CNN's Dobbs: Many Government Agencies 'Disappointingly Incompetent'

Photo of Michael M. Bates.

Last month, my NewsBuster colleague Jeff Poor reported on CNN's Lou Dobbs calling for President Bush's impeachment because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet identified the source of the salmonella outbreak.  On Tuesday evening's edition of Lou Dobbs Tonight, it was obvious the host's rage hasn't diminished.  Airing a report on the salmonella outbreak by CNN  correspondent Louise Schiavone, he followed up:

DOBBS: Well, I'm very sorry that Julie Gerberding and the CDC is frustrated. But I'm a little more concerned about the fact that the American consumer right now is absolutely vulnerable. When the two agencies, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration still, after more than two months, don't have a clue as to what is going on here.

SCHIAVONE: It's just an astonishing turn of events. We know that the first case was recorded in early April. This thing is not only going on, but it shows no signs of pulling back. And as you say, they just don't have any idea what the cause is.

DOBBS: And yet, we do not have any indication whatsoever that the Department of Health and Human Services is in any way mobilizing extraordinary resources for the FDA, for the CDC to go about inspecting and trying to contain this outbreak.

SCHIAVONE: They just don't know what to do. That's the really amazing thing about it. They just don't have any idea what to do. Now, they're trying to intercept these specialty products. The cilantro, the specialty peppers, ingredients that are found in salsas. But, really, you know, this could just be another shot in the dark.

DOBBS: Well, another shot in the dark, it is more incompetence. Secretary Mike Leavitt of the Department of Health and Human Services, you know, perhaps he could ask his friends in China what to do. Because this administration is operating with abject irresponsibility and this borders on absolutely criminal negligence on the part of this administration and the leaders of these two departments. This is just inexplicable.

SCHIAVONE: Well, the truth is that as consumers, we're all vulnerable. So now the number is up to almost 1,000. We know that that can be multiplied by between 30 and 40. So potentially 40,000 Americans affected by this. There are no answers. When you go to a grocery store, when you go to a restaurant, you have absolutely no idea what you should buy, what you should feed your family. You have no idea how vulnerable you are.

DOBBS: Well, unfortunately, I think we're all getting a sense of that vulnerability. And we're certainly getting a sense of how, well, disappointingly incompetent so many agencies that we depend upon in the federal government are in their efforts, in their, at least, responsibility, if not their efforts, to protect the American consumer. Louise, thank you very much. Louise Schiavone, in Washington.

Certainly the salmonella outbreak should be taken seriously.  The FDA appears to be doing what it can to trace its origins so remedial action can be taken.  At the same time, it's worth noting that, according to a Monday Reuters report, in the three months since the illness began striking people, there have been fewer than 1,000 cases of the poisoning and 130 people have required hospitalization.

Again, I'm not minimizing the seriousness of an illness.  In a nation of more than 300 million, however, it doesn't seem as though Dobbs's anger is proportionate to the extent of the problem.

By their very natures, bureaucracies are inherently inefficient.  Always counting on immediate, comprehensive, and effective action isn't a reasonable expectation.  Ironically, Lou Dobbs has suggested that he'd like to place our health care in the hands of the same disappointingly incompetent Federal agencies that irritate him so much.

In December, 2006, Dobbs hosted on his program a "Special Edition: War on the Middle Class."  He said:

"We can talk about national healthcare, universal healthcare coverage. Call it what you want to. But this country has a responsibility to all the people in this room and Americans, all but the very poor and the very rich, are the ones being hammered, because there is no program for the middle class."

So Dobbs believes it's the government's responsibility to provide a healthcare program.  Why would he imagine the agencies charged with that task would be any more efficient than the FDA, which displeases him so much, has been?

Some in the mainstream media, like Lou Dobbs, find fault with government programs and departments.  That's fine.  Yet at the same time they promote new programs and departments for the government to operate.  Now there's something to get angry about.

This guy is just another angry moron

Dobbs is just the CNN equivalent of MSDNC's Olbermoron. Endless hatred and overwhelmed with his own self image.

Always finding criticism of others, this guy and his sister Keith seem to have an IQ somewhere between a slug and plant life, usually incorrect in their facts and never offering solutions other than impeaching everyone with an R in their title. Venom spewing is their blood sport and neither of them will rate more than a footnote in the history of journalism.

Dobbs is just one more in

Dobbs is just one more in a long line of ranters. He, like every other liberal on the planet, plays the blame game. According to Dobbs that blame nearly always lands on a Republican.

