Chris Hayes: I'm 'Uncomfortable' Calling Fallen Military 'Heroes'
Effete: affected, overrefined, and ineffectual; see "Chris Hayes." OK, I appended the name of the MSNBC host to the dictionary definition. But if ever you wanted to see the human embodiment of the adjective in action, have a look at the video from his MSNBC show this morning of the too-refined-by-half Hayes explaining why he is "uncomfortable" in calling America's fallen military members "heroes."
Hayes is worried that doing so is "rhetorically proximate" to justifications for more war. Oh, the rhetorical proximity! View the video after the jump.
In fairness, Hayes and the other panel members distinguished between their respect for the valor of the individual military members who had given their lives with the worthiness of the various causes in which they fought. Even so, what does it say about the liberal chattering class, which Hayes epitomizes, that it chokes on calling America's fallen what they rightly and surely are: heroes? Watch the hesitant Hayes in what almost seems a parody of the conflicted intellectual.
CHRIS HAYES: Thinking today and observing Memorial Day, that'll be happening tomorrow. Just talked with Lt. Col. Steve Burke, who was a casualty officer with the Marines and had to tell people [inaudible]. Um, I, I, ah, [Steve] Beck, sorry, um, I think it's interesting because I think it is very difficult to talk about the war dead and the fallen without invoking valor, without invoking the words "heroes." Um, and, ah, ah, why do I feel so comfortable [sic] about the word "hero"? I feel comfortable, ah, uncomfortable, about the word because it seems to me that it is so rhetorically proximate to justifications for more war. Um, and, I don't want to obviously desecrate or disrespect memory of anyone that's fallen, and obviously there are individual circumstances in which there is genuine, tremendous heroism: hail of gunfire, rescuing fellow soldiers and things like that. But it seems to me that we marshal this word in a way that is problematic. But maybe I'm wrong about that.

"uncomfortable" with calling them heroes is the naughty little lead-up story. For the hardcore stuff liberals pleasure themselves to:
Bill Maher - We have been the cowards, lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, that's not cowardly.

In fairness Hayes really didn't say they were not heroes but that calling them such would create a societal desire within its people to perpetuate war in order to become heroes.
First Christopher, when Shakespeare wrote of those who would "hold their manhood cheap" he was speaking of people like you.
Believe it or not I understand the sentiment laid forth by Hayes but it is unfortunate that he does not. In modern culture - no soldier comes back from battle and wants that in the future for his or her children - at least not in the Western world That is why very few of our soldiers ever acknowledge their 'Hero Status'. They are humble in the light of their sacrifice because they know of those left behind, those who came hope draped in a flag and because they know the evils of the world cannot be fathomed by society in general.
That being said, there is a huge chasm between their deference to their sacrifice and heroism and the refusal to recognize the same in general terms during a recognized day of remembrance. The ignorance of people like Christopher here is disheartening but nothing new - these people have long sat in positions of the political and academic bodies of the world.
No disrespect to Sen. Kerry's questionable service (just questions) but Christopher didn't seem to mind him being a war hero:
http://upwithchrishayes.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/12/08/9300972-everything-old-isnt-newt-again?lite
Took a simple search and it was also linked at Ace of Spades HQ :
http://minx.cc/?post=329622
Long into the twilight of his life Christopher will still be trying to puff up those who stayed behind in their beds in comfort while men and women of stronger character rejoice that freedom is still a way a life because of the American Armed Forces. Only by inflating the status of the self-appointed elites can he look in the mirror and not feel the worthlessness of the manhood that laid dormant under the covers while his betters sacrificed. A truly pitiable existence - maybe his blood money makes him feel better.

This was just jaw dropping. My grandfather had my Dad late in life (he died of complications years later from exposure to gas in WWI when my father was 13, while WWII was raging) and he told my father he was not a hero, he just did his job. My Dad knew the end was near and told grandpa he loved him and he was a hero. Grandpa responded "The men who didn't come home were heros because they sacraficed everything, their hopes, dreams and lives so everyone else including the men who came home could live free and to never take what was won with blood for granted." Dad told us Grandpa died a few days later but to him and us Grandpa was a hero and if this bozo can't call those men men like him heros he should be ashamed.

True Memorial Day or Decoration Day is actually May 30th. I will remember my father and family members on Wednesday by placing flags at the gravestones. Not aware of any big events regarding civil war veterans. It has become un pas.( a no-no) But there are a number of local events throughout the state at various times of the year since many important battles occured in La. As you know, the Mississippi River was a busy by way for the North and the South troops during the war. We have many stories and those events are generally celebrated or noted during festival time locally.
But, I am a stickler for the Memorial Day celebration for a very personal reason. See I was born on May 30th and because my father was so proud of the fact that I was born on that day, he gave me a special name. This photo will explain. He is one of the crew members stationed in and around North Africa during WWII.

and I don't know one--NOT A SINGLE ONE--who hates those who serve in the military. It is a dangerous and despicable lie which has been promoted all too often by chickenhawk blowhards on the right who have never worn a uniform in their entire lives.
I'm sure there are, regrettably, factions on the left which are distrustful of--even hostile to--the military in a generic, institutional sense, yet still hold individual members of the various services in high regard. In any event, the detractors may make more noise but their sentiments remain the minority view.

