As you may have heard by now, or guessed by our poll, the liberal half of FNC's "Hannity & Colmes" is exiting the network stage left at year's end.
For the full story, check out Radio Equalizer's reporting here.
If you were in charge of finding his replacement, whom would you choose?
Kirsten Powers or Juan Williams are names floating around the office here as liberal, yet sensible options for Fox News to choose.
Or should Fox News try to find a more fire-breathing Olbermannesque counterpart, perhaps like James Carville?

Awwww....
November 24, 2008 - 14:43 ET by FinerThingsClubMemberInTrainingI'm going to kinda miss the walking corpse! Frankly, he's much better than Hannity.
As long as we're cleaning shop, can we start with him? I'm sorry and I know I may take some flack for saying this, but the man is very limited intellectually.
You could literally have turned him on on any given point of the day in any given month over the past few and heard one of four or five things:
To me, he is just so damn tiring already.
well you wont get an argument from me

November 24, 2008 - 14:52 ET by CaringwhiteguyFiner - I just posted roughly the same thoughts in the poll thread on this subject. I'd go for Glen Beck on the right. Fox has him signed. If Hannity stays, Fox must be very careful to choose someone who doesn't overshadow him either from a talent or personality standpoint. Therefore, the field is limited.
Don't get me wrong
November 24, 2008 - 14:58 ET by FinerThingsClubMemberInTrainingI'm sure he's quite kind. He seems like a nice person but I just can't watch the show (either of them).
I have a love/hate with Beck. Does anyone else get the feeling that he's bipolar or something? I'm no shrink but his mood swings are unbearable. I find him very entertaining, esp when him and Stu pal around.
But there are times, Oh my, when I'm listening to him driving into work, I find myself almost veering into a tree.
Maybe it has something to do with the alcoholism but personality wise, he's really over the place.
My pick, Beck would be cool (despite what I said above--I'd still prefer him over Hannnity), but how about Meg Kelly. She can come out of the closet as the Republican we all know she is.
Seriously, not to be crude, but I'm a chick (obviously a conservative one at that) but I would even come out of the closet for her ;)
Naw, I think she's just great. Fiercely smart, attractive and great personality. All the things that make the libs either sob or pout.

November 24, 2008 - 16:34 ET by misterbillSince Nov 5th-- my viewing time of "current events" has gone down appreciably. I do still watch Lou Dobbs 3-4 nights and BOR 2 nights. I tend now to watch old movies, pretend all is right in America and that my retirement is not threatened.
I get angry very quickly since 11/4 too. I hear a talking head on TV make some asinine statement and I trun to themovie channels to calm me down. I watch tje History and Military channels alot. I pretend the liberals are the enemies and the conservatives are the American forces. That way in my fugue state, we win all the time.
I hope the media starts to remake old westerns so the good guys always win.

November 24, 2008 - 16:46 ET by Dee Bunkexcept I'm avoiding Television even more. I only watch Desperate Housewives and I'll start watching Lost in Jan. I can stand to hear any talk about Obama and his thugs.
I'm watching lots of movies (none by any of the angry obnoxious Hollywood people).
I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that our country is gone as we've known it and I'm just making the best of my life with my family. What ever "goodies" that Obama has to offer, I'm going to take full advantage of.
We are going to be the New Venuzuella where the crowds & the media "support" their leader and no one will ever know any different views.

