'Fox And Friends' Exclusive: Notre Dame In Uproar Over Obama Speech

  • Bookmark and Share

Major media began shielding Barack Obama from criticism early in the presidential primaries. It's no surprise, then, when they continue to do so today. However, the media's collective, instinctive tone-deafness in regard to grassroots activities continues to stun and amaze.

NewsBusters has so far noted several grassroots efforts that have been ignored – despite similar left-leaning efforts getting fantastic coverage. For example, there was Noel Sheppard's initial entry on the Chicago Tea Parties, and the tiny amount of coverage they received. Then, there was Warner Todd Huston, noting the San Francisco Chronicle's preferential treatment of an anti-Wall Street protest. For the magnum opus, however, we turn to the entire mainstream media's blind eye – pointed squarely at the University of Notre Dame.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

As many a faithful Catholic would tell you, President Obama is decidedly pro-choice (meaning, of course, pro-abortion). Indeed, in the Senate he co-sponsored the “Freedom of Choice Act” and he received the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice America over equally pro-choice Sen. Hillary Clinton in the 2008 campaign.

This week, many faithful Catholics may also be able to tell you that President Obama has been invited by Notre Dame University president Father Jenkins to give this year's commencement speech. Given the above two facts, many devout Catholics – although not likely “ardent Catholic” Nancy Pelosi – are understandably outraged.

This situation was given full coverage by “Fox and Friends” this morning - complete with an interview with Katie Walker, communication director of American Life League (transcript provided below). The competition, however, have much more pressing things to which they devoted their air time; such as discussions of their favorite board games (CBS’s “Early Show”), hosting a Big 'n Rich concert (ABC’s “Good Morning America”), and discussing the latest developments on “The Biggest Loser” (NBC’s “Today”)

If you were watching the more newsworthy morning show on Fox, however, you would find that the Cardinal Newman Society and CatholicVote.org have launched a Web site petition drive aimed at convincing Fr. Jenkins to retract the presidential invitation. According to Ms. Walker, the petition had over 40,000 signatures this morning - as of right now, the count on www.notredamescandal.com stands at just over 86,000. If Notre Dame were to retract their invitation, that act could tarnish the beloved Obama Aura.

So who was today's Biggest Loser in the media? That particular game ended in a tie.:

GRETCHEN CARLSON, “Fox & Friends” co-host: The president of the University of Notre Dame, Father John Jenkins invited President Barack Obama to give the commencement speech to their graduating class in May. But that invitation is sparking criticism now from Catholics across the country.

STEVE DOOCY, co-host: Boy is it, Gretchen One group is going as far as to call it an outrage and a scandal. Katie Walker is with American Life League. She's live in D.C. Good morning, Katie.

KATIE WALKER, American Life League: Good morning thanks for having me.

DOOCY: I’m Catholic. When I was in church on Sunday, that’s the number one thing, even bigger than the AIG bonuses – was, can you believe Notre Dame would invite the President of the United States given his stand on abortion and stem cell research which the Catholic Church is completely against?

WALKER: Exactly. I think the question now is, does Notre Dame University want to be identified as a Catholic university or do they want to take Our Lady off of that famous dome?

CARLSON: So many of the students are outraged? Is that what it is Katie or is it mostly alum [sic]?

WALKER: It's students, alumni, Catholics, pro-lifers across the country. The phones have been ringing off the hook. The Newman Society has put together a Web site, www.notredamescandal.com. I think at last count, there were over 40,000 signatures. American Life League, my organization’s been on the ground at Indiana. We're putting together events and protests talking to students. And mostly wev’e focused on talking to potential students and donors – do they want to be identified, do they want to attend this university?

DOOCY: I think you just touched on the third rail when it comes to universities, especially during a deep recession: donors. I’ve heard from some people on the board who say, “we can't believe that they would do that, we’re not going to send in any money this year.”

WALKER: Exactly. Exactly.

CARLSON: Here’s the interesting thing, Katie, is that the majority of the student body, apparently is enthusiastic about President Obama coming to speak. He won the campus mock election 52.6 percent to 41.1 percent over Senator John McCain.

WALKER: Well, I think the last few months might have changed things quite a bit. President Obama has proven to be the most radically pro-abortion President in history. Since his election he has endorsed using our federal funds to fund abortion overseas. He is rescinding conscience protections, taking away our freedom of religion essentially. His presidential appointees have been radically pro-abortion. So, I think the answer today in March might be a lot different than November. And that's the answer that we’re seeing among the students that we’re working with.

