Sesno Bashes Fox's Tea Party Coverage, Defends Olbermann and Roesgen

In today's You've Got To Be Kidding Me moment, former CNN personality Frank Sesno scolded Fox News for its coverage of last week's Tea Parties while defending the disgraceful behavior of Keith Olbermann and Susan Roesgen.

This from a man who is now a professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University.

Appearing on CNN's "Reliable Sources," this was Sesno's opinion of the Tea Party involvement of Fox News's Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck (file photo):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

It's fine from a First Amendment point of view. They've got that right. It's not fine from a journalistic point of view...Because that's not our job. Our job is not to use our podium and our platform and our television camera to tell people what they should be thinking and doing. Our job should be to tell them what's happening out there and then they decide what to do.

Yet, moments later when host Howard Kurtz played a clip of Susan Roesgen's deplorable behavior at the Chicago Tea Party, Sesno responded:

She was debating him, which is a problem. On the other hand -- and I've been there, OK? You're on live television, you have somebody who's throwing, you know, firebombs at the camera, and you cannot just let that go unchallenged.

Words like "fascist" are very serious words. And your responsibility as a journalist, it seems to me, to be out there, is to challenge that and draw that person out. It doesn't mean getting into a debating contest with him. And maybe she stepped over the line with that, but that's an important thing to call people out on.

Hmmm. So, the responsibility of a CNN "journalist" is to challenge and call people out for their opinions. BUT, a Fox News "journalist" should not use his or her podium, platform, and television camera to tell people what they should be thinking and doing.

Got that?

But there's more, for when Kurtz brought up Janeane Garofalo's disgusting rant on MSNBC's "Countdown" Thursday, he asked Sesno if host Keith Olbermann should have called out Garofalo for her comments. Readers are encouraged to brace themselves for Sesno's next hypocrisy:

Should be challenged. I mean, again -- but it depends what the show is. All right? I mean, Keith Olbermann is Keith Olbermann. I mean, he's going to approach this the way he should.

Amazing. So Roesgen was right to challenge and draw out folks at the Chicago Tea Party, but Olbermann gets a pass with Garofalo because he's Olbermann.

Meanwhile, Beck and Hannity clearly overstepped journalistic boundaries.

Thanks for straightening that out for us, Professor.

And that concludes today's lesson on media and public affairs.

Any questions?

ITS "SILENT SYMBOL" TIME!

Couldn't attend the tea parties as I was on the road, but did hang a
tea bag off of my inside mirror.

Let the stupid Libs keep denigrating and
trashing us. It's almost sad, but it is all they know how to do. They
obviously cannot debate us, because even they know, deep down, that
their ideas don't work and socialism has been a total failure
everywhere it is tried. --

ITS MY POSITION THAT...the 60 million voters minimum should ALL hang a family size teabag from their inside mirror(s)...

silent symbols are an important and useful start in creating national awareness...to keep our "eyes on the ball"...and "buck up" each other as the socialists prepare a Budget that triples the national debt.

Tea bags come in family sizes?  What, the size of a pillow?

AFClone,

I believe there are larger-size tea bags for making pitchers of iced-tea. Roughly the size of a $ bill folded in half.

I assume that's what was meant by "family size."

Sun Tea

I remember Mom making sun tea on the porch when I was young...she just put several bags in so this whole concept of one tea bag for a family confuses me.

Anyway, what's a dollar bill?  I haven't seen one since November...all I have is change.

AF...  Yeah..I'm one of

AF...

Yeah..I'm one of those mom's who still do that to this day when it's global warming out.

They have come out with the family sized tea-bags IJ was describing...quite a few years ago now...I still stick to the tried and true that I am used to...but if one is going to hang it from mirror in vehicle...I do like the family size idea.

Oops, can't hang a tea bag

It will be distracting the driver....our nanny state won't allow it.  (yeah, I live in California...can't drive and chew gum out here...multitasking is bad...also can't run the state and balance the budget but that is a whole other subject)

Besides that we may all be pulled over and profiled as right-wing terrorists if we hang one of those dangerous weapons from our mirrors....and if we have gun-racks...why were off to the hoosegow..

Evening BT

Now you know that half the pickup trucks around this part of the country have gun racks in the back window, so, yeah we all will be pulled over and shown to the county lock up...

Thats okay, I would rather be known as a Right Wing Terroist than not.....

Hey FedUp... One thing

Hey FedUp...

