CNN's Parker Mirrors Spitzer's Line About 'Fringe' in Republican Party

By Matthew Balan | October 12, 2010 | 16:17

Matthew Balan's picture

On Monday's Parker-Spitzer, CNN's Kathleen Parker picked up where her co-host Eliot Spitzer left off on Friday, bashing conservatives as "fringe elements" inside the Republican Party. Parker continued the Tea Party movement was the result of the GOP "catering" to such elements and that "the kooks have come home to roost."

The pseudo-conservative columnist returned to her old habit of attacking conservatives during a panel discussion with Reason magazine's Nick Gillespie and NPR contributor John Ridley minutes into the 8 pm Eastern hour. Gillespie criticized how both Republicans and Democrats handled the past decade: "It's really awful, and we had- you know, six years of Republican rule, which was awful and disastrous on every level, and everything since then has been equally bad." The writer continued with a commentary on the phenomenon of Republican Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell selection in Delaware:

GILLESPIE: Of course, you're going to start looking in the bushes and you find people like Christine O'Donnell, who did run. I mean, she beat a nonentity- Mike Castle- everybody's like- oh, he's the great man of Delaware. Who cares? I mean, he's a life-long politician. He's a hack. He had no personality. And what she came out with and the reason she won is she was saying, 'hey, you know what? I'm going to cut spending. We're spending too much.'

Parker responded to this with her "fringe" remark about the Republican Party:

KATHLEEN PARKER: Well, let me ask you what you think of this. I would make the argument that the Republican Party has been catering to a- sort of a fringe element for a long time, trying to build the base and build a base. And now, is this the devil demanding his due? Are we finally now seeing the payback? I mean, William F. Buckley spent a lot of his time trying to marginalize who he considered to be the kooks, and now the kooks have come home to roost.

On Friday's program, Spitzer used the same "fringe" label in a similar context: "Why are there so many folks like her [Christine O'Donnell] who seem to be taking over the Republican Party? I mean, this is not Bob Dole's Republican Party anymore- thoughtful, serious people. This (sic) is people who are kind of- I hate to say it, but kind of from the fringe."

It isn't surprising that the two CNN hosts would be using identical language. Just over a month ago, on the September 8 edition of Anderson Cooper 360, both Parker and Spitzer agreed that Ground Zero mosque proponent Imam Feisal Rauf changed few minds due to his interview on Larry King Live earlier that evening. Then again, Parker is also consistent with her attacks on conservatives, as just a week earlier, on October 5, she slammed Sarah Palin as a "tease" and is on the record for admitting that she got her Pulitzer Prize for being a "conservative basher."

I do not know much about this

Submitted by gopsteve on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 4:33pm.

I do not know much about this show, not even sure when to find it...but wasn't it billed as a left/right show?

But then again, their "center" is so much to the left, they would consider Mccain a hard core conservative.

As for 'kooks', Ms. Parker need look no further than to her partner; perhaps she could ask him about his perversions.

BTW Kathleen; 'comes home to roost' has been used to death, so no points for originality.

Just another example of how there's only one way to "make it" in the MSM as a "conservative".

Attack other conservatives. They'll love you then, right up until the moment you look like you might win the nomination for President. At that point, you become just as evil as any other conservative.

Do you persist in calling Kathleen Parker a "pseudo conservative"?  She is a liberal call her what she is.  Conservatism is like respect it is earned not given.  Until she PROVES that she is a conservative then call her what she is a liberal.

We give status to these people Kathleen Parker, David Brooks, Joe Scarborough and the rest of this ilk like Christopher Buckley as identifing them as conservatives.  They are not conservatives.  They are liberals trying to make a "buck" calling themselves conservatives and then slicing and dicing real conservatives.

Please stop this nonsense of calling them conservatives.  Let them earn it.

Because she's being billed as a conservative

Submitted by gopcongress on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 4:59pm.

The reason that she's being called a "pseudo-conservative" is because she is billing herself, or at least CNN is billing her, as a conservative. The term is only reserved for those who misrepresent themselves by name.

This is why McCain is not a "pseudo-conservative", because he never proclaimed nor accepted that he was a conservative.

But your argument has merit. Our side can make the necessary corrections as necessary and call them by their actual positions, in addition to dissing their misrepresented status.

A mental image.

Submitted by Red Jeep on Wed, 10/13/2010 - 7:43am.

322,000 watched Parker Spitzer. That is about the size of Bakersfield California. So imagine a National TV show that's total audience is equivalent to one city in the country watching and the rest not.

Larry King's 196,000 is equivalent to the size of Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Local TV stations in NYC which has a population of 8 million+ probably have more viewers than CNN.

The New York Times sells almost a million newspapers a day.

Plus CNN is part of basis cable service in many parts of the country and they still can't get an audience.

Radio commercials

Submitted by jawebster1 on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 11:56pm.

Today, while listening to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, I was subjected, all day long, to radio commercials promoting the new Parker-Spitzer show.  I noticed the commercials tried to make him sound Conservative and also emphasized her Conservatism, no doubt because whoever produced the commercials, wanted the two of them to appeal to Conservative talk show radio listeners, of which, I am one.  I don't think they fooled anybody and especially, not me.  We all know that he is disgraced former Liberal politician and even though she is billed as a Conservative, we also know that she is as Liberal as he is.  I think whoever is paying for these ads is wasting their money.

do you mean this Kathleen Parker?

Submitted by Dr. Ron on Wed, 10/13/2010 - 5:21am.

BA and MA in Spanish? With client #9 (we know his credentials) she makes a great pair!

On Larry King Live she said of President Barack Obama: "I'm a big fan of Barack Obama as he came into office, and was not one of those Republicans (does she mean to imply she was more tha a RHINO?) who wanted him to do badly. I didn't want him to fail."

Parker does not believe that President Bill Clinton should have been impeached; at the same time, she believes Anita Hill's allegations against Clarence Thomas.

Recently she wrote that the best explanation for Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor rally is that he is a former alcoholic and that in organizing the event he was displaying the "grandiosity of the addict."

In one of her columns, Parker called Tea Party protesters teabaggers.** (look it up!)

She referred to evangelical Christians in another column as "gorillas," "low-brows," and "ooggedy-boogedy."
