NYT Bashes Bush on Memorial Day, White House Strikes Back

It's Memorial Day, and the good folks at the New York Times thought it appropriate to not only attack the President's position on a new G.I. Bill, but also to despicably lambaste him for "[h]aving saddled the military with a botched, unwinnable war," and "having squandered soldiers’ lives and failed them in so many ways."

On Memorial Day!

Thankfully, White House press secretary Dana Perino has already issued a written statement concerning this deplorable act by the Times on a sacred day when our nation commemorates its fallen heroes.

But before we get there, here are some of the atrocities the Times editorial staff felt were appropriate to offer their readers on this solemn holiday (emphasis added throughout, h/t FishbowlDC):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Having saddled the military with a botched, unwinnable war, having squandered soldiers’ lives and failed them in so many ways, the commander in chief now resists giving the troops a chance at better futures out of uniform. He does this on the ground that the bill is too generous and may discourage re-enlistment, further weakening the military he has done so much to break.

So lavish with other people’s sacrifices, so reckless in pouring the national treasure into the sandy pit of Iraq, Mr. Bush remains as cheap as ever when it comes to helping people at home.

Nice sentiments on Memorial Day, dontcha think? Yet, the Times then stooped to misinformation to strengthen its point:

Mr. Bush — and, to his great discredit, Senator John McCain — have argued against a better G.I. Bill, for the worst reasons. They would prefer that college benefits for service members remain just mediocre enough that people in uniform are more likely to stay put.

They have seized on a prediction by the Congressional Budget Office that new, better benefits would decrease re-enlistments by 16 percent, which sounds ominous if you are trying — as Mr. Bush and Mr. McCain are — to defend a never-ending war at a time when extended tours of duty have sapped morale and strained recruiting to the breaking point.

Strained recruiting to the breaking point? I guess the Times editorial board forgot about an Associated Press article on this very subject that was posted at the paper's website on May 13:

The Marine Corps far surpassed its recruiting goal last month, enlisting 2,233 people, which was 142 percent of its goal, the Pentagon said. The Army recruited 5,681 people, 101 percent of its goal. The Navy and Air Force also met their goals, 2,905 sailors and 2,435 airmen. A Defense Department spokesman, Bryan Whitman, said that if the Marine Corps continued its recruiting success, it could reach its goal of growing to 202,000 people by the end of 2009, more than a year early.

I guess facts are irrelevant when they interfere with the point you're trying to make. Fortunately, the White House issued its own statement countering the Times:

Once again, the New York Times Editorial Board doesn't let the facts get in the way of expressing its vitriolic opinions - no matter how misleading they may be.

In today's editorial, "Mr. Bush and the GI Bill", the New York Times irresponsibly distorts President Bush's strong commitment to strengthening and expanding support for America's service members and their families.

This editorial could not be farther from the truth about the President's record of leadership on this issue. In his January 2008 State of the Union Address, while proposing a series of initiatives to support our military families, President Bush specifically called upon Congress to answer service members' request that they be able to transfer their GI Bill benefits to their spouses and children. In April, he sent a legislative package to the Hill that would expand access to childcare, create new authorities to appoint qualified spouses into civil service jobs, provide education opportunities and job training for military spouses, and allow our troops to transfer their unused education benefits to their spouses or children.

As Congress debates the best way to expand the existing GI Bill, Secretary Gates has laid out important guidelines to ensure that legislation meets our service members' needs and rewards military service. First, since our servicemen and women have regularly requested the ability to transfer their GI bill benefits to their family members, legislation should include transferability. Second, legislation should provide greater rewards for continued military service in the all volunteer force.

There are several GI bill proposals under consideration in both the House and Senate. The Department of Defense has specific concerns about legislation sponsored by Senator Webb because it lacks transferability and could negatively impact military retention.

The President specifically supports the GI Bill legislation expansion proposed by Senators Graham, Burr, and McCain because it allows for the transferability of education benefits and calibrates an increase in education benefits to time in the service.

Though readers of the New York Times editorial page wouldn't know it, President Bush looks forward to signing a GI bill that supports our troops and their families, and preserves the experience and skill of our forces.

Curiously, this was the second time in one week the White House struck out at the press, with the first being Ed Gillespie's letter to NBC concerning the editing of Richard Engel's interview with the President.

Makes one wonder why Bush and Company have waited until his final year in office to start pushing back when the media are out of line.

Unwinnable War?

