NBC News President Insists Zimmerman Edit 'Not a Deliberate Act to Misrepresent'

Following a series of anonymous leaks, NBC has released its first on-the-record statements regarding the internal investigation into its misleading audio clip of George Zimmerman's 9-1-1 call.

According to NBC, the controversial clip, which appeared during its "Today" morning news show, was edited deliberately by the producer to fit within time constraints and not for some other reason. Speaking to Reuters, NBC News president Steve Capus asserted that the individual, who has been fired but whose name has not been disclosed, had made "a mistake and not a deliberate act to misrepresent the phone call."

The misleading cut removed crucial seconds of Zimmerman's call during which the 9-1-1 operator inquired about the race of the man he was pursuing. In response to the question, Zimmerman stated that he believed the individual was of African extraction. The initial question was removed by NBC News while Zimmerman's answer was included.

To listen to the edited clip and the original, see video below from NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell who first broke the story on the March 29 edition of Fox News's "Hannity" program.

An excerpt from the Reuters story which gives more details into NBC's internal investigation and also credits NewsBusters and Breitbart.com as being instrumental in exposing the network's selective editing:

NBC News's decision to air an edited call from George Zimmerman to police in the moments before he shot Trayvon Martin was "a mistake and not a deliberate act to misrepresent the phone call," according the president of network's news division. [...]

Under growing public pressure to explain the incident, NBC News President Steve Capus provided Reuters with the fullest explanation to date of how the edited call made it on air and what the network is doing to prevent such a consequential error from happening again.

Capus confirmed a previous Reuters report that an internal network investigation had determined that a producer made the editing error, and that the network's editorial controls - including senior broadcast producer oversight, script editors and often legal and standards department reviews of sensitive material to be broadcast - simply missed the selective editing of the phone call.

He said the producer has been fired and "several people" involved were disciplined, though he declined to specify the nature of the disciplinary actions, saying they were internal personnel matters.

Sources at the network told Reuters on Thursday that NBC News executives did not know the emergency call was misleadingly edited until news reports surfaced days later on blogs including newsbusters.org and Breitbart.com. [...]

As part of the investigation, the producer who edited the call was questioned extensively about motivation, and it was determined that the person had cut the video clip down to meet a maximum time requirement for the length of the segment - a common pressure in morning television - and inadvertently edited the call in a way that proved misleading.

NBC News has apologized for the incident, saying in a statement to Reuters earlier this week that there was "an editing error in the production process," but insisting the results of the internal investigation would not be announced publicly.

Capus said that the network "takes its responsibility seriously" and has undertaken rigorous efforts to formalize the editorial safeguards in place at the network.

In a separate incident showing media "synergy" at its worst, NBC's online news arm, MSNBC.com, perpetuated the same false edit in text form which was first exposed by Breitbart.com blogger Dan Riehl. After Riehl pointed out the misinformation, MSNBC.com corrected its story but did not inform readers of the article that a correction had been made until NewsBusters pointed this out March 30.

The repurposing of the misleading clip to an online story suggests the problem is more widespread than what Capus and what NBC have let on, however. What hasn't been revealed to the public is when the truncated call transcript was inserted into the MSNBC.com story which was dated March 21.

The public has also not been informed about the process by which the false Zimmerman transcript was inserted. Clearly there were no time constraints at work in the construction of the web version. Why then was the edited transcript used?

Unfortunately for NBC, despite its best attempts to delay releasing any sort of news until Easter Sunday, the story about this fiasco is going to go on and won't dissipate, due in part to the network's strategy of releasing as little information as possible.

Top down leadership

NBC is just taking a cue from Dear Leader.
'The (white) police are acting stupidly (arresting a black breaking the law).'
The New Black Panthers are now simply Community Organizers and poll watchers.
'Macaca', a word no one had ever heard, and no one can define, before the Media spread it all over, is racist.
Hispanics who (legally) kill a black are now officially 'white-Hispanic', a term also never before heard.
And the soft genocide of the white race continues.

They cry for transparency in all things but won't tell the public , their audience who was responsible for this smear. But in the next quote from them they say:

"Capus said that the network "takes its responsibility seriously" and has undertaken rigorous efforts to formalize the editorial safeguards in place at the network."

The network takes it's responsibility seriously. Seriously? When they are affiliated with the most vile mean spirited propaganda machine seen on American air waves ever? By the way we are making rigorous efforts to formalize editorial safeguards. Really? This website is a prime example of your total failure in your previous efforts.

Organizations cue from their leaders

When the leadership lies and deceives, or condones those who do, the members rightly assume that they not only can do the same, but that they will be rewarded for doing so. NBC's corruption is a direct reflection of its leadership.

NBC's alibis fall short, but it's apparent that they believe they merely have to stave off criticism until the headlines bump this story completely off the scope. Anytime someone says that a person(s) responsible has been fired but decline to name them, no one has really been fired.

Either the producer was an incompetent boob, and should have been fired long before this bit of video contortion aired, or he did it deliberately.