Jer, the left has done nothing to change that perception.
Submitted by drsamherman on Sun, 05/27/2012 - 7:26pm.
From Hanoi Jane forward to the present, Jer, the left has done nothing substantive to change that perception. You can label it a lie, a deception or whatever you would care to do. Problem is, that is what is now deeply ingrained in the cultural psyche of the United States.
Nearly every major antiwar/anti-military effort (organization, protest, loudmouthed Hollyweirdo etc.) has been headlined by self-avowed liberals or leftists. I didn't see Norman Lear proudly putting a Reagan bumpersticker on his car. I didn't see Matt Damon out campaigning for Marco Rubio. And please do let us know when Joan Baez proudly declares she's a Republican.
You know as well as I do that iconic cultural images stay ingrained in the collective psyche for a long time. As long as those images and ideas are kept fresh, and it is the military veterans who will more than happily keep them alive for a long time, popular culture will label leftists and liberals as anti-military. The image of Hanoi Jane at the AA gun battery is as iconic to popular American culture as the image of Betty Grable's white swimsuit picture or Marilyn Monroe's dress ruffling in the steam from the subway tunnel.
Good luck with that effort.

Dr Sam:
A great book named AWOL was written several years ago by a liberal named Schafer who took as a frame of reference his own son who joined the Marines.
The author recounts the manner in which the liberal parents whose children attended the same exclusive private school tried to comfort him for the supposed "failure" of joining the military rather than continuing on their approved path
In fact, some of the more concerned liberal parents thought that some sort of investigation should be performed at the school to determine "What went wrong."
THe book does a great job showing how liberals cannot fathom having their children in the military.

Frankly, the first hippies I knew were young Republicans. But it's unfair and misleading to make generalized and inflexible extrapolations based on the intensely passionate and polarized sentiments which dominated the Vietnam era and apply them to American politics in recent decades.

put out 100 career fields and ask the attendees to rank them in order of merit.
I am certain you will see a disparate spred between the two parties in where they rank the military service. Then ask as part of the normalizing data whether the person considers themselves liberal or conservative and you will see an even greater spread.
I mean, can you imagine asking such a question at the annual meeting of the ACLU? Can you imagine any world in which the ACLU types would not rank scum sucking Personal Injury Atttourney or class action shark as higher than Infantrymen?
As opposed to the intense polarization we are seeing now?
Submitted by drsamherman on Sun, 05/27/2012 - 8:39pm.
Granted our current divisions are not based upon a single issue of one particular conflict, American society is as polarized now as I have ever seen it during my lifetime. Even back then, there were some moral absolutes which still existed. The same cannot be said in this day and age.
The truth is that most of the antiwar and anti-military protesters with leading voices in those times somehow became the antithesis of what they railed against at the time--they became establishment and inhabit our universities as the senior faculty across many disciplines. Their politics never changed, and many of their student sycophants are just as callow and incapable of independent thought as they were back in those days.
Unfortunately, those images from Vietnam somehow bring a new romanticization of that era. In times as troubled and with our citizenry as divided as I can ever remember, we certainly don't need the false anti-Vietnam nostalgia imposed by the geriatric enablers who are trying desperately to regain their relevance.

I wonder why you try to hard to defend your left flank. Obviously I don't know you as a person -only a series of anonymous comments on a conservative blog, so I could be completely off base- but it seems to me you spend an inordinate amount of capital trying to cover for the nutjobs that inhabit the progressive wing of your party.
You seem to me like a JFK-democrat. You embrace the ideals of safety nets, caring for the poor, general equality, and strong unions (I'm generalizing here, not trying to be specific) while not generally accepting the anti-capitalist, anti-war for any reason, radical environmentalism progressive platforms that sadly, are the dominant force behind today's liberal politics. In some ways I feel for you. You're being abandoned. Your a blue-dog democrat and you've been run over by the bus a few times too many. And a vote for your party is essentially a vote for these radical ideals that you don't seem to willingly embrace.
And yet there's some sort of pride keeping you left of center when in reality the center has moved so far left over the last 20 years that your politics actually fall to the right. You refuse not to vote, but you refuse to vote GOP. So you're forced to cast a vote in favor of policies you inherently know are destroying that thing the JFK and others tried so hard to build.
Now, I'm sure you'll deny all of this; either by ignoring it all together or stating publicly how wrong I am. But you're comments belie such a stance. Your party has been infiltrated and co-opted by a brand of progressivism that can only be described as Marxist-influenced. It began in the 60's and advanced in small increments by LBJ, Carter and Clinton; then given a violent shove by Obama.
Let it go Jer. It doesn't represent you any longer. We've got the big tent now. And big open arms. Let it go. Just. Let. It. Go.

