The media's post-election truth leaks are in full swing now as the Washington Post will publish an admission from its ombudsman Sunday that it was clearly biased towards Barack Obama in its coverage of the just-concluded presidential campaign.
Isn't the truth great when it doesn't hurt your agenda?
Although Deborah Howell's piece "An Obama Tilt in Campaign Coverage" will appear in Sunday's print edition, it was published at the Post's website Saturday, and revealed quite frankly what most media observers have known for months (emphasis added, photo courtesy Newsday):
The op-ed page ran far more laudatory opinion pieces on Obama, 32, than on Sen. John McCain, 13. There were far more negative pieces (58) about McCain than there were about Obama (32), and Obama got the editorial board's endorsement. The Post has several conservative columnists, but not all were gung-ho about McCain.
Stories and photos about Obama in the news pages outnumbered those devoted to McCain. Post reporters, photographers and editors -- like most of the national news media -- found the candidacy of Obama, the first African American major-party nominee, more newsworthy and historic.
Aside from the numbers, the omissions were really what drove most media analysts wild. Howell agreed:
Obama deserved tougher scrutiny than he got, especially of his undergraduate years, his start in Chicago and his relationship with Antoin "Tony" Rezko, who was convicted this year of influence-peddling in Chicago. The Post did nothing on Obama's acknowledged drug use as a teenager.
Oddly, Howell didn't address the Post's coverage of William Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright. Nor did she discuss how the presidential candidate's wives were treated. I wonder why.
However, she did address the difference in vice presidential candidate coverage:
One gaping hole in coverage involved Joe Biden, Obama's running mate. When Gov. Sarah Palin was nominated for vice president, reporters were booking the next flight to Alaska. Some readers thought The Post went over Palin with a fine-tooth comb and neglected Biden. They are right; it was a serious omission.
In the end, mea culpas are wonderful because they assuage a guilty conscience.
However, likely the least-qualified presidential candidate in the modern era was aided and abetted by Obama-loving press outlets like the Post, and admitting this after the fact doesn't lessen the injustice or the lack of journalistic integrity.
The press behaved disgracefully during this campaign, and America will likely be damaged by it for years to come.
As such, media outlets that actually recognize their failures should not just admit them, but also inform the public what they'll do to prevent such negligence in the future.
Anything less is just good marketing.

Rather than a mea culpa, they need to really pay up. IOW, they should hire someone like Stanley Kurtz (or one of our esteemed NB bloggers) to do research on Obama and run the stories that they suppressed during the campaign, and put the most interesting ones on the front page of the Sunday edition (web too of course) until Stanley (or NBer) runs out of material. Then they might start winning back some respect.

November 8, 2008 - 14:11 ET by Dee Bunkunfortunately their are still many pop culturists that are fine with it so we have to confront it in my opinion.
All of these proof of bias stories don't even take into account the intensity which makes it even more appalling. All negative stories and all positive stories don't have the same intensity. If they had a way of factoring that in, then we'd see even more outrageous numbers. McCain had almost zero glowing stories and Obama had almost zero complete smear bogus lie stories.
The point that the media completely lost it, was when the left wing lunatics went after them hard - blaming them for the Iraq war for not "questioning enough". Of course it was bull and they were already very biased against the war but the left wing loons and their hero's in Hollywood kept on them. It wasn't enough to "question" they had to lie and obfuscate.
We have to do what the angry left did. It's very sad because we truly just want fairness - not advocacy. We shouldn't have to fight for it, but we do. It will be much harder for us even though our cause is just, because we aren't throwing the cocktail party they want to go to. We do pay their paychecks though. We will need much greater numbers than the left wing loons to be loud and vocal about their outrageous unfairness.

The article states that there was very little coverage of Obama's life in post secondary education. So why didn't they do anything about it before the election?
The article states that there wasn't a single story about Obama's drug use as a teen. So why didn't they do anything about it before the election?
I appreciate their admission but...geez...Howard Kurtz had been literally screaming about the bias for months and the Post did nothing!!!! How can the readers think that this article is anything but a very lame attempt to restore credibility with the center right side of their readership?