Which is it?

And as far as the "edited to fit the time allotted" story, isn't it just the oddest thing that the ONLY place the editing could be done just happened to make Mr. Zimmerman look bad.

OK, they needed to edit the tape for time.

And they edited out that the guy looked like he was up to no good, that he was wandering around in the rain, looked like he might be on drugs (I don't know, was he swerving, was he unsteady?). but the part that the editor felt was necessary to the story was the guy's race.

More proof (as if any more needed) that it's LIBERALS who always consider race to be the important characteristic.

I can picture this poor, misunderstood "time editor":

Step 1: "We have the tape. Quick, put it on the air"

Step 2: "Oh, crap. It's too long, especially for such an unimportant event as this. Let's cut everything following Zimmerman's initial statement".

Step 3: "Darn! Now it's too short -- by one second. Doesn't anybody understand the intricacies of on-air presentation? What do I do now?"

Step 4: <Brilliant Idea> "I've got it. Since I only need 1 more second of stuff, I'll just put Zimmerman's 'He looks black' response in. {fiddle...snip...glue...paste}. There. Perfect! Now I've got the full 9 seconds which my network demands. This is great stuff. Everyone will truly appreciate the technical aspects of my editing, won't they?"

...Step 93: <From NBC Executives> "Yeah, that's all it was. A simple technical editing mistake. What's all the fuss? Nothing to see here. What's the next topic. Oh yeah, I see. The election. Well, I think we've learned our lesson. Hire better editors, someone with a keener sense of air time. Then -- back to business as usual".

If the clip was really being edited down for time, that's an exchange that would be first on the chopping block.

Very Simple Question(s) To The Producer And . . . .

Submitted by Bourbeau on Sun, 04/08/2012 - 8:06am.

To the senior producer on the staff:

a. How did you determine the piece to be cut and who did you discuss it with?

b. At any point in the discussion, did you acknowledge the piece being cut would
skey the storyline with racial overtones?

c. When the cut was made, who reviewed the clip prior to going on the air.

This is my sense of what occurred:

a. The producer deliberately selected the piece cut for the obvious reasosn.

b. He discussed it with his peers and they agreed it would work.

c.. Worse yet, this is standard operating procedure with these peopel; they're
never identified; rarely accountable to anyone; and sit at their desks laughing
at how easy it is to skey a story and make an impact on the day's news.

If I were the CEO at Comcast, Steve Capus would be out immmediately for his feeble
defense of the indefensible.

You're kidding right? Let me give you a tutorial on Corporate behavior. When they are caught in a deliberate action that embarasses them, they will fire whomever have to in order to protect their assess. The fact that NBC fired the producer is, in and of it self, an admisstion that their newsroom has become a cess pool of biased reporting. In this particular case, it bordered on being a contributor to a potential riot in Sandford, FL and elsewhere. And while you're thinking this was "just a mistake", ask yourself how in hell MSNBC is allowing Al Sharpton to continue his on-air spiel while being on-site and contributing to the racial stirrings.

The editing saved 5 seconds

Submitted by ThisnThat on Sun, 04/08/2012 - 9:01am.

The editing saved 5 seconds of air time. Since we first learned of the tape's existance, how many air-time hours has NBC/MSNBC contributed to the story? One? Three? 30? So, let's say that NBC was correct, initially. It was important to save 5 seconds. But after how many hours of airtime does that savings become irrevelant? When can NBC tell the world: "We can add the 5 seconds back"? When will NBC stop acting like spoiled little punks, and quit thinking they have a right to destroy individuals with their lies and bully tactics? When will COMCAST realize they -- as owners -- have a responsibility that is uniquely entrusted to them through our first ammendment? When?

How do we know?

Submitted by Model850 on Sun, 04/08/2012 - 12:40pm.

With as many lies as spew forth from NBC (and other media outlets) how do we really know anyone actually was fired?

All the tap dancing the network has done around this incident easily can be construed as this "firing" is just another smokescreen to deflect criticism. "Someone" was fired. No name. "Others" were disciplined. No names. Sounds exactly like the "some people say," "many believe" and "there are those who" dodges used by the news media to (try to) cover their bias.

I guess we're not going to see Spike Lee tweeting the person's home address?

And what about the "reporter", Ron Allen? I guess we're to believe he was completely out of the loop - lol. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he was standing right there saying, "yeah, that's good. I like it."

This pompous ass should be fired. How dumb does he think we are? He knows exactly what happened, his "unbiased" news department did what it always does-idealogy first. The extremely liberal bias of NBC starts at the top, Roberts-head of Comcast is a big nobama supporter and in his far left liberal mind he sees nothing wrong-who do you think lets MSNBC get away with all the far left liberal crap they spew.

I'm so over NBC

Submitted by pbthinker on Sun, 04/08/2012 - 1:45pm.