Jeez, New York Times. You guys have no faith in our military, do you?

Interesting. I assume the

Interesting. I assume the administration feels OK doing this because they're in the home stretch. Have they never pushed back like this before?

Even if they have,

Even if they have, you wouldn't see much of it in the lying scumbag left-wing media - all they cover is the lies, insults and accusations of the Left.

To get the truth you either have to go to the source, www.whitehouse.gov, or some conservative media outlet, or Newsbusters.

But you can go ahead and ASSume whatever you want...

The NYTs...the enemy

The NYTs...the enemy within.

I just want to add I heard a lot of this editorial this morning on the Washington Journal...I was infuriated then, as I am now. You ought to have heard some of the despicable callers to-boot today.

I watched the Memorial Day Ceremonies on C-SPAN like I do every year...guess where C-SPAN decided to go right after this was over...a committee hearing about the big bad VA and homeless vets.

The left never quits..even on a sacred day like this.

As to the WH finally fighting back...better late than never, but this should have been done years ago...I waited patiently to see what would happen with the NYTs and WaPo releasing info that was classified to hurt us every way they could think of during a time of war...all for their hatred of Pres. Bush and his administration and their gain for power...does anything happen to these people, hell no, no accountability whatsoever with these filthy critters..and the WH and repubs remained silent for years now...it has been very aggravating, but I gave up long ago on thinking at least the Justice Dept. would do something...

Agenda for the leftists will be completed when the good guys won't fight back.

Squandering

When Pinch Sulzburgers people bring up the word "squander" I cannot help but think how Pinch has consigned a once legendary brand name to the junk heap.  Not an easy accomplishment.

Speaking of squandering, the Sunday edition of the Times kills 75,000 trees.  Should not the sincere concern of the Times editoral board about "global warming' be enough for the pure idealists to cease printing of this drivel.

Traitors

Never mind the rest of the "editorial". To say that the war is "unwinnable" is beyond pathetic. They imply that the greatest fighting force the world has ever known cannot beat a bunch of sand-scum strapping dynamite sticks to donkeys. They can claim to be talking about the President's policies, but they are really trashing our soldiers, and on Memorial Day, at that.

Oh I wish we could take this scum who "buys ink by the barrel" and have them shot for treason. I honestly wish we could. They are doing far more to hurt this country than the terrorists in Iraq.

Their not traitors

Agreed that running an editorial like this on Memorial Day is beyond tacky.

They are excercising their free speech, which is exactly what our armed forces are fighting for.

I disagree that they trashing the troops, they are trashing the Presidents policies. They don't like the fact that they watching our soldiers get blown up every week and are impatient for more progress.

Also, honestly admitting you want to shoot people for treason for excercsing free speech is a little overboard as well isn't it?

shawn.. Oh yes the NYTs

shawn..

Oh yes the NYTs and WaPo along with others have hurt our troops intentionally by the things they print over the years...and he is just expressing what a lot of us feel...anger is real towards these enemies within..and they never ever stop, not even today.

When WaPo releases information about other countries that are aiding us in keeping terrorists as prisoners, knowing full well it may hurt these little countries and their continuing support for us, or the NYTs releases information about how we are tracking terrorists what the hell do you think it is called not hurting our military during a time of war..just two examples here...WaPo gets a Pulitzer for it by the likes of Dana Preist.

I call it treason...period.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

Also, honestly admitting

Also, honestly admitting you want to shoot people for treason for excercsing free speech is a little overboard as well isn't it?

Extreme?  No, actually what is extreme is the NYT policy of publishing any little secret Intelligence Item they can glean in order to hurt the war effort.

Most of the programs that the Times reports on are in no way oriented on the US public so there is no issue regarding US civil rights.  Instead these programs are oriented on Non-US persons who are actively attacking our troops.

That is OBVIOUSLY treasonous.

Nope Shawn sorry. Freedom

Nope Shawn sorry. Freedom of speech in an artistic venue is fine even if you dont' agree with it or find it deplorable. The press of this nation are not artisans and are supposed to be carrying on a service for its citizens not carrying water for its enemies with blatant biasedness, partisanship and ommision. By thier actions they have become the literal fifth column and carry water for our enemies by thier in-ability to tell the truth when its good news for America in a Republican admin.

Now I'll be the first one to say editorial is opinion, and should be protected as free speech except when giving away classified information or threatening the nations security which the NYT is guilty of. Also the articles outside the Opinion/Editorial section have a liberal slant/ spin to it or the ommision of pertinant info. and facts when convenient and at times also has given up classified info.