November 24, 2008 - 17:11 ET by misterbillI am incapable of putting blinders on-- I am too hyper to do that, so as you stated in your post, I have turned more inward to my family. I spend more time making my granddaughter laugh. I spend more time making my sweet Debbie laugh and restating my absolute love and need for her. I focus more on the Falcons' games that I attend at home games with my friend and co-spectator of 35 years.
However, my mind is a very restless place. I still try to evaluate the bad things that can happen and how to avoid them.
This may shock you, but I have come to be glad that Obama won. I discovered that I detest McCain and his self-styled definition of "maverick". Although Sarah Palin is not a veteran, I have great respect for her and she was the reason that I could lie to myself and vote against Obama. If you have the time, you may want to read this article by Joseph Farah. I found myself in agreement with it.
http://www.creators.com/opinion/joseph-farah/why-mccain-is-worse-than-obama.html
I believe we are in for hellish times and Obama (perhaps no one) is truly able to fix it. I am concerned about violence, the worsening of our economy based on all factors. I shall pass from this sphere unable to understand why most churches and businesspersons are so anxious to destroy our beloved country and disrespect our sovereignty.
I do not want to give up the fight, but I am so tired of it. I need a rest. I'll bet, over the past year, most of us here at NB have undergone a load of stress.
God grant us all, peace of mind. Let us enjoy the holidays as best we can and not lose sight of the real intent of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Mr. Bil -it's been 8 yrs of stress
November 24, 2008 - 18:22 ET by Dee Bunklistening to the hateful leftists trashing our country and our President and the media going along and making it mainstream to think that way.
It's a relief not to have to listen to their hateful rants on Bush and Republicans anymore. It's sad but the only way to have peace is to let the liberals rule. And I don't mean world peace -they won't achieve that - but things will be less contentious here because Republicans don't have the bully pulpit of the media and they don't generally get as nasty.
It's very sad. I don't think there is going to be huge differences that we notice in our day to day lives under Obama, but we are going to have a slow trickle of losing many of the freedoms we previously enjoyed. We've already lost a great deal of Free Speech with campaign finance and we are going to continue to lose more.
I agree, in a way I am relieved that McCain didn't win because he would have been trying too hard (like Bush) to get along. The Dems have no interest in getting along unless they are in power and even then it's pretty limited. Unfortunately the judges that Obama appoints will be with us forever. I really wish McCain would have won & had only one term. Obama will be here for a min of 2 terms (I could see him trying to change the limits).
Every Republican needs to learn a lesson from both Bush and McCain that it doesn't matter how much you kiss up to liberals -they will stab you in the back and have you tarred and feathered for political gain. They have no decency or code of conduct. They are completely single minded & focused on power and nothing else matters.
The only good thing is that it appears that Iraq could be strong enough that Obama's "pull-out no matter what" policy may not cause a disaster there.

Sheer Insannity's other go to line (actually, he does have several, and he manages to beat them all to death) is "embolden."
I find particularly grating the way he hands out radio advertising trade-out gift certificates and makes it seem he is such a giver. What a foney!
It doesn't make any difference who takes the place of Mr. Colmes. That person will never get equal time, they will be interrupted either by Sheer Insannity or the go to break music when starting to make a cogent point - waste of time.
One might as well play for the Washington Generals. Except that the Globetrotters were always a very, very good team. Sheer Insannity is just a bully.

Maybe you should demonstrate for us how Sean Hannity - who constantly whines about the "mean-spirited Left" (of which you are a shining example) - is a bully.
I don't know what H&C YOU have been watching - I seriously doubt you have watched a single nanosecond of Fox News as you constantly show you cannot handle anything that challenges your State-centered worldview - but I see nothing but an exchange of ideas on the set. (For the record, I probably haven't watched a single show of H&C since about 2005 or so for reasons I indicate below.)

Your comment is stupid. You accuse me of not having the stomach to watch Faux Noise and then tell us (TMI) that you haven't seen Insannity & Colmes in years?
And, yes, Insannity is an obvious bully. And liar. Toss in hypocrite, as well. He bemoans the vicious left and then has Ann Falter on as a guest...
For NB's Stalinist
November 25, 2008 - 17:07 ET by UnsaneYour naming of him, original? You haven't a single original thought in your head. Hell, your criticisms of Hannity are not only unoriginal, but not provable. You just whine he is a bully, a liar and a hypocrite without once providing any evidence to BACK this; and you must, as your word here simply is NOT the Holy Writ.
Your comment is stupid. You accuse me of not having the stomach to watch Faux Noise and then tell us (TMI) that you haven't seen Insannity & Colmes in years? Read slightly more carefully. I have not seen an entire show since 2005. What I HAVE seen are some clips and interviews from time to time, but not an entire show in a setting. Before 2005, H&C was routine viewing for me. (This would be far more than you have seen of H&C ever, making my comment simply brilliant.) Even so, I have seen more of FOX News than you have...I doubt you have seen a single nanosecond of it. Being a good little Leftist, you are told that it is this evil channel that actually will occasionally ask a question fromt he Right's point of view. Being the Stalinist Leftist that you are, who CANNOT tolerate the views of others and routinely demands that anyone who opposes your world view SHUT UP and permanently so, you hate FOX News without even bothering to tune in to see WHY you hate it.
Again, you don't get away that easily.
When has Hannity lied (I require specifics, YOUR own words only please)?
When has Hannity been a bully (I require specifics, YOUR own words only please)?
When has Hannity been a hypocrite (I require specifics, YOUR own words only please)?
But thank you for calling me Insane. I'm...deeply (wipes tear from eye)...touched. (sniff)

As an aside, Hannity is talking about colmes right now on his radio show, he says this decision is Alan's alone adn he can't believe all the rumors going around about this...says they will be talking it about it on tonight's show.