I wouldn't depend on NBC for news about a treed cat. The truth be known, they're only marginally worse than their cohorts in the LSM. How much editing and activism has been going on at ABC, CBS, and CNN? When they get caught, it just disappears, yet the damage, once it airs, is already done.

These networks are directly responsible for the level of racial tension now going on throughout the country and they really need to accept responsiblity for what they've done and then do something to try and diffuse it, although it's way too late for that.

NBC however, has been the chief culprit, not only with their hit-job editing, but also letting Sharpton do his political agitation on their airwaves. Isn't it strange that, when this is all over, one of the few people left with any credibility will be George Zimmerman.

Vote Republican - Then you'll only be called a racist one more time.

Until we get a name NO producer was fired!!

Submitted by gopcongress on Sun, 04/08/2012 - 2:34pm.

I will state this: NO producer was fired!!

If a producer was fired, we would have heard about his name by now. He would be bitching and moaning to the heavens, and even naming names. Therefore, I do NOT BELIEVE ONE WORD from NBC.

My contention is that the NBC brass KNEW what was going to happen, and once the ensuing fallout occurred over the tape, they had their stories, lame as they are, at the ready.

Note how they say a bunch of staff were disciplined. Yet, no names out of THOSE people either!

I accuse NBC of LYING about the disposition of employees regarding the Zimmerman tape massacre.

Matthew, can you use your contacts to find out names? In addition, this is another Media Mash segment waiting to happen for Brent and Sean.

Liar Liar pants on fire... The real question NBC should be asking is what type of culture they developed where an employee be one, two or even three knowing edit a tape and expected that no was gonna catch it. We recognize the main stream has sold their sold to Democrat party but come on now. The edit was in the middle of the recording, not the end or beginning in the middle. This was a concerted effort to slant the news. My how the peacock has fallen....

Trayvon and Tawana

Submitted by berlet98 on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 12:07pm.

Trayvon and Tawana

The mainstream media just love scandals whether they have any basis in fact or not. If those scandals involve race or sex, all the better. If they have both, it’s a bonanza. If they serve to perpetuate racial division, it’s orgasmic!

Scandalous rumors sell papers and entice viewers to tune in and instigate many to use up their copious spare time by taking to the streets and protesting, regardless of whether they understand the issues or not. It’s something to do.

In view of what rumors tend to arouse the demonstrators and cause them to protest, wave placards, and chant mindless slogans, their protests should be classified as expressions of selective indignation since not all terrible reports bother them in the least.

For example, frequent and verifiable news stories of African-Americans brutally attacking and killing Caucasians or blacks murdering their fellow blacks never bring out slews of blacks to march and condemn the violence which is tearing apart the black community as well as the fabric of American society.

I guess there is just so much time for agitators to stage demonstrations and protestors to protest and certain violence doesn’t merit attention from them–or from the national media.

Phony scandals inciting mindless protesting has become one of America’s favorite outdoor sports. The Trayvon Martin affair is the latest divertissement for the protesting class but it is hardly the first example of selective indignation and certainly will not be the last.

The chief problem with African-American upheavals is that they have so often been proven to be outrageous lies.

The jury is still out on the Trayvon Martin affair. Black race-hucksters have already tried, convicted, and sentenced George Zimmerman to death in a rush to publicity but the truth of that tragedy is slowly leaking out that Trayvon Martin was hardly an innocent saint and George Zimmerman is far from a racist demon, despite initial MSM reports to the contrary.

Eyewitnesses have confirmed that Martin assaulted Zimmerman and uttered death threats and he is alleged to have been a low-life, drug-pushing thief and gang-banger.

Both blacks and whites have defended Zimmerman, he is on record as lodging a racism complaint against the same white cops who responded to the scene of the shooting, and ABC and NBC have admitted they intentionally doctored reports and audio tapes to falsely show he is a racist.

The networks never admitted their unethical, biased purpose of sanctifying Martin and crucifying Zimmerman in the interests of political correctness and placating black demagogues.

When the Florida special prosecutor announces the results of her findings, the hucksters will no doubt reject the truth just as they denied the realities in the notorious cases of Tawana Brawley of Wappingers Falls, New York and Crystal Gail Mangum of Raleigh, North Carolina.

Agitation always trumps reality for race-baiters.

In the event Tawana’s racist fabrications have been forgotten, back on November 27th, 1987, 15 year old Tawana simply had to see a former boyfriend, Todd Buxton, then a prisoner in a local jail. As any self-respecting teenage girl would do, she skipped school and took a bus to visit him.

Four days later, Tawana returned and was seen secreting herself in a large green garbage bag. When she was finally “rescued,” her clothing was ripped, torn, burned, and covered with feces and and “KKK,” “NIGGER” and “BITCH” were emblazoned on her chest and torso.

Tawana claimed she had been “abducted by several white men shortly after she got off the bus; the men, one of whom wore a badge, took her to a wooded area and sexually abused her over a period of several days.” Amazingly she was unable to identify any of her attackers who had repeatedly raped and sexually abused her for four days. . .
