More evidence that Al Gore's Live Earth flop was indeed the beginning of the end to the public's fascination with global warming: Leonardo DiCaprio's recently released film on the subject has bombed with moviegoers.
As reported by Fox News's Roger Friedman Wednesday (emphasis added throughout):
His environmental documentary, "The 11th Hour," has been a total bust at the box office. After 18 days in release, the film has grossed only $417,913 from ticket sales.
As Friedman pointed out, these are horrible numbers:
The 90-minute snore-fest is playing on 111 screens this week, but that number is likely to be reduced this Friday. The film will be sent to DVD heaven after that.
By comparison, Al Gore and Davis Guggenheim's similar but far more engaging "An Inconvenient Truth" had already made $3.5 million by its 18th day of release.
With the disaster that was Live Earth, and the BBC's announcement that it's canceling a planned day-long special on climate change, it certainly appears the public has tired of being told by disingenuous, wealthy, hypocritical movie stars that the world is going to come to an end if they don't stop driving automobiles and heating their homes during winter.
Even more troublesome to a media fixated on shoving this supposed problem down the throats of citizens is how much attention was given to this film by press outlets throughout the country including the New York Times and CBS.
Is this an indication that the press have way overplayed this issue, and that the public have grown numb to media claims of imminent doom?
Or, have back-to-back errant predictions of above average hurricane seasons led the public to a logical conclusion press members seem incapable of coming to: meteorologists can't predict weather a week from today; why should anybody believe they can forecast events decades and centuries into the future?
Regardless of the answer, it seems that two years after Katrina hit New Orleans, without a follow-up occurrence of that natural disaster, America has lost its appetite for the global warming alarmism being served by the press.
Now that's an inconvenient truth.
*****Update: Brian Maloney tells us that "The 11th Hour" was written by Al Franken's Air America replacement.

Maybe this comparison is way off base...
September 5, 2007 - 12:27 ET by HelenS...But when Di Caprio preaches, the "sermon" flopped because it was based on false "religion".
Mel Gibson went WAY out on a limb to preach a "sermon" (The Passion...) and had a HUGE success, because it was based on true religion.
Like I said, that may not have anything to do with anything but it does seem telling that truth, based on eternal truth, succeeds, while the trumped up "truths" fly about as gracefully as lead balloons.

Hollywood millionaires lecturing other people about wasteful lifestye choices and asking us little people to make sacrifices has really turned off a lot of the public.

I only hope that the failure of this movie and Live Earth is a true sign that people are starting to learn the science and the real agenda behind AGW.

Get Informed or Get Out of the Way
September 5, 2007 - 14:54 ET by takingmyconstitutionalMr. Sheppard has obviously not seen the film. I would suggest that he do so before heaping criticism on it based on assumptions rather than facts.
Take, for example, this statement: "it certainly appears the public has tired of being told by disingenuous, wealthy, hypocritical movie stars that the world is going to come to an end if they don't stop driving automobiles and heating
their homes during winter."
Yes, Leonardo DiCaprio served as a producer, as well as the film's narrator, but the commentary comes from dozens of the world's most stimulating thinkers---ranging from Stephen Hawking to James Woolsey, the former director of the CIA (and no liberal). These commentators talk about a range of environmental challenges---not just climate change.
And far from Mr. Sheppard's nonsense about movie stars who supposedly want us to stop driving and heating our homes (so reminiscent of Ronald Reagan's similarly ignorant comment about "freezing in the dark"), a good chunk of the film is devoted to sustainable technologies that can help---and are helping---humankind to address ecological challenges and leave a more livable planet for our grandchildren.
From my point of view, one of the most maddening things about conservative commentary on environmental challenges is the near-total ignorance of sustainable technologies. But perhaps it's willful ignorance (of a kind, I should note, that James Woolsey does not share). By failing to acknowledge the truly exciting work being done in such areas as renewable energy, green architecture, and sustainable agriculture, it is so much easier for conservative critics to dismiss people who understand the ramifications of our environmental challenges---and in many cases are DOING something about them---as "alarmists," "Luddites," or "anti-progress." We're for progress all right---the kind that emphasizes efficient technologies based on mimicking nature's own methods (try Googling "industrial ecology"), clean air and water, abundant food grown on naturally fertile soil, energy drawn from the sun and wind, and urban areas filled with gardens, parks, rapid transit, and pedestrian-friendly shopping areas (see, for example, Portland, Oregon).
I would suggest that Mr. Sheppard and others of his frame of mind get informed about sustainability or get out of the way. "The Eleventh Hour" is an excellent starting point for getting informed.

September 5, 2007 - 15:59 ET by midnight cowboyThese idiots try to label conservatives as ignorant. Try this on. Being on a cruise ship this past summer the captain and 1st enginner had a Q &A with the guests and in their presentation they were explaing how many thousands of gallons of diesel fuel the ship uses on each voyage. Leave it some enviro-nut to raise her hand and ask the engineer why can't they use other forms of energy to power the ship such as solar. The two men did their best not to laugh in her face, and said you can't get anywhere near the amount of power from solar to power this vessel. This ship is almost 100,000 tons in weight. He did though suggest perhaps giving each guest an oar as they boarded ship.
And these pinko-commies call us ignorant.
You completely miss the
September 5, 2007 - 15:09 ET by Sick-n-TiredYou completely miss the point about 'deniers' of AGW. If you have been here and read the numerous posts, you would see that we all discuss and for the most part agree on renewable energies, however, we take the time to learn about them and their efficiencies. To date, there is no renewable for example, gasoline, that can match the efficiency of its output---not at a price that is cost effective to the average consumer; ethanol is a joke and boon-doggle. We have talked about nuclear, but that is a no-no to you guys as well.
Furthermore, learn the facts on 'global warming'; don't use it as a vehicle to push your agendas. If you agenda is renewables, then do just that, push them as is. AGW and CO2 controls will do nothing but hurt the middle and lower class in this nation and the poor worldwide; in an attempt that is all for none.

Umm, yeah, the numbers don't lie. Noel's point is the movie bombed; it did. That's a fact, not an assumption. Please learn the difference between the two before preaching to us on the complex issue of climatology.
"I would suggest that Mr. Sheppard and others of his frame of mind get

Yeah, if you believe in fairy tales. Leo's flick is an excellent starting point for getting MIS-informed. When you have to lie about the problem, maybe there isn't much of a problem to begin with.

LOL, good for them. Seriously, imagine just how much land would be required for all the solar panels necessary to run just Disney World.
Maybe we should try powering our nation on wishes and rainbows instead. Heck, that would work almost as well as solar and wind.

Where are the ideas?
September 5, 2007 - 21:52 ET by pbthinkerApparently, this movie will do, for Global Warming, what Gore's concerts did, nothing. I'll go along with some of the other Posts, if these people really, really believe, let them put their money where their mouth is and finance companies to build renewable energy, fund research to bring down the cost and increase the efficiency of solar electric panels. I don't believe any of us are adverse to alternative energy sources but, as ethanol is proving, you really have to think these things out and, for the most part, liberals have avoided that step.
Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.