worthy of my repeating a 'punny' aphorism I recently encountered: "You are wise beyond your ears." I can't, so I won't, deny all of your conclusions since even though a few may be off target, there are considerably more hits than misses.
I've never knowingly concealed or misrepresented the self-characterization of my political mindset, having mentioned several times over the years that I consider myself a centrist Democrat and therefore slightly left of the geometric midpoint on a linear ideological scale; and also one who is more inclined toward the pragmatic--what is fair? what is reasonable? what works?--rather than being locked in to formulaic positions currently in vogue with the Left.
Here's one example: My staunch pro-civil rights, anti-segregationist advocacy during the '60's placed me firmly in the "liberal" camp--in direct opposition to many of my fellow southerners at the time. Those views easily met my tests for fairness and reasonableness. [Whether or how successfully they would "work" was more problematic.] Yet, for the very same reasons, I was never comfortable with affirmative action and the identity and group rights policies which it engendered. And the 'minority oppression' crusaders [a/k/a race hustlers] whose life blood requires a permanent search for (largely imaginary) racist dragons to slay are not simply indulging in harmless nostalgia for the glory days of freedom marches and triumphal "I have a dream" oratory but instead have created and perpetuated existential impediments to social harmony and racial progress. [I had hoped for and expected many more positive words and deeds by Obama in this area, and his failure has been immensely disappointing. But his detractors have also done their part in aiding and abetting that failure.]
"You seem to me like a JFK-democrat. You embrace the ideals of safety nets, caring for the poor, general equality, and strong unions (I'm generalizing here, not trying to be specific) while not generally accepting the anti-capitalist, anti-war for any reason, radical environmentalism progressive platforms that sadly, are the dominant force behind today's liberal politics..."
Close to a bulls eye. JFK was a centrist Democrat even by contemporaneous-i.e.1950's-60's--standards (even donating money to Richard Nixon's senatorial campaign against Helen Gehegan Douglas whom Kennedy regarded as too far left). And, yet, especially in the South, Kennedy was still reviled as a nigra-loving, communist-appeasing, northeastern liberal.
Your characterization of anti-capitalism, anti-war invariability, environmental radicalism I think borders on caricature in so far as it is deemed the dominant force driving liberal politics. My disagreement seems, and I suppose is, a relatively small one, but it is more than semantical. Change "the dominant" to "a prominent" or "liberal" to "progressive" and I would be more amenable to the wording and the argument. Despite what proponents of thoroughly unfettered and unrestrained markets may insist, a reasonably regulated economy is not per se anti-capitalist. Remember, Sherman Anti-Trust and related legislation was designed to promote competition rather than stifle it.
Bob, it would literally require many hours and several pages of commentary to really tear into this subject, issue by issue, point by point, so let me just close with a few random observations:
--Although I do generally support Democrats, it is not an inviolable rule, my having voted for quite a few Republicans at the state and local level.
--I agree with you about the political trajectories of LBJ and Carter, but not so much regarding Clinton. You can always point to particular policies lending credence to your argument, but, on balance, I think most objective presidential historians would resist putting him in the indisputably lib/progressive category. Even the description of Obama's presidency as a "violent shove" to the left is debatable. As troubling as the debt accumulation may be, stimulus spending to jolt the economy was the application of traditional Keynesian theory rather than the implementation of some insidious Marxist scheme. Universal health care, in one form or another, has been proposed by every Democratic president, and by at least one Republican president, since Harry Truman. Just as most of the criticism of George W. Bush from within his party came from the right which claimed he wasn't conservative enough, most of the criticism of Obama from within the party has come from the left which has claimed he wasn't liberal enough.
--Yes, to an extent, the center of liberal gravity has moved to the left in recent decades. However, by the same token, there has been a corresponding shift in the conservative center of gravity to the right. The political center has been hollowed out as both major ideologies have spun toward the edges. There are a number of reasons for the phenomenon, but I would suggest the proliferation of highly partisan political blogs is not an insignificant factor. I read articles and opinions published at this and other conservative websites and then visit "lefty" blogs, and it is if I am traveling through parallel universes, populated by inhabitants who have less and less in common with one other save absolute confidence in their own self-righteousness. Somewhere along the way the primacy of 'we are all Americans' became relegated to the status of quaint cliche`, if not an outright lie, and replaced by a 'we are, but they aren't' political provincialism. And I find that not only disturbing but dangerous.
I know this hasn't addressed and answered everything you raised in your post, but it will have to do for now. Perhaps more, later.

