On Thursday, Comedy Central's Jon Stewart apologized for earlier in the week calling former President Harry Truman a war criminal.
As NewsBusters previously reported, Stewart during Tuesday's interview with Foundation for the Defense of Democracies' Clifford May said that Truman should have done an offshore warning of the atomic bomb in 1945 before dropping it on Hiroshima, and that not doing so was criminal.
Apparently, Stewart has rethought his position, and said the following on Thursday's "Daily Show" (video embedded below the fold with transcript, vulgarity warning):
| The Daily Show With Jon Stewart | M - Th 11p / 10c | |||
| Harry Truman Was Not a War Criminal | ||||
| ||||
The other night we had on Cliff May. He was on, we were discussing torture, back and forth, very spirited discussion, very enjoyable. And I may have mentioned during the discussion we were having that Harry Truman was a war criminal. And right after saying it, I thought to myself that was dumb. And it was dumb. Stupid in fact. So I shouldn't have said that, and I did. So I say right now, no, I don't believe that to be the case. The atomic bomb, a very complicated decision in the context of a horrific war, and I walk that back because it was in my estimation a stupid thing to say. Which, by the way, as it was coming out of your mouth, you ever do that, where you're saying something, and as it's coming out you're like, "What the f**k, nyah?" And it just sat in there for a couple of days, just sitting going, "No, no, he wasn't, and you should really say that out loud on the show." So I am, right now, and, man, ew. Sorry. And, Warren G. Harding was a [bleeped, unintelligible].
Nicely done, Jon. If only more on your side of the aisle would apologize after making such disgraceful statements.

I'm not convinced
May 1, 2009 - 10:17 ET by QueenMumToo late. The initial statements were honest opinions. When one is faced with controversial questions and there is little time to weigh your words, one usually speaks the truth. Steward believes Truman and Bush are both war criminals. I suspect the powers-that-be are now paying attention to the reaction of the opposition. No viewers - no advertisers - no network.

May 1, 2009 - 10:21 ET by iveseenitallIt was a choice between a million or more deaths and a hundred thousand. Truman showed the courage Barry et.al will never possess. May 1, 2009 - 10:28 ET by expatriotTruman asked for the surrender of Japan and warned that if Japan did not surrender he would use a weapon never seen before. He was blown off the first time but surrender was extended after the second bomb. The second bomb was also forecast.

Harry S. Truman
May 1, 2009 - 11:45 ET by rpeeler42I agree. I believe that President Truman is one of our greatest Presidents. President Rossevelt, even though, obviously very ill, did not see any need to make sure his Vice-President(Truman) was totally read-in on all the issues concerning WWII. FDR did not even tell President Truman about the Manhatten Project-the atomic bomb development project.

May 1, 2009 - 11:28 ET by GalvanicI agree. Democrats from his handlers to the White House probably "reminded" him of the fact after that show. If Nixon or Reagan had ordered the dropping of the A-bomb in WW2, Stewart would still consider them war criminals.

Re Truman
May 1, 2009 - 10:51 ET by slickwillie2001It's just not right to judge these decisions fifty years later. In 1945, the atomic bomb was just a bigger bomb than the last one. There's absolutely no question that FDR would have used it, and Truman rightly did not hesitate. Nuclear weapons then didn't have all the moral posturing that has encumbered them since, just as with nuclear power and nuclear bombs for peaceful use. Any President would have been impeached for not using them. As others have pointed out, the firebombing of Tokyo killed more Japanese than either of the bombs.
The Japanese should also be grateful that we did use them, since more Japanese are alive today because of them. Had a long invasion played out, that would have given the Soviets time to participate. The result would have been a third-world basket case socialist North Japan and a democratic South Japan, perhaps to this day.
In 1945 the USA was tired of war, and peace movements were starting to gain momentum. As our enemies know now, America is not politically capable of a war of over five years or so in duration. There is no certainty that the USA could have sustained a couple more years of war in a political sense. This fact has been swept under the rug in the glory of the quick victory that the atomic bombs brought. FDR was very aware of this, and this is why he kept us out of war as long as possible.
This debate is easy for the liberals because FDR and Truman are long dead and out of legal jeopardy. If we want to have this discussion, let's talk about Bill Clinton and his bombing of a civilian aspirin factory in Sudan, or his bombing of the former Yugoslavia. The liberals might be a little less willing to discuss war crimes charges against one of their icons that's still around.

