CBS's Rose to Santorum: Why Are You Focused on Porn, Obama as 'Appeaser'?

By Matthew Balan | March 19, 2012 | 18:04

Matthew Balan's picture

On Monday's CBS This Morning, Charlie Rose accused GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum of focusing too much on foreign policy and social issues, instead of the economy: "You talk about President Obama being an appeaser. You talk about [Obama] being soft on pornography and those kinds of things, rather than the bread and butter economic issues that you say are essential to who will win."

Earlier in the interview, Rose hinted at the left-leaning talking point that the Republican Party was waging a "war on women." He asked the former Pennsylvania senator, "Do you believe that there are particular issues of concern to women more than other voters?" [audio clips available here; video below the jump]

The CBS anchor's hyping of the pornography issue, which isn't even a major part of Santorum's campaign strategy, came towards the end of the segment. The Republican countered Rose's "particular issues of concern to women" issue by stating, in part, that "women are a diverse group, just like men are a diverse group. I think the idea of trying to buttonhole people into one particular group or, you know, philosophy is- has been tried. It just doesn't work."

The veteran journalist followed up by citing Santorum's website and playing up his "appeaser" accusation against the President and the pornography issue. The former senator answered that these were two issues among many, and went on the attack against his Republican opponent Mitt Romney:

Former Senator Rick Santorum, (R), Presidential Candidate; & Charlie Rose, CBS News Anchor | NewsBusters.orgROSE: ...[W]hen you go to your website, you talk about President Obama being an appeaser. You talk about [Obama] being soft on pornography and those kinds of things, rather than the bread and butter economic issues that you say are essential to who will win- not only the nomination, but also the general election.

SANTORUM: Well, Charlie, I mean, on our website, we have a whole lot of issues. I mean, that's important for people to know what your position is on a whole variety of issues. People write in, they ask and reporters ask- and, you know, we're very transparent about what we believe. There isn't just one issue. I mean, Mitt Romney thinks that this election is going to be about, you know, who can best manage the nanny state of Washington. No, this election is about freedom. This election is about a fundamental change in Washington, D.C. This is about, you know, reducing and- the size of government, getting government out of people's lives, particularly when it comes to their health and energy and financial services and banking. And, you know, we've got- we have a government that's trying to take over different sectors of the economy, and Mitt Romney joined Barack Obama in a lot of those takeovers.

On Friday, CNN's Fredrick Whitfield did something similar on the Newsroom program. Whitfield asked Republican strategist Ana Navarro, "Should porn, pornography, even be an issue that Santorum or any other candidate at this point should be talking about?"

The anchor then cited a former colleague of Santorum with regard to the fight over the GOP presidential race: "At the same time, Senator McCain said recently, this is the dirtiest campaign that he's ever seen."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Rose has a record of playing up side issues in the Republican nomination fight. On January 17, 2012, the CBS anchor hinted Newt Gingrich should apologize for a supposedly racially-tinged comment. Two days later, he touted a headline from the New York Times that claimed that "[Mitt] Romney's riches are being seen as new hurdle." During a previous interview with Rose on February 17, Santorum pushed back against the journalist's interrogating about supporter Foster Friess's "bad off-color joke" about contraception.

Earlier in March, the CBS anchor wondered if Republicans had "gone far enough in condemning" Rush Limbaugh's controversial attack on pro-ObamaCare contraception mandate activist Sandra Fluke.

The full transcript of Charlie Rose's interview of Rick Santorum, which aired 12 minutes into the 7 am Eastern hour of Monday's CBS This Morning, is available at MRC.org.

Submitted by jon_torlin on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 9:51am.

Ordinarily I would say "I can't help you," but the reality is that you can't be helped.  Two distinctive things.

There's legal porn and then there's illegal porn.  Liberals by definition do not see a distinction between the two.  You obviously aren't seeing the distinction by what Santorum's saying, so there's really no point in me trying to explain it to you.  Others might want to, others have tried.

Here's an example of not making the distinction between legal and illegal:  Conservatives have a problem with illegal immigration.  Liberals don't.

I gave you the answer for God's sake!  The distinction between legal and illegal, and if you can't figure that out, you really can't be helped!

