It appears Obamamania has not only infiltrated British newspapers, but so has Palin Derangement Syndrome...even in the fashion section.
Is there any safe place a person can go these days without being told Michelle Obama is "a goddess [who] stepped onto the world stage and made it her own...married to someone who is, frankly, a sex god," or that Sarah Palin is the "worst dressed" woman in the world "who may have spent $150,000 on six suits but still resembled a hopelessly sexless, up [sic] hockey mom who buys all her clothes from Wal-Mart?"
Apparently not, as the following appeared in Saturday's Daily Mail (h/t NBer Blonde):
This month, a goddess stepped onto the world stage and made it her own.
First Lady-in-waiting Michelle Obama, who looks as chic in a chainstore’s $148 printed tank dress as she does in Narciso Rodriguez designer wear, proved that you can be tall, have unruly hair, be amother [sic] of two demanding daughters, be married to someone who is, frankly, a sex god, and come out smiling, confident and truly a style icon. [...]
WORST DRESSED
There were lots ofcontenders [sic] for thistitle [sic]. Dannii Minogue, the Geldof girls, Beyoncé, Madonna inthat [sic] dress made of grass. But the award simply has to go to Sarah Palin, who may have spent $150,000 on six suits but still resembled a hopelessly sexless, up [sic] hockey mom who buys all her clothes from Wal-Mart.
Makes you wonder if the editors intentionally made the obvious errors in the preceding paragraph because they knew it was going to make so many people sic[k].
Of course, what really makes this breathtakingly silly is calling such an attractive woman -- who, by the way, has five children INCLUDING one born this year!!! -- hopelessly sexless.
Tough to believe the author missed this delicious irony...or maybe not.
*****Update: Adding to this delicious irony, Maxim magazine declared Palin to be the second "hottest" female politician in the world this year (h/t NBer BW222). In first place was a former showgirl on Italian TV.

It just seems that you have either the most sensible people on the one side and some of the looniest people on the other. Of course, anything in between doesn't make news. I agree, that one shouldn't run a whole country down because of the misdeeds of some of the loonies. I think it's human nature that, when provoked by an outrageous story, to make sweeping statements that one may not mean. I believe that the British, Americans, and a few others are all part of the only decent extended family left on earth - no matter how cracked some of their members are.

So the fact that such a biased (and from our POV) extremely stupid article would be run in such a media outlet, merely points out the level of kool-aid drinking...if you say that most Brits haven't been negatively influenced and think Sarah Palin is great, fine.
That's not what it looks like from this side of the pond, however. The fawning over Obama (slavering actually) displayed by this article is stunning in its stupidity.

About the Sarah Palin thing, not many gave her much thought past her politics. Remember, we have had a female prime minister and the comparisons where solely on that in any reasonable discussion.
The first lady thing, I don't get. Cherie Blair was a prcticing QC while married to the prime minister so I don't get what is so important about the first lady.

December 28, 2008 - 20:03 ET by jarrett.edwardsI can never believe it when some describes Mrs. Obama as some sort of elegant fashion plate, she has no posture. One has to have posture for clothes to look right, if not it just looks like a blanket thrown over and old chair. Not even that but a lot of what she wears is quite frankly so depressing Mortica Addams looks cheerful. Compare that with Palin who wears beautiful clothes that shape her body, and are cheerful yet professional looking. If this British women is really a fashion writer, my guess is that she considers Camillia to have better fashion sense then Princess Diana. Also, to the British reader who said they didn't understand the whole first lady thing. Its because in Britain the First lady is the Queen, as Head of State, or Queen Consort, as the highest ranking women in the land. Cherie Blair as the wife of the Head of Government was not First Lady of Britain. The best way to think of it is that the First lady is equal in our system to a Queen Consort. I am an Anglophile, and deeply love your country, for without you we would not have democracy, the English language, or the majority of our culture. Sorry, but I get just a little irritated when people over there start pointing to people over here and accuse us of being somehow ignorant of what is happening in your part of the world. While that may be true of many people here in this country, it certainly does not apply to the overwhelming majority of the members of NewsBusters.
Most of the members of this site who are not currently in the military are either themselves former members of same, or have siblings, children, or other family members and friends who are currently serving.
Another thing you need to be aware of is that most here are fairly intelligent and rather well-read, far more so than the average American. Most of us get our information from a myriad of sources, and not just in this country, but in yours as well.
Most here will not take one UK newspaper story and apply it to the whole country. They will, as they do with our domestic news sources, look for additional information.
While you may not think the UK has an immigration problem, as well as a commensurate issue with the proliferation of the Islamists and their influence on your laws, there are not just people on this site, but residents of your own country who would take issue with you on that.
While I agree that the media in the UK does a better job of presenting different sides of an issue to a certain point, there is still a strong element of political correctness that is present in much of what is reported there.