When I say his "detractors" have "aided and abetted..."
I certainly don't mean all detractors or all types of criticism, but more specifically what I consider the excessive zeal of some critics to view far too much of Obama's behavior through the lens of race. In other words, determined to prove the president's obsession with race and his racial divisiveness, they have become fixated with the issue themselves. That, added to the Jacksons and Sharptons and all the other usual suspects on the left hurling the race card at the slightest provocation, coupled with Obama's occasional ill-advised statements [the Gates matter, e.g.], the climate for a "post-racial presidency" has been and remains significantly clouded. And, for that, the president must shoulder the lion's share of the blame.

You must have read my mind, as the sentence in your lengthy post which caught my eye was:
"But his detractors have also done their part in aiding and abetting that failure."
You are making an equivalence argument with "his detractors", as though the 'detractors' somehow carry an equal amount of blame for merely reacting to Obama's idiocy / faux pas.
By implying that Obama's detractors have managed to magnify and distort - all out of proportion to what was said by Obama - his clearly audible verbal miscues, you are nothing if not consistent with your left leaning defense of a fellow Democrat.
The 'failure' was Obama's.
A more fair rendition would have had you marrying up your last sentence with the 'detractor' line, thusly:
" -- his detractors have done their part in vocalizing and continually advertising Obama's failures; but that is what opponents do. The president must shoulder the lions' share of the blame for those failures."
Also, when placing "Obama" and "lion" in the same sentence, the correct spelling is lyin'.
Other than that, bud, a very good read.

The widespread publication of an extremely dated photo of an angelic-looking 12-year-old Martin which prompted Obama to open his presidential piehole and utter the 'e looks lik a laddie of me oon blood silliness. I dare say after the release of the contemporary and more menacing-looking Martin pics, he regretted that remark.
2. NBC's 911 transcript editing debacle--inexcusable and enormously prejudicial
3. Was there some reason for withholding the more graphic blood-dripping-down-his-head pics of Zimmerman taken just after the incident? The initial photos and tape excerpts made it appear there was virtually no injury to Zimmerman.
4. Let's face it, the early narrative did provoke serious questions--even in the minds of many conservatives: Innocent and unarmed black teen walking home carrying skittles and iced tea gunned down by white neighborhood vigilante, and police say "no problem".
5. There is one area where the MSM has exhibited a definite bias for years: Racial issues. The rare instances of white on black crime are vastly overpublicized. And the far more frequent instances of black on white crime are swept under the rug. It's white guilt and a fear that blacks will be further stereotyped and stigmatized and that it may fan the flames of re-ignited racism. it's the elephant in the room that we pretend not to see and dare not talk about.

I had pretty much a similar argument with Jer, and called him a troll. I got my head bitten off and was reminded, in no uncertain terms, of what an established presence he is here, and that he has cordial relationships with many on Newsbusters. I'm not going to gloat about this little dustup, but I will say: Jer if you say patently ridiculous things like you did above, you're gonna get flack. BD stated that liberals hate him for being in the military and your response was you've never met a lib who hated those in the military. I believe this would be a hasty generalization fallacy
http://nizkor.org/features/fallacies/hasty-generalization.html
The fallacy is the majority of liberals don't hate soldiers because you've never met one who did. Just because you've never met a lib who hated those in the military doesn't mean they don't exist, or aren't the majority. 95% of the time here your posts are lucid and intelligent, and can't be argued with other than on ideological grounds. But 5% of the time you stray just a little too far and you shouldn't be surprised if you receive what djwolf gave you

I have defended Jer, myself, on occasion - against unfair statements made by some who maybe haven't been perusing NBs for any length of time.
That said, the only difference between a lib troll and Jer is that Jer, it seems to me, is more of a lefty than he is a liberal; and he is a house lib, or lefty, as opposed to a drive-by type.
He sides with just about any lib opinion most of the time - though I have seen him post an occasional word of advice - along the lines of "Give it up", to a new lib troll who is getting his head handed to him.
Still and all, Jer has an ingrained, Pavlovian type of knee jerk reaction that he appears to have absolutely no control over (which results in him getting crossways with conservatives around here about ninety eight per cent of the time), to any remarks that a conservative sees as truth but that Jer sees as disparaging to the left or Democrats; or disagrees with.
I am almost certain that Jer leans heavily left. :o)

