As NewsBusters reported Saturday, conservative author Ann Coulter told Fox News's Sean Hannity that she will campaign for Hillary Clinton if John McCain wins the Republican presidential nomination.
On Sunday's "This Week," ABC's George Stephanopoulos, a former Clinton adviser, asked the junior senator from New York the following question concerning this matter:
What do you make of the fact that Ann Coulter says she's going to support you if John McCain gets the Republican Nomination?
Hillary responded (video available here):
Well, that this will be an interesting election all the way through, George. You never know. Strange bed fellows and all of that. But I honestly believe that it would be a tremendous contest between Senator McCain and myself. I think I can draw the contrast and stand on that stage with him. You know as well as I do that at the end of every election, independent voters are often drawn back to a fundamental question. Who can protect and defend the United States of America. And although security is not foremost on the agenda there is no predicting what the agenda will look like come next fall. And I believe that I am much better positioned by record and experience, by you know the values and the opinions that I've expressed in this campaign, to go one-on-one with John McCain. And you know, at some point, I'm happy to have any voters although this one took me somewhat by surprise.
Frankly, I'm surprised she didn't cry during this exchange.

February 4, 2008 - 17:37 ET by candanceHillary will play this over and over if McCain gets the nod. The enemies he has made on the Right will be his undoing - and I still think he deserves it.
The Democrats should smear this in his face every day.

February 4, 2008 - 19:36 ET by R D HelmI really hate to agree with you here, but I think Broom Hilda would be a better president than would McCain (my monitor just cracked) in several areas.
If for no other reason (and there are a few, as I believe McCain to be in the early stages of senility, among other things) that it would force the republicans to galvanize against her, which would strengthen the party allow them to survive to fight down the road.
All McCain would do is allow the party, by accident or intentionally, to slide further leftward, as many republicans will not have the guts to cross him. I believe this would seriously damage, possibly beyond repair, what is actually left of the party.
Which isn't much.

February 5, 2008 - 07:50 ET by motherbeltGood points RD...the Republican Party, with the prodding of our own President at times, is definitely sliding farther left.
But you have to wonder if it's because the country as a whole is becoming more socialist in its philosophy... when more and more people want the government to give them what they can't earn for themselves, even if it means taking from someone else to do it...when people think that no one should have to do without anything just because they don't earn as much as another..
When the country as a whole is developing that attitude...the only argument between the parties is who will offer more freebies. Maybe that's why they are moving left...it's what the country wants.
Hillary Clinton's recent op-ed in the WSJ is a masterpiece of promises...it's the Promise Land!! Who wants to hear about personal responsibility when a politician promises...college that a single mother can afford..now where do you think those subsidies going to come from?????? Minimum wage of $10 an hour?????
Neal Boortz has laid out what he sees as the Democrats' (Secret) Plan for America. The "biggie" as he calls it is this (emphasis mine):
Remove a majority of voters from responsibility for income taxes This is the biggie – and they've made no attempt to hide their goals here. The Democrats have been working on this plan for decades --- with no small amount of help from the cowardly Republicans. The idea is simple. Using "refundable" tax credits and deductions and such ideas as the fraudulent Earned Income Tax Credit the Democrats are working to shift the entire burden for the payment of federal income taxes onto a minority of US taxpayers. Right now the top 50 percent of taxpayers pay almost 96 percent of the taxes. The Democrats are close to their goal. When the majority of voters have no federal income tax liability it will be almost impossible to pass any meaningful tax cuts – and further tax increases will be a piece of cake, especially if the taxes only affect those to be considered to be rich. Through this ploy the Democrats plan to create a defeat-proof socialist congress.
Rather than fight it, Republicans have apparently decided to get on board so they can be in positions of power too, when it comes to pass.
motherbelt,
February 6, 2008 - 04:14 ET by R D HelmI believe we as a nation are now entering blindly into that dangerous time that all free republics have historically stumbled into. We have literally become fat, happy, and lazy. Perhaps too much so for our own good. The Romans had nothing on us, as we appear to be destined to follow their still timely, and rather stark, example.
Freedom requires personal responsibility. That is hard work. Most Americans today seem averse to that concept completely. We have had it too easy in this country for over fifty years now. We have now gotten to the point where we want others to take responsibility for our poor decision-making processes. Healthcare, retirement, you name it. We do not wish to be saddled with making these choices.
Liberalism (socialism) offers the escape from these hard choices that it always has: Forcing others to be responsible (as in to pay for) our decisions, particularly if they are poor ones.
Liberalism is, after all, the path of least resistance for many. When these people have the opportunity to screw the "rich guy" they are unable to resist. After all, it is not "fair" that others have more than do they.
Problem is, when the have-nots vote this way, it is their pockets that will ultimately be picked, to their own detriment, as well as our own.
50+ years of government (mis)education, ya know. The chickens have pretty much come home, IYKWIM. :-(

Sorry, I don't buy this line
February 5, 2008 - 09:56 ET by lotrSorry, I don't buy this line of reasoning at all. McCain makes some off-handed remarks about Alito (I suppose I now need to research this, as even the MSM has been lax in reporting on it), and now we're supposed to believe that this equates him with Hillary Rodham Clinton? Never mind the fact that McCain voted Yea on Alito, whereas both Hillary and Obama voted Nay. Actions speak louder than words. It is guaranteed that Hillary will conscientiously appoint judges who will vow to uphold Roe v. Wade. Gee, I wonder who NOW, NARAL and Planned Parenthood are going to endorse -- Clinton or McCain? A no-brainer if you ask me -- they ain't about to gamble on McCain and his off-handed remarks, but here we are all ready to campaign for Hillary.

"She has never run anything. And the idea that she could learn to be President as an internship just doesn't make any sense."

February 5, 2008 - 01:35 ET by Parker1227...despite all of our wishes (I too will be voting Romney), do we really want to sit it out to "send a message" that probably won't be heard?
Would it be better to get two ultra-Liberals appointed to the supreme court - or two moderate conservatives?
If we help elect Obama due to our disappointment with McCain, we will be installing a 46-year-old socialist as commander in chief. If this is teaching someone a lesson, I don't know just who that someone would be.
PS To reiterate, this is a hypothetical question based McCain winning the nomination. I am NOT in favor of McCain, but to say that he would be worse than Hillary or Obama (like Ann Coulter says) is to deny reality in a BIG way.

Hey Clear,
February 5, 2008 - 01:56 ET by Parker1227I am not sure that the GOP intended for us to be stuck with McCain.
Fred Thomson started late, then played around and didn't show any fire in the belly until his last couple weeks in the race.
Huckabee is deliberately staying in the race to split the conservative vote and sabotage Romney because of personal pet peeves (and likely anti-Mormon bigotry).
The GOP doesn't control who throws their hat in the ring. But I must admit that the crazy spending and pig headed stupidity about our open borders - is maddening!