May 1, 2009 - 13:53 ET by ahusserthat the invasion of mainland Japan would have cost us and allies over a million casualties. The Marine Corp was pretty much destroyed after Okinawa. If our casualties were a million then the Japanese civialian and military casualties on the mainland would have approached 10 million. The Atomic Bomb was just one bomb with one bomber instead of a hundred bombers with thousands of incendiary bombs (Tokyo, Hamburg, Dresden anyone?). What is the difference. It ended the war. Don't you just love revisionist hisory. With the every year protests at the Air and Space Museum to the controversial 'notes' on the Enola Gay exhibit several years ago.

And what are the consequences of terrorist attacks - minor little incidents? Are waterboarding a few terrorists and putting a catapillar in a terrorist's cell comparable to dropping an atomic bomb that killed thousands and thousands? If using the atomic bomb doesn't qualify Truman as a war criminal in Stewart's mind, how does a judicious use of enhanced interrogations to thwart terrorist attacks make the Bush administration "war criminals", for pete's sake? I think the answer is: really grotesque and thoughtless partisan politics.

Stewart receives half-kudos
May 3, 2009 - 07:31 ET by Roger the ShrubberStewart receives half-kudos for his half-sincere apology. Watching his apology made me wonder about three things:
1. Was he sincere? Or was he shamed into it by being such an obvious dumbass, and taken to school by pretty everybody to the right of Mao? Or could it have been because he forgot that the only atomic bomb ever dropped was dropped by a Democrat, and that is embarrassing for his handlers?
2. How serious can ANYBODY take this guy, when he blurts out dumbass statement like this? All those whiny little NYU libs in the audience (and whiny 20-something libs out in Comedy Central land) consider this guy to be a dispenser of news, and if this guy cannot keep his sh*t together during a debate and cannot keep simple historical facts straight, is it no wonder he have a socialist douche in the White House?
3. Speaking of whiny, 20-something NYU liberals, the audience thought it was all a joke. It was funny-time with Jon Stewart! At least, when Stewart originally made that brilliant "war criminal" statement, the gasping from the audience was loud, so let's give that audience extra pudding tonight for having more than a brain stem.

Stewart a useful idiot
May 1, 2009 - 14:23 ET by j17ghsAs is said about the Clintons: nothing is a coincidence. Stewart is just another Marxist puppet, and his comment is merely a prelude to the U.S. accepting full blame, making us deserving of same.
The war in Japan was largely orchestrated by FDR-Stalin and their Marxist-Communist gang whose goal was to destroy Japan in order to allow Stalin to march into China. Chiang Kai-shek fought for us all during the war and then the Stalinist propaganda machine turned on him, forcing him and followers to retreat to Formosa (now Taiwan).
The Soviets didn't even enter the Pacific war until three days AFTER Hiroshima, just in time to dictate the settlement terms after millions died horrible deaths in a war that Stalin would have lost because his country was incompetent at all but lying, stealing, and cheating.
Also, The Daily Worker, a Communist rag, was excited about the nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and wanted more atomic bombs dropped on Japan to destroy the country completely and utterly. Gen. Douglas MacArthur and honest people in the State Department were horrified that we even bombed Japan, which was largely defeated and ready to surrender.
We are the Japan of the 21 century, as only America stands in the way of the conquest of the world by the most evil and murderous of political deviants in centuries: Marxists.

May 1, 2009 - 14:59 ET by ahusserThe are just two sides of the same coin (whackos that is). However he has one point correct FDR was starting to seriously suck up to Stalin at the expense of Churchill. I chalk that one up to he being a very sick man.

