It seems inaugural attendees weren't the only ones cheerful about George W. Bush's departure from Washington, D.C., Tuesday, for only the Fox News Channel aired a live broadcast of the homecoming ceremony held in Midland, Texas, for our 43rd President.
As the Los Angeles Times reported:
The rest of the networks, however, did not see the Bush address as news fit to broadcast. At 6:40 p.m. EST, MSNBC was in the middle of "Hardball," with host Chris Matthews and guests batting around the meaning of Obama's swearing-in. CNN was carrying live ongoing coverage of the final moments of the inaugural parade, with the Obamas beaming from the White House reviewing stand.
Too bad, for it might have been one of his finest speeches ever (video embedded below the fold):
Thank you, Mr. President, for all you've done for our nation and the world.

January 21, 2009 - 12:12 ET by thebutlerdiditIt was a great speech, WAY better than the lightsaver's crappy speech. Bush was warm, friendly, and honest. Loved it. BTW, I just read an article on Telegraph UK, and the writer said that the African American man next to him said he thought the speech was s#!t. It is linked on Drudge. Too funny.

January 22, 2009 - 10:56 ET by jquamI was just down in Texas a couple of weeks ago...and many of the people I met were not proud of this man. Even in your own state, you probably shouldn't speak for all. But then again...these people probably aren't part of real America.

Um...
January 21, 2009 - 18:07 ET by lotr...but for the most part, he was a good president, and objective (read: not contingent upon popularity, and without emotional hyperbole and hate) history will bear this out. Sorry, but the total lack of additional terrost hit jobs on American civilian targets over the course of 7 years is a significant (i.e., not the product of luck) accomplisment, even if ignored by a complacent liberal media.
However, this said, I will concur that he was not perfect, no doubt: His greatest mistake, without question, was allowing this country to put itself much further into debt without enforcing fiscal discipline.

Why is it that the outstanding accomplishments of thousands of intelligent, capable, and hard-working African Americans in practically every field of endeavor don't seem to count for anything, but the election of a no-account doper fraud is supposed to be the realization of Dr. King's dream? That is exactly what I want to know. I can understand African Am. are excited about this, I get it, but they (and all liberals) have taken this so far (just watch Oprah). That is much like liberals and Obama. Couple problems: first he cannot and will not answer all of their problems. Second, being that politics is not as black and white as winning and losing, will they hold on their precious Messiah and try to convince us he is in the process of solving those problems?

The 'New' Bush
January 21, 2009 - 12:49 ET by slickwillie2001As I recall, even Fox News did not cover it all because he rambled on a bit towards the end. He likely did not expect it to be carried live and was in more a conversational mode than speechifying.
This assumes that the 5-5:30EST version I saw was live.
In general though, note the hypocrisy from the liberal media on Bush. They wistfully praise his speaking style of late, saying things like 'why didn't he talk like this before' etc, etc. But you and I know that Bush hasn't suddenly changed, the liberal media has only changed from hypercritical to simply dismissing-mode.
FNC coverage
January 21, 2009 - 13:05 ET by lotr"As I recall, even Fox News did not cover it all"
Correct -- they didn't -- they broke away mid-speech (to our dissappointment). But give them credit for providing some coverage out the outgoing president's whereabouts and doings. It was during a part when he was talking about "everyday" American heroism and it sounded like he was beginning to rehash a part of his farewell address to the nation about a physician who was the father of a soldier killed in action in Iraq.
As usual, it was a good speech from what I consider to be a consistently good orator. Very glad that we had the channel on FNC, else we would've missed it, which is very sad.

January 21, 2009 - 15:25 ET by thebutlerdiditActually, I think they did show the whole thing on Fox, I saw it last night, and then again around 3-4 a.m. I can't remember if the first time I saw it, if it was complete, but I don't remember seeing Bret Baer, at all. I was grossed out by Fox showing all of the balls last night, some, sure, but not all ten! I loved the Bush speech, I appreciated it because it seemed somewhat spontaneous, and classic Bush. I still think it was 100 times better than the downer don't expect too much from me, scattered mess that the lightgiver spake, yesterday. Did anyone she the horrible Obama dancing? She is good, he looks like he is stiff from the waist down. Olby was saying he was a great dancer, because he was being "precise." I am not kidding. He called it "precision dancing" and then tried to incomporate it into the fact that everything Obama does is precise. It's funny how when Bush wasn't a good dancer, he was a dolt, and a fool. Now, Obama is a great "precise" dancer. I don't know what is in that Koolaid, but I think we are all going to need some to get through the next 4-8 yrs.

January 21, 2009 - 13:14 ET by attorneygirlI noticed yesterday that Fox was the only network carrying Bush's speech. And his speech was fabulous!
My sister and parents live in Fort Worth (I was born there), and it's true, folks in Texas are friendlier, closer to each other, and more helpful than in, say, California, where I live. George Bush will do well in Dallas--it's a great town (but Fort Worth is still closer to my heart...).
Now the haters have no where to go, and only themselves to blame when Obama and his thugs screw up this country. Obama's never run a business. Heck, he's never done anything. But be Black. That's it.
I'm giving up on watching politics. I'm now going to focus on family, running my business, and improving my own life. I can't take what I perceive to be the downfall of our country any longer.

Surprise, Surprise!!!
January 21, 2009 - 13:49 ET by PrairieSkyI went looking for the coverage of Bush's homecoming and couldn't find anyone who had started covering it. Fox had said that they would be covering it, but I decided to go online to one of the local Midland, Texas TV stations to see what I could find. Sure enough, I found one that was covering it live, and started watching online. It was about 10 more minutes before Fox cut in with their coverage.
This local station's coverage was wonderful, because President Bush was talked about and treated like a returning local hero..It was so great to see the press treat him with respect for once...The anchors talked about how terrific it was that they were able to cover his homecoming since they had also covered his departure for the White House 8 years ago. It was really nice and rather sweet...The hometown boy comes home. I'm glad I got to see the local coverage, because they often have stories to tell and share that the big networks don't know about. I'm glad Fox did cover it...I never expected that the rest of the idiot MSM would, so I wasn't surprised to see that they hadn't. They are all so happy that Bush is gone, and their hero is finally in the White House. (God help us all.)
I've said this already, but I'm going to say it again...Thank you and God bless you President Bush for everything that you have done for us all and for our country. Regardless of how history may or may not paint you, you are a patriot and a truly honorable man.
I miss him already...

Another gracious commenator followed up with, "Yeah, and it is really cool that Bush is leaving." January 21, 2009 - 17:55 ET by sms5217The truth of the matter is that on January 20, 2001, Bill Clinton went to several events and made several speeches, and the MSM covered EVERY one of them from start to finish, and even cut in on Bush's ceremonies.