One thing about Big Sky Country...the leftists haven't taken completely over the voters here....if that happened here...there would be hell to pay...Baucus and Tester the phonies they are very well know it...hence their support for the 2nd Amendment...if the state was swaying the other way and they knew it on this issue...they would be right with the leftist crowd...I watch their votes and floor speeches....too bad many don't when it comes to the true colors of their congress-critters.

Sad part of all of this is...I have watched all the western states being taken over by the left that are leaving the states they are miserable with for the most part when it comes to regulations and taxes....yet they vote for the same type of critters when they come here and proceed to tell us what to do...etc etc.

You are so correct in your statement about our to Dem Critters voting the way they do.  They know that they would be cut off at the knee if they dared to vote any other way! Have been wondering how many Conceled permits have been issued in just this county alone since last November.

Hope you enjoyed your day Buddy!

Btw..regarding the signs at the Tea Party slides/vids I saw in Missoula, Kalispell and a few other towns there were some beside the 2nd Amendment issue that had to do with the EPA and rural communities having to use their wood stoves ...my husband works for the school district, they have an EPA wood stove that is a junk, the so-called gizmo that is suppose to stop all the so-called pollution is a joke, it is a long story but I saw it myself...I tell you, they are treading on thin ice anymore...

BT - July 4 teaparty planning already started

We've already been working on organization and decentralization to get our conservative word out to more.  We had 5,000 in Dallas last Wednesday.  Our goal is for 15,000-20,000 on the 4th.  Got some great things planned!  Also, we did not let any politicians speak!  It is time for Washington to hear from the people...and tremble!  Fear the Teaparty!!!

the media is getting

nervous.  The media is seeing that the American people  are finally seeing the light that the media is a boot-licking bu** kissing entity of the obama administration.  The people are finally waking up to the fact that what is being presented, for the most part is not news but what the media wants us to hear and wants us to believe.  This is part of the obama agenda. Just like the pravda in Russia, most of the media is brainwashing those that are not intelligent enough (or too lazy) to think on their own and follow them down the hole of hell to obama's socialism and communism.

I say yes...

I say yes and she Sesno, I say why and she says "I don't know."

The Beatles had Sesno pegged way back when, he just don't know jack!

Good at supporting those that pay him

It looks like he's as usual good at supporting those that pay him and going after their competitors.  Samething with Howie Kurtz IMO.  He'll go after anyone but CNN and the Washington Post and he especially likes to go after Fox, the Washington Times and CNBC hosts that don't toe the liberal line of NBC.

Yeah I caught the show this

Yeah I caught the show this morning...

Sesno is Sesno... like I said to my husband...I sure as heck haven't missed him one iota on CNN...not that I watch it that much anymore anyway.

Just par for the course...

What disappointed me was Howie baby not showing the confrontation with Susan and Norman when they did the clip. I'm about ready to quit watching this show too.

Doubling down on stupid is not a particularly good idea. ~Andrew Breitbart

You're right.  He should

You're right.  He should have shown the clip and then asked Sesno if Roesgen was"drawing him out" or challenging him.

There's a big difference between drawing someone out and being confrontational and hostile, which of course Roesgen didn't like at all when the shoe was on the other foot.  I notice she didn't try to bully the woman who got in her face!

Oh, and by the way, Frank, where were all the journalists "calling people out" on calling George Bush Hitler and worse?

Oh, wait!  That was different, right?  Free speech and "speaking truth to power" right??

These people don't care about their own glaring hypocrisy.

That's a joke

Must be a joke. Otherwise, find out where Sesno went to college and demand a refund.

Every pundit and commentator is doing exactly that, whenever they "analyze" the news. That's what analysis is. It's when you take the event and explain how the viewers should be thinking about the event.

They speak babble, pure empty nonsense, and then congratulate themselves on their brilliance. Journalists have the biggest gap between actual intelligence and their self-perception of their intelligence.

KC, I must point out that

KC, I must point out that you're combining "journalists" with "pundits" and "commentators." They are, or should be, very different things.

Of course, when you let every "reporter" out there work their personal take on an issue into a report, you'll have that problem.

IMO, there are really very few "journalists" left in the MSM. They're almost ALL "commentators," according to  Frank "Says No." Unless, of course, they work for Fox.

He's just another liberal flack, teaching at another liberal college.

Distinctions

Well, to be technical about it, they're all journalists. We just make a distinction between reporters and analysts, but they're all journalists. But I understand (and agree with) what you're saying.