And I don't care if you claim to vote republican, that doesn't mean a damn thing.  I know dems/liberals who have voted for republicans before.  And I would call McCain a liberal even though he's a Republican.  Same with others like Snowe, Collins, Scott Brown of Mass, indsey Graham.  They are liberals.

Edit

It sure sounds line his interpretation or current law is not allow any obscene material

"For many decades, the American public has actively petitioned the United States Congress for laws prohibiting distribution of hard-core adult pornography.

Congress has responded.  Current federal “obscenity” laws prohibit distribution of hardcore (obscene) pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier. Rick Santorum believes that federal obscenity laws should be vigorously enforced.  “If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so.”

But, I'll take you up on your "book". Prior to his neck injury, Peyton hadn't missed a single game in seventeen years--college and pros, not even counting high school.  He doesn't "break down".  Now, God forbid, if he were to suffer a severe blow to the neck, that could be a different and possibly tragic story.

Tim will land on his feet, be it with Denver or another team.

I truly admire Peyton Manning. He's been a consummate professional player, and he's a gentleman, too.

It's John Elway I'm having the problem with. IMO, he's throwing away the future of the franchise with both hands....he has a fan base who is stirred up, and ready to rock! With Tebow at the helm (and a couple of good draft picks)....he can build a team that can win for years. But he's going all in, and gambling with Manning for the short term gain. Who may or may not be up to the task. Truly, I worry about his durability. He isn't capable of taking 1/10th of the hits that Tebow can take....and just because he's back there in the pocket won't change the way the line is playing.

As for Timmy....he'll be fine wherever he lands. In or out of football.

But I would truly like to slap the arrogant John Elway, for defying the football Gods, and his fanbase.

I wish Peyton all the best....if Timmy stays, I'm sure Peyton will do his best to mentor him. And if Timmy goes....(please Bill Belichek!)...he'll be fine. And if he gets picked up by a crappy team, and quits playing....more the better for the children of this world.

It's all good. Except for John Elway. A pox on him (but not his house). He's an arrogant a*******.

The Broncos gave away the future

Submitted by Unsane on Wed, 03/21/2012 - 8:50am.

Raiding a few sites, I can't believe that the opinions in Broncos country are so mixed. The Broncos faithful have, shockingly, their share of Tebow haters.

Jer thinks that the Denver Colts-West have a 10-1 shot of winning the Super Bowl? What a crock. More like 1000-1. But then, Jer's obsequious love for Manning is legendary.

I am with Blonde. Or, let's just say Peyton keeps it together and puts together mad stats for the better part of the upcoming season. He'll get a nasty hit around Week 10, and he gets sidelined. Permanently. We'll have some scrub backup come out, and the situation that happened to the Colts last season will repeat itself in Colts-West. At which point the Broncos are so totally screwed. And who's to blame for that? John Elway, who mortgaged the future for a 35-year-old QB whose productivity was in fact in decline for awhile, who is past his prime, who came off a season where he didn't play because he had four neck injuries.

Many of my friends cannot understand why I am so glum about this idiotic decision. "Manning is one of the best to ever play the game!!!" they say. I tell them the same thing: "Tebow has something Manning does not have: youth."

One more thing: remember, Brett Favre was given up on by Atlanta after one season, in 1991. Jerry Glanville called him a "wasted draft pick" and sent him packing to Green Bay. Is Tebow the next Brett Favre? Maybe, and that is why I am horrified at what has happened. If, in 2020, say, Tebow has rings and statistical success, the Broncos fans are going to be quite unhappy, and quite a few of them, me included, will be saying "I told you so".

I believe that Elway will find himself in the same predicament as the dog crossing the bridge with a piece of meat. He saw his reflection in the water and the other dog's piece looked bigger than the one he had in his mouth. He dropped his piece and jumped in the water to get the bigger one and ended up with nothing.

Submitted by Boudin on Wed, 03/21/2012 - 9:08pm.

I think the Broncs now have quite a good chance to will it all. When Payton was with the Colts they were a Championship contender every year. With-out him they get the first pick. Denver has a great D and can run the ball well. Manning will make the receivers catch the freakin ball, or find some that will.