Now if Bush were taking away everyones freedoms and the writ of habeus corpus exists no more, then why hasn't every single turncoat at the NYT been brought up for treason, shot and the building leveled and paved over? Why hasn't every leftist in Congress or in Hollywood? Not that I'm for it or anything, just sayin'

The last time I checked they have yet to honor one MOH recipiant or soldier thus far in the WOT, thats proof enough. By thier politics they compromise the security of this nation and its citizenry and endanger our soldiers in the field. Despicable and deploreable.

If there is a fine line between treason and artistic expression the NYT has done a great job of blurring it's distinction.

Don't Feel Like Answering

I don't really feel like answering. I knew, as I was writing, that some leftist out there would reply with the typical, and expected, "Free Speech" chant.

In the first place, it is "They're", not "their", as in "they are not traitors", shawn.

In the second place, the New York Times absolutely ARE traitors to this country. You may never understand the phrase "aid and abet", so it would be a waste of good blog space to try to reason with you. Everyone who TRULY supports the troops understands that phrase completely, and understands that the New York Times is prolonging the War On Terror by giving the enemy hope. Yes, hope. Hope that public support in America against the terrorists will crumble (in your case it already has), and we will turn tail and run, leading to the creation of yet another terrorist state from which to attack the country I love.

If some day, you are trampled to death in a theatre because some a-hole yelled "fire" during a movie, I would hope that your liberal pastor would defend the a-hole's right to free speech during the eulogy as they lowered you into the ground. No, I don't really want you to die, I would just like people to understand that the First Amendment to our Constitution does not give you or anyone else the right to say things that get people killed.

Joel, BD, bt and blazer

First of all Joel, sorry about the spelling, it has never been one of my strong points.

Second of all, I agree that giving away information about how we are tracking terrorist is not in the best interest of our country, and I agree it is treasonous.

Most articles do not give away our positions and military secrets and the are the exception rather than the norm. The majority of the this country does not believe the war was worth the cost and the msm is conveying this.

Also Joel, your simile about the movie theater is totally different. The person that shouts fire in crowded theater is making people scared and would be liable for the deaths that occur.

A newspaper article that gives opinions is protected free speech, just like I respect Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulters free speech.

I don't like their opinions, but I certainly would not want to shoot them.

  "Second of all, I

"Second of all, I agree that giving away information about how we are tracking terrorist is not in the best interest of our country, and I agree it is treasonous."

.........and thats just a drop in the bucket concerning what they have done Shawn. Albeit the NYT isn't the only guilty party, but it's where liberal America gets its talking points at the start of each day. So are you admitting it is a treasonous news operation and they should meet the firing squad or are you of the belief that its o.k. to accidentally commit treason as long as you didn't mean to or treason is tantamount to spitting on the sidewalk or jaywalking these days?

Second of all, I agree that

Second of all, I agree that giving away information about how we are tracking terrorist is not in the best interest of our country, and I agree it is treasonous.

Thank you for that.  Giving away information n how we are tracking terrorists is Precisely what the NYT is and has been doing for the past seven years.

Most articles do not give away our positions and military secrets and the are the exception rather than the norm. The majority of the this country does not believe the war was worth the cost and the msm is conveying this.

Most articles might not give away information, but key articles do so.  Information regarding the Terrorist Surveillance program, financial training programs, and operations regarding surveillance in foreign lands have been "Broken" by the NYT and thus this information has been passed to the enemy.  Thus, the NYT has and is operating in a treasonous manner.

A good example is what I call the tinfoil hat paradigm.  Imagine that the US Army has created a new airborne surveillance program that can read a terrorists mind and geolocate them and it has been very effective against Al Queda in Afghanistan.  The system works as long as a surveillance aircraft equipped with the gear is overhead and the terrorists think about ice cream.  The systems sole limitation is that it cannot read through tin foil hats.

And as of yet the AQ does not understand what system is zapping large numbers of their terrorist cells.

Now imagine that the New York Times gets word of this new system and decides to publish a front page story on the system and its use in theater.
The Pentagon gets word of the impending article and actually asks the NYT to not publish the article which tells what the system is and what its limitations are.

If the NYT does publish in a deries of 64 front page articles over the course of a year, and thus ruins the system (the bad guys begin wearing tinfoil lined turbans)and limits US effectiveness, is this not treasonous?