Even then there were cities where the muslim, or pakistani populations exceeded those of the brits.
The BBC was biased even back then of the coverage of American politics toward liberals and Neil Kinnock was probably the most vile Member of Parliament who hated Americans in general and Ronald Reagan specifically, and voiced these opinions on numerous occasions. affirmative action for rich, white boys
Please quote anyone on NB ever saying W deserved the White House because of his family. Please quote any conservative on the internet saying any rich white person was owed a job in the government due to anything but their own qualifications.
And why is it that intelligent African Americans are always considered, by conservatives with some race issues, products of "affirmative action."
Really? Republicans have that attitude toward Condi Rice, Michael Steele, and Colin Powell? A Republican president appoints the most diverse cabinet in history yet conservatives are racist? Republicans give America the first governor of Indian heritage, but we're the ones with race issues? Who calls Condi Rice a house negro, libs or conservies?
Who specifically brags about Obama winning because he is the first black president - libs or conservies? Who specifically said Obama's skin color will erase the sin of slavery? Why did 96% of the black people in this country vote for Obama?
Republicans judge Clarence Thomas and Condi Rice based on their actions. Democrats judge Barack and Michelle by appearances first and character second.

Oh, you hypocritical
December 28, 2008 - 14:53 ET by JerryOh, you hypocritical libs... When republicans out-raised dems on campaign contributions, big money was the greatest threat to democracy that the world had ever known..... EXCEPT when Obama raises bazillions of dollars, the majority from undocumented sources... and now money is good again..... EXCEPT when republicans spend money on public relations (wardrobe), and now it's bad again. Make up your freaking mind!
And Thanksgiving incoherency? Palin's coherency puts the stammering (when unscripted), bumbling (when unscripted), Obama to shame, just like her executive experience dwarfs the pathetic qualifications of Obama.

Bottom Line: Michelle Obama
December 28, 2008 - 16:14 ET by Chris NormanBottom Line: Michelle Obama could dress up like Granny from the Beverley Hillbillies and be declared a "fashion goddess" by these "liberals because it's chic" fashion critics. While Palin could be dressed by Dior himself and be egged for being a "fashion disaster". This has nothing to do with fashion and everything to do with politics and a toadying media. Remember when fashion plate Nancy Reagan was compared unfavorably to the dumpy and frumpy Raisa Gorbachev?

To libs beauty is only skin deep
December 28, 2008 - 16:39 ET by EricTheRedGood call, "motherbelt," on the "Michelle O shops at Target" mention from Us Weekly!
Michelle Obama is far from a goddess and Sarah Palin is far from sexless. This bitter DM columnist has it backwards. To these (admittedly biased) eyes, Michelle is a hag and Sarah is a work of art.
To liberals, beauty is only skin deep anyway. One reason Michelle is as ugly as I think she is, is because she's an ugly person on the inside. She has had much in life handed to her, from her affirmative action college admittances to her husband-influenced positions of employment. Yet, she is full of unwarranted bitterness, hate, and resentment, and it has taken its toll on her physical appearance.
OTOH, Sarah Palin was not only blessed with natural physical beauty, but her entire demeanor, from her infectious smile to the love she shows to her family, is a reflection of her inner beauty. She has had a simple life, yet at her still young age has achieved many great things. She has also faced real adversity, including most recently the birth of a Down Syndrome baby. But instead of treating baby Trig as what the Obamas and many liberals would call a mistake of nature to simply be discarded, Sarah instead viewed Trig as gift from God. For this and many reasons, Sarah Palin is beautiful because she emits beauty.
And the left hates her for it.