And I did reread your comments, several times over. My initial post was considerably more harsh, but I edited it because I accused you of calling BD a liar. I realized you didn't. But I stand by what I printed. Your inference was that since you don't know any libs who hate soldiers then they don't exist. I read that you admitted that there are libs who hate the military complex but never said there were libs who hated soldiers. I'm guessing that you're saying they were the ones who made the generalizations. I won't argue that, but you compounded the problem by coming back with another generalization. So it comes out as (to a neutral observer) BD: all libs hate soldiers! Jer: all libs I know don't hate soldiers. Two wrongs don't make a right.
I called your remark ridiculous, and the one I'm referring to is this: "I know quite a few libs and I don't know one--NOT A SINGLE ONE--who hates those who serve in the military. It is a dangerous and despicable lie which has been promoted all too often"
My argument, and it's supported by anecdotal evidence of at least celebrity libs that have already been mentioned, that many libs DO hate soldiers. They hate everything about the military, including those who serve in it. I think it's doing a disservice to military veterans to pretend that there isn't a hatred of them
BTW before I get jumped on by someone: I'm using soldier as a shorthand. I mean everyone in the military. I realize some might take offense by that. I know my Navy father would have. But be kind to a poor, slow typist

My first cousin is a Vietnam vet. My classmate and friend was blown to pieces by a mortal shell in Nam. I spent six years in the Army Reserves--the distinguished graduate of the Artillery Survey School in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
I have been a student of military history for most of my life. I have the utmost respect for our military institutions and revere all of the men and women who are or have ever been members of the respective branches of our armed forces--whenever and wherever they have answered the call to serve.
I don't need you or anyone else flinging the patriot card at me.
Yes, I am well aware that there are some liberals who intensely dislike the military and have little respect for the men and women who serve in it as well. However, I am personally unacquainted with any who fit that description. I repeat: I know quite a few liberals AND NOT A SINGLE ONE HATES THE MILITARY IN GENERAL PLUS ALL OF THOSE WHO SERVE AS SOLDIERS, SAILORS, MARINES, OR AIRMEN.
Are you saying that your liberal relatives despise all of the men in your family who are military? I find that astounding and disturbing. But if you say it's true, then I believe you.

Our Heroes
Submitted by J.A. Harnes on Sun, 05/27/2012 - 7:11pm.
You can walk through some of the crumbling old towns and cities in New Jersey and other Northern states and still find almost forgotten military monuments marked with the letters GAR... Few today even know what those three letters stood for. The men were of all colors and backgrounds but they, and their comrades who died, saved the Union.
It was a fraternal organization, a band of brothers, which was dissolve in 1956 when its last member died. These men were heroes! GAR - The Grand Army of the Republic. The GAR became among the first organized advocacy groups in American politics, supporting voting rights for black veterans, lobbying the US Congress to establish veterans' pensions, and supporting candidates for office.
Its peak membership, at more than 400,000, was in 1890; a high point of Civil War commemorative ceremonies.
To each generation "Our Heroes" have served in the nation's military to ensure that this nation, this Republic, in words of President Lincoln "would not perish from the Earth."
This Memorial Day is a time to remember the men and women who have fought and died, been mutilated in mind and body, to preserve our nation. Yes they are heroes. It will only take one generation to fail and this land will lose the freedoms most of us cherish.
At the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787, Benjamin Franklin was asked as he left Independence Hall on the final day of deliberation: "Well, Doctor, what have we got—a Republic or a Monarchy?”
“A Republic, if you can keep it.” Franklyn replied.
It is our heroes who have kept, and are still keeping, our Republic and Constitution for us in a very dangerous world where far too many live under totalitarian rule. These are the men and woman who deserve our praise and remembrance.
As for Chris Hayes or MSNBC, who cares! Our heroes fought and fight for Freedom of Speech even if overpaid commentators or corporate news services act like fools!

Chris Hayes: "But maybe I'm wrong about that."
Not just wrong, but dead wrong. I spent 21 years in the Marine Corps as an infantry officer with three years in combat.
I don't know what else you would call soldiers, sailors, airmen, coast guardsmen, and Marines who are on call 24/7 365 days a year at the government's beck and call. Who are told by politicians to go to war. Who in combat are never certain if they will see the next sunset or sunrise. Who endure the unendurable. Who are pushed to and beyond physical and mental limits. Who suffer long separations from their families. Who are there for their buddies in despare fights for survival.
Gee Chris, what would you call such people?
The courage and dedication to the country and Constitution of the entire MSM wouldn't fill a thimble.
When I was a platoon commander in Vietnam, about half of my platoon were draftees. But they saddled up every day and did their jobs. Some made it home OK, some were horriblly wounded, and some died.
Then came the all volunteer army. So Yeah we volunteered and so we did our jobs and took the risks in defense of our country so that others, like you Chris, could stay home nice and comfy.
Remember, the military doesn't start wars, the politicians do. But it's the military that has to do the fighting when the politicians fail. The soldiers will fight and die, but the politicans simply return to their 3 Martini lunches as the chattering political class who themselves don't have the courage to fix the serious problems they cause.
But without us as volunteers, with out those of us who see the defense of our country and protection of our Constituion as a higher calling, without those of us willing to give our lives if necessary--who exactly would step forward to protect your sorry **s, Chris?
I've seen Marines do the impossible and receive no credit. I've seen Army helicopter pilots (the Black Cats) brave an unimaginable hail of enemy fire to evacuate our wounded and dead. I've seen Marines die trying to save their buddy. I've seen the Navy crews stand duty 18 hour days. And if it weren't for the close air support from the Air Force, Navy, and Marines; I wouldn't be here today.
What term would you use to describe similar acts of courage within your studio--assuming anyone of you had the courage to put your life on the line?
The reason, Chris, you are so confilcted is because you don't have the faintest idea what you are talking about.
Therefore, MSNBC is the perfect job for you where you can revel in ignorance and remain a piece of rotting flotsam within the MSM.