Because this is parallels what they have done to the US Intelligence community.

"I, _____, do solemnly

"I, _____, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

 ".......all enemies foreign and domestic;"

Special Forces should just rappel out of Blackhawks, crash through the windows of The NYT tossing smoke and flash grenades and frogmarch every single one of those soulless pee-pantsed bastards strait to Gitmo. The "Uniform Code of Military Justice say's it's o.k.

At any rate BD, if tinfoil hats protect you from the surveilance aircraft than I guess a lot of liberals in this country can sleep easier. : )

treason?

Like I said to folks in my last post. Giving away our secrets and locations, I can see you POV.

However in this article it is the authors opinion that the war cannot be won. It is his POV and it his right to put it on paper. Just like it is your opinion to disagree with him.

shawn...so glad you set me straight...by the way most of the comments here were to your statement about your little over-the-top insinuation that that joel posted concerning treason...it seemed to hurt your sensibilities...

You happened to completely omit that here and seem to be dodging that now.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

sorry for the late response bt

had to spend quality time with the wife and have dinner. I'm sorry, what am I dodging? Can you clarify?

shawn

shawn,

Actually, this is an editorial. So, it expresses the views of the paper, not just one person. That's stronger than an op-ed or a column. ns

Your right Noel

It does suggest that the article either expresses the views of the paper or just the editor. They have a right to their opinion. However i'm not sure that reflects everyone that works at the New York Times.

I'm sure most writers agree with Matt more times than not, but i'm sure not always

Shawn

Shawn,

You're misunderstanding what an editorial is. There's a board on a paper like the Times which decides what issues they will write about, and what the position is going to be. Editorials are very strong statements coming from a paper. This isn't the same as Matt posting an article here, for none of us was involved with identifying what he was going to write about, or what position he was going to take.

As such, the editorial is INDEED the position of the paper, and not just the opinion of one person. ns

Shawn the NYT's version

Shawn the NYT's version of opinion, facts and objectivity looks more like propoganda than reputuable news.

If freedom of speech is an "alienable right" no matter what, then how do you explain this?

Axis Sally: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_Sally

Prosecutors called Gillars' broadcasts subtle attempts to break down the morale of American soldiers. They introduced evidence that Gillars had signed an oath of allegiance to Hitler. They also claimed that she posed as a worker for the International Red Cross in order to record messages from American soldiers that could be converted into propaganda.

Gillars' defense attorneys argued that her broadcasts stated an unpopular opinion but did not rise to the level of treason. They also said that she was under the sway of her former romantic interest, Max Otto Koischwitz, a German national whom she had met at Hunter College in New York City.

The sensational, six-week trial ended on March 8, 1949. After long deliberations, the jury convicted Gillars on only one count of treason, for making the "Vision of Invasion" broadcast.

Robert henry Best: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Henry_Best

On July 26, 1943, a grand jury in Washington D.C. indicted Best in absentia for treason. After the war ended, he was arrested on January 29, 1946 in Austria and was brought to the U.S. on March 29, 1948 for trial in Boston. Best was accused of "giving aid and comfort" to the Nazis. He acted as his own lawyer in front of judge Francis J.W. Ford. Several people testified at his trial including Princess Sofia zur Lippe-Weissenfeld of Austria. [4]

On April 16, 1948, Best was convicted of 12 counts of treason. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and began his sentence at the federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. His conviction was appealed to the United States Circuit Court[5] and to the Supreme Court which refused a hearing.[6]. "

Now as American citizens shouldn't thier 2nd amendment rights have been protected and these crimes overlooked? How is what the NYT does from day to day any different? Or are you of the belief as long as you help the enemy from our soil and not thiers it's freedom of expression and not treason?

If giving aid and comfort to the enemy from thier soil is high treason there is a long list of Democrats in congress who should see the gallows.

                   - Ben Kenobi on  Liberals, and the MSM.

" The Cake is a lie."

Freedom of speech is not

Freedom of speech is not completely free, e.g., you can't yell "Fire!" in a theater.

...unless there's a fire.

...unless there's a fire. :-)

I'm of the mind that the NYT is free to spew whatever garbage it wishes on its pages, so long as it does not put others in harm's way.

I think that on several occasions, the editorial decisions they have made have put our troops and American lives in harm's way. And I think its main objective is actually to use shock value to sell newspapers. "Lookit how cutting edge are we!" Of course, this desparation is having the counter effect.

