Just in case you can't get through a day without some refreshing and uplifting words from the new president, the History Company has created the "Pocket Obama."
This is a tiny, pocket-sized book filled with "quotations borrowed from Barack Obama's speeches and writings."
According to its creators, "It is an unofficial requirement for every citizen to own, to read, and to carry this book at all times."
I kid you not.
As proudly described at the History Company's website (h/t NB reader John Pagonis):
Printed in a size that easily fits into pocket or purse, this book is an anthology of quotations borrowed from Barack Obama's speeches and writings. POCKET OBAMA serves as a reminder of the amazing power of oratory and the remarkable ability of this man to move people with his words. His superb and captivating oratory style has earned comparisons to John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King, and this historic collection presents words that catapulted his remarkable rise to the American Presidency. It is an unofficial requirement for every citizen to own, to read, and to carry this book at all times.
Includes themes of democracy, politics, war, terrorism, race, community, jurisprudence, faith, personal responsibility, national identity, and above all, his hoped-for vision of a new America. POCKET OBAMA is a portable, everyday primer for readers who want to examine the substance of his thought and reflect on the next great chapter in the American story.
Now, I know what you're thinking: this has got to be a hoax. Well, the History Company does indeed exist:
HISTORY COMPANY is a shopping destination like no other. It is a remarkable place where you can discover, enjoy, and find inspiration in the wonderful things that connect us to our past.
For over 10 years, we've offered an uncommon range of products that provide a brilliant glimpse of our uniquely American creativity and ingenuity, craftsmanship and style. In the process, we have been able to share the legacy of our roots in the form of fascinating, sometimes quirky gifts, for keeping or giving. At HISTORY COMPANY, the past becomes a present. Historian David Thalen wrote: "The challenge of history is to recover the past and introduce it to the present." That sums up the mission of HISTORY COMPANY.
For ten years they've been selling historical items like White House furnishings, models, and of course books. However, as the only thing Obama has done so far is get elected, it seems a tad premature to view his speeches and writings as historic, doesn't it?
After all, he could end up being a terrible president, right?
I guess the good folks at History Company aren't concerned about this, as the minimum purchase of "Pocket Obamas" is ten.
It seems they think people just can't get enough Obama.
I wonder if they're considering making Obama soap for those who can't do without The One even while they shower. Maybe a dashboard figurine, too, so that you can have him near you when you're driving.
Stay tuned.
*****Update: As NBer mvfreeman marvelously pointed out in the comments section...
This is eerily similar to Mao's Little Red Book.
Among the most widely printed books in history, Quotations had an estimated 5 to 6.5 billion copies printed during Mao's attempt to transform Chinese society. The book's phenomenal popularity may be due to the fact that it was essentially an unofficial requirement for every Chinese citizen to own, to read, and to carry it at all times during the later half of Mao's rule, especially during the Cultural Revolution.
During the Cultural Revolution, studying the book was not only required in schools but was also a standard practice in the workplace as well. All units, in the industrial, commercial, agricultural, civil service, and military sectors, organized group sessions for the entire workforce to study the book during working hours. Quotes from Mao were either bold-faced or highlighted in red, and almost all writing, including scientific essays, had to quote Mao.
To defend against the theory that it would be counter-productive, it was argued that understanding Mao's quotes could definitely bring about enlightenment to the work unit, resulting in production improvement to offset the time lost.
Yikes. That IS scary!!!

Is Obama building a checklist?
Item 1: Did you listen to Rush today? Yesterday? Any time during your lifetime? You will be banished from the presence of THE ONE
Item 2: Where is your little red book, comrade? Do you not know what Mao did to those who failed to bring their book? Do you have any idea what might befall you if you don't bring your Obama book?

They will be taught these little socialist maxims. They will be tested on their understanding and acceptance of the drivel in this book. There will be contests to see which kids can memorize the contents best.
And the magic of history, math, science, geography, literature will continue to be hidden from these kids. That's why US students will CONTINUE to score near or at the bottom of all industrialized countries in these topics.