I agree with you,
May 1, 2009 - 15:18 ET by JerI agree with you, ahusser--on all points. However, I do think that during that stage of the war, FDR--not knowing the A-bomb would prove to be such a spectacularly decisive weapon--was making an extraordinary effort to induce Stalin to open a second front against the Japanese. Of course, the flip side would have been the extension of Soviet influencce in Japan's post-war geopolitcal framework.
Anyway, a combination of fulfilling that objective, as well as his declining health, resulted in over-generous concessions by FDR at Yalta.

May 1, 2009 - 15:28 ET by Rush Fantoday. It is the letter written by Andrew C. McCarthy, former assistant U.S. attorney and a deputy U.S. marshal, that he sent today to Attorney General of the United States Eric Holder. In the letter Mr. McCarthy declines to participate in a meeting of the President’s Task Force on Detention Policy.
Additionally, Andrew McCarthy outlines his reasons for declining to meet with the President’s Detention Policy Task Force in an article he has written for the National Review titled: Saying No to Justice.

By the way, Truman is not just a criminal. He could be the Devil if compared to Bush based on the Democrats' standard.
Sad, Truman was one of the Democrats.
Stewart milks his "apology" for laughs.
May 2, 2009 - 05:56 ET by Ted ClarkeWas this an apology or was it a comedy bit? In my opinion, it can't be both. If he were sincere, he wouldn't milk his apology for laughs.
Also, is there a bit of truth hidden in the following quote?:
"No, no, he wasn't [a war criminal], and you shouldn't really say that out loud on the show."
"...Out loud, on the show..."? So I guess that means if he had just kept it to himself, it would have been okay.
I'm nitpicking, I know. But Truman's no war criminal...period.
A Typical Liberal CYA Apology
May 2, 2009 - 10:24 ET by rammingspeedJon Stewart's mia culpa was more a mia a**hole, which is typical when a liberal is forced to say that they were wrong, when they were wrong.
Stewart's assertion that Truman was a war criminal shows how hatefilled and vicious the American Left is. Their compulsion to shout out any insult that comes to mind when condemning the people they hate is a stern warning for us. This man, and the others of his ilk, are dangerous. He'll say anything he can to influence people to drive America further down the left lane - a horrible fate that must be fought against.
TRUMAN WAS A DEM
May 2, 2009 - 13:02 ET by NortoNEED WE SAY MORE? Jon dissed a dem!
Abutom,TRUMAN WAS A BRILLIANT SOLDIER,
May 2, 2009 - 13:07 ET by NortoI HAD FORGOTTEN, AND I READ THE BOOK!
THIS MAKES jon's comment even worse and I will bet that is why he "apologized."
If you watch the Cliff May
May 2, 2009 - 17:00 ET by eaglewingz08If you watch the Cliff May debate with Stewart, you see that May gives Steward several chances AFTER Stewart's hideous characterization of Pres. Truman as a 'war criminal' to backtrack, but Stewart just kept digging in and reaffirming his stance. So I doubt this 'apology' is sincere and what we got in the debate was Stewart's true unvarnished anti american leftwing views. (redundancy alert).
The PJTV takedown of Stewart, should go viral on youtube. It is a classic and should be seen by everyone who have had the misfortune to be miseducated by libtard teachers and professors.
Rule No.1 for survival of the human species: NEVER use a nuke!
June 5, 2009 - 09:22 ET by gift.assassinTruman or no Truman, the widely-accepted-outside-America fact that nuking 2 Japanese cities was a war crime became obvious long before the 21st century. If you could save lives by nuking civilians to death and generations of deformity, why didn't you end the Cold War that way? If the US had dropped an atom bomb on a Japanese fleet, that would have been a tactical war victory. Dropping one on hundreds of thousands of people who had little if anything to do with the decision to attack Pearl Harbor, that is most definitely a war crime!
