Yahoo Trumpets Study Supposedly Linking Conservatism to Low IQ

Yahoo! News, which recently entered into a partnership with ABC News, somehow thought it fit to use its "Destination 2012" site for the 2012 election to highlight a new study that found a purported link between conservatism and low intelligence. The headline for the story by LiveScience.com's Stephanie Pappas exclaimed, "Low IQ & Conservative Beliefs Linked to Prejudice."

Pappas wasted little time to note that apparently, "low-intelligence adults tend to gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, the study found." She cited the study's lead researcher, Gordon Hodson of Brock University in Ontario, Canada, who claimed that "those ideologies, in turn, stress hierarchy and resistance to change, attitudes that can contribute to prejudice, Hodson wrote."

The writer buried a further explanation from Hodson 11 paragraphs later, who tried to give a more nuanced look at his findings:

Hodson was quick to note that the despite the link found between low intelligence and social conservatism, the researchers aren't implying that all liberals are brilliant and all conservatives stupid. The research is a study of averages over large groups, he said.

"There are multiple examples of very bright conservatives and not-so-bright liberals, and many examples of very principled conservatives and very intolerant liberals," Hodson said.

However, just two paragraphs later, Pappas upped the ante again with another quote from the lead researcher, and included slanted terminology in her explanation of a second study:

Nonetheless, there is reason to believe that strict right-wing ideology might appeal to those who have trouble grasping the complexity of the world.

"Socially conservative ideologies tend to offer structure and order," Hodson [picture at right] said, explaining why these beliefs might draw those with low intelligence. "Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

In another study, this one in the United States, Hodson and Busseri compared 254 people with the same amount of education but different levels of ability in abstract reasoning. They found that what applies to racism may also apply to homophobia. People who were poorer at abstract reasoning were more likely to exhibit prejudice against gays. As in the U.K. citizens, a lack of contact with gays and more acceptance of right-wing authoritarianism explained the link.

Stephanie Pappas, LiveScience.com | Found at http://www.techmedianetwork.com/our-brands/livescience.htmlThe LiveScience.com [picture at right] contributor also turned to psychologist Brian Nosek of University of Virginia, who asserted that "polling data and social and political science research do show that prejudice is more common in those who hold right-wing ideals that those of other political persuasions."

This isn't the first dubious study the liberal media has highlighted in recent days. On Monday, Reuters put out a one-sided article trumpeting the results of a study by pro-abortion researchers, which claimed that having an abortion was safer than giving birth.

Does Yahoo exist? I'd say so considering they've already gotten over 156 million unique visitors to their site this month. That's some serious traffic.

Compared to Newsbusters 386,000 unique visitors this month (which is a huge number), I'd say Yahoo's still a pretty big deal.

How about trumpeting studies linking liberalism to lying? ABC

Submitted by Gary Hall on Thu, 01/26/2012 - 6:15pm.

Science has the answer to much more than that, ABC.

Liberals generally have more white matter in their brains.

White matter is the substance of fast firing communications in the brain. The more white matter - the faster the signals are bouncing around.  That's not always good . . is this correct .. is this false  . . what about this . . what about that . . too much going on in here - I can't decide . . so what is best for me.

What's interesting is how such brain activity translates to the thought or decision process.

Those with less white matter - thus, more gray - are apt to see things more in black and white. This works, that does not. This is right - that is wrong. Likely to be CEO types. This is not about intelligence but rather, process.  Someone who is attempting to formulate a decision on an issue, that rapid fire blows thru numerous intelligent arguments out loud, is not necessarily smarter, than one who simply understands the correct answer, and sticks with it.

Those with more white matter, seem to reside in the more creative-artsy side of life; includes artists, composers, intellectuals/professors, etc.

Both make it to the political spectrum.

Interestingly, they see things in shades of gray; things aren't absolute -everything is complex -and has to be diced up and analyzed. This process happens quickly - rapid fire negotiations are going on in the brain, attempting to come to the decision the subject wants to come to. It's no longer about what is; rather, what I want it to be.

In fact - the ability to distinguish truth from fiction may suffer.

From a Los Angeles Times' column -- 2007: Getting inside their heads ... really inside

Researchers found that the liars had significantly more "white matter" - the wiring in the brain - and slightly less "gray matter", than the truthful subjects.

