Be honest: when you saw the news Sunday that a woman was going to be president in the next season of the hit series "24," you smelled something akin to when ABC made a similar announcement concerning "Commander in Chief," and CBS hired Katie Couric.
Well, according to Politico, the failure of both is actually not good news for Hillary Clinton (h/t Hot Air).
But, before we get there, what was also fascinating about this piece was how the producer of "Commander in Chief" admitted a political goal behind casting Geena Davis as the first female president (emphasis added throughout):
When Hollywood producer Rod Lurie created fictional president Mackenzie Allen in 2005 for the show "Commander in Chief" he made no mistake about one of his goals: tilling the soil of popular culture so that it would soon be easier for a real woman to take root in a nonfiction Oval Office.
[...]
Lurie, the creator and executive producer of "Commander in Chief," is strikingly direct that from the first episode of the show he hoped Hollywood could be a lever for changing Washington.
"Those of us who were intimately involved in the show did have the agenda of trying to get a woman in the White House, not necessarily Hillary Clinton but any woman," he says. "What we liked was that the audience kept hearing the term ‘Madame President.'"
Yeah, there's no liberal bias in the media.
Moving forward, ABC's failure at pushing America towards Hillary - certainly, you can't possibly buy Lurie's "not necessarily Hillary" comment - undermines a common media meme concerning her candidacy:
The ratings of both the struggling "CBS Evening News" and the now-canceled ABC drama "Commander in Chief" call into question one of the premises of Clinton's political strategy: that women are eager to reward role models who break down gender barriers.
[...]
An analysis of ratings by Nielsen Media Research for Politico showed that competitors to the "Evening News" and "Commander in Chief" scored better with female viewers. The results undermine calculations by ABC and CBS that placing accomplished women in roles traditionally owned by men would be a ratings hit because of the number of female viewers drawn to one of their own.In particular, white women--a key swing bloc Clinton's campaign says it intends to focus on should she win the nomination--responded with a shrug to both Couric and "Commander in Chief."
Efforts to extrapolate political implications from Hollywood studio sets and network news desks should perhaps be taken cum grano salis. But some commentators say the experiences of Couric and Geena Davis, who played the president on the ABC drama, do indeed offer a cautionary tale for Clinton.
After crunching some current polling data, the article offered the following interesting conclusions:
"Given the historic nature of having a female Democrat running against a socially liberal Catholic Republican, it is remarkable how similar it appears the results would be to the 2004 election in which two white males representing the mainstream politics of the two parties faced off," a mid-June Gallup Poll report found.
"Most notably, it appears Clinton would run no stronger among women than Kerry did in 2004--or, for that matter, than Al Gore did when running against Bush in 2000."
How delicious.

Any of these three would have the necessary prerequisit of character for Senator or Rep.
I believe this is more of an issue of getting over the stereotypes of women in general not being perceived as tough enough without the viciousness (Hillary) to deal with the less than savory leaders in this world. There are too many meglomanics who lie with a straight face giving us Madeline Albright and the Dear Leader of the DPRK with the results of his possession of nuclear weapons and technology. The world is way too dangerous for this delusional "we all should get along and everyone wants to" thinking. World politics comes down a very predictable result, every decade we have to pick out a Saddam Hussein and off him to keep the rest of the lunatics in line and prove we can do exactly what we say. July 23, 2007 - 13:18 ET by dagdaRome was cancelled because of the expense. Deadwood was cancelled because Davil Milch wanted to do a show called John from Cincinnati and HBO told him he would have to give up Deadwood to do it. So he gave up Deadwood. July 23, 2007 - 15:08 ET by Jack Bauerns -- Deadwood was definitely up there.
However, because it was supposedly based on "true events," it committed a cardinal sin in classic storytelling from the Greeks onwards, as laid out by Joseph Campbell.
Having set up the magnificent Ian McShane as an anti-hero of Shakespearean power (I kid you not) it failed to reach a satisfactory resolution in a final battle between Swearengen (McShane) and the Alpha plus villain Hearst.
(There were many villains, not least the anti-hero McShane, but he played Swearengen so well you just rooted for the guy even when he was involved in very dark deeds)
It just copped out. All of a sudden, nothing happened. I was really peeved. Seriously.
For an all-time best-ever TV drama, the 1970s BBC series I, Claudius takes some beating. Also based on historical events, but ultimately satisfying.
I think McShane was in that too. Claudius was played by a young Derek Jacobi.

Cartoon Network used to have a great lineup with "PowerPuff Girls" I would always crack up with Mojo Jojo. I also liked "Dexter's Labratory", they did a spoof on "Speed Racer" one time that was great. For the "Speed Racer" fans, everytime Racer X was on an episode the announcer would say "Unbeknownst to Speed, Racer X is his long lost brother Rex". Who was cooler Racer X or Speed Racer? I almost have to say Racer X. I also liked "Johnny Bravo" and would crackup watching those episodes. Still hard to beat "Top Cat" or "Scooby Do" though in my opinion.

Obviously she's educated and has been an able politician for years, but so are thousands of other people who are far more appealing as a potential president.
She is a repulsive person. She's a master of double-speak. She's loaded with a scandalous past. Her main policy initiative (universal health care) was a huge failure...and may have been the thing that won the 1994 congressional election for the GOP.

