LA Times: 'Looking for Headlines, the House Committee on Un-American Activities Called a Host of Showbiz Talent'

By Mike Bates | June 10, 2012 | 21:43

This week the Los Angeles Times's Web site carries the story "Kirk Douglas on the blacklist: Why Hollywood showed so little courage," referencing  the actor's recently released memoir.  The article also appears in today's Chicago Tribune print edition, titled "How Douglas took on blacklist with 'Spartacus.'"  Author Patrick Goldstein reports Douglas is particularly proud of hiring former Communist and unrepentant member of the Hollywood Ten Dalton Trumbo to write the movie "Spartacus."

Several paragraphs into the piece, Goldstein writes:

Looking for headlines, the House Committee on Un-American Activities called a host of showbiz talent to testify about their associations, real or otherwise, with the Communist Party. Trumbo, in fact, was a member of the Communist Party from 1943 to 1948.

Goldstein, writing of Communist associations "real or imagined," then goes on to acknowledge Trumbo's party membership. He suggests the committee was merely looking for publicity, but the truth is that Communism was a significant problem in Hollywood and warranted investigation.  Numerous members of the film industry confirmed Red penetration and one is quoted in the February, 2012 Los Angeles Times Magazine  A Hollywood screenwriter testified that John Howard Lawson, another screenwriter and first president of the Screen Writers Guild, told students at a school for actors:

“It is your duty to further the class struggle by your performance. If you are nothing more than an extra wearing white flannels on a country-club veranda, do your best to appear decadent, do your best to appear to be a snob, do your best to create class antagonism.”

He would instruct writers: “Do not try to write an entire Communist picture. The producers will quickly identify it, and it will be killed by the front office. Try to get five minutes of the...party line in every script you write...If you can make the message come from the mouth of Gary Cooper or some other star who is unaware of what he is saying, by the time it is discovered, he is in New York, and a great deal of expense will be involved to bring him back and reshoot the scene.”

The magazine also quotes Paul Jarrico, screenwriter, movie producer and Communist Party member:

“Oh, we were certainly involved in efforts to affect the content of films,” says Jarrico. “We were wide-eyed about the possibility of writing movies that would affect millions and millions of viewers."

Asserting the House Committee on Un-American Activities was solely looking for headlines in its Hollywood investigations is a disservice to history.  There's ample evidence that Communists and their minions actively worked on transmitting their views to unwitting audiences.

obfuscation and rehabilitation

Submitted by Dr. Ron on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 10:20pm.

For the truth: read Ronald Radosh's book ..Red Star Over Hollywood...read the books based on decoded Venona files/Klehr et al.. For the lies: read the constant efforts to portray the Rosenbergs as innocents...remember Alger Hiss, Harry Dexter White and other purveyors of treason! That is the obfuscation and we see, again and again, attempts at rehab of these miscreants by the liberal media and Hollywood. Sad to say it works....remember Hollywood having a hissy over Elia Kazan getting an award (all he did was tell the truth about card-carrying communists in Hollywood to the bogeyman..HUAC). The beat goes on....

is, like Communist, so immoral and perverse that they will go out of their way to support a child rapist.

A popular TV series in the 50's was "I Led Three Lives",

Submitted by Rush Fan on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 10:47pm.

a series based on the true life exploits of Herbert Philbrick. Philbrick was an advertising executive, who also worked undercover for the FBI and who was able to infiltrate the Communist Party USA in the 40's.

It was a program I enjoyed watching, and made many of us aware that Communist were still alive and active in this country. Here is one of the program episodes.

Of course I was rooting for the commies.

[I trust the little winking emoticon really isn't necessary.]

From a 1953 book

Submitted by Michigeezer on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 11:04pm.

"America Faces World Communism" by Anthony Trawick Bouscaren-

"Jose' Ferrer, winner of an Oscar award in 1951, was only one of many Hollywood personages who joined one Communist front after another during and after World War 2. He became identified with the Artists Front to Win The War, headed by the leading representative of the Communist party in Hollywood, John Howard Lawson. He lent his name to the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee, which brought such leading Communists as Gerhart Eisler into the United States. He became a leader of the Communist front Independent Committee of the Arts, Sciences, and Professions, and later was one of many prominent Americans who endorsed the candidacy of Benjamin J. Davis, Communist candidate for the New York City Council, later convicted as a top American Communist"

This book has been a treasure trove of starting points for Google searches on American Communist history.

Dr. Ron...

Submitted by Jer on Sun, 06/10/2012 - 11:05pm.

I'm not sure exactly where Radosh currently resides ideologically, but it appears he has his head screwed on straight:

"...Printed in a tabloid-sized flashy mass market paperback format by Regnery, the book appears as a conservative antidote to the satire of Jon Stewart’s America: The Book, a volume that truly has taken over the undergraduate market by storm. Woods’s book is indeed filled with “substantive distortions of history,” a point elucidated well by Max Boot. Indeed, Woods has used a book I co-authored with Harvey Klehr, The Amerasia Spy Case: Prelude to McCarthyism, as the main evidence for his pathetic attempt to rehabilitate the reputation of the late Senator Joe McCarthy. Any careful reader of our book -- a group that clearly does not include Mr. Woods -- will learn that what Klehr and I do write is that Joe McCarthy “cynically used the Amerasia affair” and was actually “indifferent to the facts of the case.” What Mr. Woods does with his excerpts from and citation of our book is to misuse our research and work for a politically contentious argument that is far from the truth..."  [my emphasis in bold]

I'm confident there are a handful of lefty diehards who to this day stubbornly and desperately and foolishly embrace the innocence of the Rosenbergs, Hiss, and White.  But the preponderance of mainstream liberal scholarship let go of it long ago.

Jer

By the way, Dr. Ron, you should flesh out your NB profile.  It's exasperatingly skimpy.  ;-)

Jer...since I responded to you at 0300 in the morning, I missed your point. Yes.. My profile/bio is way too long; I joined NB not long after I retired and just pasted in parts of my last resume'. Added a posed pic, very business-like.
Even worse, after I read your response to me, I went in and added more to my bio..I did change my pic.
So, with some sleep and some caffeine, will go in and cut down on my bio/profile which I assumed very few read...Thanks for heads-up. Ron

Jer...if you are John Earl XXXXX, my admiration. Kevin Smith (retired USN Captain; Retired United AL Captain) have written a book, at publisher for editing/groan but they seem to want to push it...we hope late July/early August...no, not in aviation but very topical for the 2012 election. Working title is Hostile to Reason: Socialism's Final Countdown; we hope it will help some voters to see some reality. Ron
