MSNBC's Brzezinski Defends Gibbs' Gaffe

  • Bookmark and Share

Mika Brzezinski, co-host of MSNBC's “Morning Joe”, showed her father's aptitude for foreign policy this morning.

The daughter of one of the Carter administration's chief foreign policy wonks started by scolding Robert Gibbs' knee-capping response to former Vice President Dick Cheney's CNN interview, saying that:

BRZEZINSKI: I would have probably wanted to take that on in a big way because many would argue that Cheney made the country more dangerous. Cheney is the one who put us in the position we're in and now has al Qaeda reconstituting around the world. There's some good answers to what Cheney said.

Many would, and they would be proven wrong by that very statement. It was Cheney's policies that destroyed Al Qaeda to the point that they had to “reconstitute” at all. It was Cheney's policies that stopped a long string of al Qaeda attacks. It was indeed Cheney's policies that put us in the position we're in - winning, and safe at home. Apparently, Brzezinski's idea of a better response would have been to attack the policies that have made us safe in the first place.

Following this ridiculous attack, Brzezinski proceeded to offer a round of Gibbs apologia [bracketed portions added for explanation]:

CHUCK TODD, NBC White House correspondent: On the one end they're saying there are some things that can get done, on the other hand if they could, [Robert Gibbs tiptoeing into the room, just behind Todd] we would already know they were doing it. Right now, they just say words like they're legally trying to do everything they can, [laughter from the room] I have a feeling – I have a feeling somebody is behind me.

BRZEZINSKI: All right. See, he's fun. I think there is a little of the country has to get used to his approach, as opposed to what they've seen over the past eight years.

Really? Tony Snow, widely regarded as a fantastic press secretary, is thrown in with Scott McClellan? Ari Fleischer, who torched Chris Matthews on a wide range of issues (including massive personal bias) on his own show last week, wasn't a good press secretary? Dana Perino was never a Hall-of-Fame press secretary, but she had the misfortune of following the act of Tony Snow - who can blame her?

Joe Scarborough, if he had been there, would most likely have made fun of Mika for working hard for White House access. One wonders just how hard you have to shill for access these days. Here's the full transcript:

WILLIE GEIST: Pat, I would be interested in your take as a guy who worked inside a White House controlling message. You saw the interview, we showed it yesterday from Sunday on CNN where Vice President Dick Cheney came out and basically said the Obama foreign policy is making the world more dangerous, putting us in harm's way, also criticized the economic approach, the expansion of government. Robert Gibbs was asked yesterday to respond to Vice President Dick Cheney. Here's what he said.

REPORTER: How do you respond to those kinds of allegations from the former Vice President?

ROBERT GIBBS (WHITE HOUSE PRESS SECRETARY): Well, I guess Rush Limbaugh was busy. So they trotted out the next most popular member of the Republican cabal.

GEIST: The Republican cabal, Pat.

PAT BUCHANAN: That's a big mistake, the Vice President of the United States made some severe criticisms and Gibbs should have been prepared to respond to him, he could've had stuff right up there on the podium, but to cut loose with a smart-aleck, sarcastic response that gets cynical laughter in there, one of the reporters called him on it, is this the way you respond to a former Vice President of the United States. I think Obama has done an outstanding job personally trying with the outrage, I think some of his aides are responsible, he's lost Republican support, this kind of thing will hurt him with moderates and independents who say that Obama has been above it, he's doing a great job, he's reaching out and then you get that from a guy --

MIKA BRZEZINSKI: He's genuinely a good guy, I believe.

BUCHANAN: Sure, we have him on all the time.

BRZEZINSKI: Willie, one of the reporters Pat talked about calling him out.

GEIST: Let's listen to the follow-up Pat just referred to.

REPORTER: You referred to the former Vice President, that was a really hard hitting kind of sarcastic response you had. That's a former Vice President of the United States. Is that the attitude, the sanctioned tone toward the former Vice President of the United States from this White House?

GIBBS: Sometimes I ask forgiveness rather than for permission, Chip. But no, I hope my sarcasm didn't mask the seriousness of the answer with which I addressed Ed.

BRZEZINSKI: You know, I believe him. We've worked with him, he's very good to work with. I guess what I wonder if it was the smartest thing. This is also in response to the Cramer-Jon. Stewart thing where he kind of had a smug response. Why? It's not necessary.

BUCHANAN: They might be in campaign mode, but secondly it suggests that they're getting a little tired of the hits they've been taking. Maybe they're sitting around in an office as Nixon used to say rubbing their sores because everybody is attacking them and things. But when I first saw that, I was on Chris Matthews' show, I had not seen it before, and I was just jolted by this coming from the podium of the Press Secretary of the President of the United States.

BRZEZINSKI: He definitely has a different approach, and I like a lot of it. I like that he engages and he will respond to what, you know, maybe someone who taps into the public feelings out there, a cable host will say or invite us to the White House even though we've been consistently pretty critical of the stimulus package.