DOOCY: Well, Katie here’s what the University says. Father Jenkins, the president, said:

The invitation to President Obama to be our commencement speaker should not be taken as condoning or endorsing his positions on specific issues regarding the protection of human life, including abortion and embryonic stem cell research.

DOOCY: A quick reaction from you?

WALKER: Well, that's fascinating because Father Jenkins in a similar press release not too long ago said that Catholic social teaching was the foundation on which the University of Notre Dame stands. So, the foundation of Catholic social teaching is life, personhood, the dignity of every human being.

CARLSON: A lot of pressure I believe on Father Jenkins right now, for that invitation to Barack Obama. Katie Walker American Life League Communication Director thanks for joining us this morning.

WALKER: Thank you for having me.

Gonna make a splash

if they withdraw that invitation, though.

Never thought I'd live to say this, and I'll have to wash out my mouth, but "Go Irish!"

IS NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC???

 IS NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC???

As
you may have heard the dufus (aka secular socialist) administration of
Notre Dame is having Obama as its commencement speaker. Repeat, the man
with a 100% congressional rating by Planned Parenthood is speaking at a
“Catholic” University.

Its not bad enough other PP heroes like Teddy K, John K and Nancy P
(democrats of course) are acting like papal authority clones but we
have now yet another outrageous situation.

Do you think the Jews For Jesus national head is speaking at any
commencement at a jewish-run university? Is the national atheist group
leader speaking at Liberty University’s commencement?
Where is the Alumni Association on this repulsive decision?
This is not tolerance or openness, this is fawning offensive stupidity.

I am both disgusted and ashamed.

Doug Schexnayder, Ph.D. (theconservativecrawfish)

Yup.

But it ain't over yet.

I've heard it said...

...that while most liberals support abortion even unto the third trimester....

.....Obama is on record as supporting abortion in the fourth.

It is the obligation of

It is the obligation of every Roman Catholic to call the president of Notre Dame and demand that he retracts his invitation to President Barack Obama.

The Church in the Unites States of America needs to grow a spine! I never understood why the colleges of Bishops came out against Obama's abortion policies AFTER his election and not before. I never understood why the head of the Bishops in the USA came out with his strong stance against FOCA AFTER Obama's election.

One of the reasons that young college students are for Obama is because they do not have a clue what he stands for. The Church has allowed great confusion and scandal to enter its ranks, it is time to stand up for what is right! If the president of Notre Dame retracts his invitation young college kids at Notre Dame will ask questions and they will get answers which will lead them to realize the evilness of Obama's policies.

Contact Notre Dame, with great respect challange this invitation.

Obama is sure to use this invitation for his political gain. Does this Father not realize that he is being used by evil?

One more thing, I believe that the Cardinal/Bishop for South Bend, Indiana should also be contacted. I believe that he can order the president of Notre Dame to politely ask Obama to go away. Let us not forget that when the Catholic priest in Chicago went nutty over Obama, Cardinal George muzzled him.

The Bishop of South Bend/Fort Wayne IN...

...has issued a statement saying that he won't be attending Notre
Dame's commencement exercises, which will feature President Obama as
the keynote speaker and honor him with a doctor of laws degree.

Bishop John M. D'Arcy said that he was not informed
of the decision to allow Obama to speak and be awarded a degree until
just before the White House announced the news.

Notre Dame Pres.

I wrote an e-mail to the Pres of Notre Dame today

stating that Obama should not be invited.  Also

I heard tonight that one Bishop is not going to attend the graduation because of this invitation.

I got the info from Life News.com

Hell I'm for anybody...

who can successfully stick it to Obama...minus Chris Matthews of course.

Ooooh, gross.

Your post gave me a horrifying mental image.  Thanks, Heavy...

Sign the N.D. Petition

Notre Dame would be a good place to hand o=Dumb-uh-uh his first major pr defeat and serve notice to the dimocraps, liberals, and socialist/communist that he and they are going down. It would be a great opportunity, on the day of the commencement to hold a Pro-Life rally, Tea Party, and protest against this bunch of baby killing derelicts who have seized controll of the U.S.A. I signed the petition, when i signed it was about 75,000 and now over 80,000. I beseech you to sign the petition and make a stand against the o-Dumb-uh idiots and force the sub-slime-media to report it.

