move, though, housing projects, anti-gang/drug task forces, 'social programs', trailer parks, etc. are sure to follow close behind. And in that wake are more miles of highway, more miles you have to drive to get to work, more traffic with the wasteful idling that goes along with it.

May 6, 2009 - 01:37 ET by nofateAbsolutely. Informed people have known for a long time that CO2 is not a driver of climate change- there is too much information (h/t upcountrywater) out there refuting that notion. Yet there seems to be a crescendo of propaganda pushing that point of view, especially among the gullible younger set. But, there is political hay to be made, as well as big bucks, by pushing the man made global warming due to CO2 agenda. For a really cool, graphic demonstration of why it is utter lunacy to think that man has even the remotest influence on the fate of the earth, check out this link and scroll only to the first picture, then wait- it will slowly change. Picture the size of man in relation to the earth before you bring it up.
On the other hand, in the real science world, where "when a hypothesis is false, new experiments and observations will tend to quarrel with it, but with a good theory the reverse is true. It looks better and better as the facts become more exactly known", the work of Henrik Svensmark is looking better and better as more facts are collected. Just this paragraph alone, from "The Chilling Stars" by Henrik Svensmark and Nigel Calder, is enough to warm the heart of any true global warming denier:
At a meeing of colleagues later that year, it was suggested that Svensmark's work was "dangerous"! Suggesting that low solar activity allowed increased cosmic rays to reach earth, thereby increasing low level cloud cover. By the increased reflectivity of that low level cloud cover, global cooling would ensue. This was somehow "dangerous". This man's work has not gotten the recognition it deserves, because, unfortunately, in the MSM, the debate is over, because Gore says it is. Fortunately, it is becoming more widely known, and as things cool off during this cycle, it will hopefully get more of the recognition it deserves.
Here are just a few links to information on Svensmark and his work, besides the above mentioned book:
Cosmic Ray Flux and Neutron monitors suggest we may not have hit solar minimum yet
Correlation demonstrated between cosmic rays and temperature of the stratosphere
State of the Sun for year end 2008: all’s quiet on the solar front - too quiet
Cosmoclimatology: a new theory emerges
It is so frustrating for all of us to know that this "CO2 is driving climate change" stuff is bogus and is only being driven by power hungry politicians the worl over, feeding off the media generated mass hysteria. But we slog on.

The video about Svensmark is very well done.
