Advertisers 'Glenn Beck' Newspapers

  • Bookmark and Share

While the media focuses on the tens of advertisers that left Glenn Beck, another segment of the public has spoken out of their wallet. Newspapers, who have spoon fed the progressive movement to the United States for the last several decades will now have to do with $2.8 BILLION DOLLARS less than they took in at this time last year. That's a quarterly result.

Newspapers will blame the Internet but if there were any value in the product advertisers would be there. The people have spoken and if newspapers don't want to ask the hard questions we don't want the product. Online or off.

That was in the newspaper when I was a little kid.  A one-frame cartoon.  I was just receving an allowance and my Dad cut it out and gave it to me when he handed me my very first one dollar bill for the week.  I still have that yellowed cartoon in my wallet.

I called to cancell my

I called to cancel my subscription to the Houston Chronicle this week and they asked why I was cancelling.  I told them they continuously and egregiously slant stories to the liberal side of the issues and that the overwhelming majority of their columnist openly mock conservative viewpoints.  The lady at the Chronicle said "I've been hearing that a lot".  It's clear they know the reason for loss in subscribership.

I did that over 15 years

I did that over 15 years ago truthmatters, good for you!  I sure miss the old Houston Post.

I'd like to see a solid

I'd like to see a solid quality conservative based paper hit the local market(s).  I think there is significant puplic support for such a paper and a generous profit could be made.  I don't buy the "the internet is taking away our customers" argument.  Apply the Foxnews model to the print media. Again, I'm in one of those "...if I only had the money to invest, I could make a killing" situations.

"apply the foxnews model to the print media"

it's called the new york post, a murdoch paper.

Good point.  I guess I'm

Good point.  I guess I'm thinking more locally.

We should support the companies...

I did the same - canceled my subscription to Aviation Week and told them I was tired of seeing left wing, Global Warming propaganda and no articles with dissenting views.

I really think we should try hard to support the companies that stuck with Beck; and be vocal about it to others.  Let's show them we appreciate their willingness to stand alongside the truth...

No worries

they'll just get a bailout from Obama, so we'll all be paying for the newspapers whether we want to or not.  At least the payoffs and conflicts of interest will become official.

Truth

Truth, if you think the Houston Chronicle is biased, you ought to try the Corpus Christi Caller Times. I finally canceled my subscription. I told them I wasn't afraid of opposing opinions, but I could no longer financially support an entity that had so little regard for my opinion. It was a very cleansing moment. I also told them that if they could find and hire just one conservative editor on their staff that I would reinstate my subscription. Based on the tripe the print daily it is obvious they are having trouble with my challenge.

Courage is not the absence of fear, it's the mastery of it.

For my fellow Texan

I cannot tell you the last time I bought a single edition of the San Antonio Express-News.  As for the Houston Comical...I am ashamed to say I bought a Sunday edition two years ago.  But I badly needed the wrapping paper for my ceramic items when I moved everything into storage.

The Daily News called for me to re-up (I cancelled some time ago) and I told them I was tired of the liberal slanted lies and she loses it on me, "Don't blame me. I don't write it!" and hangs up.

I toy with the caller by asking why they dropped the B.C. comic strip (they hated the Christian themes), or how come they have added Molly Ivans as a columnist right after Bush took the oath of office (to have yet another critical opinion peice every week).  It doesn't take them long to get frustrated and give up. ;-)

It will be great to see the San Antonio Express-News go under just  to see Carlos Guerra (among other Leftists and Socialists) hit an unemployment line.

Its the internet for sure

Why waste money on a newspaper subsciption for day old news, when you can get current up to date news within seconds on the intenet. You don't even have to be at home, it can be accessed on a BlackBerry or the Iphone. I don't know of any Conservative Newspapers or Liberal Newspapers that have not suffered losses the past few years.

I buy one Newspaper a week and that is when I eat Sunday Brunch with my family, because it is more content,  but also because of all the coupons and advertising.

"I swear sometimes the self-appointed moral police are as obnoxious and demanding of big government interference as "environmentalist" gun control advocates, labor unions and trial lawyers"~fitzfong

There is still room for newspapers

Why waste money on a newspaper subsciption for day old news, when you can get current up to date news within seconds on the intenet.  You get in-depth analysis and CAN get good, solid commentary in a newspaper.  And oh by the way, the Internet can "crash".  It can go "down".  The newspaper does not. You don't even have to be at home, it can be accessed on a BlackBerry or the Iphone.  And they can still be "down" or can still "crash".   I don't know of any Conservative Newspapers or Liberal Newspapers that have not suffered losses the past few years.  There is still PLENTY of room for newspapers.