I don't take him seriously. Evidently I'm not the only one. CNN's ratings are dropping faster that Congresses approval ratings.

Over reaction

Give the FDA a break. They are one of the most over worked and understaffed/funded government agencies in the US. Not to mention that tracking a disease outbreak can be a very difficult and time consuming job.

Having politicians step in and give their useless and completely unprofessional opinions is not going to help.

Dobbs is irrelevant...

Lou Dobbs is a typical no-talent journalist trying to get ratings by acting angry.  If you watch his show for more than five minutes (which is very difficult for anyone with more than a high school education) you'll see that he doesn't understand much about business or government.  Rather than admit his own ignorance, he lashes out in anger and calls things "stupid," "dumb," "ridiculous," "outrageous," "irresponsible," etc. This is the same technique Olbermann uses to get ratings.

Like Olbermann, Dobbs's only appeal is to others who are equally ignorant who look to him to get angry about topics that they also don't understand.  In their minds, anything they don't understand must be "stupid."

Let us reasses

(which is very difficult for anyone with more than a high school education)

I don't believe he even gets to the level of a sixth grader.  It appears the high school graduates are being insulted when equated with Lou and his intelligentsia.  The description of Loo is spot on.

"You have no idea how

"You have no idea how vulnerable you are."

Wow. You can see that brilliant ray of enlightenment shining out from their words in the air.

Yeah. Life is risky. Crossing the street isn't 100% safe, no matter how many federal agencies we can have.

Sorry, Lou. We can't have a federal bureaucrat be in your kitchen and wash your food for you. The bureaucrat can't make sure that your food is cooked to an acceptable temperature. He can't dispose spoiled food for you, Lou. Guess what? IT IS UP TO YOU!!

Moron.

Vulnerable citizens

It should be obvious the government can't guarantee the safety of everyone.  But for many in the MSM, the allure of the nanny state never fades.

If we left it to the feds we'd only be allowed to eat our eggs scrambled and cooked hard. No runny eggs. If we'd be allowed to eat eggs at all. And that steak and burger would be well done leather.

That'd be OK with Barney Frank, don't you think?

Why Should We?

Why should we expect the CDC or the FDA be any more competent at what they do then say our Intelligence agencies, the State Department, the Congress, FEMA, or the ego maniacs at the Pentagon.  And the fact that this outbreak has impacted 1000 people out of 300 million demostrates the absurdity of our angst and what the bureaucrats instigated w/their alarms.  I'm willing to bet there are ten's of thousands of our citizens that get a fairly good upset stomach from eating anything on any particular day, and we rightfully couldn't care less as to the cause.  Maybe the more important need is to understand why we, as a society, overreact to these incidents to the point of destroying tons of perfectly healthy food and causing economic alarm and harm to a segment of our farm community, without sufficient evidence of what the problem is.  I'm certain we're all willing to be patient with the CDC and FDA to track down the culprit, unless of course, you're tomatoe farmer and your harvest has been completely obliterated by this entire episode.

Very well said. Our country

Very well said.

Our country is getting more and more into 0 tolerance for risk. It is the mindset of a child, which is a world of ignorance and fear.

I see it every day. Recently, I saw two small children in one of those tiny electric cars (I guess kids can't peddle their bikes/big wheels any more). The thing couldn't go quicker than a slow walk. But one of the kids had a helmet on. A freak'n helmet.

Another time, I saw a young dad pushing his little boy along on a bike. Apparently this was the first time the kid is riding it. It's an iconic moment that I myself remember experiencing. However, this time, the kid is wearing enough armor to fight the 100-year war. And, get this, THE DAD WOULD NOT LET GO. He ran along the whole way, and I heard him repeat over and over "Don't worry, I won't let go. I WILL NEVER LET GO. NEVER". I'm serious.

Great Example

Of what's wrong with our country today.

Risk tolerance

Our country is getting more and more into 0 tolerance for risk. It is the mindset of a child, which is a world of ignorance and fear.

Also, not surprisingly,  the mindset of many in government and the MSM.

I WILL NEVER LET GO.

I WILL NEVER LET GO. NEVER". I'm serious.

Oh, good grief!

So the kid is never going to learn to ride on his own?

But don't you see?

This is why nationalizing healthcare is such a brilliant idea!

What ever you do don't demand that the FDA or Department of Agriculture crack the whip. What will happen is they will make a big show by going to all of the wrong businesses and fine them for minor infractions, instead of actually finding the source ... Mexican Vegetables. American's are warned not to eat raw food when visiting Mexico, yet, it's available in our stores. Have they thought perhaps that the source of salmonella are the trucks cooling units. For all we know the SOB's (south of the border) haulers have been hauling chickens too.

exactly!!!!!!!!

exactly!!!!!!!!

