The Obama campaign appears to have come up with a neat way to deflect criticism of the presumptive Democrat presidential nominee's failure to visit wounded American troops while visiting Germany last month: have wife Michelle sponsor a meeting with military families.
As CNN.com reported Monday (emphasis added): "Days after a television spot from John McCain’s campaign suggested Barack Obama did not hold enough respect for members of the military, the presumptive Democratic nominee’s campaign announced Monday that Michelle Obama will host a roundtable discussion with military spouses highlighting the launch of a military families advisory group."
UPDATE AT END OF POST: OBAMA MISSES THE FOLLOWING TOWN HALL MEETING FOR A VACATION AND FUNDRAISER IN HAWAII!
I guess the campaign felt this was a better idea than the junior senator from Illinois attending a presidential town hall meeting to be held next Monday in Fort Hood, Texas, the largest active-duty military installation in the country (photo courtesy NY Daily News). As the Dallas Morning News reported Monday, much like in July when he couldn't find the time to visit our wounded soldiers at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, Obama is also too busy to meet with families at Fort Hood (emphasis added):
Both major presidential candidates have been invited to the event, which CBS has agreed to broadcast live. So far, only Mr. McCain has agreed to attend. [...]
Obama campaign spokeswoman Shannon Gilson said that while the senator has a scheduling conflict on Aug. 11, he "strongly supports" veterans and military families, and he has worked hard on their behalf in the Senate.
Which meeting with military families do you think will get more media coverage: the one that Mrs. Obama attends on Wednesday, or the one that Mr. Obama is scheduled to miss next Monday?
Stay tuned.
*****Update: NBer James Makarski alerted me to a Sunday posting by my colleague Mark Finkelstein in which George Stephanopoulos spoke about Obama's upcoming vacation between August 8 and 15.
The Honolulu Advertiser detailed some of the Obamas' vacation plans on July 22:
U.S. Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois is expected to attend a private fundraiser for his presidential campaign on Aug. 12 at the Halekulani Hotel, several sources said.
Obama is expected to be in the Islands for about a week for a vacation and local organizers are also hoping for a public rally, possibly at Magic Island. [...]
The fundraiser is being co-chaired by Mayor Mufi Hannemann and corporate executive and prominent Democratic financier Walter Dods. Donors are being asked to contribute $2,300 per person, sources said, and can attend a reception with the Hawai'i-born candidate for $10,000.
The fundraising goal is $500,000 but some believe it may go higher given the initial interest from donors. One of the organizers described the response as "astounding."
Well, this certainly seems more important than attending a presidential town hall meeting at Fort Hood, wouldn't you agree?

wait just a second
August 4, 2008 - 14:34 ET by candanceI distinctly remember Michelle Obama saying she was too busy raising her kids to get involved in policy. So if she won't be involved in running the country what good does it do her to discuss issues with military families?
If I were one of the spouses invited I'd be so insulted that Barry couldn't bother to show up himself. He's too busy chilling with teenagers in Germany.
I'm so thankful the Obamas are merciful enough to let us eat cake.
Who'll choose the spouses?
August 4, 2008 - 14:42 ET by WingletDriverWill these spouses be chosen at random or will they be screened to present whatever point of view the libs want to hear?

Are you sure?
August 4, 2008 - 15:09 ET by IgnatzJFahrquarConsidering the lack of attention McC has received from the media who would know.
Of course, maybe I missed it, too. Did McC have a a scheduled visit then cancel it because the photo op was not allowed?

August 4, 2008 - 14:58 ET by SickofLibs"(Obama) has worked hard on their behalf in the Senate."
What drivel. The only thing Obama has worked hard on is getting himself elected. Period. His record speaks for itself.
As far as "launching a military families advisory group", is he doing this as a private citizen or as a Senator, cause last time I looked, that's the only office he currently holds. And which military families, pray tell, are clamoring to hear Mrs. O's counsel and guidance? She's got as much in common with military families as, let's say, Paris Hilton. Like zero.

MO, Got Your Script?
August 4, 2008 - 15:46 ET by Hooterville DenizenGiven MO's talent for going off script, there had better be a "handler" with the power to yell "cut!" when she sticks her foot in her mouth. I suspect she's too smart (according to her) and too hard-headed to pay them the least attention. Berry, get the media ready to cover up "MO eruptions."

I do not give a rats rear how the msm covers any of this with Michelle, we all know how in the bag with the msm it will be handled and glorified.
He should immediately cancel his so-called excuse called a scheduling conflict...he is showing his true colors...
The enemy around the world ought to be tickled by this though...
McCain had better speak about about his loud a clear...every single chance he gets...

August 4, 2008 - 18:06 ET by BlondeThink about it. This is about the biggest mistake Obama can make.
First of all, to blow off the troops, AGAIN. (And the McCain campaign, if they're smart, can use it the same way they did when Bambi skipped Ladschul).
Secondly, to send his wife to meet with Army wives. Do you think Princess Michelle has a clue what it's like to be a military dependent? She's going to sound even stupider than she has in the past. She has nothing in common with these women....she'll ask the most inane questions which will show how out of touch she and the Great O truly are.
The military already disdains Obama. This will be the icing on the cake. And even democrats won't like the dissing.

McCain never
August 4, 2008 - 18:26 ET by docbscheduled to go..his 'mo' was to stage a walking tour, as Senator at the taxpayers expense, that required 1000's of soldiers to scrub the area and many choppers to cover him overhead. He has also not voted for soldiers support but collects a militarty pension and SS.
The lie about the Obama 'photo op' is just that-- crude not verified, attempt to skew the truth...and malign him.....
As to Michelle- don't you think the wifes of the soldiers deserve some attention!!!!They are making as much sacrifice for our country as their spouses? If you were to see Baraks schedule , I doubt you would be able to deny the conflict...remember hclinton is scheduling events for him to retire her debt!!!!