I have an iPhone and get news from the Internet like anyone else, but I also use the ancient device known as the radio, and have print subscriptions to The Economist.  Why do I do this in spite of the Internet?  Content.  You give me the content, I will go after it.  You don't, I walk.

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

I get news from the Internet

I get news from the Internet and radio. That's about it. I buy newspapers on Sunday, mainly because I like the crossword puzzle, but I will read it, too. I like newspapers, but they're not necessary to our lives these days.

Content

I like newspapers, but they're not necessary to our lives these days.  Nor is radio, yet radio programming and radio stations are ubiquitous.  Why?  Content.

There is a ton of room for newspapers, if they work on the content aspect.  The only reason I have subscriptions to The Economist and National Geographic is content.

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

I can only speak for myself,

I can only speak for myself, but radio news remains part of my life because of where it is: in the car. Otherwise, I wouldn't listen.

Ditto for me Bal

When I am not listening to my MP3 player, I listen to Liberal Stephanie Miller  for the drive to work and Conservative Mark Levin on the way home from work, otherwise I would  not listen to them at all

Shawn

The only thing on my radio is the station with the 80s music.I get my news from the internet.I do buy the Bugtuselle  Express once in a while but it is mainly local news.

Listen to radio in a car?

Interesting.  I don't even do that.  That's what my CDs are for.

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

Yes the internet can go down

....and if it goes down I will buy a newspaper. I think my internet goes down maybe once or twice a year, so me or a 100 people buying 2 Newspapers a year that cost 25 to 50 to buy will not make much difference to the bottom line.

Content has little to do with the decline of Newspapers, because liberals bought there fair share of newspapers as well, they don't buy them now because the content on the internet is updated and free

edit

I also never said there was not room for Newspapers, I am saying the decline of Newpapers has much more to do with the internet than content

"I swear sometimes the self-appointed moral police are as obnoxious and demanding of big government interference as "environmentalist" gun control advocates, labor unions and trial lawyers"~fitzfong

I still disagree

That doesn't explain the discrepancy in cable news. Fox beats CNN and MSNBC combined, so obviously something is going on. Also, I read Ann Coulter's articles online every week but I still buy her books in print. Create a demand and people will want it.

If a newspaper had appealing content I couldn't get anywhere else, I would pay for it.

Sorry Candance

TV is a different creature altogether. Now if you gave me a example of conservative newspaper that is doing exceptionally and has not had a hit in subscibers the past 5 years, then I can see your point.

You can view many of Ann Coulters online and don't need to buy a newspaper to view them. I used to have a one delivered to me everyday, now I am wireless with a laptop, I can take it with me anywhere I can take the Newspaper with me with one exception, and I am not going to elaborate on that ;-)

Content is 100% of the problem

It is ALL about the content.  EVERYTHING in media is about content.  I don't hit websites without it.  You think I'd be on NB if it lacked content?

Did television kill radio?  The Buggles to the contrary, video did not kill the radio star.  They in fact exist alongside each other.  Radio does perfectly well today in spite of massive competition from other sources.  The major broadcast networks have adapted to a world of cable and satellite channels numbering in the hundreds.  About the only think I can think that the Internet has truly killed is shortwave radio, and even then, I still think some places still do it (though I know for a fact that CBC killed their shortwave programming in March 1996, much to the chagrin of some friends of mine, and I).

If newspapers have content, they will be fine.  You and balboa should be aware that about 20 years ago, AM radio was all but dead.  What saved AM radio?  Content.  Specifically, some people out there - like Rush Limbaugh -  saw that while AM radio was not that great for music broadcasts, it was perfect for talk radio.  Hence the resurrection of AM radio began.  All due to content.

One way newspapers can stave off extinction is, again, by content.  Some small town papers around where I live do just fine by exclusively, obsessively reporting on local events, rarely even reporting on the state level.  Another example of content saving the day.

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

Radio is live and not in print...

...and is very current and up to date. Talk show radio also has listeners calling in and expressing their views.

Like I said to candance, perhaps you can name a newspaper that has gained advertisers and not lost subscribers in the past five years.

"I swear sometimes the self-appointed moral police are as obnoxious and demanding of big government interference as "environmentalist" gun control advocates, labor unions and trial lawyers"~fitzfong

Content, content, content

Shawn, newspapers have been losing ground LONG before that.  But again, I will point you at that word you seem to have difficulty with: CONTENT.