Good work, BMF.............I know that my Dad - the Col. - would have agreed with you 100%. And he came up from being a 2nd Lt. in the tropical sweltering butcher-beaches of the South Pacific during WW2, so he was no 'cake eater'. And he always treated the enlisted men with respect when he was working - or even when he was in his uniform but off-duty. I remember being with him at the PX or Comminssary, and when the enlisted guys would turn the corner and see him, they'd immediatly start to salute - but he would always wave them off and tell them it was OK. And he knew which officers were 'brown-nosers' and 'kiss-asses' also, and he had no respect or time for that type of activity.
And he also was one of those 'love your country, but beware of your government' types...........he used to listen to Joe Rose ( I think that was his name) - who was a sort of predessecor to Rush Limbaugh, as far as being a conservative and an American Patriot. But he always carried himself with class and good cheer, and he treated everybody the same way - until further notice.
I'm glad that I got to think about him like this.

Yeah, Rush.........I think you're right. My father would be sequestered in his office, sitting at his old oak roll-top desk, puffing on a good cigar, working on his investments - which he did for his entire life, little by little, and listening to Joe Pyne on the radio. I'd go in there once in a while - usually to beg for a couple of dollars, but I remember hearing this guy on the radio, and his point of view was very much like my Dad's. (Of course, if I would have listened to him, instead of being a 'gull-darn surfBUM' - his words - as well as a rock'n'rolling, girl-chasing, devil-may-care free-floater, I'd be retired right now, and taking it easy, instead of still working my ass off!!!) But, as I like to say - I took my 'retirement' early, and now I have to work to pay for it!!! Although my father often considered me to be a lost cause, I think he always respected my independant spirit and my ability to survive out there in the 'real' world, because I left home at 17, and never came back. And when I had one son who was a Navy SEAL, and another son who was in the Coast Guard Acadamy - he seemed to give me a little credit for something, anyway!!!
I know that Rush likes to give himself credit for being 'the big voice', but this guy was around when Rush was just a fat little whippersnapper. And don't get me wrong, I like Rush a lot - but I know a few more things than just what he tells us.

Well, Dave - I read a story this morning about how a lot of North Korean middle-echelon government types have 'accidentally' been killed in auto accidents and other unfortunate scenarios - ostenibly for not being 'up to' the challenge of being a GOOD North Korean who represents the REGIME and the dEAR LEADER in their actions and activities.
And I think these North Koreans are a pretty macho bunch - full of bluster and bravado, however false and feigned it might be - PLUS, let us NOT forget that they ARE a military dictatorship!!! So I think this little faggot might not even make it out of the airport, once he lands there.
I don't think he 'hates' freedom - hell, he's got a LOT of it - I just think he's too clueless to know why he has it!! A lot of libs are that way................and the 'smart' ones know how to use this country's freedom to achieve their goals of limiting ours, once they get into power. I also believe that anybody who willingly put's themselves in harms way for their nation also be classified as a hero.
Just to be clear, none of us (past/present/future) military want anything to do with war, but will respond when the nation asks it of us.

Military Heroes
Submitted by Osamas Pajamas on Sun, 05/27/2012 - 9:52pm.
I have a real clear idea of what constitutes a hero and what doesn't. At the time of the Vietnam war I scrapped with those above me in the chain of command and got tossed in the brig and then kicked out. In retrospect these many years later, I see that it was more my cowardice than it was my philosophy which animated my conflict and exit.
Now I have lost two cousins --- one fell in Afghanistan fighting the Russians before the American invasion of Afghanistan. He was blown to pieces by a Russian RPG while trying to pull an injured comrade behind a stone wall which might have saved them both.
The other lad fell to a sniper, in Iraq. He was involved in an IED explosion and when he rushed from his vehcile forward to where his commander was taking fire, he was shot through the armhole of his flak jacket and into his lung. It took him about six hours to die there, on the ground. We used to babysit him when he was a little kid, and he danced Circassian dance like a djinni, a pro, as a teenager.
Both of these men were braver than I have ever been and braver than I am ever likely to be --- although perhaps one day I may redeem myself, dying for a good cause. We'll see.
When I see some punk Democrat mince words about heroism, I know that I've found a coward worse than myself. That gives me no comfort, nor should that fact comfort anyone else, in the dangerous world that we live in.