BUCHANAN: He's got good personality, lot of wit, he banters back and forth, but this type of thing hurts his president.

BRZEZINSKI: Yeah, I think -- yeah. I'm not sure what to end, usually you wouldn't waste a response to something unless you were --

BUCHANAN: Quite frankly, I saw Cheney's interview, it's very serious, it's high tone. He said he made the country more dangerous, you've got to respond to that. But you don't respond like the Republican cabal.

BRZEZINSKI: That's a really serious thing to say.

BUCHANAN: Serious charge, yeah.

BRZEZINSKI: The judgement that Cheney was making. I would have probably wanted to take that on in a big way because many would argue that Cheney made the country more dangerous. Cheney is the one who put us in the position we're in and now has Al Qaeda reconstituting around the world. There's some good answers to what Cheney said.

GEIST: And Pat, you know this, over the course of day after day of responding to questions, you're going to let your guard down occasionally and let a joke slip out.

BUCHANAN: A lot of things were said that probably should be withdrawn.

GEIST: Sure. That's what I was getting at.

GEIST: Let's just show one moment though. Robert Gibbs yesterday as our own Chuck Todd was doing his stand-up. Watch the background in the briefing room.

CHUCK TODD: On the one end they're saying there are some things that can get done, on the other hand if they could, we would already know they were doing it. Right now, they just say words like they're legally trying to do everything they can, I have a feeling – I have a feeling somebody is behind me.

BRZEZINSKI: All right. See, he's fun. I think there is a little of the country has to get used to his approach, as opposed to what they've seen over the past eight years.

We have a bunch of juvenile

We have a bunch of juvenile delinquents running the country now, backed up by MSM gang members. Everyone's looking out only for themselves -- not the country -- and Cheney's absolutely right. We are unsafe now, and it's getting worse by the day. What's Obama going to do when long range strategic (and nuclear-armed) bombers are sitting off our coast in Cuba? And when all the Gitmo detainees are released and back leading their terroist cells? Think we will be safer?

Gibbs needs to be fired.

And Obama needs to be fired, too.

TnT... Juvenile

TnT...

Juvenile indeed...

You are so right...we have so many things going on worldwide that is aiming to hurt this country from the outside, along with the mess of pols running this country on the inside we are going to be so sorry for all of this attention being paid to all of this bull...when we are hit again...only I feel hit quite a few enemies working in tandem./

Wake up America!

Here are a few links from just a few days ago....here, here and here...and one more.

I'm curious if any of these "experts"...

...are even old enough to remember "The Bay of Pigs"? I seriously doubt it!

"It was Cheney's policies

"It was Cheney's policies that destroyed Al Qaeda to the point that they had to “reconstitute” at all. It was Cheney's policies that stopped a long string of al Qaeda attacks. It was indeed Cheney's policies that put us in the position we're in - winning, and safe at home."

Weren't these actually Bush's policies?

Semantics...

You could possibly argue that, but you'd be wrong.

Think back to Bush's 2000 campaign.  What did he run on the first time?  He wanted to be the Republicans' CEO President - cut taxes, improve education, and possibly fix Social Security.  Dick Cheney, former Secretary of Defense, was picked as VP for the same reason (among others, of course) that Joe Biden was picked - the Presidential candidate had very weak foreign policy credentials.  That's also why he picked an expert in Russian policy as his National Security Advisor (Condi Rice).

You are absolutely right.

You are absolutely right.  But constitutionally speaking, it's the president whose signature is on those policies.  Bush gets the credit while Dick gets to go on TV to back those policies he helped implement.

Something most people miss

Something most people miss out on is the nature of staff processes and decision making within administrations.

Successful administrations use these staff processes to come up with coherent policies and courses of action development to prepare the Chief Executive (Commander) for the best possible outcome.

Some presidents do well, others not so based on their use of these processes and how they view them.

Lyndon Baines Johnson HATED and distrusted his military staff to the point he had a model of the Khe Sahn firebase built in the white house so he could ignore his staff and literally apportion targets and missions to be flown.

Jimmy Carter was much the same way.  For an experienced military officer, he disregarded much of his staff's recommendations, nor did he seem to know how to use them and thus became a prisoner in the Whitehouse making highly ideaological decisions based on nothing more than sweetness and light.

While the left complains about Ronald Reagen and GWB they were masters of the staff process and used them appropriately.

Obama?  Well.... He is having problems fleshing out his staff though he common Democrat does not see it since they impute magical powers to presidents rather than see the long hours of staff work that goes into the presidency.  THey watch WAY too much TV.

By the way...

Just throwing this out there...I read your comments voraciously - talk back to me!  If I see you asking questions, I'll most likely respond.

Mika Breziznzzzinzkiii....