The year I was born, my hometown had three newspapers: the Express, the News, and the Light.  The Express and the News merged in 1984, leaving San Antonio with two newspapers.  For awhile, my family got both newspapers: while we thought the Express-News was the better paper - and it was by many light years - we HAD to get the Light every Sunday because it carried a better crossword puzzle for my old man (he has been addicted to those things since basically ever).  This gave me an opportunity at a young age to see what the word "content" meant.  The Express-News actually offered real stories.  The Light?  Their Sunday papers were pure crap.  The Sunday front page section had ONE human interest story as a headline, some other minor stories, and once you got past page two, it was NOTHING but advertising.  It was clearly the inferior of the two due to pure and simple content, and as a betting man - or boy - in my teens, I saw the writing on the wall.  I had already heard of newspapers becoming one-newspaper towns and decided that of either of those two papers would fold, it would be the Light.  Sure enough, in January 1993, the Light was switched off.

I am sure the Light could have remained, if they had gotten off their asses and worked on the content and not served up newspapers that were 90% advertising.  But they didn't, so they got burned.  The same thing is happening to the Express-News.  I'd be more than happy to buy one if it had good content.

Yes, they are not up-to-date instantaneously, but there is something to be said for that.  When time passes, instead of having a dumbass reporter endlessly speculating on the air just to fill the time, or to beat a story to death needlessly, a newspaper can take the time to gather the facts and give them a bit of analysis (if done right it can reveal spectacular results).  Just because something can be updated instantaneously does not necessarily make it a good thing.  It CAN be but I'd argue there is something to be said for throwing on the brakes and actually gathering information and having the guts to just shut up and say "we will get back to you with more information".

There is still PLENTY of room for newspapers.  They just need that silly thing called CONTENT.  Not even radio would exist today without it.  You cannot have a successful communication/entertainment media without CONTENT.  Beginning, end.

By the way:

Advantages to radio: up to date, extremely current

Disadvantages: not NEARLY complete enough or thorough

Again, AM radio was all but dead 20 years ago?  What saved it?

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

Late to the party, but you

Late to the party, but you make the point well, Unsane. Some will say that, in the age of the Internet, newspapers decline by their very nature. They neglect that CONTENT is the determining factor. Someone (Shawn228, I believe) makes the dare to find a "conservative" paper that has increased publication, thinking thereby to illustrate that it's not the liberal slant of newspapers that has been their undoing. What's missing from this equation is his own theory that all papers have lost numbers due to the Internet. There's no way to control for that, and get some "liberal vs. conservative" net Net loss (pun intended). And, many papers have Internet sites. So, it's not just the Internet's speed and ubiquitous presence.

What's also missing is the fact that there are no truly conservative papers left in any really major market. A better comparison might be National Review to, say, Time or better yet, Newsweek. This would have to be a percentage of circulation, since NR has never achieved the kind of circulation numbers of Time or Newsweek. But I'd be willing to bet it's lost way less than either, percentage-wise. It may have even gained.

Bottom line, it's the CONTENT of news media that determines their success or failure. That includes newspapers, radio stations, web sites, etc.

Finally, I'm with you on the reading on the throne thing. Get in, do what's necessary, and get out. Of course, growing up there were seven of us sharing one facility.  ;^)

Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for life. Give a man a fish, and he'll be back tomorrow asking for another. The following day, he'll lead a march demanding the fish to which he's "entitled." And the next day, Wolf Blitzer will be wondering why you hate people who can't fish. - Me

Not really

In the age of radio, newspapers didn't decline. In the age of TV, newspapers didn't decline. But what coincided with the age of the Internet? Horribly biased reporting, agenda-driven coverage.

A journalist should be wise enough to see what is going on around them. They should not be surprised that the public doesn't want what they are shoveling.

"But what coincided with

"But what coincided with the age of the Internet? Horribly biased reporting, agenda-driven coverage".

It also coincided with the age of instant real time news. When Michael Jackson or Ted Kennedy died, I did not need to read the tv or the 8 hour lag from a Newspaper to tell me, I knew almost from the moment the deaths made public.

"I swear sometimes the self-appointed moral police are as obnoxious and demanding of big government interference as "environmentalist" gun control advocates, labor unions and trial lawyers"~fitzfong

CONTENT is king

When Michael Jackson or Ted Kennedy died, I did not need to read the tv or the 8 hour lag from a Newspaper to tell me, I knew almost from the moment the deaths made public.  Really, you NEEDED the Internet for that?  My Shahinshah, how did we EVER find out news instantaneously without the Internet?  I mean, radio and television are just so painfully slow!!!

Did it take you a week to find out that, say, the Challenger blew up?  I mean, that happened before the Internet was widespread!

Again: CONTENT.  If newspapers provide CONTENT, there will plenty of room for them.