The military are heroes. They go to protect America and the civilians of the country they are deployed too. They have to rely on the information given to them by the government (e.g. WMDs in Iraq, Libya is using military aircraft against civilians) and they go to fight the enemy while trying to preserves life to all extent possible. If there is a criticism, it is not in the military heroes who give their lives, it is in the statist decisions by our government. But he would never criticize the government, but he is a leftist, socialist worm.

Memorial Day 2012
Submitted by berlet98 on Mon, 05/28/2012 - 12:45am.
Memorial Day 2012
As with some other American holidays, the significance of Memorial Day has been largely forgotten and seriously diminished.
Today, the Fourth of July is rarely recognized as our celebration of independence from England after a long, bloody revolution. It has become a day to socialize with friends, neighbors, and relatives, scarf down burgers, hotdogs, and potato salad, attend a parade with lots of firetrucks, and watch illegal fireworks.
Christmas, a national holiday in observance of the birth of Jesus Christ, has devolved into a national shopping frenzy culminating in extravagant gift-giving, another eating orgy, and then figuring out how to pay the credit card bills.
Aside from Martin Luther King Day and Thanksgiving, little notice is given by too many people as to why we are able to sleep in and not go to work on holidays.
Memorial Day, formerly Decoration Day, is now the kickoff to forthcoming summer pleasures rather than a somber recognition of the tens of thousands of men and women who have died in service to our country over the past 223 years.
There’s certainly nothing wrong in celebrating but being festive while ignoring the fundamental purpose of the festivities is unseemly, if not un-American.
On Memorial Day 2010, President Barack Hussein Obama chose to show his contempt for America’s war dead . . .

Forget, for a moment, the point that proximity of rhetoric does nothing to justify war, assuming this is his absurd point, Hayes says nothing to explain how honoring heroism in battle, a point he concedes, justifies war. He seems to not understand the difference or even the point he's trying to make.
Adding further insult to the viewers' injury he half stumbles into a rebuttal to his point and makes clear his wanting to avoid disrespect of fallen soldiers, saying nothing of the soldiers still protecting us, an admission too late in proximity to his previous rhetoric to be taken seriously. It reminded me of a movie scene, when the half-witted Ricky Bobby goes begins insulting the owner of his racing team, then justifies it by framing his insults with all due respect.
The only saving of his face would come from his audience who probably didn't understand his point either.

Yes Chris, generals throughout history have started wars simply because they wanted to watch soldiers be regarded as heroes. That was the deciding factor. Because, you know, there is never any real reason to have a war. Like, what if they threw a war and nobody came? I mean, there would never have been a World War Two if it hadn't been for all the hero wannabes. Isn't it amazing how people with normal (i.e. less than your) intelligence don't realize that the only reason there has ever been war is either to make money or to make heroes? War is just so silly. Let's not encourage it by referring to the participants as heroes. Maybe if we cancel things that glorify war, like Memorial Day, there will be no more wars!
Give the Term LOW LIFE a whole new meaning

He and his liberal ilk would be the First to Demand the rights others have Fallen for and yet has the nerve to be uncomfortable with the term Hero. He does not know what it takes to face OUR enemy, with bullets flying, and not run, many of us do.
This PERSON, I can't call him a man because it takes Character to be a man, Is the reason our young have no idea of what America is all about and why their freedom is NOT Free..

We need to go back to the 40's when effeminate aholes like this would be dragged out in the alley and have his a$$ kicked. The beat cop walking by would be told what he said and would grin and keep going. I am at my wits end listening to these people they truly need to be roughed up. They don't understand anything else. They are deathly afraid of the Mooslims you know why? Fear of retaliation.

Hayes is married to Kate A. Shaw, Associate Counsel for President Barack Obama and daughter of award-winning Chicago journalist Andy Shaw, who has also appeared a number of times on MSNBC.[12][13] Hayes and Shaw resided in Washington, D.C., until they moved to New York City, where Up with Chris Hayes is produced.[14] Their daughter, Ryan Elizabeth Shaw-Hayes, was born in November 2011.[15] Hayes's brother Luke is a Democratic political operative.
Hayes has never served the USA.

