After getting smacked around by Fox News's Megyn Kelly Monday, liberal talker Bill Press went on WOR radio's Steve Malzberg Show and accidentally exposed his real goal in supporting a re-enactment of the Fairness Doctrine: he wants to be heard.
In fact, he also wants the Fairness Doctrine back for his own financial gain:
I know why I'm interested in it because I get up every morning at 3:45, I do three hours of talk radio every day from six to nine, that's my life, it's my business, I want to make money at it, and I want to be heard.
Wow. Talk about your inconvenient truths!
Those interested in hearing Press's greedy admission should forward to minute 8:50 of this audio link (relevant section transcribed below the fold):
BILL PRESS: All they're talking about is making sure there's a variety of voices on the radio. God bless America. We're a diverse country, everybody should be heard.
STEVE MALZBERG: We're a free country, and everybody has a right to run the businesses the way they want. But let me ask a question...
PRESS: But wait, when they have public airwaves I own?
MALZBERG: Then let me ask you this question: why doesn't all this apply to television? Why can't I sit next to little Katie Couric and answer my point of view on her point of view and the reporter's point of view as they present their stories?
PRESS: You know what? I'm going to be honest with you. I know nothing about the television licenses.
MALZBERG: C'mon, you never watch news?
PRESS: No, no. I know nothing about television licenses. I'm a talk radio host...
MALZBERG: It's the airwaves though, not cable, but the CBS, NBC, ABC, same license.
PRESS: You can make any argument you want. I know nothing about how television works even though I worked in it most of my life.
Imagine that. He knows nothing about how television works even though he's worked in it most of his life. Yet, alhough he's only been involved in radio since September 2005, he's an expert on how those licenses work.
Isn't that convenient?
MALZBERG: But Bill, that's the airwaves, too, not cable but the airwaves. It's public, it has to be the same concept.
PRESS: I'm interested in talk radio, that's what I do every day...
MALZBERG: That's all politicians are interested in, very strange.
PRESS: No, it's not strange to me. I know why I'm interested in it because I get up every morning at 3:45, I do three hours of talk radio every day from six to nine, that's my life, it's my business, I want to make money at it, and I want to be heard.
Yes. He wants to be heard, and make money...and he needs the Fairness Doctrine to ensure that more stations around the country will be required to have program's like his on if they want a talk radio format.
Any questions?

If Bill Press wants to be heard...
February 17, 2009 - 11:45 ET by mizflame98...then maybe he should start saying things that people would actually want to hear. That way he gets more listeners, his ratings will go up, and he can keep his job. What a novel idea.

Radio Left Bailout
February 17, 2009 - 12:25 ET by SeftonThis is the Left's version of their radio bailout.

February 17, 2009 - 12:28 ET by deerjerkydaveI don't understand these politicians who say that the Fairness Doctrine is about being heard. Are they saying that if I want to hear or read liberalism being preached in America that I can't find it? Everybody sees through this lie except the Maxine Waters of the world.
Conservatives have radio, liberals have television. I guess if they put the fairness doctrine into place, Rush and Hannity will just relabel their shows as "unbiased news programs." The liberal media get away with being liberal by doing the same.

Strategies
February 17, 2009 - 13:31 ET by jdubyaPerhaps if Mr. Press truly wants to be heard and to make money on the radio circuit, he may want to change his marketing strategies.
Most people who listen to the radio, have it running in the background. I know as I am one of them. Most people have it in the background utilize it for noise dampening. Music works for some, talk works for others. I prefer talk as I am tired of hearing "Stairway to Heaven" every hour, on the hour, or some new band's rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" theme with gratuitous rap-crap shoved in it. That is to say, I have the radio on while I am working, or better yet, producing things that make things that make the things that people buy. I am one cog on one wheel that is part of the dynamic engine of capitalism.
Mr. Press provides a dull themed drone of whining and finger pointing. Most of the "conservative" radio hosts have a theme, provide guests of differing flavors, and allow the callers to challenge or support the topic. Sometimes...sometimes they even change the subject and move into a new area of dialogue. I truly believe that most Americans like a little sponteneity and flavor in discussions. As with Mr. Press and similar ilk, there is a topic with like-minded (same affiliation guests) and supported by same-minded callers.
I say this because I have listened to these so-called "liberal" shows and for the most part, they are all the same. The callers all seem to support the topic, or if they do not, suddenly and mysteriously (and magically) become changed and sway a new opinion and new understanding of the world around them. Incredible (or incredulous). In short, most of the liberal talk radio is BS or truly hate filled. (How many times do you hear an actual conservative getting bleeped, wishing someone ill, or out right lying on a topic you are familiar with?)
If this clown wants to make $$$, and this shows he is seeking for greed and greed only, he needs to provide dialogue that is both stimulating and entertaining. Also, he truly needs to provide both sides of the argument.
Now if he wants to only do this for the money, he is lost and probably should never have entered into this market in the first place.
WTF...
February 17, 2009 - 13:52 ET by danybhoyThe first thing Meygyn Kelly says to Bill Press is, "Hi Bill, You have a little self-interest on this one perhaps?". Then in this interview "...I get up at 3:45, I do 3 hours of talk radio every day from 6 to 9, that's my life, it's my buisness, I want to make money at it, & I want to be heard". That should have been his answer to Kelly, but he still does'nt get it.
Bill Press is a confused man. He wants to make money, that is the classic conservative view of capitalism. The part he does'nt seem to get is you have to EARN IT, you just cannot piss & moan about not being heard when the people don't want to listen to what you say. I go into BestBuy to buy CDs, I go pick out what I want, it's freedom of choice. You can't make me buy a Springsteen CD when I'm looking for Iron Maiden. They put out their music, we decide to listen or not. The choice is our's.
Bill Press has the right to say what he wants to, he does so into a mic, & so do others. I have the right to tune in to WHO I WANT, WHEN I WANT. When Bill Press is on, I would be listening to Quinn & Rose, & he can't change that. Quinn & Rose, Mark Levin , John Gibson, & Glenn Beck are adding stations every week. Progressive/Lib talkers are not growing in audience or marketshare.
Look Press,You want to be heard? Work harder at putting on a show worth tuning into. You risk at becoming the next Phil Donahue, & then no one will take you seriously outside of a tiny cross-section of people who hate free speech, hate capitalism, & because they can't prosper in this America, they will work to change America into something un-American.

