Appearing on 'Kudlow Report,' Bozell Hits ABC News for 'October Surprise'-like Attack on Gingrich

By NB Staff | January 20, 2012 | 09:25

A  A

At the very least the timing of ABC News's interview with Gingrich ex-wife Marianne Gingrich is suspect. At the very worst, it is completely inappropriate if it failed to be newsworthy and respectful, NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell told CNBC's Larry Kudlow on his January 19 Kudlow Report.

"In some respects, aren't they obliged to get it out as fast as they can," Kudlow countered, adding that maybe by putting it out the night of the debate, "it actually lessens the impact and significance of the interview." [see video embedded below page break; see related Bozell statement here]

The Media Research Center founder answered that it's possible ABC's ploy could engender a "backlash to this in favor of Newt" because "people are sick and tired of" the media jumping in to attack Republican presidential candidates in ways that are "constantly personal."

"To the question of, is this newsworthy, how do we know?" Bozell asked, noting that it's "one woman's opinion" that is unverifiable. "How do we know that her statement is true?"

More of the same B as in B, S as in S

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 9:51am.

More of the same B as in B, S as in S from the maimstream media.

For Democrats, personal sins have no relevance to fitness to serve. For Republicans, it's the ONLY thing that has any relevance.

There can be simply NO reason they even did this interview, other than to damage Gingrich.

Backlash? Yeah. They are putting me, for one,  back into Newt's camp.

Great to be a Democrat: if you have no moral standards, you can't be ridiculed for failing to live up to them.

Why is no one in the media interested in exploring, perhaps,  his recent conversion to Catholicism?

Maybe he and Callista could go on 60 Minutes and she could put on a fake country accent and tell how she's not just "standin' by her man" but she really believes in his conversion.  And if people don't like it,  wayell, then, jest don't vote for 'im.

Nah.  They wouldn't allow that.  He might come up looking good.

They are shameless.

The MSM are scum

I totally agree, but I have yet to make up my mind if his ex wife is felling the truth or not. I could care less if he wanted an open marriage or not. My beef is somebody is lying about it.

I missed Newt denial. The response from Newt I heard was about the fact that he has admitted his mistakes, not proud of what he did and wants to move on.

Since he is not a Clinton, that may not be enough to excuse him from the issue but I wasn't aware that he was denying the issue.  However, his ex-wife did say she would derail any attempt he made at running for President in an interview and the two daughters aren't exactly supporting their mother in her accusation but they have only given slight support to their father.

I wasn't doubting you just surprised that after reading about ten articles on the subject and hearing a handful of sound bites in the car that they never reported the outright denial.

It still tells me a lot that the daughters seem to be doing their best not to side with either parent while at least giving the appearance of offering some support to their dad.  Mostly, it tells me there is a lot not being said. Newt's personal life and parts of his professional life are not worth defending. If he wins the nomination it will be because he was willing to fight the media and because he convinces the voters he is the least weak candidate.

Newt may do well against Obama in debates but he will suffer greatly in the post debate analysis. Obama will sweep every debate as the 'clear winner' while Newt will handed a couple of consolatory points in the name of 'fairness' for his frank statements.

Disclaimer: I try not to watch to many debates or political speeches. My preference is reading them to prevent as much interference as possible from the message. In other words, I'm easily distracted.

You may want to rethink Marianne Gingrich's side of the story.

According to ABC, Marianne Gingrich became the subject of an FBI sting operation in Paris in the late 1990s, involving an arms dealer working undercover for the U.S. government. The network said the investigation was dropped but that the then-Mrs. Gingrich had claimed that she could “get things done” in Congress and had sought a $500,000 down payment as part of a $10 million bribe to influence her husband.

Marianne Gingrich denied the accusation and blamed it on an unnamed convicted felon.

“This is all made-up, fabricated hogwash,” said the former Mrs. Gingrich, laughing off the suggestion that she had tried to profit from her then-speaker husband’s position. “Heavens, no,” she said, while acknowledging that she had met with the man.

I still support Gingrich over Obama, the story just has my curiosity.

Where's the beef Shawn?

Submitted by Bodini on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 11:24am.

Where's the beef Shawn? In divorce or other contentious areas of life between two parties, there are always three sides to the story. His side, her side, and the truth!

The rub is that Newt's failed marriage is not new news, but an out and out attack by the Marxist-media who once again is not reporting the news, but are stalking an ex-wife for months, and likely paying her, to create the news. This might be tolerable if it wasn't such a shameful exercise to destroy Republicans while ignoring transgressions of Marxist Demwits and failing to report real news stories about the Community Agitator-in-Chief!

The MSM has lost all credibility

Submitted by ohio granny on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 9:58am.

The MSM is just a mouthpiece for the democRat party. They, the same as democRats, will do or say anything to help the democRats. Lie, steal, cheat, doesn't matter as long as they destroy the republicans.

We are onto your games and we don't believe any of you anymore. Alternate media is surging and the reason is no one except morons or the willfully ignorant believe anything the MSM report.

I am totally fine with an open marriage. It is the fact that he left his first wife when she was sick with cancer and the fact there is a 50/50 chance him or his ex wife is lying.

So you're worried about whether a woman who stole a husband from a cancer-stricken wife is heartbroken over her own subsequent breakup with that same man?

What?  Mary Ann Gingrich is shocked that Newt would cheat on her, too?

Leaving a wife that has cancer is old news but still a character issue.

I am also intested in who is lying. Don't get me wrong he would get my vote over Obama but I am still interested nevertheless

Why?

Submitted by Bodini on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 2:00pm.

Why? This is old news. ABC pursued the ex for months to get this story but ignored all of Obama's warts. This wasn't the Jerry Springer show or a social-media page it was a Presidential debate. Regardless of how public ones life is, some things are just none of our business. The right to privacy trumps our need to know all the dirt all the time! Sensationalizing an ex-wife's complaints about her former husband does nothing to fix the problems that face this country!

The Marxist-media remains hell-bent on destroying all things Republican while licking the boots of Obama and ignoring those who are destroying this nation. If you think Facebook, Hollywood, the Marxist-media, JayZ et.al. have bolstered the character of this nation instead of leading the charge for moral decay, you are, sadly wrong.

The guy divorced her over twelve damn years ago. That don't seem so fast to me.
ABC was only trying to skank the Newtster like the Politico did to Herman Cain.
This was just a smear job and last night Jon King disgraced himself in front of America by an obvious and clumsy attempt to embarrass Newt in front of S.Carolina.

Given the MSM's fascination

Submitted by celator on Fri, 01/20/2012 - 12:04pm.

Given the MSM's fascination with the sex lives and trauma of Republican candidates, it's only fair that we demand to know the same of MSM reporters. We want to know about their extramarital affairs,, cocaine use, gambling habits, sexual , er, compulsions, credit scores, salaries, and employment contract language. We need a statement from their ex-spouses to learn the behind closed doors conversations, drinking habits and anything else only ex-spouses know about the person.

We want that information exposed in prime time, in front of the entire nation. And they have 30 seconds to explain themselves.