Precisely!
December 29, 2008 - 18:11 ET by andophiroxiaThat's the thing. When Sarah Palin was first announced as the VP pick, I took a quick look on her Wiki page and I saw the governor's homepage, and you know what? They didn't need to do anything at all in order to make her look good or even better. She was who she said she was! I understand during a campaign, there has to be a bit of spit-shine on a candidate, BUT with Palin, she did not NEED any!
The thing what I noticed about Palin, is that it looks like she's looking right at you personally. McCain did look like he had some direction, Obama was always looking down on people or staring past you--kind of sniffing distaintfully and talking down to you like a sheltered, pretentious college professor, and Biden was just kind of in lalala land. I sincerely think that Biden could very well be really smart, but I guess they smack him on the head with a hammer right before a speech--which attributes to his very distinct speech mannerisms. I would say the same for Barney Frank, but then he talks like they smacked him in the mouth with a hammer.

As for Michelle ma Belle, the idea that "she looks chic"...well there are so many flaws with that statement - from the clown college approach to attire to the egregious choice of accessories that it would take weeks to explain the subtleties.
Note to Michelle: there is a reason that thrift stores are stocked with white stretch pants. If you went to play the slots in Atlantic City, you'd blend right in.

Chic, she is not
December 28, 2008 - 22:30 ET by The Smokin FrogClearly Sarah Plain is intelligent, she didn't get as far as she did by being an idiot. And it was so good to see a woman that looked feminine, loved being a woman, loved being a mother, amazingly didn't want to kill children and had some solid conservative beliefs in how this country should run. Yes, I can see why the left would get their panties in a twist over her. As far as Michele Obama is concerned, if she wasn't married to the newly elected President her lack of femininity in presenting herself would be stated plainly. But she is married to the newly elected President so the grand revisionist machine must crank out the information of what we are supposed to see. A new reality. And if they say it often enough maybe we will believe it.
Chic, she is not.

December 29, 2008 - 09:09 ET by Paul AtreidesHas anyone seen what is passed off as good fashion on the runways now? Models who look as if they stepped out of Clive Barker novels; fashion that looks as if it was designed by a psychotic monkey on crack; designers (homosexual and straight) who make women look as unfeminine as possible.
Michelle O isn't the worst thing to come down the road (thankfully, no Old Crusty, yet), but Sarah Palin is far from sexless. Give me her look any day over the creepy, hideous, skanky, sexless bodybags that are being churned out by designers today.
Sarah looks like a woman, not something that just got up off of the table in a morgue.
I'm sure that whoever wrote that silly article thinks that she/he has just written something worthy of a major award. Let them have their delusions; it is probably all they have to cling to.

December 29, 2008 - 09:27 ET by Hunter12Paul, Walk through the ladies fashion department and you'll see the rack packed with clothes. It isn't that women no longer want new clothes, it's that the fashions are terrible. All the clothes make a woman look pregnant. I've never understood why women let people who don't like women, dress them. That may be an over-generalization, but no one can deny that fashion designers take the easy way out. They design clothes for models that aren't much different from the hangers from which the clothes drape so nicely. I'm always disheartened when I shop with my wife and she is depressed because this year's fashions don't favor a full figure. I try to tell her that I always judge her outfits on how they look laying in a pile at the foot of the bed, but in the feminine world, I guess my opinion doesn't count.

