Stewart probably forgot that Truman was Democrat, so that means he couldn't have done anything wrong (not that I personally think Truman did anything wrong in regard to Hiroshima or Nagasaki, mind you).

It's just not right to judge these decisions fifty years later. In 1945, the atomic bomb was just a bigger bomb than the last one. There's absolutely no question that FDR would have used it, and Truman rightly did not hesitate. Nuclear weapons then didn't have all the moral posturing that has encumbered them since, just as with nuclear power and nuclear bombs for peaceful use. Any President would have been impeached for not using them. As others have pointed out, the firebombing of Tokyo killed more Japanese than either of the bombs.

The Japanese should also be grateful that we did use them, since more Japanese are alive today because of them. Had a long invasion played out, that would have given the Soviets time to participate. The result would have been a third-world basket case socialist North Japan and a democratic South Japan, perhaps to this day.

In 1945 the USA was tired of war, and peace movements were starting to gain momentum. As our enemies know now, America is not politically capable of a war of over five years or so in duration. There is no certainty that the USA could have sustained a couple more years of war in a political sense. This fact has been swept under the rug in the glory of the quick victory that the atomic bombs brought. FDR was very aware of this, and this is why he kept us out of war as long as possible. 

This debate is easy for the liberals because FDR and Truman are long dead and out of legal jeopardy. If we want to have this discussion, let's talk about Bill Clinton and his bombing of a civilian aspirin factory in Sudan, or his bombing of the former Yugoslavia. The liberals might be a little less willing to discuss war crimes charges against one of their icons that's still around.

And what are the consequences of terrorist attacks - minor little incidents? Are waterboarding a few terrorists and putting a catapillar in a terrorist's cell comparable to dropping an atomic bomb that killed thousands and thousands? If using the atomic bomb doesn't qualify Truman as a war criminal in Stewart's mind, how does a judicious use of enhanced interrogations to thwart terrorist attacks make the Bush administration "war criminals", for pete's sake? Sure he apologized after that boneheaded statement but it goes to the greater root of the problem. Libs like him hate absolution through force. As is said about the Clintons: nothing is a coincidence. Stewart is just another Marxist puppet, and his comment is merely a prelude to the U.S. accepting full blame, making us deserving of same.

The war in Japan was largely orchestrated by FDR-Stalin and their Marxist-Communist gang whose goal was to destroy Japan in order to allow Stalin to march into China. Chiang Kai-shek fought for us all during the war and then the Stalinist propaganda machine turned on him, forcing him and followers to retreat to Formosa (now Taiwan). 

The Soviets didn't even enter the Pacific war until three days AFTER Hiroshima, just in time to dictate the settlement terms after millions died horrible deaths in a war that Stalin would have lost because his country was incompetent at all but lying, stealing, and cheating.

Also, The Daily Worker, a Communist rag, was excited about the nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and wanted more atomic bombs dropped on Japan to destroy the country completely and utterly. Gen. Douglas MacArthur and honest people in the State Department were horrified that we even bombed Japan, which was largely defeated and ready to surrender.

We are the Japan of the 21 century, as only America stands in the way of the conquest of the world by the most evil and murderous of political deviants in centuries: Marxists.

Was this an apology or was it a comedy bit?  In my opinion, it can't be both.  If he were sincere, he wouldn't milk his apology for laughs.

Also, is there a bit of truth hidden in the following quote?:

"...Out loud, on the show..."?  So I guess that means if he had just kept it to himself, it would have been okay.

If you watch the Cliff May debate with Stewart, you see that May gives Steward several chances AFTER Stewart's hideous characterization of Pres. Truman as a 'war criminal' to backtrack, but Stewart just kept digging in and reaffirming his stance. So I doubt this 'apology' is sincere and what we got in the debate was Stewart's true unvarnished anti american leftwing views. (redundancy alert).