Crash,

You're almost there,  It's not Mexican vegitable or trucks.

As I live in a state over run by Illegals I can tell you this, when they are out tending to the crops there are no porta johns.

This is where the disease comes from but it would not be PC to say it.

That would account for e

That would account for e coli, not salmonella.

Crash,

I may be mistaken,

Good thing there hasen't been any outbreaks of that or TB or measles or (Insert third world disease here) in the states.

However,

 http://www.newscientist.com/channel/health/dn14110-us-salmonella-outbreak-explained-.html

Isn't Salmonella an animal pathogen? What is it doing in tomatoes?

"They have to spend a lot time of their lives going between hosts," says Keith Warriner, a food microbiologist at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.

Pathogens like Salmonella have probably evolved to cope with life outside our intestines. The deadly Escherichia coli 0157:H7 strain thrives on leafy greens such as spinach and lettuce, while Salmonella tends to do best on fleshier fruits and vegetables.

Plant and animal pathogens really aren't that different, says Warriner. They share many of the same tricks of the trade, including molecular syringes that squirt toxins into cells and "grappling-hooks" that latch onto host cells and don't let go.

The bacteria probably come from groundwater contaminated with animal faeces, he says. Once Salmonella gets on and into a tomato, the fruit acts like an incubator. Bacteria divide even in the cool temperatures of packing houses. "If you get a few samples into the internal tissue, then they will grow for sure," Warriner adds.

Yet another example of how the bar is continually raised for the current president.  It wasn't enough that the libtards want him pouring over sattelite images with a magnifying glass looking for Bin Laden.  Now they want him in the lab slaving over beakers, test tubes, and bunson burners.

More evidence that liberalism is a mental disorder.

abject irresponsibility

I wonder if Lou and his comrades think that a different administration, which will introduce a relative handful of new people to the bureaucracies, will - hesto, presto - be so much better.

That's delusion you can believe it.

I must say-- I am surprised--

I must say-- I am surprised--I am sincere when I say I would not expect a person like Lou Dobbs to get such negative responses on NB. Also, to see him accused of being a liberal is mind-boggling. Please, I am not posting to argue for him. I just have always considered him to be conservative, definitely not liberal. I also thought that he would appeal to the majority of members of a conservative blog site like NB. Wow!  I am out of touch and out of sync.

I would expect Huffington and some others to lambaste him!

Dobbs did recently cover

Some judicial/BATF BS the rest of the news media seemed resolutely determined to ignore, which was nice, but it didn't help the victim in the end. The rest of the media were probably congratulating themselves on how well they cover Veterans' issues, I guess (the victim's a Veteran). I think some folks long for PaleoCNNific days when Lou just reported the business news, with minimal/no opinions. Sometimes, I think Lou gets a bit too much inspiration from Bill O'Reilly.
JMR

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

Ignorance knows no political ideology...

Dobbs claims to be an independent and he does support and oppose both liberal and conservative issues.  The unwavering and most irritating factor in his reporting is his lack of detailed knowledge about any subject.  He reads headlines and makes knee-jerk, emotional reactions to topics without really knowing what he is talking about.  That type of journalism is the most dangerous since he appeals to and influences the masses of the similarly ignorant.

Impeach Obama?

Jimmy Carter neglected the military by allowing equipment to decay and stagnating the pay of soldiers, sailors, and Marines. Training lagged during his administration. It resulted in debacles like the botched hostage rescue attempt in Iran.

If President Obama does the same thing, will Lou Dobbs demand his impeachment? Does Lou think that the FDA is more important than the Department of Defense?

Who would've thought that a federal agency could be incompetent and inefficient? How could that happen?

I know people who want to nationalize the oil industry and let the federal government run the refineries. Can you imagine that nightmare?

Impeaching BO

I don't know about Lou, but my guess is that many, if not most, of his colleagues, would be willing to give Mr. Hope & Change a honeymoon period.  Like maybe for four years.

The standard for

The standard for impeachment of the President is the commission of "high crimes and misdemeanors"

Stupidy, wrong-headedness, and even idiocy may be infuriating, but not impeachable. I think.

Vote 4 change. Vote 4 anything. See Jack & Mr Shy's first campaign ad for the ONLY viable 3rd party candidate.