December 29, 2008 - 14:30 ET by thebutlerdiditFor some reason, I agreed to buy a year's worth of the women's mags for some school fund raiser. Normally, I don't even read them, drop them with the elderly. I remember a big article last year, right when the O's were first getting a lot of attention, that MO said she was a mess until Oprah's people got a hold of her. So, the reason she changed her look, she said they did her makeup and dressed her for all her events. Must be nice to have friends in high places! The Black Widow dress, by Rodriguez was said to cost approx 15,000, but was given to her. As for her looks, the poor woman is not a godess, she is just average. But, hey, if the people that do Oprah can make her look human, then MO must be a piece of cake. I don't know who all these people are who think BO is sexy, must be the same ones who thought Bill Clinton was sexy. I wouldn't touch either one, even if I was a liberal. That's like me saying Newt gets my blood heated up.

December 29, 2008 - 15:31 ET by Roscoe MendagoYou have got to be joking, right!!! Michelle Obama is not what should be viewed as some sort of fashion plate, of course that's my opinion. But how does one see this woman who graces a stage like a dock worker as a "Goddess". There's nothing feminine about the way she walks, maybe "longshoreman" is more like it. Check out the "back", it's like it should be attached to a "charging rhinoceros", the woman is huge back there.
When comparing Michelle and Sarah, just let me ask you this, "who would you want babysitting your kids." Michelle Obama is scary looking and would frighten the kids.
Another thing, Sarah Palin could be dressed in a flour sack and look better than Michelle Obama.
Sure is nice knowing you're right!!!!!

Psst, Pass it Along: Michelle Obama Doesn't Wear Pantyhose
December 29, 2008 - 19:41 ET by Rush FanIn early November the AP's Jocelyn Noveck wrote an article titled "Obamas Seen as Kennedy-esque" that compared the youth, style and optimism of Barack and Michelle Obama to President John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie. My local paper accompanied the article with pictures of both couples.
But to be fair and balanced, the AP also compared the pigheadedness, negligence, warmongering and lack of style of President George W. Bush and wife Laura to another former presidential couple - President Calvin Coolidge and wife Grace. (I could be mistaken about this, but it does sound like something the AP would do).
However, I'm not mistaken that the same AP article, now titled A young family, a new style for the White House noted the following fashion changes once the Obamas take over the White House:
"I can't think of a first lady who was unabashedly able to bare her arms and shoulders in the East Wing,"Behrens says. And while we're at it, the bare leg may win out, too: Michelle Obama has said on national TV that she avoids those pesky pantyhose.
Other possible changes, according to Behrens: fewer puffed sleeves on the streets of Washington, and fewer sequins at night. And in a troubled economy, women will be happy to know that their first lady shops online at J. Crew.
And her husband? One men's fashion expert foresees a nationwide influence on the shape of suits. "Barack Obama will cause a generation of men to look at the way suits fit," says Tyler Thoreson, editor of men.style.com. "A fitted, tailored look will feel more natural to the average guy after seeing it on the leader of the free world."

As for Gov. Sarah Palin, CNN's Campbell Brown, No Bias No Bull wanted to get in some parting shots before the year ended:
CHARLIE GIBSON, ABC NEWS: Do you agree with the Bush doctrine?
GOV. SARAH PALIN (R), ALASKA: In what respect, Charlie?
GIBSON: The Bush -- well, what do you interpret it to be?
PALIN: His world view.
GIBSON: No, the Bush doctrine enunciated September 2002 before the Iraq war.
MILBANK: "When Sarah Palin went on with this series of interviews that
was strung out by CBS with Katie Couric, in which she had this
absolutely devastating inability to talk about her knowledge of Russia,
which in turn made her the subject of Tina Fey's jokes on "Saturday
Night Live" and created this fundamental, if perhaps unfair impression
that she was completely not up to the task.
Sarah Palin went from being the person who could energize John McCain's campaign to being a laughing stock that was a tremendous drag on his ticket."