I think Alan...
November 24, 2008 - 16:31 ET by Wilbur747has drunk the Kool-aid about FNC being only a conservative mouthpiece and secretly just can't stand that his views are challenged. I think he's looking for greener, more liberal friendly pastures...like maybe ALL THE OTHER NETWORKS!
I've wathced the show for a long time and I find that Alan always resorts to pointing to other people's wrong-doings to justify his party's wrong-doings.
The new left is not Colmes, he's an old head in the party...it's Dowd, Rhodes, Franken(stein) and others.
'The Govt must take care of me and I don't have to take responsibily.' It is after all, everyone else's fault.
That's their motto
I think I read he will have a FNC Weekend show
November 24, 2008 - 23:38 ET by iiiireader.... so I don't think he is leaving Fox. Maybe he wants to reduce his income so the big O won't tax him too much.

Comments
November 24, 2008 - 15:53 ET by UnsaneFOX has picked a stable of Leftists that I can actually listen to because they argue with some reason, at least. I disagree vehemently with the likes of Juan Williams or Mara Liasson but precisely because they (for just two examples I can think of) aren't angry, screaming Leftists out to spew as much vitriol as possible, I can at least sit down and hear what they have to say.
Though Alan Colmes was routinely slapped around by Sean Hannity, Colmes I could at least listen to for the same reason. If FOX does get a replacement for him, they need to find one like him: for with any luck we can get an exchange of ideas out of it.
This being said: early on I used to be a huge fan of H&C. What killed it for me? Their increasingly taking on more and more sensationalistic stories that the MSM in general beat to death, rather than topics firmly within their scope (politics, foreign relations). Now I am much less a frequent viewer of the program.
Please for the love of all that is good in the world keep that egomaniacal Socialist blithering idiot Olberdork the HELL away fro FOX News...

Gingrich vs Maddow
November 24, 2008 - 15:57 ET by TocanoI know it's just a fantasy but I'd love to see Newt Gingrich, one of the most well spoken and "point driven" speakers go against the supposed best and brightest of the left in someone like Rachel Maddow (or at least someone with the same kind of eloquence and having the respectability of the left).
Here are a couple of other matchups I'd love to see:
Neil Cavuto vs Thomas Friedman
Glenn Beck vs Paul Krugman
Meg Kelly vs Maureen Dowd/Ariana Huffington
Karl Rove vs James Carville
(or possibly better) Dick Morris vs James Carville
How about...
November 24, 2008 - 16:03 ET by Wilbur747Gingrich vs Randi Rhodes?
Love the Maureen Dowd match up but would prefer Gingrich or Beck on that one.
I harp on Randi Rhodes cuz she has such a large following and really does represent the new left.
Possibly
November 24, 2008 - 16:09 ET by TocanoI'm not that familiar with Rhodes, so that might work. The thing that I liked about the Meg Kelly matchup was the ... pitting a strong woman against those that supposedly represent feminists. :)
And I have a lot of respect for Gingrich, so I'd like him to go against the very best the left has. Dowd or Huff. would almost seem a waste for him.
I'm not sure about Meg...
November 24, 2008 - 17:01 ET by Wilbur747at times she sounds conservative, at others she's a lib. Good idea for a journalist. Objectivity.
I agree, she's strong but again, I'm unsure of her true politics.
Rhodes is a new voice of the left. She has gotten in trouble for her comments, but doesn't care and will say anything to get her agenda known and the libs let her comment slide.
Maybe if AMerican see the new lib/dems, they'll come home to our side.
Agreed
November 24, 2008 - 17:22 ET by TocanoOk, I'm not really familiar with her politics either, just seen her numerous times and always been a fan when I did. How about, as someone reminded me below, we substitute Laura Ingraham in for Meg against Dowd or Huffington?
OMG!!!
November 24, 2008 - 19:43 ET by Wilbur747Right on! How could I EVER foget Miss Laura? She can get so riled up when she confronts a lib.
Imagine, Laura vs...anyone!
I'd love to see her against any lib women or men! But I digress, we're supposed to be talking about Alan's replacement.
Any bets that Laura will get her own full time show on FNC?
Go Laura!
I agree...
November 24, 2008 - 17:06 ET by Wilbur747You're right, Dowd and Huff is a waste for Gingrich.
Huff is a real loser.. She has no credability. One day she's a Rep, the next a lib, the next an indep.
Huff is irrelevent. Gingrich is a hard match.