President Clinton's moral lapses and problems with bad judgment and excitement-seeking behavior -- indicative of problems in the prefrontal cortex.

(;~> gary

Additional Ref:

Oct 17, 2005 — Brain abnormalities linked to pathological lying NEW YORK (Reuters Health) -

Pathological liars may have structural abnormalities in their brains, a new study suggests.

Dr. Adrian Raine and Yaling Yang of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and colleagues found that individuals who habitually lied and cheated had less gray matter and more white matter in their prefrontal cortex than normal people. They report their findings in the British Journal of Psychiatry.

Past studies have found that the prefrontal cortex shows heightened activity when normal people lie, and it is believed to be involved in both learning moral behavior and feeling remorse.

Because gray matter consists of brain cells, while white matter forms the "wiring" or connections between these cells, pathological liars may have more capacity to lie and fewer moral restraints, the authors suggest.
"They've got the equipment to lie, and they don't have the disinhibition that the rest of us have in telling the big whoppers," Raine said in a press release accompanying the study.

Liar, Liar, Your Prefrontal Cortex Is On Fire - A study appearing in the British Journal of Psychiatry

A study appearing in the British Journal of Psychiatry documents evidence of structural brain abnormalities in people who habitually lie, cheat and manipulate others.

The researchers, from the University of Southern California, built on previous research that showed there is heightened activity in the prefrontal cortex - the area of the brain that enables most people to feel remorse or learn moral behavior - when normal people lie. The new study provides evidence of structural differences in that area among pathological liars.

Submitted by NVRAT on Thu, 01/26/2012 - 6:48pm.

I would imagine that Conservatives common since and IQ` s are probably higher than most politicians and for sure the MSM. Now Yahoo falls into the latter category with the MSM. I still find it amazing that our debt has exceeded our GDP, which means the USA government owes more ($) that it takes in taxes, sort of sounds like the problem Greece has . How many households are doing well when they owe more in monthly payments than they make in monthly income? I guess they just keep charging on the plastic until they have no more credit. So do social conservative ideas really show a lower IQ and, liberal ideas show a higher IQ? you decide. A recent poll taken by one of the leading American polling organizations showed that conservatives have a much higher IQ than the average liberal but, I did not hear anything about that poll. It was based on current events concerning money, human resources, politics, and overall health of the country. The pollsters were astonished at how well conservatives kept abreast of current events, money and the political atmosphere. I think it was a Zogby Poll.

As they are academic psychologists, they are liberal fringe.

Submitted by drsamherman on Thu, 01/26/2012 - 7:31pm.

As I have stated multiple times, psychiatrists (who are trained and licensed physicians) have a great deal of mistrust with psychologists (who are NOT physicians) and especially with therapists and counselors (many of whom do not even hold a doctoral level degree). Our distrust emanates primarily from the uncontrolled metastasis of agenda-driven nonsense in their respective academic fields and in particular the distinct lack of clinical and scientific rigor which is glaring in useless, vapid studies of this type.

What constitutes a "conservative" or a "gay rights opponent" or any label is entirely arbitrary dependent on the ability of the social sciences researcher to concoct whatever definition is convenient to their predetermined results. The methodologies typically do not meet the more rigid standards of clinical studies which would be required at the level of FDA filings or for insurance reimbursement because of the inherent bias of the investigators.

The brain imaging studies were, for the most part, nothing more than wastes of money. We certainly could have used more brain mapping and imaging studies in serious physical and mental illnesses such as Parkinson's disease, resistant major depression and schizophrenia. Instead, we have precious money and resources wasted on garbage research printed in third-rate hack journals that no one else reads but the idiots in the press who regurgitate it, always conflating association with causality or gross misinterpretation which the investigators fail to adequately address because it advances their own personal political biases.

Cool-> econ 101: making stuff, selling stuff, moving it around

Submitted by vrwc13 on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 10:11am.

President Obama said at a campaign event in Las Vegas, Nevada. "I laid out a blueprint for an economy that's built to last, that has a firm foundation. Where we're making stuff and selling stuff and moving it around and UPS drivers are dropping things off everywhere."

..was he speaking to a kindergarten class?