At any rate since you brought it up those lynchings were brought to you courtesy of the Dixiecrats and the internments courtesy of a Democrat president.

All, I'm saying is that those were different times. The thinking was very different than it is now.

Saying that is this an "unwinnable war" is not treason. It is a disgusting statement, but it is not treason.

I already agreed with many conservative points about it being treasonous to give out classifed information, but not ones opinion, in an editorial.

I believe Noel has stated

I believe Noel has stated the hardcore fact that the editorial dept. is not opinion, it is the policy/politics of the paper.

I'm not saying your one of them, I believe your reasonable and moderate on a lot issues, but excuse me if I am a little suspicious about liberals who are passionate about protecting my freedom of speech but not my right to bear arms?

Unless..........oh wait !, they're passionate about protecting liberal speech, not mine.

Of course if this was Canada I cringe to think how many times I would have been brought before The Human Rights Commission and punished for my conservative "thought crimes". (shiver)  : )

Do me a favor and listen to this song. Even though Pink has beautiful voice, this song is filled with hate and lies. I agree with that. The President truly though there were wmd's and he did not mean to trade blood for oil like many libs say.

My point is free speech is allowing things you oppose. Do you find the song treasonous or just mean spirited?

I also know what you mean about liberals and free speech. I got booted on my second day of posting on DU for criticising the fairness doctrine and saying I understand conservatives pov on abortion.

Shawn, Pink is an artist, I dont' think she's privy to intel or is compromising national security by writing worthless pop songs.

The journalists and masthead at The NYT are not, they are supposed to be performing a great service to America and the American people and they have/are failing miserably, treasonously in my opinion.

Now supposed I had some highly classified intell and wanted to share it with the enemy but decided to do it by writing a pop-song and had it put on CD and top 40 radio, does that make it allright then?

You do see how ridiculous of a comparison that was dont' you ?

Pinks song has the ablity of reaching millions of her fans. Again for the I believe the third time, I agree that leaking sensitive information is treasonous.

The fact that they said this is an "unwinnable war" is not.

The msm tilts things to the left, I admit that. Some believe FOX news tilts things to the right, they broadcast their POV on news and it is also wrong of liberals to infringe on their free speech.

"I'm not gonna say you've lost this argument or anything but when you have to start bringing up Pink, anyway just sayin'. "

lol, I just thought about the most anti Bush musician I could think of, it was either that or the Dixie Chicks

Good night blazer :-)

Once again Shawn she's an

Once again Shawn she's an artist she doesn't have to be or pretend to be un-biased or objectionable. The NYT and the liberal MSM paints itself exactly as that and in doing so hoodwinks that segment of American people who dont' get thier news from any other source and trust that thier telling the truth.

There are three things in this country that keep us free, The soldier, the vote, and the press (notice I didn't include the politician). They go hand in hand, they are links on a chain and when one weakens and breaks the others are sure to follow.

When the press has become the fifth column of our enemy and allied itself unashamedley with over half of Congress that compromises our freedom and safety. No matter how many awful CD's Pink puts out, she doesnt'.

The Dixie Chix

Then what the Dixie Chicks did was not treasonous, which I completely agree with.

I have learned over the past year and a half, there is a media bias, but I still do not believe it is as bad as some make it out to be.

You're right Shawn

Maines' comment that they were ashamed George Bush is from Texas was not treasonous.  But it triggered decisions across the country as to whether people wanted to hear them, or stations wanted to play them.  Decisions every bit as American as the chix stated opinion.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

No it wasn't treason, what

No it wasn't treason, what the Dixie Chicks did was in poor taste, but they simply said something about being ashamed that they, like Bush were also from TX. If your gonna criticise your president, keep it in the house, doing it over there is buttkissery.

It wasn't like they stood up and said "hey y'all, thanks for comin' out , we got an awesome lineup of new songs, nuclear secrets and troop movements we'd like to share with you tonight !"

I may not like what The Dixie Chicks said, but hey, I may not want to listen to or purchase thier CD's anymore either, theres the rub.

The Dixie Chicks excercised thier freedom of speech, some people excercised thier freedom to purchase and The Chicks have been eating sour grapes and crow ever since.

Ask Potter Stewart

We know it when we see it.

Unfortunately, you're infamous for "not seeing" anything that we see.

Playing the devil's advocate for all time does not make one a traitor...lucky for you...but instead, you're consistently forwarding the "argument" that the devil doesn't even exist.