Kilrod, Jesus didn't offer: He did die, whether anyone . . .

. . . accepted or accepts His gift.

I don't get the uproar from

I don't get the uproar from Norte Dame.

More than 50% of the Roman Catholics who did vote, voted for Obama.  Roman Catholics traditionally vote for democrats.

Why the big deal having him speak at their University?  To me it's a case of "laying in the bed you made". You wanted him, well, you got him.

The one's that it ticks off ought to be preaching to the one's that keep voting knuckleheads like this in, time after time. Somebody is not listening to somebody.

As with the Catholic Christians who voted for the abortionist...

...the same blindness exists with Protestant Christians who did the same.

The depth of deception in both groups is extraordinary.

How can anyone calling themself Christian vote for a man, pretend-Christian as he is, who so loathes the unborn?

Christ Jesus is a life-giver. What about that don't they understand?

But how can they call themselves Christians, having voted for a man who wages war on the most defenseless of all humans--and who has helped make a mother's womb one of the most unsafe places a baby can be in America?

I'm near ND

And  a lot of the outrage locally is because Obama dissed ND during his campaign by coming to Elkhart twice, and then again 2 months ago, when he came here again. The funny thing is that ND is nearby the airport that Obama landed at each time and he never bothered to stop by.

I agree Conservative Rex

I agree Conservative Rex regarding Catholics voting for Obama.  We recently visited Vullanova University on a college tour and I was unhappy to see an Obama/Biden sign in a faculty window.   Catholic universities can allow free speech, but they have a responsibility to promote Catholic values.  Thus, they should not give Obama the honor of speaking at their commencement.  One of the reasons we are looking at Catholic schools is so that our daughter will fit in, and not be inundated with liberal propaganda.  There should be some institutes of higher learning that promote morals and the teaching of right and wrong.

Notre Dame must take action if they want to maintain their integrity.

"Catholic universities can allow free speech, but . . . "

"Catholic universities can allow free speech, but they have a responsibility to promote Catholic values."

If they're Catholic, they have a responsibility to promote and stand for Jesus the Christ above even Catholic values, don't they?

Colleges to check out

If you're looking for a college that shares your values check out Hillsdale. Check out Grove City College as well. Search for most politically conservative colleges to find more.

Radical, may I suggest

Radical, may I suggest Pepperdine University, or Lipscomb College, or Abilene Christian.  All very Conservative, all Christ centered universities.

Radical... I sure you

Radical... I'm sure you remember the outcry from some Catholic colleges and universities when PPII published Ex Corde Ecclesiae.

http://www.vatican.v...

The support the dissenters received from the Old Media was shameful. It seems to me that ND was "outraged", as they often are, about Rome daring to tell a Catholic University to teach Catholic principles and values. The nerve! They were not happy about SAPIENTIA CHRISTIANA, either.

http://www.vatican.v...

But there are terrific RC universities out there. Franciscan University in Steubenville, OH and Christendom College in Front Royal, VA, among many.

The challenge is to follow a consistent plan despite inconsistent prices - Sarah Palin, State of the State of Alaska speech

How to change his mind.

Here's how you change Father Jenkins' (who should be removed from his post because he obviously isn't a devote Catholic to start with) mind. Pick up the phone and call the fundraising department of the university and cancel any pledges you've made and/or tell them you will no longer contribute to a university that supports abortion. Then call Hillsdaly College and make a donation to a truly fine school who believes in not accepting any government money.

If I Were A Notre Dame Student Or Alumnus...

...I would be strenuously objecting to having a pro-abortion person speaking at Commencement. Abortion is in direct opposition to Catholic Church law. It is unconscionable to have a someone who is pro-abortion speak under such circumstances.

Notre Dame Controversy(?)

I live two miles down the street from the University of Notre Dame. I have not seen any protesting that is newsworthy. In fact, there was no local coverage of the protesting of Tony Randall, with the help of Alan Keyes. Now, there are trucks driving around town with intense graphics of aborted fetuses, which I have to say, are disgusting. But also disgusting, would be graphics of those who were tortured, and those who suffered the death penalty of the gas chamber or the electric chair. It's gross being gross. This tactic is not going to stop people from going to see President Obama, especially those who are pro-choice. In fact, local folks are really turned off by these trucks and their graphics. The faculty at ND are scrambling to get their tickets for the event. There are not enough tickets to meet the demand. So, don't believe all the hype about the controversey at Notre Dame.