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

Still disagree Unsane

I am not saying it has nothing to do with content, I'm saying it is a small factor. You on the other hand say it is 100 percent content. Really? You don't believe the internet has anything to do  with it?

For example you and I both grew up in the eighties, Do you remember how many people had a TV Guide subscription? Or bought it almost every week? I knew many. Now I cannot think of one person, because you can find the listings for free on the internet and similar articles on E-Online. Sports Illustrated which has declined as well, including their infamous swimsuit issue.

Newspapers also have less advertisers new because not many people are buying space in their want ads anymore, because of sites like E Bay or Craigs List. I know for myself and many of friends, the reason why we don't buy newspapers anymore is because of the internet and other competitive factors like tv and 24 hour news channel on cable. So for you to say the reason for the decline of newspapers is 100 percent content imo is wrong.

Hi Shawn

"I still disagree that content is the main factor for the decline of the newspaper..."

How do you explain the demise of Air America? Couldn't have been content right?

Obvioulsy people want to hear lies and bullsh*t over  facts and reasoned argument??

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

Hi MM

Air America Sucked and was trash, just like the FOX's half hour news hour. TV has everything to do with content.

Newspapers cost money and are bulky and have to thrown away, internet is free, updated and many good news blogs

"I swear sometimes the self-appointed moral police are as obnoxious and demanding of big government interference as "environmentalist" gun control advocates, labor unions and trial lawyers"~fitzfong

So the WSJ doesn't...

...cost money and is not bulky and doesn't get thrown away and doesn't have internet competition (it's own website)??

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

Come on MM

I have conceded the point about one newspaper out of thousands,  your the one that came up with the Air America example remember?

All I am saying is the internet is the reason I only buy a Sunday Newspaper instead of a having a daily subscription and many people I know feel the same way.

"I swear sometimes the self-appointed moral police are as obnoxious and demanding of big government interference as "environmentalist" gun control advocates, labor unions and trial lawyers"~fitzfong

Okey Dokey! :-)

"There are two types of people in this country; those who provide freedom and those who enjoy it." MM says...

Advantages, disadvantages

Newspapers cost money?  You don't say!   What, is the Internet free?  Since when was that?

The Internet is bulky.  In order to access it, I have to use a PC, and it is tethered to a power source.  Or, I could use a laptop...tethered to wi-fi Internet access, and if the battery runs out, I have to plug it into a wall.  Sure, I have an iPhone, but it does not have infinite power, and even now I am limited to what I can do online.  (For instance, I cannot type NB responses on the iPhone.)

All forms of media have advantages and disadvantages.  A newspaper can be carried anywhere and read anywhere, so long as you have light.  And if done right, it can carry analysis, and because the news is so intolerably old when it gets into print, newspaper reporters can be forced to assemble all of their facts and information before presenting it to the public.  In some instances this is better than watching a bloviating dumbass reporter: "I'm not gonna speculate, but..." on and on for eight hours, adding absolutely nothing new, and just burning up airtime.

"CONSUMED DEMOCRACY RETURNS A SOCIALIST REGIME" - Slayer, "Fictional Reality", from Divine Intervention (1994)

When you put it like that, a WSJ subscription seems right up my mizer ally.

Shawn: The Wall Street

Shawn: The Wall Street Journal

" Of the top 25 newspapers in the United States, only The Wall Street Journal and Denver Post gained circulation during the period -- the Denver Post through its absorption of the subscribers of the now defunct Rocky Mountain Times." from an AFP article of 4/27/09. Of course, these stats are for the last quarter, I don't know about the last 5 years for the WSJ.

GC, I had not read all of the comments before I made mine.  GMTA, I guess.  It took maybe 20 seconds to run a search and find that information.  Computers and the internet are wonderful things, yes?  So are some newspapers.  BTW, the Daily  Oklahoman is a pretty decent paper, in that it is not blatantly left wing.  Of course, all the marxist/socialists in the state gripe about how extremely right wing it is.  But, then, to those people, Karl Marx was a right winger.

You listed two newspapers that have gained subscribers, I admit maybe content has something to do with it, but as a whole the average newspaper has suffered because you can get it on the internet and computer. The music industry and the pornagraphy business has sufferred greatly as well

"I swear sometimes the self-appointed moral police are as obnoxious and demanding of big government interference as "environmentalist" gun control advocates, labor unions and trial lawyers"~fitzfong

You did it, shawn

Right about the time I am about to throw up my hands and give up and allow you to believe in the magical powers of the Internet...you step in it by bringing up a fave subject of mine.

Music.

Shawn, here are the top 10 issues the music industry is facing, and why they are having such poor sales.