I've seen this "Trophy" bimbo news "reporter"??? Gimmi ---- a frickin' ----break----. She was born with a silver spoon in her mouth, never REALLY worked for what she's got or where she is (although it isn't much, she thinks it is...). Daddy pretty much opened every locked door in front of her. She gets a Limo to take her to work, (no cab fair required) just 7 bucks or so for the needy....silicone implants, etc. She carries left wing creds with her for the pure phonie make-up of the high society liberal living in NY... The only thing she EVER contributes on Morning Jo is middle aged eye candy....

gxa - sounds like the young Ms. McCain would fit right in

with Mika should she wish to expand her face time on the little screen ;-)  What an embarrassment Meghan is to her family!!!!

Not To Be Too Barbaric

But Mika looks like Grandpa Munster in drag. That nose and her "cute" facial antics. Not much for eye candy, just a side kick for Joe, kinda like Gabby Hayes. ANYWAY, I have Liberal friends who can't watch this show. And it's mainly BECAUSE of Mika. She can't talk, she's mostly there to "oo" and "ah" after everything Joe says and wiggle around and watch herself on the monitor. When she DOES say anything, well, it's mostly like this. Just my two cents about a female not worth the two pennies to begin with.

Pump... She does like to

Pump...

She does like to watch herself in that monitor...it is very noticeable...at least she isn't as bad as she used to be with all the non-ending ooohs and aaahs...she actually has an opinion now and then.

Six of one, half-dozen of the other...

Sometimes I think that Mika would be a much better host if she were more assertive - this is the first opinion I can remember her offering since I started watching this show.  Scarborough typically runs her over, rhetorically speaking.

But then again, if she's going to be horribly biased, maybe that's a good thing...I can't decide - if she's offering majorly biased opinions such as the above, that gives me more to write about, but if she's not biased at all, the show is a tad vanilla.  I'd (personally speaking) much prefer to see something like the old Crossfire shows - two wildly talented hosts hammering at each other from across a desk.  Think Rush Limbaugh vs. Keith Olbermann - you cannot tell me that would not get epic ratings.

Olbermann and his nutroots, versus Limbaugh and his. The exec that does this will become rich, famous, and powerful - and you heard it here first...

Gibbs sure can't hold a candle to his predecessors!

And the AUDACITY of the press - why I was waiting for them to give him a standing ovation for his 'cute' Limbaugh one-liner -

HINT TO ALL MSM'rs - do NOT wonder why when your company is the latest to cut staff...you aren't worth staying on in a janitorial position!  I think more highly of those on the maintenance staff - at least they are productive!  You are nothing more than teeny-boppers wanting to toss your undies to 'the one' and his band of miscreants!

Cape..here's a Gibbs

Cape..here's a Gibbs presser you might have missed.

Reporter: The Administration seems not to have a coherent economic policy. Can you explain that?

Gibbs: Do I believe little fishees swim in the deep, dark ocean? Yes, I do. This administration has talked about that often, but you weren't listening, apparently.

Reporter: The Russians have said they may base their bombers in Venezuala and Cuba. What does the Adminstration plan to do about that? Is that a violation of the Monroe Doctrine.

Gibbs: Do I believe clouds hold water? Yes, I do. The President has commented on this many times in the campaign and we still hold that opinion. The President believes rain is a good thing, not a bad thing.

Reporter: The President promised he would not support earmarks, but he just signed a bill with the most earmarks in history. How do you explain that?

Gibbs: Do I believe giraffes have long necks? Yes, I do. You can easily verify that by visiting any zoo. You can't debate that fact. The President has commented many times about the long neck on all giraffes, but perhaps you missed that.

Reporter: The President has made known that he plans to create a civilian security force in the United States as well funded as the Defense Department. Could you explain what that's all about?

Gibbs: Do I believe that the earth is round? Yes, I do. The flat earth theory was tossed out years ago, but you obviously haven't heard about it. Maybe you should read a science book.

Reporter: The Administration seems to have made many mistakes in vetting its appointees. Can you explain what's going on and how you will improve that process?

Gibbs: Do I believe all cars should have wheels? Yes, I do. Experience has shown this Adminstration, at least, that having four wheels helps the movement of a car tremendously. We talked about that very often in the campaign. I guess you weren't listening.

Very true....I heard him today using himself as a Figure Skating example as some kind to a reporter...he is really an embarrassment.

Still not as bad as Scottie M. to me though.

bt - it's a tie at the moment - and Bobby has just begun ;-)

What really ticked me off was the press reaction to his Cheney/Limbaugh reference.  If I wanted to watch Comedy Central I'd tune in.

He and Timmy Geithner both look like junior high school boys who are doing their best to avoid the teacher's questions by making fools of themselves!

GUESS WHAT, GUYS...IT AIN'T WORKING!!!  You just come across as FOOLS!!!