We draw the line when the morale and credibility of our troops is deliberately undermined in a public fashion on a national holiday commemorating their service and sacrifice.  Beyond those already putrid, unsettling truths, the NYT goes further, letting the world know that they believe the war to be "unwinnable".

All of this, on our national holiday meant to celebrate the uncommon bravery, honor, and sacrifice of our defending forces.

In a time of war.

NYT Editorial = anti-American propaganda

Is there really any other way to view this?

I know that there is such a

I know that there is such a thing as giving comfort to the enemy, that "the devil" exists, but I don't think this is it.

And again, if this is traitorous, how come no one's filing charges?

I do like your definition, though, as it's one of the first I've seen.

Get it right!

I disagree that they trashing the troops, they are trashing the
Presidents policies. They don't like the fact that they watching our
soldiers get blown up every week and are impatient for more progress.

No, they are trying to trash the President. Unfortunately for them, the Prez is the top officer in the military so it is impossible to trash him without trashing the troops. Next, the troops overwhelmingly support the Prez and their mission. So trashing the Prez and the mission also trashes the troops. Finally, Bush is the Prez of the US, elected TWICE! So trashing him is trashing the US.

Next, by saying crap like "unwinnable war" they are providing a morale boost for the enemy. So saying that they are tired of seeing our troops getting blown up every day is BS, as they are the primary cause. If the press had backed this war, it would have ended in 2003 and so many fewer troops would have had to been blown up! Yeah, that's right, blood is on the hands of the press as well as on the hands of people like you.

(By the way, don't even try to tell me how the troops feel as I was one of them! We abhored quotes like "unwinnable war" as it meant that more of our buddies were going to die. We could see our enemies sitting in their safe houses pointing it out to each other and taking comfort knowing that all they had to do was hold out. So I wouldn't say these guys are guilty of treason, but I'd love to be left alone with a few of these pencil pushing pussies to show them what "unwinnable" is all about!)

They are excercising their free speech, which is exactly what our armed forces are fighting for.

First, get your rights right. Otherwise you
sound like an idiot for all the wrong reasons. They are exercising
freedom of the press. Next, it is not unheard of for a Prez to shut down
the press for crap like this. Lincoln,
"The Great Emancipator" shut down over 300 newspapers for being
"disloyal".

You are correct that treason is a bit much, but they do have a responsibility to tell the truth. Unfortunately, their hatred for Bush has spilled over into hatred for America and has literally blinded them to the truth. Not only have they lost their integrity, but it has also cost them any shred of class that was left.

Still, it brings up an interesting question. Is treason protected under the guise of an "editorial"?

First of all thank you for your service and helping this country defend its freedom and putting your life on the line, so we at home can feel safe.

I disagree, you can criticize the President without criticizing the troops. It was the Presidents choice to invade Iraq, because he thought we had WMD and not the troops.

Despite freestinkers famous list and many arguments on NB, it is the official positition of the government that no wmds were found. That is not the troops fault, it is the President and his cabinet. So there is a difference.

For the record i do not like the fact that the msm does not report good news as much as the bad, I would just hate for a precedent to be set, where their rights are stifled. The Scooter Libby trial was pretty scary for me, that was the closest I have seen to the government make reporters reveal their sources.

Yes Bush won twice, but that does not give him the right to be shielded from criticism

The debate is over

First of all thank you for your service and helping this country defend
its freedom and putting your life on the line, so we at home can feel
safe.

Don't thank me, thank my recruiter. (Inside joke. That is what our Drill Sgt's would say whenever we said, "Thank you". Then we pushed...) But on that point, I didn't just join so that Americans can feel safe. I knew that if I ever went to a "hazardous fire zone", it would not be stateside. I knew before I ever joined that I would be fighting for the rights and freedoms of people other than Americans. That was fine with me. What makes Americans so damn special that I can only fight for them and their freedoms? Aren't we endowed by our Creator? Does our "Creator" love Americans more than, say, Iraqis?

I disagree, you can criticize the President without criticizing the
troops. It was the Presidents choice to invade Iraq, because he thought
we had WMD and not the troops.

Sure, it's possible. Calling the Prez a dookie-head has nothing to do with the troops. However, calling Iraq "unwinnable" IS critical of the troops. That is saying that they can not complete their mission. It's saying that our troops can not win. It's calling them losers.