February 17, 2009 - 14:45 ET by CobraMan"PRESS: But wait, when they have public airwaves I own?"
Bill you, and the public in general, doesn't OWN the airwaves. They are not property, they are a resource, just like a lot of other limited resources which are regulated.
"Public" radio frequencies are access restricted (require a license for use) as to allow several radio stations to broadcast simultaneously in the same area without interfering with each other. It's not restricted as to make speech "fair" by mandating content, ya twit!
The fact that you DO broadcast, you DO, as you put it, "do three hours of talk radio every day from six to nine, that's my life, it's my business" proves that the Fairness Doctrine isn't necessary. You voice is already being heard, by anyone who want's to hear it.
You want to expand your listening audience? Fine, then give them what THEY want to hear, not what YOU want them to hear. That's what commercialism is all about.

February 17, 2009 - 15:14 ET by bigblu_82The justification for the regulation, or "balancing" of content on talk radio is often linked to its being delivered by the use of a limited public resource. My point is that newspapers are also delivered using limited public resources (roads) therefore, shouldn't they also be subject to the same rules?
Not really
February 17, 2009 - 15:23 ET by CobraManNot really, as the two examples are not analogous. A better analogy would be that, since roads space is limited, it would be "fair" if the cars allowed to use a public road were "representative" of individual choice in equal proportions, that there MUST be as many red cars on a public road at any give time as blue ones.
Obama: My job is above my pay grade
Press's Problem
February 17, 2009 - 15:29 ET by slickwillie2001The reason Press will never be a success in talk radio is that he does not have a voice for radio. This is a critical component ignored by those that wonder why liberal talk radio has failed thus far. Press could order lunch at a diner and sound like he's whining. Yes his world outlook is whiney, but it's also his voice. On the other hand, you could ask which came first.
He's a failure, but he can't admit that
February 17, 2009 - 15:35 ET by CobraManHe's a failure, just like most, if not all, liberal talk radio. I guess he doesn't see the real cause of his failure, himself. Instead of holding himself responsible for his own failure, he holds a popular talk show host like Rush responsible, or the entire system itself (it's always The System's fault when a liberal fails, isn't it?), and DEMANDS that he be allowed to cash in on someone else's popularity.
Obama: My job is above my pay grade
Okay
February 17, 2009 - 15:31 ET by bigblu_82I never thought of it that way. Good point.
Thank you
February 17, 2009 - 15:41 ET by CobraManThank you.
That's the problem with the Fairness Doctrine, the supporters like to think of AM radio as a single over-crowded public road in which there isn't enough room for them to even get access, forgetting that there is more than one road available to them, there are hundreds and most have never been driven, not even once!
Obama: My job is above my pay grade
Besides
February 17, 2009 - 15:14 ET by CobraManAlso, you seem to forget that anyone can drive on a public road, but no one can use another person's allotted radio frequencies. Once allotted, those frequencies are "owned" by the commercial license holder who have private access to broadcast on those set frequencies. The same can not be said of "public" roads.
Obama: My job is above my pay grade

I got lucky with the exit I took, it did lead me toward the Allstate Arena, but at the 6PM hour on a Wednesday night, I was really flipping out. Chicago traffic is insane.

MALZBERG: It's the airwaves though, not cable, but the CBS, NBC, ABC, same license.
Without wanting to get into a debate about whether there should be an FCC, Press ought to know that the FCC regulates the TV airwaves on the same basis as they do radio. The spectrum for broadcasting is limited, so stations are granted licenses on the public airwaves and are expected to operate in the public interest. If there is a Fairness Doctrine for radio, there should be one for TV. And given how much of TV's "entertainment" content has a political edge, there wouldn't be enough hours in the day to give equal time to conservatives for all of the liberal tripe we're subjected to.