As a Conservative, I applaud Hayes' comment
Submitted by consultofactus on Mon, 05/28/2012 - 10:37am.
First of all, I find Hayes' comments disgusting. Later today I will visit my grandfather's grave. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. I will say a prayer of thanks for him and all those who served this country honorably. They will always be heroes to me!
Secondly, I will remember that these heroes fought for the right of free speech. I will not diminsh their service and sacrafice by abridging someone else's freedom of speech, regardless of how I feel about what is being said.
Finally, I applaud those on the left who, in uncharacteristic fits of candor, state plainly for all to see and hear the foundational principles of liberalism. Liberalism's only hope of success is to dress it up in the trappings of popular culture - Hollywood and mainstream news have carried its water for decades. However, when the core of liberal ideology is exposed it quickly shrivels and dies like mildew exposed to the sun. So I say in this vitally important election year to liberals everywhere - Speak how you REALLY feel! Let it all out! Stop the fog machine of popular culture so you and your backers come clearly into focus as the power hungry socialists you really are!
Here's what will happen...

Chris Hayes will start to feel the heat over this. He will then say he was "taken out of context".
However, Tina Brown called Joe Biden a "hero" for his remarks about homosexual marriage: As for the bumbling Vice President, "I think frankly [Obama] stumbled into it because of Joe Biden. The hero of the hour is Joe Biden, right? But I think once [Obama] realized that this was a bus that was now moving, that he did grasp it and did the right thing."

How sick are liberals? Voice approval for homosexual marriage? You're a "hero".
Give your life for your country? Not so much.

"But it seems to me that we marshal this word in a way that is problematic. But maybe I'm wrong about that."
huh--ya think?
this is almost more annoying than just coming out and saying "I refuse to call them heroes." Hayes is pretending that he's going through some big moral dilemma. ('rhetorical proximity' my Aunt Fanny.)

These guys always think they're the smartest ones in the room...makes me sick.
He misses the point completely. The mere fact that these brave men and women are willing to put on the uniform, knowing they could end up in harm's way, knowing they may very well lay down their lives for the rest of us, is reason enough for ALL of us to think of them as heroes. And I don't give a rat's ass, Chris Hayes, if you are "uncomfortable"...you pompous boob!
Where did they find this guy? Is this Olberman's nephew??

This Chris, along with the one whose leg tingles, provide the best argument I've heard for Universal Military Training.
A person who has not experienced military service should not have the effrontery to opine about either the life style or the causes for war. They haven't earned the 'right to speak' on those subjects. (That's a polite way of saying they don't know what they're chattering about.)

If Obama had a son, he would look like Hayes.
Folks, I just heard the best news of the day on talk radio. The stock price of New York Times is down to $6.55, and at one time it was around $48. And, and, the unbelievably giddy part about this situation is that the NYT workers are complaining about their retirement packages, it seems like they will be losing hundreds of thousands of dollars because for one part, declining circulation. Seems it's been going down for 13 straight years. So now as Rev Wright likes to say, the Times' chickens have come home to roost. The most-liberal, America-hating, treasonous news media in the U.S. is experiencing the same problems that lots of other companies across the country are. Just like GM who caved into the unions and promised ginormous retirement packages, in some cases allowing people to retire at almost full wages after 30 years, and 18 year-old could retire at 48. Yep, all those union workers who demanded that the company pay for all medical, and give them 12 weeks vacation a year (the steel companies), are now finally finding out that it is not sustainable.
The Times' workers have put out a 6 minute video complaining about their situation, but they still don't see the irony.
Hey New York Times, here's some solace: Bears made a lot of money shorting your stock from $48 to $6.55, perhaps it was some of your own employees who saw the writing on the wall.

MSNBC defines a real hero as being a OWS kid who kraps on cop cars, rapes girls, and stabs cops. Now THAT is a REAL HERO to MSNBC... those guys who go off to fight wars in other countries.. bah... just a bunch of thugs.

Sadly, this "man" has done nothing in his life except "think about stuff" (he has a degree in philosophy from Brown). [No, I won't say a thing about ~gag~ "philosophy degrees" or about ~gag~ "Brown."]
He worked for The Nation and replaced that horrid David Corn. He was mentored by that horrid Rachel Maddow.
His wife is one of Obama's lawyers (I wonder what she is covering up for the Kenyan clown)? According to wiki, his brother is a Dem official! Chris, with his wimpy weak face (looks like a girl) has done absolutely nothing and does not even know that he does not know what he does not know. (And never will, at the rate he's going.)
I really, really, really, wish that zeros like Chris could be forced into at least a year of military training (for their own sakes; it would help them "get it" since they have no clue and never will. At his current rate, he will only grow into a nasty old man who has done nothing and will never know what he does not know. In fact, he believes that he is very, and highly, intelligent. Too bad that he has brought a wife and daughter into the mix before he did anything; it's now too late and we can't break up a family (or make a child suffer) because her "daddy" is a fool. His only "brush with life" was to have a daughter (with a hyphenated name) and he will learn little to nothing from her.
What a shame that he was raised to be a pompous, arrogant, judgmental, zero and to believe that that is enough to get through life! His Leftist parents failed him; but flattered themselves.