Next, there WERE WMD's found in Iraq, just not the vast stockpiles the media built us up to expect. You don't hear about them because they were not reported on. Howerver, hearing the WMD drum pounded five years after the fact reminds of a Cox and Forkum editorial cartoon I saw a while back. Troops are investigating a mass grave. Skeletal remains of women and children are scattered all around and some peacenik hippie is standing there screaming "Where are the WMD's?" In other words, WMD's were not the only reason to go to Iraq. Don't believe me? Ask an Iraqi if they thing we shoud leave because fewer than expected WMD's were found. Ask him if his world would be better off if we left him to the local militias to control.  See what those people think before you sacrifice their lives for nothing more than political gain.

Finally, the debate on whether to go into Iraq is over. It has been over for five years. Debating it now is like debating whether or not we need milk when we are on the way home from the store. Liberals are so pissed that lost that debate, they want us to stop the car and walk home. Obviously, that is not the best strategy, at the store or in Iraq. The only debate we should be having now is "Was Iraq better or worse off under Saddam Hussein?" and "What can be done to bring our troops home without throwing away all that so many Americans and Iraqis have died for?"

So debating whether or not we should be in Iraq is a slap in the face of the troops. When you are pulling your second 8-hr guard duty shift (8 on, 8 off) and you see all the good things you and your unit have done by sacrificing your blood sweat and tears, it kinda pisses you off when rather than talk about your successes there (which was better than any other war in history), all the media and Democrats back home can talk about is your failures.

So, yeah, it kinda pisses us off.

A few years I got into a

A few years I got into a heated debate with some liberals about this very same point. On Memorial Day they lambasted the President and his policies. I find this tactic despicable. Memorial Day is far bigger than one President and one war. It is a time to acknowledge the sacrifices of all the veterans who gave their life in defense of this countries in any conflict. It is not an holiday to attack the sitting President of the United States. On a personal note I like Jim Webb's idea for revamping the G.I. Bill.

So you think that someone

So you think that someone should get a full 4 years' college tuition after serving 3 years in the Army?

What effect do you think that will have on re-enlistment?

Hi mb.. I saw that

Hi mb..

I saw that earlier and was going to find a link for jgrapes about the difference in the bills ect...something which the msm has also avoided, purposely...I don't think most people know the problem with the two amendments/bills...or the difference and reasons why.

Just wanted to say thanks because it is important to me also.

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

MB, Yes I do. Its the

MB,

Yes I do. Its the least the federal government can do for those who spent time in combat zones since 9/11. I dont know if it will effect reenlistments or not considering the number of enlisted personnel that have college degrees. Got to go the wife is waiting on me for some fun time:)

Of course it will affect

Of course it will affect re-enlistment. Everyone will go in, do their 3 and get out and go to college for free. Even ROTC requires 6 years of service after they pay for college.

And the bill doesn't specify "those who spent time in combt zones." It's just anyone who served 3 years.

If that's the least the government can do, why stop there? Why not give them a $50,000 bonus to use as a down payment on a house? Why not pay for all their kids to go to college too?

I'm not saying that men and women who serve don't deserve some benefits and some payback. But there are other reasonable bills that would provide college assistance and would encourage some to stay in the service longer than 3 years. And some would even allow the benefit to be passed on to children if they weren't used.

It is a terrific congressional tactic to lard up a bill and then berate the President and distort the situation if he doesn't go along.

I just wish President Bush had fired back like he did with that statement a lot more often during his administration!

Bad idea... or other ideas are better.

On a personal note I like Jim Webb's idea for revamping the G.I. Bill.

It sounds good, but what made up my mind is the fact that the military doesn't want it. That should be the end of it right there. But let's take it further.

First, the GI Bill exists. Soldiers have their school already paid for.

Next, there is the Army College Fund and similar programs for other services.

Finally, when all other benefits are used up, you have the Hazelwood Act (in Texas only) that states a soldier can go to a state sponsored school tuition free. In other words, Jim Webb's idea. Other states may have similar programs. If not, call your state legislature!

So this bill does nothing at all for the troops. It's just a complete waste of money.

Want do so something? Poor that money into VA hospitals and more housing assistance for Vets. How about letting soldier's wifes and families use some benefits? (I work full time to support my family while my wife goes to school and pays full price. Granted, we both have degrees, but only she is able to do continueing education as I have mouths to feed and a roof to maintain.) Maybe that money could be spent towards employer provided private health insurance for Vets. It would certainly help soldiers get work if their employers knew that they would get help with their health coverage.

