Fox News's Megyn Kelly debated liberal talk radio host Bill Press on Monday's "America's Newsroom," and the sparks were flying from the opening bell.
Kelly deliciously began the segment:
Hi, Bill. You have a little self-interest on this one perhaps?
Yah think?
But that was just the beginning (video embedded below the fold):
PRESS: I've never called for the return of the Fairness Doctrine. What I'd like to see is the fair and balanced doctrine.
And therein lies the rub, for much like liberals who say they're interested in equal opportunity despite the real goal being equal outcome, their desire to bring back the fairness doctrine is exclusively grounded in them wanting more leftwing programs on the radio dial despite the inability of such to be profitable for station owners.
All this talk about diversity and operating in the public interest is a smokescreen, and any assertion to the contrary either requires a deplorable lack of intelligence or honesty.
Which is it, Bill?

The invalid argument behind the Fairness Doctrine is that the market as a whole will be balanced only if we impose balance within each radio station. That's a fallacy, and anyone who promotes the Fairness Doctrine's fallacy either doesn't understand it or doesn't care.

CROSSFIRE WAS A LONG AGO...
February 17, 2009 - 11:45 ET by danybhoyI am trying to figure out what is in this for Bill Press. Outside of Kelly's intro, "Hi Bill, A little self-interest on this one perhaps?", I don't get it. Press has been around the block, he should know how the free press/commercial media works. He really cannot believe that if the gov't forces his show onto stations around the nation through some sort of "equal time" provision that the American people will listen. You can't force people to listen to anything.
When Kelly kept pounding the concept of the free market, he did not listen. She is 100% correct, progressive/lib talk has failed nationally, while Press was correct that it works in some markets, Kelly said that is the free market at work. Press will not accept that as fact.
The problem with Press & others that want the "Fairness Doctrine" or some other controls on talk radio & other media sources don't understand, is that the American people WILL NOT STAND FOR IT. You can do many things in the name of gov't control that the masses don't know about, but jack with the media, & the people WILL notice. Even some libs will side with conservatives against progressives if they come for the media, IF they understand that this will end up controling them in ways they don't want at some point.
BTW, Press, & others are finding out that Megyn Kelly is not just a hot blonde. I have watched her shred people trying to make lame @$$ed arguements to her about a number of things, & watched the beast within this beauty destroy them. She is a lawyer by trade(if Kelly sees this, I'm sorry, but it's true. It is a compliment & I hope you accept it as such) & watching her argue her PointOfView as a lawyer usually makes me happy. Plus she has 2 dogs, people who love dogs are good people, usually...

Amen, Noel.
After Air America, there shouldn't be any liberal that can honestly defend bringing back the so-called Fairness Doctrine. Maybe the Democrats will pass legislation to force every American to listen to their side, since they can't get their way in the free market, too.

BLONDE...
February 17, 2009 - 12:58 ET by danybhoyYou hit on something about multable failures, allow me to expand on that...
The high profile failures in progressive/lib talk radio are people like Mario Cuomo, Al Franken, & Janeane Garofalo. These 3 had next to no experience in radio, & I'll throw in Alec Baldwin's "effort" in Philly a while back(Hannity loves that audio-keep playing it Sean, I love it), they don't know how to use to use radio & make it work. Having a name gets you a little up front news coverage, but it is no substitute for working at having a show worth tuning to.
People like El-Rushbo, Hannity, Glenn Beck, Jim Quinn, John Gibson, & Rusty Humphries are old radio guys who understand how much work goes into making a show work & make it ENTERTAINING. They also understand, unlike "progressives" like Mike Malloy, Randi Rhodes(get your own name), & other lefties is that you don't denounce capitalism & say the free market sucks & then wonder why you have almost no advertisers. Who the hell is going to sponser your show when you say how you hate free market capitalism everyday? I love my SLEEP NUMBER BED, my aunt likes her BOSE WAVE RADIO, I know folks who like GO TO MY PC for buisiness, & I know a couple of friends who were happy with PRO FLOWERS. All of these products advertise heavily on conservative talk radio, get a clue. It's not very hard to understand, & if you don't work for NPR, you need to learn it. Having Mother Jones & The Atlantic as sponsers goes only so far.

Why stop at talk radio?
February 17, 2009 - 11:34 ET by MeanderingHey if what he says is true then why stop at talk radio? There are more liberal TV stations (as this website does such a wonderful job of pointing out) that put their liberal agenda on the "airways" than conservatives stations. So let's have the government mandate that there be more conservative news programs. What's that liberals? Oh it doesn't apply to television or is it because companies like GE have already got their liberal ways through the airways and we don't need "fairness" on television. Its a laugh, a crock and rediculous! Great job Megyn!

February 17, 2009 - 11:51 ET by ladderlessIf what he's saying is true, then there is a GREAT opportunity to make a massive amount of money.
I am assuming that there are available airwaves out there in each market. There should be a grassroots effort to set up a new station in each of the markets. Collect $billions from the liberal rich who should want to invest in such a venture -- Especially if what he says is true.
Those new stations broadcast nothing but liberal programming. They will have a monopoly on those markets (especially if everyone else refuses to air that programming for anything other than economic reasons - Which is what he implies).
BAM - Instant, runaway successes, $billions in profits, and everyone is happy.
If they enact a fairness doctrine, then the opportunity goes away. Don't let that happen, you rich liberals!

Yeah, Megyn did a good job, but that idiot Press still doesn't understand the implications of what it is he is wishing for. Think about the lost jobs in conservative talk radio, then the resulting loss of jobs in the so-called "fairness doctrine" radio programing that doesn't perform well enough to attract an audience and retain its employees. Well how's that for fairness, everyone is unemployed, isn't liberalism fair.

PROGRESSIVE TALK RADIO UPDATE...
February 17, 2009 - 15:02 ET by danybhoyWhile Kelly was handing Bill his @$$ & trying to explain the free market, this happened...
http://radioequalizer.blogspot.com/
In a nutshell, Nova-M radio, a progressive radio operation that has Randi Rhodes & Mike Malloy on their roster is shutting it's doors & will file for bankruptcy. Their founder, Sheldon Drobny, who also was a co-founder of Error Amerikkka as well, attempted suicide & is in a Chicago hospital. While I believe I speak for everyone here at NBs in wishing the man well, I cannot say as much for Nova-M.
The basic difference between progressives & conservatives on the subject of media fairness is this...Conservatives don't care if liberal/progresive media operations go belly up because of the free market. If they can make it, we say good, as long as they are doing in the free market...Progressives want to put conservative media out of buisiness through the power of the gov't because they cannot compete with them.

Way to go, Megyn!
February 17, 2009 - 20:29 ET by GalvanicPress ought to learn: never argue with a smart lawyer. She had him contradicting himself almost from the get-go. Press was equally arguing that "progressive" radio needs to be heard, while claiming that progressive radio is profitable and expanding on its own.
Press was the weak link on the old CNN Crossfire show, and has only regressed since. He can't make a coherent argument for anything.
He refutes his own argument
February 17, 2009 - 20:42 ET by c5thenBill (O)Press mentions several markets where there are successfull "progressiv" talk radio programs on the air. That proves that liberal talk shows work in markets that support them. It also proves that they don't work in markets that won't support them. Just because Seatle has two or three liberal talk shows on the radio does not mean that Dallas or Salt Lake City or Nasville must have them too. That's the problem with liberals...they want the air waves to be equally split (as measured by them) even in markets that are 90% conservative. It's part of their indoctrination plan.
Also notice how he excludes NPR from the requirement. Now I wonder why that is?
Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!