Colts really laid an egg here, fact is they suck. And with a green
QB they will continue to suck. They should had kept Manning and traded the top picks for more picks. So when Manning does retire they have a pretty good team. One of those picks could be for another QB to groom under Manning.

Unfortunately Tebow is going to the Jets. Fact is Sanchez is their guy, and their coach is a nitwit. Tebow makes little chance in NY. He sure would had made some folks in Jacksonville happy though.

I don't care WHO is saying 10-1 odds. They are full of crap. The Broncos might win the division this year but only because their opposition is weaker than they are. The AFC West is one of the weakest divisions in football.

The Broncos gambled (unnecessarily and stupidly). All Manning needs is one crushing hit. And that's it. Season over, 10-15 years in the football wilderness commences.

Not in a rush, but

Submitted by Unsane on Wed, 03/21/2012 - 8:52am.

Why are you so embarrassed and ashamed of people who bring up evil social issues?

Don't worry. You can get me a response after you are done giving Romney a pedicure with your tongue.

Great Job, Redfish

Submitted by stratman on Mon, 03/19/2012 - 10:33pm.

Was looking at one of the links for Reagan and read some of the other stories on that day, November 15, 1986:

  • Rev. Edward Malloy, newly appointed president of University Of Notre Dame, intends the school should remain a "sanctuary for innovative church thinking".
  • "Force-feeding of reading, writing and arithmetic on pre-schoolers often undermines a child's self confidence, and can lead to learning problems in later grades..."
  • OPEC to fix the price of a barrel of crude at $18 - four dollars more than the then current price.
  • A former Cuban sailor stowawayed in the freezing nose of a Panamanian cargo plane to Miami because of the TV program Miami Vice.
  • Reagan meets with Thatcher to discuss new US sanctions against Syria for its role in sponsoring terrorism, as well as discussing measures to control nuclear weapons and combat international terrorism.

Look what's happened since then!

The price of Rib Eye has exploded!

Submitted by Kingfish17 on Mon, 03/19/2012 - 10:47pm.

Rib Eye was $3.96 a pound. Glad I had freezer room back in 1986. Of course, nothing beats watching the Andy Griffith Show and catching the old prices in the window of Foley's grocery store.

If you want more sticker shock then check out the TV show Dobie Gillis. His father had a grocery store. The prices will give you a chuckle.

Apparently, Romney brought it

Submitted by NC Cop on Mon, 03/19/2012 - 7:37pm.

Apparently, Romney brought it up as well.

http://hotair.com/archives/2012/03/19/flashback-to-2007-romney-made-porn...

'While running for president last cycle, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in 2007 cut a campaign ad called “Ocean,” where he vowed to “clean up the water in which our kids are swimming.”

“I’d like to keep pornography from coming up on their computers,” Romney said in the ad.

He also expressed a desire in the ad to “keep drugs off the streets” and “see less violence and sex on TV and in video games and in movies.”

Submitted by Van Halen on Mon, 03/19/2012 - 7:44pm.

Thanks to the geniuses on the Right who are now on the defensive about porn and women's issues while the country runs over 100% debt to GDP ratio, our troops are involved in over ten MENA and Central African conflicts, our deficit is skyrocketing, unemployment rages out of control, the record death toll in Afghanistan worsens, Obama grants himself the power to declare martial law, Solyndra and gunwalker are swept under the rug, the spending is out of control, gas/food/clothing prices are rising, foreclosures are hitting records, banks are failing at record numbers, war looms with Iran and Syria, the Mexican border is wide open, and the government has all but declared war on the Catholic Church.

I see Axelrod's fingerprints all over this "Republicans hate women" adventure. The rattlesnakes slithering around in his head are very pleased.

Santorum will McCain his way

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Tue, 03/20/2012 - 12:42am.

Santorum will McCain his way right out the door becuase he continues to let the left controll the debate and like an idiot he answers them and continues to go on their useless shows. The moron could win if he would attack illegal immigration.

Non, je ne regrette rien. "You aren't angry because I might be a racist, you're angry because you know I'm right".