Female "leaders" not an accident
July 23, 2007 - 13:34 ET by Lame CherryNone of this is by accident in female socialist "leaders" somehow coming onto the world stage offscreen either. Royale of France was supposed to be Hillary juniorette, but go trounced in setting the stage for Dame Clinton.
So socialist India trots out a female President to get it into the world's minds that females can lead.
Look though at the disaster at CBS with this affirmative action........as stated look at France with Royale being akin to Nancy Pelosi for lack of intelligence and the best India can offer is a woman in a shawl with a religious red dot on her forehead. Sorry liberal left, but I highly doubt the feminazi, Rosie O'Donnells and Christiane's are going to equate this as the kind of woman they want to be like.
This is an international push of socialist women candidates who prove disasters. They are not Golda nor are they Jeanne Kirkpatrick nor are they Thatcher....all women who battled for the job on their own merits and were very good at leadership.
You can not pick out the next Peyton Manning no more than the next Patton by affirmative action. If globalists want women to do their bidding for them they have to get some that are born to leading as what they have now........well Hillary proved she can beat on a husband with lamps and blackmail Congress with FBI files, but that kind of dictatorship gets you kicked out of office in one term.
Liberal women for some reason want the office handed to them.....and that just does not make a good government.

First off, can you cite for me from this article examples of Hillary trashing? I've just re-read it, and don't know what you're referring to.
Furthermore, I think you made a bit of a truly humorous Freudian slip with the following (emphasis added):
With this in mind, exactly who were you accusing of Hillary bashing? :-)

You write: "Using a FICTIONAL TV show to use as a vehicle to trash Hillary..."
You are clearly implying that Noel posted this as a way to give people here an excuse to bash H. Clinton.
Seem like a bit of armchair psychology to me.
So what are your credentials?

My creds: fairly expensives pieces of paper from varying institutions coupled with 25+ years of closely observing the dumbing down of America. It's a hobby.....
SPQR, Gee, I don't know.
July 23, 2007 - 19:10 ET by hydrodynDMSPQR,
Gee, I don't know. Maybe the point of the post was exactly what Noel said it was - to show that efforts by those in the media to get the American public use to the idea of a female president don't seem to be working - particularly among women.
I don't know, man. Maybe you deal with liberals all day and so you're use to people acting and speaking in ways that hide ulterior motives.
But that aside, take a look at just about any post on this website - it doesn't take a genius to see that a post about the media's coverage of, say, abortion will end up turning into a discussion about abortion. Same goes for a post on media coverage of gun control laws or anthropomorphic global warming or whatever.
By your argument, every post about media bias on this site by the contributors is just a thinly veiled excuse to give the members of this site a chance to rip into liberals since that is pretty much what happens all the time.
Oh, and by the way. I've noticed your habit of waving your diplomas around on here - so when I asked for your "credentials", I knew, like a trained puppy, you would act accordingly.

July 24, 2007 - 08:54 ET by dscottI had a hysterically funny discussion with a person on lithium many years ago. He pointed out to me that he has a paper that certifies he is "sane" and I as a normal person did not. What could we both do but laugh at the irony of that. So the question of the day is: Can you prove you are sane? LMAO

July 23, 2007 - 23:04 ET by Noel SheppardSPQR,
I must say that your rants and raves are pretty hysterical. First, you questioned what the motive was for this subject being raised:
Then, after I responded with what most would admit was an attempt at playful repartee - with smiley faces to make the seemingly obvious levity clear - you retorted:
Yet, in your opening, you clearly were addressing the article and not the comments. After all, irrespective of the incorrect wording which we'll get to later, you did indeed write this:
Obviously, "this" was indeed the article. Or, were you suggesting the comments were the mechanism? I quite doubt it.
In fact, when you were challenged by hydrodynDM about this very thing - "You are clearly implying that Noel posted this as a way to give people here an excuse to bash H. Clinton" - you replied:
Hmmm. So, in the following post after you insincerely replied to me "Not the article, the commentaries," you made it clear that it was indeed the article. How nice.
Next, you smugly replied to "hydro's" request for your credentials:
So, let me ask you a question if I may, and, maybe you'll answer this time, because previously you chose not to: How much did you or your parents spend to get these "fairly expensives [sic] pieces of paper from varying [sic] institutions?"
The reason I'm asking is due to the extraordinarily poor writing skills - I'm not even going to broach logic or social acumen - you acquired for your or your parents' money.
After all, in just these three short posts, you amazingly managed to substitute "thigh" for "thing," "illicit" for "elicit," "brokered" for "broached," "giving" for "given," "expensives" for "expensive," "varying" for "various," and "achived" for "achieved." Moreover, you ended a question with a period instead of a question mark. I'm not even going to bother addressing your abysmal grammar and syntax.
Now, I don't normally waste my time correcting people's mangling of the English language. However, when someone questions my credentials as they flaunt their own at the same time showing about as much literary acumen as my children did in grammar school, well, that's where I draw the line.
Of course, you might show some character and class by apologizing for being such a pompous ass. Then, you might be worthy of some respect, and further replies from moi.
Failing that, please express my condolences to your parents for the funds they spent on your supposedly high-priced education. After all, to quote one of my favorite characters, "You wasted $150,000 on an education you coulda got for a buck fifty in late charges at the public library.'
How do you like them apples? ns

As I pointed out in another post, he claimed last week to be an "acredited historian," whatever that means; and a "trained archeologist."
Given his ability to spout fossilized garbage, I might just believe that one.
But I am sure he's a fully fledged, highly trained, totally acredited, and board certified troll.
