WaPo: Where Is the Good Iraq News?

The past few days have brought some good news for people frustrated by the elite media's systemic liberal tilt: First we had the Project for Excellence in Journalism admitting that Democratic presidential candidates get better coverage than their Republican counterparts, then came the news that left-wing blowhard Keith Olbermann was exposed (yet again) as a hypocrite for failing to pay taxes.

Now here's some more good news for your Sunday afternoon: The center-left Washington Post editorial page calls out the foreign policy Chicken Littles who've been eager to pronounce Iraq a failure from the start. In an editorial headlined "Don't look now, but the U.S.-backed government and army may be winning the war," the paper presents some essential facts:

There's been a relative lull in news coverage and debate about Iraq in recent weeks -- which is odd, because May could turn out to have been one of the most important months of the war. While Washington's attention has been fixed elsewhere, military analysts have watched with astonishment as the Iraqi government and army have gained control for the first time of the port city of Basra and the sprawling Baghdad neighborhood of Sadr City, routing the Shiite militias that have ruled them for years and sending key militants scurrying to Iran. At the same time, Iraqi and U.S. forces have pushed forward with a long-promised offensive in Mosul, the last urban refuge of al-Qaeda. So many of its leaders have now been captured or killed that U.S. Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker, renowned for his cautious assessments, said that the terrorists have "never been closer to defeat than they are now."

Iraq passed a turning point last fall when the U.S. counterinsurgency campaign launched in early 2007 produced a dramatic drop in violence and quelled the incipient sectarian war between Sunnis and Shiites. Now, another tipping point may be near, one that sees the Iraqi government and army restoring order in almost all of the country, dispersing both rival militias and the Iranian-trained "special groups" that have used them as cover to wage war against Americans. It is -- of course -- too early to celebrate; though now in disarray, the Mahdi Army of Moqtada al-Sadr could still regroup, and Iran will almost certainly seek to stir up new violence before the U.S. and Iraqi elections this fall. Still, the rapidly improving conditions should allow U.S. commanders to make some welcome adjustments -- and it ought to mandate an already-overdue rethinking by the "this-war-is-lost" caucus in Washington, including Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). [...]

If the positive trends continue, proponents of withdrawing most U.S. troops, such as Mr. Obama, might be able to responsibly carry out further pullouts next year. Still, the likely Democratic nominee needs a plan for Iraq based on sustaining an improving situation, rather than abandoning a failed enterprise. That will mean tying withdrawals to the evolution of the Iraqi army and government, rather than an arbitrary timetable; Iraq's 2009 elections will be crucial. It also should mean providing enough troops and air power to continue backing up Iraqi army operations such as those in Basra and Sadr City. When Mr. Obama floated his strategy for Iraq last year, the United States appeared doomed to defeat. Now he needs a plan for success.

Winning the War Invalidates ALL the Democratic platforms

The MSM cannot Report on Success of the War, and at the same time put Halo's over Obama's head, Push the "Pull out Now" scenario, and even McClellan's book starts to look like a 2nd Opinion that was WRONG  .

I can get News about Iraq's Success on my Cell Phone, but I cannot watch MSM and get anything but Democratic B>S> M.S. and Piled Higher and Deeper.

McCain is the ONLY Republican that can get face time on MSM and Talk about Winning the Iraq War, and the MSM doesn't even want to cover McCain.

Pelosi doesn't have a Clue, and IF Obamarama the promised one does finally VISIT Iraq, IF he can bring himself to report the TRUTH, then he has to admit his Foreign Policy, AND that of the Dems. is Totally out of Touch (like the MSM) with the Reality of the Victory in Iraq.

Bet Against the American Military, and you LOSE !!

US Military Deaths In Iraq Hit All Time Low In May

19 American soldiers died in Iraq in May 2009.

That is the lowest monthly total since the war began more than five years ago.

I hav enot been able to

I hav enot been able to keep track this weekend.

If we did not have a casualty on Saturday or Sunday, then because we had not had one in the previous five days we will have gone an entire week without a casualty in Iraq.

ANd the press will TRUMPET this no?

And in Chicago....

25 Homicides in Chicago in May 2008

12 in Oakland CA

92 to date in Philadelphia

Who knows how many in Detroit? Home of Kwame

and they bitch about Iraq.

Iraq good news

Opening salvo in covering obamas tactic change on Iraq-- Nothing more.

You are absolutely right, Matt

The MSM will now begin the framework of insulating Obama from criticism for being on the wrong side of the surge.

The likely scenario will be the continued drumbeat of how much the war costs, the number of military suffering from PTSD, and the continued defiance of Iran's involvement in killing US soldiers.

icasualties shows .68

icasualties shows .68 Coaliton deaths last month, the lowest next to 2/04 @.79. Iraqi civilian deaths are listed as down about 1/3 over April.

The msm is not into positives, so do not stay up all night expecting them to show this. It would sink the dems. WAPo is a start.

McCain should call for a pull out now

And say that we will be able to start pulling out because we are winning not because we lost like we would have if we did it when Obama wanted.

Fox News Sunday

I believe it was Bill Sammon on Fox News Sunday today who speculated that the reason Barack Obama has not gone back to Iraq in more than two years is because the Surge is working, and Barack, of course, was opposed to the Surge from the beginning. Even after the Surge began to show success, Obama indicated it was a failure.

Now that McCain has challenged him to go to Iraq and talk to the troops and our generals, Obama will have to plan a trip to Iraq in the near future. It will be interesting to see if he changes his plan for pulling the troops out of Iraq within 16 months because he believes “our priority had to be finishing the fight in Afghanistan.” http://www.barackoba...

Ain't it grand?  Yesterday he bowed to right wing pressure to leave his church, and now he's gonna follow McCain into Iraq.

It's like leading a prize steer around the rodeo ring.

What does this mean?

Is the demedia now allowing us to call success in Iraq a trend?

The number of US casualties in Iraq have only been dropping consistently for the last 8 months so we definitely don't want to rush to judgement.

Except of course when Dem politicians and their demedia hacks are telling us the Iraq war is lost, the surge has failed, US military is flushing korans, Marines are killing innocent civilians in Haditha, the NSA is eavesdropping on American citizens, torture at Gitmo, etc, etc.

Dare I really call our engagement in Iraq a success.  I feel a little dirty....

Edit - Oh my, I nearly forgot the exclusive Dem-only club -- the Out of Iraq Caucus.  Will they be shutting down their subversive shop now?  Seems like a waste of our tax dollars to this commenter.  But then it always was.

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.

The MSM's Problem

The dilemma the "objective" media has now is that Iraq is no longer the most important issue in the upcoming election, the economy is. All polling shows this to be true, and the numbers are astounding.

Last fall, the war was the number one election 2008 issue, but now the economy is beating it by a 2 to 1 margin, sometimes even more. That's not the scenario they expected or wanted.

They're still trying though. Be sure to check out today's hallucinogenic NYT editorial on the war.

Yes, yes, I repeat myself

There are 2, count them, 2 capable armies in Iraq. The mightiest army on the planet, the U.S Army. The army the mightiest army trained, the Iraqi Army. Turns out they are very capable. The fat lady is gargling in the wings, she is ready for her moment.