1) Content.

2) Content.

3) Content.

4) Content.

5) Content.

6) Content.

7) Content.

8) Content.

9) Content.

10) Content.

The reason they aren't selling is because of crappy content.  The music industry wants to whine about the Internet, but really, if that was the SOLE reason, they can explain to me why blank casettes and CDs haven't done as much if not MORE damage to the industry.

There IS good music out there, but the music industry refuses to promote it, leaving fans to promote it by word of mouth.  In fact, I could make a tight case that the Internet, via things like iTunes and "word of mouth" type bands such as Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree have actually SAVED the music industry.

As for porn: it ain't Shakespeare.  It doesn't take much to tape a bodily function.  That's not surprising.  Besides, to quote Porcupine Tree: "I'm through with pornography.  The acting is lame, the action is tame, explicitly dull, arousal annulled."

Simple math

"Newspapers...will now have to do with $2.8 BILLION... less than they took in at this time last year. That's a quarterly result."

There's the crux of the matter. A quarterly loss of $2.8 billion from this time last year. I don't think the Internet has pulled any more readers from newspapers in the last year than it had the year before. It's an old tool now, it wasn't just invented last year.

There's obviously more to this than just Internet losses.

Only reason I hang on to the Honolulu Star Bulletin is the coupons...

Believe it or not...

Believe it or not... Beauxdog is a newspaper man!

As a hobby... I shoot high school sports photography for my local small town newspaper... with an occasional college or pro game thrown in.

Even though this newspaper is a for-profit organization... I shoot for them for free because: a) I like to be published and b) they couldn't afford me otherwise.

That being said... I don't read "newspapers".  I get my news online.  It's great, because it's "free".  I use to subscribe to the "Conservative Chronicle", but no more...  I can find opinion all over the internet... for free!

Honestly, I would be willing to pay a monthly subscription (up to $10) to get all the news and commentary I like to read, but it would have to be a single, comprehensive location.

Oh well, that probably won't happen.

Thank you.

I would not be sad to see

I would not be sad to see the NY / LA Times go under. I would also not be surprised to see them get a bailout from the dear leader. Is it November 2010 yet?

It is far better to be three hours early than one minute late.

Drudge reported that some of the advertisers that lefties claim dropped Beck never advertised with him in the first place.

Hi

Hi FF222...

Correct...I've read that quite a bit myself here and there..matters not, even if it was true, others would jump right in to advertize in a second flat.

  Shawn I know that this

Shawn I know that this is only anecdotal evidence and will probably not fullfill your requirment of analytical evidence of a growth in conservative newspapers. As has already been pointed out to you most newspapers have a liberal editorial bias, so trying to find conservative newspapers puts that comparison at an extreme disadvantage. That being said however, from a totally local perspective, over the course of the last several years while monitoring our local paper the Caller Times, I have noticed that at least every week or so there are letters to the editor complaing of the liberal slant to the editorial content of the paper. I don't think that I have ever seen one complaing the opposite view point. It is a daily occurance as far as the online version of the paper. I have probably read hundreds of letters over the course of the last few years of people saying that they have cancelled their subscription for that very reason. I myself did that very thing. I will read the online caller.com because I have the opportunity to call them out for their obvious biases instantaneously as opposed to having to wait weeks to have a response published, if at all.

I am not arguing that there is not a liberal slant to the majority of Newspapers. I am saying that I do not see the need for newspapers when you have the internet.

The example that MikeB and general company gave about the WSJ is all fine and good, same with Unsane with "The Economist" however lets not forget that both these newspapers focus on certain things on top of reporting the news. They speculate on

  • Where the economy is headed
  • What stocks are hot
  •  Is it time to buy gold?
  • Is the real estate marking coming back?
  • Are Mutual Funds better or Stocks?

You don't find that all the time in a regular newspaper  and if you do, your not sure if you trust the source and both these papers are reputable. So there is more value in these papers than just outdated news and gossip.

A non-reader

This is a crystal clear indication you do not read "The Economist". It has LOTS of old news that you look upon with such sneering scorn.

I would be shocked if next week's edition had an obit for Ted Kennedy. I would be less surprised if the edition the week after had it. (But admittedly I was surprised by their recent obit of a fish, even though they are in fact Brits.)

If all it takes is a little feedback from the consumers, let's start really going after the liberally biased news programs. Apparently we can make a difference! Check out www.endthebias.com - we're a small organzation very much against the liberal bias in mainstream media. We provide a place for consumers to speak out against companies that advertise to support these liberal programs. It's time for the news to do it's job and stop painting pictures of liberal celebrity.