November 24, 2008 - 17:19 ET by TocanoLaura Ingraham is a great one. Don't know how I spaced thinking of her. Hasselback, god love her, just isn't up to a good arguer and Greta is often liberal in her views. November 24, 2008 - 19:32 ET by JerIf the management of Fox and the network's audience prefer a continuation of the traditional "skewed-to-the-right" H&C format, a liberal-lite in-house replacement would suffice, e.g. Kirsten Powers, Greta Susteren, Mort Kondracke, Juan Williams, etc. If a few more sparks were desired, Bob Beckel would be a possible choice.
Personally, a more level playing field, balanced agenda, and a formidable liberal advocate/debater such as Joe Conason, Paul Begala, or Al Hunt would be very appealing as a counter to Hannity (or Beck, Coulter, Ingraham, et al). Frankly, it's a dynamic that Fox and the other cable news networks should employ. [Much like CNN's defunct Crossfire and Capitol Gang.]

November 24, 2008 - 19:59 ET by bigtimerHere are President Bush's latest Pardons.
Note the words at the end of this cute by half article...seems to be attempting to give him a warning, and by God he had better listen.

Hi Ruk... Yeah, that is
November 24, 2008 - 20:14 ET by bigtimerHi Ruk...
Yeah, that is why I was interested to see who was on the list also...hoping they would be there.
Just doesn't look like it is going to happen, there is still time yet if he makes more.

Hi BT,
November 24, 2008 - 20:20 ET by RukusYeah, I'm thinking why do good people get thrown in jail for doing their jobs, and then at the same time scumbags get to walk free, you know where my thinking is considering the past two weeks. I hope they get pardoned, they deserve better.

Re: Ramos & Compean
November 26, 2008 - 12:56 ET by j. frank wilsonThe best single article I've read about this is "Badges of Dishonor" by Pamela Colloff (Texas Monthly). It is reprinted, with a coda, in The Best American Crime Reporting 2008.
Tt comes as no surprise to me that she received positive feedback about her work from Border Patrol agents.
Don't believe everything you heard about that case from Lou Dobbs or WorldNetDaily.

Excellent choice...I always enjoy listening to him, unfortunately he is another guest who is constantly talked over...it drives me crazy...I have always found him a very fascination guy, I like to hear his view of life, and learn from him..if I could just hear all he is trying to say!

He's impressed me a few
November 24, 2008 - 20:58 ET by Dan DiegoHe's impressed me a few times, I've seen him call out the mindless libs parroting DNC talking points. Appears he thinks for himself.
Of course he lacks that "eye candy" appeal which would probably disappoint many and hurt ratings.

No shortage of...
November 24, 2008 - 23:12 ET by m4ster chiefI have no opinion on this since I watch no TV news or talk shows, but from what I see on the web, there is no shortage of extreme leftist, biased, close-minded, obnoxious, and goofy looking liberals to pit against Hannity. It should be no problem finding a self-righteous, egotistical nitwit since they crave exposure and apparently have no idea how silly they look and act.
But I want to be constructive here, so I'll suggest a couple of lefties with fairly high degrees of maturity and gravitas (to use one of their terms,) to the extent, of course, those qualities can be found in liberals. So I recommend two individuals that display, as much as possible, those two traits: Joy Behar or Rosie O'Donnell.
Thank you very much. I hope I have helped.

I say fox should offer...
November 25, 2008 - 01:06 ET by MightyMouththe olberloon twice his salary to get dunked in the tank by Hannity and (any conservative guest). I would pay-per-view to see Ann Coulter rip the Kiefer a new one.