"high crimes and

"high crimes and misdemeanors" as we saw in the impeachment of President Clinton is fungible depending on who is in charge.  The threshold of misdemanors was debated to no end.  In some instances if Obama drops the ball and does not pick it up it would be a crime against the people, but it would be hard to make a case.  In all it is a political game and we all know who will be in charge and I doubt the Dims would impeach.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

A childish rant

Dobbs is just being childish. Let's look at the "journalism" going on here. Look at the transcript of the original CNN report. Louise Schiavone reported that the CDC didn’t know where the outbreak originated. The CDC was worried that it may have begun in Mexico. OK, until this point, it’s a reasonable and factual news report.

  • But let’s be clear. Schiavone acknowledged that the US doesn’t know where the outbreak originated. It may have been Mexico, but it may have been California or Guam, for that matter. They don’t know. For all their suspicions, at this moment, the US has no proof that it came from Mexico.

  • If you arrogantly start pointing fingers, the Mexicans are going to resent it, and you can kiss any further cooperation from them goodbye. And if the disease does come from Mexico, where the US has no jurisdiction, you’re going to need that cooperation. So, until you have solid proof, the responsible thing to do is keep your mouth shut.

But watch how Schiavone tries to slip past all that. She continues her report by quoting “one food safety expert in academia.”

  • Wait a minute! For all we know, this expert in academia is an adjunct instructor from the local community college.

  • “Academia” is a weasel word for just about any kind of school. Maybe he spent some time at McDonald’s, maybe even at Hamburger University.

Schiavone slips this person into her report, even though he may (very likely) have zero first-hand knowledge of this case. But she sure runs with his quote, doesn’t she?

“And one food safety expert in academia says it's still fair to wonder what's going on, whether or not Mexico has the science. This academic said to me one man's science is another man's non-tariff trade barrier.”

Note very carefully … this shadowy expert from academia is the source for the speculation that the FDA is refusing to investigate for fear of offending the Mexicans. Schiavone’s whole report is based on this expert’s quote. On this flimsiest of “evidence,” Schiavone claims that the Mexicans are worried about their self-image.

Here's where Dobbs comes in, throwing caution and logic to the wind. Dobbs leaps on the idea that the Mexicans are worried about their self-image. In a self-serving display of non sequitur, he “connects the dots” (incorrectly, of course). He supplies the premise that the reason the FDA isn’t protecting us is that they’re more worried about Mexican feelings than the safety of the American consumer. And from there, he’s off to the races.

For the sake of proving his moral rectitude, Dobbs seized a thin report, added his own biases and presumptions, and turned it into a petulant tantrum. Deliberation took a holiday here. Aren't there any adults on CNN?

CNN's Dobbs: Many Government

CNN's Dobbs: Many Government Agencies 'Disappointingly Incompetent'

Kinda like much of the MSM, huh Lou?

Dobbs considers himself a presidential candidate in waiting as he increasingly takes on Populist positions in his reporting, sitting there in his 3/4 , zoom-faced, GQ pose.

Sweet Lou

This is what I have been saying about Lou Dobbs for years, and even during his passionate opposition to the amnesty bill; Lou Dobbs is just another nanny state supporter! The only thing the government is really good at is picking your pockets every time you earn a dime, so why would they be able to isolate the casue of this salmonella poisoning in a flash?

This rant shows just how stupid the left can be. They have fooled themselves into believing that the government is some super efficient entity that can automatically solve all of our problems, and they get pissed off when it works the way it works. But instead of addressing the inefficiency of the government, they rail against the sitting administration.

New survey also says: 95% of

New survey also says:

95% of  MSM news sources "overwhelmingly incompetent and biased"

All these problems may soon go away.

CNN's Dobbs: Many Government Agencies 'Disappointingly Incompetent'

For all their troubles I still have more faith in the FDA than I have in a Congress controlled by Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi and their minions. 9% approval and dropping.

Nevertheless, the perfectly clear subtext of the MSM is that our real problems (e.g., dependency on foreign oil) and imaginary problems (e.g., the recession 'that we have been in for months now') will go away with George W. Bush. And there is something to this. Any bets that, once Obama is elected, the skies will not clear, and whatever problems remain, according to what the MSM deigns to report, will not have a silver lining?

This is exactly what happened to the highly distorted homelessness problem once Clinton was elected.

Impunitas semper ad deteriora invitat.

Dobbs falls into the usual

Dobbs falls into the usual trap of liberals in wanting more government oversight and regulation, then wailing when government proves again that it's incompetent. Then, they demand more of it to make it competent, not understanding that the bigger it grows, the more incompetent it gets. They just don't get it.