Actually, I think he said

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 10:30am.

Actually, I think he said 'makin' stuff and sellin' stuff' and movin' it around'............which is REALLY a serious and precient economic statement!!! Kind of like using 'hope' as a campaign strategy. My grandson makes more coherent statements on a daily basis. I wonder how the State-Run Media will parse this 'economic blueprint'.............somehow it will be 'brilliant' and 'well-though out'. Jeeeeeeez............

The Aussies use the word 'stuff' in a very descriptive way, when they say 'get stuffed'. So, in the spirit of talkin' the same language as our Boy WONder - I say to Barry Soetoro Barack Hussein Obama - GET STUFFED!!!

The "Story Of Stuff"

Submitted by Cool Arrow on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 10:59am.

It makes sense, as there is a Socialist project, The Story Of Stuff, that presents to schoolchildren the evils of capitalism.

Mr. Obama is using that presentation as a reference.

I'm really going to have to

Submitted by killa37 on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 11:44am.

I'm really going to have to pay attention to what my grandson is learning in school, now that he's in kindergarden. At least he's going to a private school, but I want to know about what's been 'taught' there...........so far, it's just the 3 R's, as far as I can tell, which is what it should be.

The "Story Of Stuff" = story of socialism

Submitted by vrwc13 on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 12:31pm.

... a 20 minute 'cartoon' about 'evil' Americas over-consuming.  What the heck, just blame Bush or maybe Reagan too!  Or maybe all those low IQ conservatives are to blame.   Blame 'em all.

Just more Public School propaganda, another reason upon many why my kids don't go there.

Stuff! And More Stuff

Obama's "Stuff" Economy:

"On Tuesday at the State of the Union, I laid out my vision for how we move forward," President Obama said at a campaign event in Las Vegas, Nevada. "I laid out a blueprint for an economy that's built to last, that has a firm foundation. Where we're making stuff and selling stuff and moving it around and UPS drivers are dropping things off everywhere."

Economic professor.  Not.

And never forget

Submitted by Willis_Leon_Johnson on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 10:00pm.

One of his 'great accomplishments' in college was his stint as a "professor teaching Constitutional law".

At least that was the spin before it was proven that he was never a REAL professor. Not that there are any REAL professors that have the knowledge and skills to teach much of anything in colleges anymore.  Least of all Constitutional Law.

The logical flaws and

Submitted by Rusty Shackleford on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 3:23am.

The logical flaws and absurdities mentioned in this article could be discussed for weeks, but I'd like to highlight this:

----------
"strict right-wing ideology might appeal to those who have trouble grasping the complexity of the world"
"Socially conservative ideologies tend to offer structure and order"
----------

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Left routinely critique the complex and dynamic response of individuals to respond to issues in society (usually though fear-mongering) that things like capitalism supports while praising the one-size-fits-all solution of central planning that socialism promotes?

I'd love to see one of these Leftists explain why something like socialized medicine is a more complex system than private medicine. In a sense it is more complex but only for the government, but for society at large a program like that is laughly simplistic and naive compared to the complex dynamics of individuals interacting between each other to satisfy their medical needs.

Damn. There I go thinking again! I guess I need to hit The View tomorrow morning!

Stupid Conservatives

Submitted by Agnostic on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 11:56am.

While I could make another incredibly boring post analyzing this joke of a study it is hardly worth anyones effort to read. However, I would like to point out this one statement from the article and what is says about the people critiquing the analysis, "...it might not be a particular ideology that is linked to stupidity, but extremist views in general."

These people see Social Conservatism as an extremist viewpoint and therefor are clearly too biased to be 'scientific' analyst or critics.

Social Conservative viewpoint - Abortion should be illegal

Extreme Social Conservative viewpoint - (without the laws changing first) All abortion doctors and the women who have them should be charged with murder and associated fathers with murder/accessory to murder.

These people can't see a difference.

I can see how conservatism

Submitted by jbspry on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 8:05pm.

I can see how conservatism would be more appealing to people who aren't very smart; a set and unchanging view of the world would be preferable to one which constantly confronts them with new and unique challenges.
I can also see how progressivism would be preferred by schizophrenic paranoids: it is based entirely on illusions and fantasy and has no basis in reality.