There are many things that would do more good for Veterans than simply throwing money at their education. Congress is just being lazy.

NY Times

I was one of the proud that delayed college in 1965 to enlist in the Marines. Mustering out in 1970 I recall watching the streets of Oceanside, California fill with protesters and wondering what my country had come to. Instead of major newspapers supporting returning troops they cut our legs from under us, even as some had left theirs behind. They published secrets in a design to impede our objectives or get killed if we tried anyway. The Times portrayed some vets as time bombs, causing the public suspicion that lasted years. At the same time, these newspapers idolized the gentle people protesting across America, wanting only to end our attacks on the Vietnamese, who after all were just being patriotic (wouldn't we have resisted a armed invasion?). They implied the domestic bombers and other violent protesters were confused but had good intentions. Even now Bill Ayers and his Moll are lionized and respected.

No, back then the liberals weren't calling for a new GI Bill, they were the ones responsible for the deplorable state of the VA Hospitals in the 60s and 70s. Only during the terms of Reagan, BushI, and Clinton did the VA system improve, and improve dramatically. I give Pres. Clinton a lot of the credit, too. The NY Times has a lot of nerve to publish an editorial like this. They still don't give a damn about the veteran, only damning in any way possible the President and his troops trying to defeat an implacable and relentless enemy.

Behind the Times, keeping up with the Commies.

The leftists are out in force today. On one blog a forum topic was simply "Thanks Marines." However, the obligatory liberal with anti-Bush talking points lashed out in typical cliche fashion. I wasn't sure where it came from. After reading this topic ... the mud settled, I know the source of that kooks spontaneous jamais vu.

Just a Tad Tardy

Noel, you are so right in stating "Makes one wonder why Bush and Company have waited until his final year in office to start pushing back when the media are out of line". These dolts down at 1600 Pennsylvania are just about 7 1/2 years too late. Now they feign anger at the Times and Richard Engel. What did they expect with Engel and who gave Engel, a two-bit hack by any standard, one-on-one access to the President?

MSM has been very successful driving the President's negatives to record highs, but they got plenty of help from a surprising source, the President himself and his press operation.

I can recall a time many

I can recall a time many years ago when the NYT was considered a respected source of information. Now they're pretty much a joke, with declining circulation to prove it. I figure it's only a matter of time before this rag suffers its dying gasp with sales mainly in supermarkets. "Woman in Oklahoma Gives Birth to Twins Fathered by Alien from Alpha Centauri!"

Dear Shawn, Overboard?

Dear Shawn,

Overboard? Check the rulebook. Treason is a federal capital offense. If the NYT editorial board has committed treason, it is appropriate to suggest a firing squad. At least, as long as you believe in the rule of law, rather than the rule of 'feelings', it is appropriate.

real press: 10, NYT: 0

The last few years have revealed what the NYT is made of with revelations of false stories, etc. One thing the NYT is not made of, IMHO, is journalistic honesty. Pres Bush is not at fault for lost lives in Iraq, it is the murderous, enemies of freedom. Furthermore, the commanders in Iraq have been given all the resources that they have asked for, both to minimize US deaths and maximize the capture or death of the enemy. So the NYT is full of BS.

And since the surge (another request for resources), US deaths have dropped dramaticly and more enemy has be captured or killed, and furthermore, it is Iraqi soldiers and police who are now performing most of the dangerous work of killing and capturing the enemies of freedom, since training and vetting has already past a number of major milestones.

The bias at the NYT is, IMHO, borderline treason, to speak about our Commander-in-Chief with such a pack of lies, possibly putting our soldiers in great danger, by possibility lowering their moral, making them more susceptible to defeat and by emboldening the enemy, especially in the light of their pack of lies. Shame on you editors at the NYT! What a bunch of cowards, for failing to tell the truth.

It is also dispicable to use the press for political purposes at the expense of US lives with the BS. After all, it is the military that bled and died so outfits like the NYT can print the truth, and yes, even print lies. They are also ungrateful "pigs".

If honest Abe...

If Abe Lincoln were alive...

He would have had most of the editorial board of the NYT's hung by now, and the olde grey lady would be a pile of ashes.

They continue, to this day, to display that hatred and they really should get smart, since it could cost them another election.  The Times circulation is going down and down because of stuff like this.  Are there enough Conservative hating liberals around to keep the NY Times solvent?  Not only does the Times have no class, it also has no business acumen.