January 24, 2009 - 13:14 ET by sevans1956Commentary: Obama breaks his own rule
Editor's note: Campbell Brown anchors CNN's "Campbell Brown: No Bias, No Bull" at 8 p.m. ET Mondays through Fridays. She delivered this commentary during the "Cutting through the Bull" segment of Friday night's broadcast.
CNN's Campbell Brown is disappointed by Obama's moves to make William Lynn deputy defense secretary.
(CNN) -- Just a couple of nights ago, we heaped praise on the new president for announcing what he called a new era of openness, where in his administration, transparency would rule the day.
And the lobbyists that he was so critical of during the campaign? Well, he told us they will now face even tougher new restrictions.
President Obama: "The executive order on ethics I will sign shortly represents a clean break from business as usual. As of today, lobbyists will be subject to stricter limits than under any other administration in history. If you are a lobbyist entering my administration, you will not be able to work on matters you lobbied on, or in the agencies you lobbied during the previous two years. When you leave government, you will not be able to lobby my administration for as long as I am president."
That's what he said two days ago. But as we first told you Thursday, and sadly we are learning more about this Friday, President Obama already wants an exception to his own rule.
You see, what happened is, there is this former lobbyist for a big defense contractor called Raytheon. His name is William Lynn.
President Obama wants him to be deputy defense secretary. So, the Obama administration wants a waiver to its own rule.
That basically means they are saying, we will mostly put tough new restrictions on lobbyists, except when we won't.
Really? Is this how it is going to be?
'No Bias, No Bull'
Please, please don't make us all any more cynical than we already are, Mr. President.
If you have no intention of abiding by your new rules, then don't make new rules. That would be "actual" transparency.
The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Campbell Brown.

January 24, 2009 - 15:43 ET by Indiana Joe... was "Hmm, looks like ours is blue instead of red."
Exactly where does Obama get this reputation as a "great" or "profound" speaker? I scanned his inaugural speech in vain for anything worth remembering a week from now. What I will remember is that he evoked thoughts of JFK by using slightly different words to plagiarize him. There was certainly nothing even approaching "Ask not...."
The most notable things for me is where he contradicted himself within the same speech. "We will not apologize for our life-style," or somesuch. Then, "We cannot contiue to use the world's resources without thought to the consequences," again from memory. Gee, I took the first to mean we could keep our Hummers, and the second that we must give them up. There was definite "change" in the air with that one.
If this is an example of a modern "great orator," we've definitely lowered our standards, just since RWR. Reminded me of what I tell my son; "You talked a lot, but you didn't say anything."

I think it is time for me to retire to my little log cabin in a farming community and enjoy the last year or two before my onetime republic, officially becomes a socialist country.
I mean no insult to the good people on this site, (with a few notable exceptions),when I say the following, but I believe it to be true--It will happen and it will happen because conservatives like you and me do not take to the streets. We do not follow the practices of third world countries with massive marches to try to show those we have elected that we are displeased. Those who would change us do attend these marches.
I will be called a racist--but--the majority of our black and Hispanic citizens believe the Messaih will find Cornucopia for them. They are too unknowlegable to understand that when the revenue base is destroyed, there will be no more welfare society.
For the sixth day, I went out and checked my gas gauge. My gas tank has not magically filled and, yesterday, at the supermarket, I had to pay for my food. When will the miracles start happening???
Majority rules. Silence is for fools.
Dear God , please send us another Washington, Jefferson or Reagan.
how about this for required reading...
January 27, 2009 - 10:50 ET by wyogatorSuppose we just make the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution required reading....maybe throw in the Mayflower Compact for good measure.
What I'm curious about is what happens when my Pocket Obama starts rubbing up against by pocket Constitution?

Should We Start A "Hubris Index"
February 3, 2009 - 13:42 ET by Dont_Like_TheBluesI "HOPE" that someone will keep track of the ridiculous acts of hubris done by the Obama Administration in the election and in office and noteworthy things like this little quote book. We've all seen many biased liberal pieces of junk over the past decades. As one example, Republicans having their every word scrutinized to the syllable. Every single mistake, large or small was lampooned in print and on TV. So what, we're all human and thus fallable.
Now we see the other side of the coin. From Obama talking about his upcomming struggles that he may have in his"second term" just hours after being declared the winner in November. Obama had not even begun his first term and was speaking about his future 8+ year legacy as if it were an absolute certanty. This was not a tongue tied mistake, it's hubris ! If W had said something like that after the 2000 election, the MSM would have slammed him.
I was far from the first such event and unfortunately not the last. And the MSM doesn't say a word. Now even more folks want to join the ObamaCon.
Please correct me if I am off point. Don't "famous quote" books usually get published AFTER someone has made a significant number of memorable quotes?