I'm not sure it's all the fault of the reporters. Editors who want to push a point of view only hire subordinates who present the view they know the boss will like. Again, the editors and publishers control the news ... the writers and TV reporters are just the front men. They write what the editors want them to write.

People like Olbermann,

People like Olbermann, Maddow and Roesgen actually believe their views and morals are normal, mainstream and correct. What they never realize is when you hang around sh*t you smell like sh*t.

1)  This is America...no one, no matter of status or level of education is better than anyone else...so to say that you are "disrespectful of my betters" is wrong.  In America, we have no "betters" and it will stay that way if I have any say in the matter.

2)  Your point is valid.  Listening to his drivel for 4 years....I wouldn't have stuck around for a semester so if the students are there for the full 4....they lacked common sense to begin with.

"No one respects the blue collar until their car breaks down [somethin like that]------Larry the cable guy"

That hits the nail on the head.

Professor?

This clown is a "professor". Typical of modern "liberals", logic  obviously is not his strong suit. But speaking out of both sides of his mouth is a technique he has mastered very well. No wonder our kids can't think.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

I thought I saw him on Gilligan's Island

Smart people never solve problems....daring people do.

I think I might finally

I think I might finally understand liberal hypocracy. They don't think but rather feel. If you feel Foxnews is bad than anything they do is bad. So you make an "arguement" that they shouldn't tell people what they should think. Its not really an arguement since they don't back up the statement that Foxnews actually told anyone what to think or even why they shouldn't advocate positions on their programs. Now he likes CNN and Olbermann so he finds a duty on their part to not let others get away with their "evil" or "harsh" opinions. He feels bad about those opinions so anything is justified even the behavior he just said was bad when discussing Foxnews. When you aren't thinking and merely feeling the Sesno hypocracy makes more sense.

Liberals gave up debating and using facts and argumentation long ago. Now they use judgmental statesments and name calling as a substitute for debate. It has been suprisingly successful in a land of uneducated non-critical thinking public. See Barack Obama.

Keith Olbermann is Keith

Keith Olbermann is Keith Olbermann. I mean, he's going to approach this the way he should.

Amazing.

I guess that means that Olbermann doesn't have to be held to any standards of journalism?

"The way he should..."? He should? Olbermann gets to devise whatever standards he wishes?

I'm stunned at these arguments he's posing.

Good thing you're not sitting in Prof. Sesno's lecture hall ;-)

In short: CNN=Good/Fox News=Bad.

"You're on live television, you have somebody who's
throwing, you know, firebombs at the camera, and
you cannot just let that go unchallenged."

Firebombs?  If you go to the clip, "Proffessor," any normal person can see one poor guy was trying to answer a question with a quote from Abraham Lincoln.  After six seconds of speaking (a life time in your world) he was crazily shouted out with Democratic talking points by  Roesgen.   How does bringing Lincoln into the discourse qualify  as bomb throwing?  Obvious answer:  When it's coming out of the mouth of a conservative.

What an idiot!

lol. These people are

lol. These people are hilarious.

do they really believe what they are saying??

I doubt it. They know they have become the Obama State Media.

Beliefs

GeronL:

What "liberals" (wrongfully) believe is that they have the high moral ground ---which justifies ANYTHING they say or do. The end always justifies the means for a "liberal". Moreover, they are relativists--- nothing is right or wrong but what they say is right or wrong. Twisted logic? You bet. Hypocritical? You bet. But that is who they are--- the enemies of truth and of actual freedom of thought. They are the enemy within and the more you understand them, the better for you to deal with them.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

I Missed This Live!

I had to go to the CNN website to see how Kurtz was going to handle this.  To me, and I'll admit I'm partisan, Kurtz seems to put his show together, in such a way as to find someone that will justify the poor journalism and then someone that won't be too critical of it.  The beauty of that, from his standpoint is, he can say he presented a fair picture of it.  Amanda Carpenter was way too kind on Roesgen, if there was a penalty for journalistic malpractice, Roesgen should have been tried, convicted, and fined for her act and yet CNN was able to find a professor of the media that thought it was just fine.

You have to laugh at this stuff.  The liberal media has put themselves in the position of defending their conduct, almost on a weekly basis.  In cases like this, they have to go through such contortions that you wonder if they'll ever be able to get straight again.  This all started with the Clinton thing, where the liberals networks (and the Democratic Party) felt they had to defend the indefensible because they didn't want the Republicans to win.  This, in turn, led to their attempt to support John Kerry in 2004, which even the liberal media had a hard time doing; but they totally earned their stripes in 2006 and 2008.