November 8, 2008 - 13:21 ET by JohnM"Post reporters, photographers and editors -- like most of the national news media -- found the candidacy of Obama, the first African American major-party nominee, more newsworthy and historic."
That the media would find it "more newsworthy" - stop right there! That's a clear admission that the media: 1) made an evaluation rather than a report, 2) abandoned fair coverage of a Presidential RACE (in which TWO people run AGAINST each other and deserve equal coverage), and 3) put disproportionate focus and attention on him.
THESE are the kinds of things that media personnel didn't just happen to do, they CHOSE these actions.
"Obama deserved tougher scrutiny than he got"
Again, this occurred because media personnel CHOSE to ignore the red flags.
And there were more than "one gaping hole in coverage" - check out Erik Rush's "Stalin in Blackface" for a short list: http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?pageId=79421
I'd like to just repeat and emphasize what you wrote:
"the least-qualified presidential candidate in the modern era was aided and abetted by Obama-loving press outlets like the Post, and admitting this after the fact doesn't lessen the injustice or the lack of journalistic integrity."
Noel, this is an excellent piece. My point is that there needs to be emphasis on the fact that this injustice didn't just happen - individual people in the media made CHOICES to abandon "journalistic integrity", in fact, I'm not sure they ever had any.

Too late for Mea Culpa, but not too late for penance
November 8, 2008 - 15:15 ET by The_Family_GuyDear Washington Post,
What a sad admission. Your paper (among other news sources) was culpable in one of the more desreputable media charades in recent memory. You now come out and admit that you were biased and you misled the public into making a less than informed decision...but you do so when it is too late.
Why bother? Your bias was already apparent, and your after-the-fact admission does nothing to return journalistic integrity to your paper or the medium in general.
It is too late for a Washington Post Mea Culpa. You failed your readers and your profession. I can only hope that in the tough economic times ahead, conservatives and proponents of truth in journalism will offer your paper the penance it deserves; a stiff reduction in circulation, ad revenue, and political gravitas

By the end of the day I wanted to through my shoe at the screen.
Who's fault is that, the answer is that liberals are fools who are easily lead and can't make an intellegent decision on their own especially if its not in the NY Times, Wahington Post or any other in the tank liberal source.
We conservatives were begging for the media to be fair and look into this imposters past. But no, they needed to send the armies to Alaska. The truth is, the information about Obama was available IF YOU CARED TO LOOK IT UP.

The real purpose of this
November 8, 2008 - 17:22 ET by entThe real purpose of this article was to cover up the bias.
Let me explain. The gist of their article was that the bias was there but not that bad, like 60/40 in favor of Obama. But consider who was doing the judging ... the liberals who work at the paper! I have no doubt that if you asked conservatives to make the same judgements, they would conclude that the imbalance was more like 90/10 or 99/1.
I don't read the WAPO but with my local paper, in the year before the election, I don't recall reading anything positive about McCain or anything negative about Obama. There was some reasonably neutral reporting but most of it showed bias. Even the photographs were consistently biased.
No, the purpose of the article was to persuade us that the bias wasn't that bad and to lead us to believe that they will do better in the future. Of course, when the next election rolls around in a couple of years, this assurance will be long forgotten.

Certainly was not one bit
November 8, 2008 - 19:09 ET by brerolCertainly was not one bit surprized by Howells conclusion. The bias by WaPo and many others was quite clear to see and hear. And this bias is dangerous. The institution of the media is vital to a free society. For it to florish the public must have full trust the news they recieve is honest and objective. With the election of Obama many people out there are seiously questioning whether or not McCain got a fair shake from the media. This mistrust could very well carry over to the presidency of President Obama. We have serious problems out there that no one person can solve. It will have to be a team effort in order for us to unravel the conflicts ahead. With Howells recent conclusion I'm afraid Obamas task as president will now be that much more difficult to deal with. And there lies the irony. The press goes all out to ensure Obama won the election and in the process the media just intensified the challenge Obama will have in leading our nation. Memo to the press. Be carefull what you ask for. You just might get it.