If I had to put money on it...
November 25, 2008 - 02:33 ET by Michael30I suppose my guess would if Fox wanted to get some talent from outside their usual stable of commentators, they'd get the ones that were pro-Obama in the election. Therefore, I would watch for someone like Roland Martin and Donna Brazille from CNN, or perhaps as someone (mr.bill) suggested; Robert Zimmerman. That would seem to make sense if you are trying to "poach" some new viewers from CNN. Let's be honest, they already got Mr. Beck, so they may try to fish from the other side of the pond as well.
If they want to stay "in house" for their talent, I'd guess that someone like Juan Williams or even look for Al Sharpton (I'm not joking, he's been on BOR for a long time and probably wouldn't mind the exposure these days.)
Now that the election is over, these people are gonna want to attack the "loyal opposition" (in this case, the conservatives) so it wouldn't surprise me to see any of those people taking over for Mr. Colmes to defend President-elect Obama on perhaps the only cable outlet that won't give him a free pass on everything.
I am likely wrong on this, but at the moment, those choices seem logical to me.

Colmes' Replacement
November 25, 2008 - 06:28 ET by kiwikitA agree with Frankin but can he limit his vocabulary to the acceptable? Not funny, not smart, but alive: a perfect replcement for Colmes. Only thing missing is that NO ONE ever says that HE is a nice guy.
I, too, have decreased my interest in politics. Gave up CSPAN when it went all DNC all the time with the screaming 'RAT callers on all lines bashing Bush years ago. I find little difference between their talk shows and NPR. The only thing we watch regularly is SPECIAL REPORT. I even find myself cutting back my surfing significantly. I've no admiration for 'RATs and find that their past history in the seat of power has resulted in destroyed cities, worthless education system with the rich teachers and ignorant children, and corrupt politicians but. . . Since almost half of our population is on the dole for multiple generations, may or may not be capable of getting jobs but too lazy to try, have no skin in the game since they contribute NOTHING to the country and these are the 'RAT voter base, they have incentive to keep things just as they are. They hate America and have made much of America worthy of that hate. God Bless our troops and GWB!
Maddow and Bruce
November 25, 2008 - 08:53 ET by BlueCat57I say replace Colmes with Rachel Maddow and Hannity with Tammy Bruce. It would bring the sexual tension that is lacking in the Hannity and Colmes match up. I'd reactivate my satellite to watch that live daily. (I cut off my subscription for two reasons: pretty much everything on the air is crap and you can get most of it for free online. Why pay for the cow when you can get the cream for free?)
Kirsten Powers gets my vote
November 25, 2008 - 10:22 ET by ckbennetttnShe's a liberal I can tolerate. She doesn't just carry the water for the Democrat party. Plus, let's face it, she's pretty hot.
“I am the latte-sipping, New York Times-reading, Volvo-driving, no-gun-owning, effete, politically correct, arrogant liberal.” --Barack Obama
Not Kirsten Powers. I'm
November 25, 2008 - 10:49 ET by soulpileNot Kirsten Powers. I'm begging all that is holy not her! She's worse than Alan. When she guest hosts I go insane. (Now we know why they had a lot of guest hosts recently - maybe trying out replacements?) Juan Williams, though, I could watch. He's come a long way and actually thinks most of the time.
Hannity is ok, a little better than O'Reilly, but he still hangs on to issues for way too long. He seems to do better on Hannity's America, though.
O'Reilly is a Joke
November 25, 2008 - 14:53 ET by kwiebeThey'll never tinker with his show as long as he remains their cash cow, but damn I can't watch O'Reilly. There are lots of attractive, non-egocentric, intelligent conservatives out there. We shouldn't have to settle for Hannity and O'Reilly.

Hannity is One Who Needs Replacing
November 25, 2008 - 14:45 ET by kwiebeDon't get me wrong, I agree ideologically with Hannity. But I also agree with some others here that he's weak intellectually. And I know he probably has a financial incentive to do so, but I got tired of him mentioning his damn hybrid about 10,000 times ago. Please Hannity, STOP mentioning you drive a hybrid -- WE DON'T CARE and it's not the drop-dead shocker you think it is! Get Rich Lowry to replace Hannity and I don't care who for Alan...maybe Kirsten for some much-needed liberal eye candy to make up for ten years of Colmes?
But I also agree with some
November 25, 2008 - 14:55 ET by Jack BauerYeah -- but Hannity'ss only running a TV and Radio show.
Nancy Pelosi is running the House, third in line to the Presidency.