So, as CNN sinks to even lower levels in the ratings war, when will they cry no mas and attempt to get back to doing the news the way it should be done and get rid of the political hacks like Carville and Begala and get some real journalists in there.

As an aside, I wonder if it will ever get out why Fox News didn't hire Roesgen?  Perhaps she just wasn't fair and balanced enough for them?  Obviously she was for CNN and now we know why.

Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.

Creds?

Roesgen apparently never studied journalism in college as her CNN bio says she went to a college, Montana State, that never offered it as a course or as a major. She majored in English as I recall.

Of course, this is of little consequence to CNN, whose leading "journalist" was a history major in a New York State college.

Also interesting to note that she applied twice to Faux News and was turned down.

Professor Sesno teaches a course at George Washington University

that has this description:

Advanced techniques in writing, reporting, producing, and editing long-form television documentaries, including analysis of the techniques of propaganda and rhetoric used in film and television to visualize political ideology.

Sesno is also the creator of Planet Forward, that is both a PBS Special that aired on April 15 and a website. In an article at cleantechnica.com titled Welcome To Planet Forward: From Your Lens To The White House Gates Sesno describes Planet Forward as:

"A revolution in technology and green jobs to reduce carbon emissions, deal with climate change and improve our security. A revolution in the energy marketplace to knock the oil-igarchs around the world down a notch. Coincidentally, this is the bottom line of Barack Obama’s hugely ambitious energy program. And it’s what citizens and experts alike weigh in on here at Planet Forward."

------------------

So "Professor" Sesno is just another liberal "journalist" who has joined the ranks of academia in order to indoctrinate the next generation of journalist and students in false liberal propaganda.

The Planet Forward website links to another contributor Public Agenda. Public Agenda claims that:

For over 30 years, Public Agenda has been providing unbiased and unparalleled research that bridges the gap between American leaders and what the public really thinks about issues ranging from education to foreign policy to immigration to religion and civility in American life. Nonpartisan and nonprofit, Public Agenda was founded by social scientist and author Daniel Yankelovich and former Secretary of State Cyrus Vance in 1975. Public Agenda's two-fold mission is to help:

1)American leaders better understand the public's point of view.
2)Citizens know more about critical policy issues so they can make thoughtful, informed decisions.

--------------------------

I noticed that the Public Agenda website offers "Objective Tools for Journalist" including "help when you're in a hurry to find an expert to interview
as you zero in on various subjects."
What do you want to bet that they are Liberal "experts." All of this stinks of the liberal agenda. By the way, Cyrus Vance was Secretary of State under Jimmy Carter , and Daniel Yankelovich has contributed ONLY to Democrats.

This is how liberals indoctrinate the uneducated, the illiterate, and the uninformed. These are the citizens who elected Barack Obama.

In my opinion, what the Tea Parties really revealed this week is that most of the national media view this as a type of civil war if you will.  It's a us against them thing.  I knew there would be bias, but I could not believe just how extreme that bias was this week.

There are no guns a blazing.  No death toll from battle, but I really do believe that for most of the national media is this their civil war.

civil war

Do you think it is just the media? I think it is the whole country.

"Nearly Nobody's News"

Now I'm really scared!

"Our job is not to use our podium and our platform and our television camera to tell people what they should be thinking and doing." - Frank Sesno, professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University

I think this is the most frightening quote from the article. How can this man utter this statement without gagging? This is the exact opposite of what he supports MSNBC and CNN for doing.

Somebody check me on this, some years ago Rush Limbaugh gave a speach at a school of journalism somewhere, he supposedly asked the audience "Who is here to change the world?". Over half the hands shot up and Rush is supposed to have said "Then you are in the wrong profession!".

I'll look for it, but maybe somebody can confirm this as well?

Thanks

JA - your first sentence is almost word for word what

Katie Couric said in a Parade article right before she took her evening spot...and which is why we NEVER watched her (except for that one night when Rush was on ;-)

How DARE they have the AUDACITY to think THEY should tell US what to think...the saddest part is I really believe they consider us so far beneath them that they think they must!

Begin boycotting CNN and MSNBC advertisers

What if we began to flood MSNBC and CNNs advertisers with emails letting them know that we will not be purchasing any of their products as long as they continue to advertise on channels that put this sort of garbage on television at anytime during the day when impressionable young children could be watching?

I wonder if the executives that work for these companies know what it is these immature punks on MSNBC and CNN are saying online: and they are paying for it.

Would this do any good??
